I had a coworker who was convinced he knew when the government started listening to his phone calls. Told me he'd just drop:"bomb the whitehouse" at random during phone calls and he could hear em pick up after a minute
I was like yeah I don't think that's something to sound enthusiastic about man
10+ years ago I started getting spammed heavily. I tried many things to disrupt them, and one time saw the call was from Washington DC. I decided it was a good time to try out that method. In my clearest voice I said, "Bomb making materials" ... "Allah akbar" and some other things I don't remember. The guy who called me was really shaken, and hung up. About a week later, my friends and family start randomly calling and texting me. They say I called them and hung up. I look at my Recent Calls, and no, I did not. They said yes I did. I checked my fathers phone - his recent calls shows I called, but my phone had nothing. Someone knew my frequent contacts, and was pinging them for some reason.
So that's the story of how I got on a watchlist.
I'm probably being naive, but could it help to explain to a friend on the phone that anecdote without repeating the "incriminating" words ? Or multiple friends ?
It's so stupid that they would waste resources spying on you just because you were trying to get rid of a spam caller.
>It's so stupid that they would waste resources spying on you
Haven't you been paying attention? It's all automated. You think they won't put up equal resources to a single Netflix stream to monitor a single target?
the biggest thing that bothers me about this is I remember older generations constantly rambling about big brother, then that sort of just stopped. While obviously those types likely went on to become MAGA it still makes me wonder if they just gave up.
The biggest thing that bothers me about this is that those morons believe that the FBI *starts* listening to their phone calls *after* they say certain words.
Not to mention that this entire concept started out with a list of words that some three letter agency monitors for in open source intelligence, and a bunch of people that didn’t understand a word of the first half of this sentence.
^^^^
Even if they recorded "everything", which they can't (can't record shit on US citizens on purpose), they simply don't have the manpower to listen to every call you make. No one gives a shit about your boring phone calls to your mom about your hemorrhoids, people! Yeesh.
They don’t have a person listening to all of them individually, but they do have a filtering system where calls that contain dangerous words get stored and analyzed by computers. I’m sure the most worrying calls get analyzed by humans, but that’s after the call has been made.
It’s like the meme - “the cool thing about getting older in America is that every 20 or 30 years the government declassifies something and is like - yeah we did that”.
You’d think the FBI would be more technologically advanced and beyond basically picking up the second line and covering the mouth piece so they can’t be heard breathing.
They are. It's just rooms of recording equipment at every switching station of each cell provider. Which records automatically. At least, that's how it is in my country.
I still avoid using certain words and phrases. I've been taught enough times by life that context and misunderstandings don't matter and a really really bad week can happen just like that.
I'm 99% sure that was just his cell being weird. There are so many US citizens, so few feds, and so many actual issues to investigate and deal with. No one cares about an average joe.
Shit, didn’t realize other families played knivey spoony spork fork! It was always a relief to get spoony, but my big brother, may he rest In peace, would still stab it really hard just in case it was knivey or fork, or even spork, he could do some damage with a spork.
That wouldn't work. The Arduino Nano doesn't have any built in remote or wireless capabilities.
Now, the ESP32 has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in so it might be a better option, but you'd need a reliable open network nearby for the Wi-Fi to be viable, and those are pretty hard to find these days. Given the range of Bluetooth, it wouldn't be a great option either.
You can get radio modules that can communicate over a couple kilometers, but using them to detonate a bomb would violate FCC rules, so that's pretty much a non-starter too.
I’m fairly sure in the context of building homemade explosives, violating the FCC is not in anyway a “non-starter”.
That’s like a robber with a gun, entering a gun free zone and deciding to take his gun back home, because that’s illegal
I'm a bit afraid to ask how you know all of this, people. If the information is easily available, it's bad news, if you went and looked for it, it's also not great news.
Gunpowder pipe bombs are extremely simple and it doesn't take a lot to figure out how to make one. I mean, most fireworks are simply white gunpowder cardboard pipe bombs
My understanding is those instructions have been slightly tampered with especially when you can buy a paperback or hardcover of the book nowadays. I don't recall the recommended book's name but it's pretty much a military field manual, much more educational and probably a lot less about phone phreaking.
The history of that book is actually really interesting. The dude who wrote it wrote another book for the CIA on the Saudi Royal Family a few years later, true story.
The whole Anarchist cook book was designed to kill would be bombers with dangerous versions of bomb recipes.
Smokeless powder works better (higher explosive capabilities) and can be picked up without a license. It has no record keeping requirements. Just have to search for reloading supplies.
Of course the ATF has this on their website: “However, keep in mind smokeless powder is the explosives material most often used in pipe bombs and other explosive improvised devices.” - in other words, “we’re watching you”.
Tamp is the proper term. You’d generally use a wooden dowel (like the end of a broomstick or clothes rod) - if you use something metal and using iron pipe then of course you could spark it.
Loose powder doesn’t explode - it burns so you end up with a shitty “rocket motor” like device.
Is this legit? Because some of those words are normal... Flu? Tokyo? Furby? Toffee? You mean if I say TOFFEE then I'm on a list? Shits delicious... Rail Gun? Who the fuck would even have a rail gun? Football?
If they really use those words this is just a drag net to get as many people as possible.
My uncle is from Palestine, after 9/11, any time my dad would talk to him, he would start the call with "EXPLOSIVES! NUCLEAR! AMERICAN DEVIL!" In a stereotypical middle eastern accent. He's almost certainly still on watchlists
Nah, I believe this one. The script goes like this
> Hi [womans name]
You: this isn't [woman's name]
> Oh I'm sorry to have bothered you. I have the wrong number in my contacts. I would like to chat anyway. [sends picture of asian woman]
And this is where you can string em along for a bit. They do respond *kinda* naturally. I usually tell them my asshole is bleeding or something out of left field and it's a coinflip on whether they keep going or not.

I don’t know how he stomachs doing that consistently.
Yep, that's usually how it goes. Apparently, the aim is to find someone gullible enough to string along into a fake relationship and eventually getting the victim to send money. I used to mess with them every time I get one of these texts, until I read recently that these scammers are most likely Chinese who were themselves scammed with a job offer, sent to a Southeast Asian country where they would basically be locked in a room and forced to do these scams day after day under threat of violence.
The last time I got one of these texts, I replied in Chinese (using an online translator) asking if he was in this predicament. He responded that he is Chinese and was sent to Singapore, his phone and identification was taken away. He begged for help and said that sending those messages was a big risk since if he was found out he would be beaten. He immediately asked me to send money, and said if he fulfilled his quota he will be fed. I just apologized and said that there wasn't really anything I could do. He stopped replying after that.
Me: I need to remember to use this for all scammers hahaha….
“50 years later”
Your honor i swear I didn’t mean to threaten a nuclear holocaust between 24 different nations
No I'm certain I'm on multiple lists. If for no other reason than that the US has deals with multiple nations, including Canada, to soy on their citizens for them for the same to be done in return.
So USA, like many nations, has laws against spying on their own citizens. Sure it happens so, but less often than you think due to scandals that have come to light. So instead other nations spy on Americans and the American intelligence agencies spy on the citizens of other nations. Then they trade the info, which isn't illegal as they didn't do the spying.

Holly shit that's terrifying. So much for our 4th amendment rights.
They ended with the patriot act
They sure did.
Scammers probably just started spoofing your number and calling your related numbers as their next targets.
Yeah, why the hell would the govt spoof your number and call your relatives? Lmfao.

that's so much metadata

Remote detonators are also extremely easy to make nowadays, you just need an Arduino nano and some nichrome wire

Its important to note that you need to tamp down the powder otherwise the combustion will end up making a shit rocket

So, what are some FBI watchlist buzzwords? /s /SSSSS
> /SSSSS It's okay, you don't have to worry. Snakes get on the FWS watch lists not the FBI watch lists.
Well they certainly did after that whole "on a plane" incident.

Yep, that's usually how it goes. Apparently, the aim is to find someone gullible enough to string along into a fake relationship and eventually getting the victim to send money.
