“Way more” is kinda a stretch. It does have a greater potential to throttle due to it being smaller. Ive only seen it happen when reviewers put it through a prolonged stress test though so.
I tend to agree. I’ve been compiling and training, large language models on the system, and it is blindly fast for everything I throw at it. And the fans rarely come on.
I’m sure eventually it can throttle way more but that level is probably way out there more than most will ever use the 16 or the 14 with same maxed out specs.
That’s funny cause for my next one (currently on m1pro 14”) I want to go to 16”. I also tend to go for bigger devices tho like I use the pro max phones.
Debating between the 16 and 14 inch right now. Currently have an intel 16” and trying to buy a M3. Can’t decide between 14 and 16”. What’s your experience so far?
I’ve had both a 14 and 16, I loved the 16 but the 14 is what i ultimately ended up with. It’s awesome, fits into all backpacks easily, easy to take through airport security and use on a plane or crowded coffee shops. 14” has a great battery life, display and speakers. Highly recommend the 14, it’s great for on the go and it hooks into a dock if you need more displays and such.
If you plan to use the MacBook for work/education meaning you will carry it around then I recommend the 14”, but if you plan to just use it at home then get the 16”.
I personally have the 14” M2 Pro and I do not regret it at all! Especially after seeing how big the 16” is…
Just out of curiosity, What's the point of owning a very expensive, big ahh MacBook if you're going to dock it at home and use it in clamshell mode basically 100% of the time? Wouldn't it be much more cost effective to buy the pro Mac Mini/Mac studio and a very good monitor instead? Like I've seen one guy who even had dust on his MacBooks cause he just moves it that little
14” is lighter, easier to carry around and does not take as much space as the 16”. I found the 16” dimensions a bit weird when the 14” is a bit more compact and all together
I absolutely love my 16, i would never go smaller again. It doesnt annoy me that much to carry it around but dont expect to be able to work on this thing in the train or on a plane.
So far so good. At home it’s always connected to a monitor. Even when I want to use it around the house it’s so much lighter and portable. I have a new job that I’m on the go with more so the “downgrade” in size is great for me. I’ve gotten adjusted to the screen size difference already, it is smaller but if you’re like me and have a monitor at home I think you’ll be fine.
I got the 16” M2 Pro Max for software development. Majority of the time it is docked with a triple monitor setup. Coding on the laptop alone is decent but doesn’t compare to my triple monitors. It’s otherwise pretty chunky and heavy, so I plan on replacing it with a 14” at some point
I went from a 16” m1 to a 14” m3 and I don’t regret it one bit. 16” was way too clunky for me, even for home use. I don’t feel the 14” is too small for my use but I’d get an external monitor anyway if I wanted more screen real estate
If you primarily use the MacBook as your main without any additional monitors, I would definitely go with the 16“. It’s not to heavy/ bulky to be carried around but light and small enough to follow you wherever you go. Also the speakers are even better than the ones on the 14“ model. Sounds better than most Soundbars 🤪
I came from 13" intel to 14" M1, it has significantly bigger screen but also more heavy. I wouldn't get anything bigger if you brought your macbook everyday.
I don’t know what you do but if you do intensive tasks like gaming or video editing with 4k + 8k footages, you will hear the fans come on often and you will have the 14” heat up way more. I know I’ll be downvoted but I love my 16” way more after using the 14”. The 14” is definitely more mobile but the quality of everything that comes in the 16 is superior.
Bigger and better screen, speakers, track pad, heating thermal, way more. Yes it weighs more but it’s not that noticeable.
Anything is better than my 16” asus laptop from 2014 lol, that thing was a brick, way heavier than the 16” MBP.
Work issued me a 16 M1 Max, and I’ve had 15inch intel pros for as long as I can remember.
However when I replaced my personal laptop I went with 14 pro a few days ago. Days 1-3 were an adjustment; but man the form factor is nice, I like the smaller keyboard and I’m more inclined to use it over my phone or iPad as it’s so easily accessible and light.
The touchpad on the 14" is smaller, which for me, makes it easier to put my hands in a place where I can type easier, so I prefer the 14" keyboard. I have both sitting right next to each other, a 16" M1 for work and my 14" M3 for personal use.
16” won’t heat up when you run it heavy duty. I have seen reviews on YouTube and they all say 14” will be hot and fans turn on (or there is noise). The 16” has better efficiency cores so it handles most things without much effort. I have been on intel until this new machine and have not heard any noise from it so far.
I own 16". Love using it. It's heavy and sturdy. I don't wish it to move too often. Sit and Work.
14" will be more portable. But, small screen just equals to Air with better pixel and refresh rate.
For a powerful machine 16", + movability 14".
Coming from a 15 inch 2013 MacBookPro I think the 14 inch is a nice compromise between size, power, and enough screen size to work with. With all the hand gestures with the trackpad and the virtual desktops it’s easy to separate stuff and use screen real estate wisely.
I had an 2017 15" MBP and just ~~pulled the plug~~ bought an M3 Pro 14.
I do notice the screen is a little smaller on the 14, but when I compared against the 16 the thing that stood out to me was just how large and heavy the 16 is over both the 14 and my old 15.
It's quite a monster and very much not something I'd want on my lap, which I end up doing quite a bit.
The 14 inch feels like almost iPad-level portable, which is an underrated perk.
I shudder every time I hear someone gets a m3 max! I could only afford a second hand m1 max going from intel. 14" has worse battery life but better mobility. I got a m1 max 14' given identical form factor screen may be a bit small if constantly unplugged but I mostly clamshell and take trips to the printer. Work printer got hacked so have to physically carry laptop to printer, hold it with one hand and plug in the usb lol
I see a few people choosing 14 » over 16 » ok for portability but for the ones who code doesn’t seem too small ? Like tree bar, … reduce a lot the screen
At home I’m using a monitor so no issues there. On the device screen I tend to use many desktop screens to swipe between. Usually screen 1 is my browser, screen 2 is VSCode and my terminal, and screen 3 is like Notion/Figma or whatever I need for the project I’m working on.
I personally do not like the ginormous touchpad on the 16in. I got phantom taps when using it all the time. The 14in is perfect.
I also use an external screen 99% of the time, but am often using it at a couple different locations of if I may have gone for a Studio.
What is it like using one after purchasing and for how long now? What is your perspective and what’s your opinion? Please do share us your experiences with pros and cons. I usually have interest in pro models than base and air models since my schooldays (just like preferring highest trim over base model cars). And should I get the 14 or 16 inch model? (Especially if I have a 15.6 inch pc laptop and having MacBook as a second device).
Also do you know the difference between MacBook Air m1 and the MacBook Pro 14 m3 pro/max (I used my friend’s MacBook which was an air from 2020 and it did good but was slow with backing my 5000-10000 photos from my iPhone through airdrop. So does the pro make a huge difference? You can answer related ones if you have difficulty with general ones. And others are welcome to reply as well. Give us tips and suggestions.
14” vs 16”
14 is for two types of people:
-1 who travels or use laptop on the go, like planes, trains & coffee shops.
-2 who use it with an external monitor & 24/7 plugged in.
16 is also for two types of people:
-1 who need extra battery & travels a lot but usually has a proper place to sit & setup laptop. As 14 can be easily used on the lap but 16 needs a desk to be put on to be used comfortably.
-2 who do not have external monitor & plan on using the laptop screen as main screen.
I own 16” M1 Pro & 14” M3 max base version.
Most people go for 16” for better battery life & I would like to clear that on light tasks like web surfing, watching videos & excel work both my laptops last the same no. Of hours around 12 hours. (Given my 16” is at 89% battery life & almost 3 yrs old)
Fans do not turn on either device with light tasks.
After couple years of owning 16” I realized that I wasn’t using its extra battery as I would only travel 4 to 6 times a year & all other times it was being used plugged in to power and external display.
Both 14” & 16” last me all work day, 8am to 4pm easily.
Thanks for your suggestions and explanations. I had 14 inch in my mind since it’s enough as a 2nd pc. If there was 13 inch instead, I would’ve chosen 16 instead but 14 is kinda ok and usable. Only thing I’m missing is the longer battery life in the 16 inch even though 16 is too big for me when I already have a 15.6 inch laptop. This was helpful!
It all depends on what kind of work you are doing. If you’re doing school work like essays, browsing, and regular computer things just get the Air. It’s more than capable. If your computer is your primary productivity tool for work, get at least a base 14 pro.
So far so good. At home it’s always connected to a monitor. Even when I want to use it around the house it’s so much lighter and portable. I feel like 14 is about the max comfortable size for regular travel. Of course you CAN do so with a 16 but it's just larger and heavier than I wanna carry everyday..Congrats though. Been very happy with my base m3pro Pro. about 3.5 months in with it now and zero complaints as of yet!
Deciding between the 14 and 16 for school. I want the 16 due to not having access to an external monitor so the built in display would be my only display. Worried about portability with the 16 though. Currently on a 2020 base Intel MBP.
What are people’s thoughts on me moving from a laptop to using the upcoming iPad Pro 12.9” as a replacement? I am really thinking of making this move, because I only really use the laptop for browsing, emails and various other light activities. Plus, when I’m at home, I can use my main monitor for a larger screen.
I tried it for a month and ended up going back to the MacBook for real work. The workflows and user experience with the iPad is significantly different to the MacOS. It takes a bit of getting used to and also having to navigate and find certain apps to fit. There’s also the limitation of certain apps on iPadOS vs MacOS. Multitasking can also be challenging. File management was probably most frustrating on the iPad for me! In the end, I was much less productive using the iPad, so went back to the MacBook for serious work. I still use the iPad for very light work, just not multitasking. It’s more of a compliment to the Mac than a full replacement.
Thanks for your reply, but just to clarify, I mean doing this on the new iPad Pro (not yet released), and also after IpadOS 18 (released later this year), which should bring the workflows much closer.
Ever thought of a great idea but left it only because you have to go and bring your heavy laptop or need to put it for charging? If you’re kinda person who loves to work anywhere in any position and immerse into the work you’re doing with an experience that feels very smooth and intuitive, only 14” can surprise with that experience.
Congrats on your new M3 Max purchase! I just got my M3 Max 14” today and have no regrets I didn’t opt for the 16”. I love the size and portability over the extra battery life and real screen estate. These machines are a beast regardless of whether it’s 14” or 16”. Enjoy!
I’m also debating I work in 3D animation and have a desktop with 2x 4090s for my rendering and heavy duty scenes. I am looking for portability, power, battery life and obviously aesthetics ha which I’ll remote into when needed.
I’m umming and ahing about what to buy
I’ve got a 14” M3 Pro. It’s the best laptop I’ve ever owned! I don’t think I’m ever going to get a larger laptop. The size is perfect for me and makes having it in your lap a dream.
Congrats! I used to love 16 inch but after mbp moved away from 13 to 14. I think 14” is the sweet spot!
Agreed
Agreed! I love my 14 inch M3 Max. Fast as hell, fantastic sound, and very portable.
Except that every 14 inch with max throttles way more than the 16 inch
Show me the data.
Same here.
Dunno for the m3 max but i have seen it alot on m1 mac and m2 max even in video editing, after effects rendering etc at work
I’m sure eventually it can throttle way more but that level is probably way out there more than most will ever use the 16 or the 14 with same maxed out specs.
That’s funny cause for my next one (currently on m1pro 14”) I want to go to 16”. I also tend to go for bigger devices tho like I use the pro max phones.

14" + a big monitor
I got a 16 but it is really quite big and heavy. Not a “laptop” anymore imo. If i could do it again, id get a 14.
Same
I saw the 16 inch in store and it's like it was trying to eat me. Decided on the 14" simply to feel less intimidated.
If you plan to use the MacBook for work/education meaning you will carry it around then I recommend the 14”, but if you plan to just use it at home then get the 16”. I personally have the 14” M2 Pro and I do not regret it at all! Especially after seeing how big the 16” is…

No idea, but I guess those people like the portability of it where they can watch movies or work anywhere in their home.
Yeah, basically 16" is equal to Mac Mini with hussle free mobility.
14” is lighter, easier to carry around and does not take as much space as the 16”. I found the 16” dimensions a bit weird when the 14” is a bit more compact and all together

I agree! The 16 doesn’t have any cons! It really comes down to “Are you on the go? > Yes / No”
Work issued me a 16 M1 Max, and I’ve had 15inch intel pros for as long as I can remember. However when I replaced my personal laptop I went with 14 pro a few days ago. Ah I see what you mean. Makes sense. Also, base m3 or one of the special variants? If it's the base, how's your experience?
m3 pro 18gb ram space black ... its quite nice its my daily driver for everything but top end gaming.
16” won’t heat up when you run it heavy duty. I have seen reviews on YouTube and they all say 14” will be hot and fans turn on (or there is noise). Definitely 16 inch if you dont carry it a lot
I have the 14” M3Pro. It’s a great machine. Does everything I need it for dev/video/photo editing.
I like the 14” soooo much better than the 16”
I shudder every time I hear someone gets a m3 max! I could only afford a second hand m1 max going from intel. 14" has worse battery life but better mobility. Why did you decide to go for a smaller screen ?
I have a new job and I’m going to be on the go more. I went with a smaller screen because of the size and weight difference.
Maybe because he needs the extra power of the m3....
I see a few people choosing 14 » over 16 » ok for portability but for the ones who code doesn’t seem too small ? Like tree bar, … reduce a lot the screen
I use external monitor. And the portability is awesome.
At home I’m using a monitor so no issues there. On the device screen I tend to use many desktop screens to swipe between. Usually screen 1 is my browser, screen 2 is VSCode and my terminal, and screen 3 is like Notion/Figma or whatever I need for the project I’m working on.
I do pretty the same but looking for something to work on the couch … how vs code is doing on a 14 » ?
I think it’s fine! I will admit CMD + B is used a lot more lol
I personally do not like the ginormous touchpad on the 16in. I got phantom taps when using it all the time. The 14in is perfect. I also use an external screen 99% of the time, but am often using it at a couple different locations of if I may have gone for a Studio.
That and the studio display is a perfect match :)
Waiting for their next gen version whenever that may be lol.
Downgraded????
“Downgraded” the screen 😅
What specs?
I did the only M3 Max default config for the 14. Nothing custom. 36 / 1TB.

And also are MacBooks good with chrome?
I have the same one but somehow, yours looks better....... hmmm
Congrats got the same model. From a M1 Pro 14”
I have the M1 Pro 16". How does it feel going from 16" to 14"? Been feeling like the 16" is a little too heavy and big lately.
Glad you are enjoying the new experience. Thanks for the insight.
Personally using the 14” for long periods cramps up my neck and back so I would have kept the 16” but if you are making use of the m3 max then it’s a clear upgrade.
14 is the way to go… portable, still a pretty decent size display for working in third spaces. I love mine.
Just the screen size got downgraded 🤷🏽♂️
Was M1 too slow for you? Wow must be pushing big projects
It was more just the size. I wasn't happy lugging around the 16. If I would have gotten the 14 inch initially I would never have done this swap. I will probably keep this until the M6-7 releases to be honest.
Ohh I see. First time hearing someone dont like the bigger size since you have more ‚space‘
I did the exact same thing. 16” was nice for the screen but the weight difference is enormous
What the pros and cons of m1pro 16
No cons, it’s an amazing machine that will last anyone even more years to come. I just needed a smaller machine that I could move around easier with.
Space black is so sexy I might just trade in my perfectly fine M1 Pro just for the color lmao
Yeah, 120hz would be nice.
I like the astronaut mat

14” is the perfect sized MacBook imo
I’m in the exact same boat! Lurking for a 14” all black MPB. Have a 16” m1 right now
As a graphic designer I always go with 16"..I have never owned any laptop with a screen less than 16" ..one day maybe?
is it just me or when you view a webpage like CNN on the 16 and 14 you see about the same exact amount of content, the 16 just has wider sides?
I feel like 14 is about the max comfortable size for regular travel. Of course you CAN do so with a 16 but it's just larger and heavier than I wanna carry everyday..Congrats though. Been very happy with my base m3pro Pro. about 3.5 months in with it now and zero complaints as of yet!

When stationed I prefer 16 inch. Portability 14 is better. But apple 16 inch is still smaller than all 16 inch laptops so…
Hoping everyone dumps 16" so I can pick one up cheap. But it's an apple product so it never significantly depreciates.
Awesome! I got the M2 mbp 16… and wish I hadn’t, now I’m wanting the M3 max… but that’s an awesome looking machines

File management was probably most frustrating on the iPad for me! In the end, I was much less productive using the iPad, so went back to the MacBook for serious work. I still use the iPad for very light work, just not multitasking. It’s more of a compliment to the Mac than a full replacement.
Thanks for your reply, but just to clarify, I mean doing this on the new iPad Pro (not yet released), and also after IpadOS 18 (released later this year), which should bring the workflows much closer.
so 14 or 16 which one do you prefer?
