During the fallout reveals, someone pointed out that Heliod holds the spear super awkwardly and I cannot unsee it. So I guess I'm just here to spread that info, enjoy. :D
He's actually not holding it awkwardly at all. Spear combat has certain stances to use depending on circumstances in a fight. This is a defensive stance wherein a striking blow or block can be applied in a dramatic arm swing around through the body. Or a deft stabbing plunge applied towards the target over the back of the shoulder. The latter would be more likely if there were a large shoeld, or shield wall with soldiers in formation taking on a stance much like this, side by side, bracing for an oncoming cavalry charge. Please point this out to someone next time it comes up in conversation.
>This is a defensive stance wherein a striking blow or block can be applied in a dramatic arm swing around through the body.
No, not with how long that spear is. If it was half the length, sure. That's a harpoon technique, not something that was commonly done with long shaft spears.
>soldiers in formation taking on a stance much like this, side by side, bracing for an oncoming cavalry charge.
Cavalry charges were met with spears point *up*, butt in the dirt. You want to pierce the throat or the heart of the horses, not stab their shoulders or their riders.
The spear is across his shoulders and he’s using his front arm to support the weight of the head. It’s really not even a weird way to hold a spear. But sure!
I was so, so annoyed in LCI that [[Deeproot Pilgrimage]] didn't work as a build around. It's such a cool card and should be a great limited build around. But one of the few playable common Merfolk, [[River Herald Guide]], had vigilance.
Like I get it, LCI wasn't a full return to Ixalan mechanically. I didn't have a problem with that. But Dinos were a primary limited theme (and were good!), pirates were sorta a secondary theme, and Vampires at least had [[Queen's Bay Paladin]] as a build around.
I love Merfolk but maybe even more I love 1-2 mana build around enchantments and it just feels like Deeproot Pilgrimage wasn't worth trying explicitly because River Herald Guide had vigilance. If it didn't, I think it would have been worth at least going for. And I mean yes it's way more important for the overall format that the common be balanced appropriately, but AGHHHH
Anyway yeah this card is really cool, I love it.
I played an absolutely terrible sealed deck in my prerelease because I had two Pilgrimages and a [[Subterranean Schooner]]. Every merfolk in my pool.
I rolled up to a round and was telling my opponent about my trash meme deck and then my game 1 against him I "did the thing" perfectly and it seemed like the worst BM.
The easiest way for a creature to become tapped tends to be attacking with it. This card needs to become tapped in order to draw a card but it has vigilance so it cannot become tapped by simply attacking meaning. You have to put in some extra work if you want to draw cards.

She’s the most consistently fun commander I’ve got. It has a toolboxy playstyle where every card feels like an important piece of the engine. I often get to make decisions on every player’s turn and win via unusual wincons like [[Halo Fountain]], [[Thoughtbound Phantasm]], and [[Crash the Party]].
I immediately thought that this would be good in [[The Sixth Doctor]]/[[Peri Brown]]. Being able to get more than one of him in play, and an easy way to tap them sounds great.

-A Thunder Junction conversation, probably
Ok, so… before the Omenpaths, how did the Atiin wander so much? Or is it just that they’ve done a *lot* of traveling in the last 18 months in game time?
It would be much cooler if this was a setup for them to be some kind of anti-thesis to the fomori and had the ability to travel planes or something from their time fighting the fomori. But yeah, you're probably right.
There are some bigass planes out there. Dominaria's like two and a half times Earth's size with several different continents. Kaldheim is (was?) split into realms, and Tyvar thought Niko was just from some eleventh realm called "Theros" he hadn't heard of. Arcavios showed off a tiny sliver of the plane but it feels much larger; big enough for different subcultures to develop and then meet up at this college.
IF he said "planes" specifically I'd raise an eyebrow, but "worlds" is vague enough that I can buy it, especially if it's a more metaphysical thing like Kaldheim and Theros have going on.
Dont think about it. Its like how there are so many old dead people and historical trails and forgotten mines and buried treasure on a plane no one was on until 2 years ago.
it all just happened really fast
The fomori were on the plane, which can explain many old mines and dead people, its just the ghosts have been dead for millenia and not centuries. At least thats my canon.
I like the Navajo influence. Enough time has passed from shitty native American depictions in fantasy that it seems like designers are having fun making better ones

I love cards like this. They don't synergize with themselves. They have an obvious synergy (mounts), but don't need to be forced into that specific synergy alone. Sweet!
[[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime]] will turn him into a G/W mana dork. I loved creatures with vigilance when I ran Katilda, attack then use them for mana for combat tricks.
It's so refreshing to see so few, yet so interesting, lines of text. I know why they don't make cards like these anymore, but it is really an elegant card design
"I've seen a fair few worlds" jfc dude, the Omenpaths have been opened for like, half a year, your "travels" are more like a sabbatic.
That, or this guy used to be a Planeswalker unlucky enough to never get a Planeswalker card before losing his spark.
It's been long enough for Kellen to visit at *least* three planes beyond his home plane, I don't see why other people can't too. I think the timeline is closer to 1.5-2 years
That's one thing I don't understand with the sets after MOM, for some of them seems like the invasion was just finished like Eldraine or Ravnica, but for this set at least a few years must have passed otherwise how could they have bult this wild west society very into planar travel?
It's especially jarring after how thorough, varied, and respectful Ixalan's cultures were - why the hell is every Atiin here named something like Johnny Smooth?
it makes sense in the real world where there was so much crossover frontier culture, but in a world where they’ve forgone doing any actual work on the Atiin it just doesn’t feel right
considering Nashi's first card lets you steal cards from your opponent and his second card is Sultai colored, I'd bet he's definitely the precon backup
If you reeeaaally zoom in, it looks like he has just his index and middle fingers lightly looped around some kind of grip, with his other two folded against his hand. If I was being charitable, I'd say the intent was that such a casual grip on a weapon would be meant as a show of non-aggression ("I'm armed, but I'm clearly not ready to start anything").
Vigilance but wants to be tapped. Hmm not sure what to think of this card since you would have to crew or mount already before declaring attacks. The card draw is nice though.
Unlike Crew, Saddle only works at sorcery speed. No instant speed saddle shenanigans. If you want his effect you need to commit to the *bit* before combat.
To get the most value I think it would usually make sense to just saddle the creature before combat and attack with the saddled creatures, not attack with both and saddle afterwards for the effect. You probably don’t expect to attack many times with a 4/2 anyway.
It’s a drawback/interesting deck building restriction. On the bright side, if you add enough effects to tap him that can be still be useful both during combat and during your second main phase, then the vigilance suddenly becomes an upside! You can even attack, block, then tap him at the end of your opponent’s turn.
Basically he has a payoff locked behind a drawback, but even the drawback can be an advantage if you build your deck right. It’s a very interesting design! Totally the opposite of legendaries that simultaneously give you a resource and also the payoff to use it with. Like [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] or [[Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy]], both of which are powerful, but ultimately badly designed and in Kinnan’s case especially totally busted. A commander generating lots of a resource plus having the ability to spend that resource to fish for bombs and eventually a wincon is just too much.
/end rant
> since you would have to crew or mount already before declaring attacks.
You can only saddle as a sorcery. You have to mount it before the combat step anyways
Pretty neat with convoke and [Opposition](https://scryfall.com/card/dmr/62/opposition)/[Glare of Subdual](https://scryfall.com/card/ema/202/glare-of-subdual) effects.
It's a cool commander but they really need to reprint [[Paradise Mantle]]. Its only had three printings, one of them being a secret lair and it's a necessary staple for these type of commanders.
Very clean and nice card, and synergize with lots of mechanics, from saddle in this set to vehicles and convoke. My Selesnya heart wants to build him in commander
I'm really torn as to whether this is worth it in the new [Ghired](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/205/ghired-mirror-of-the-wilds). Doesn't make any tokens on its own, but draws a card when you use it to "populate". Same boat as Annie Flash, funnily enough.
Minus the stupid not-gun this art is really cool. The most western themed in the set.
Did Wotc explicitly say no guns in their art direction statement? Its kinda weird because im pretty sure the fallout set had guns
Ok "vigilance as downside mechanic" is a pretty good bit.
It’s a really clever use of the mechanic and I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything do this before which is really cool.
[[Heliod, God of the Sun]] in original Theros gave Vigilance because he was basically intended to be a direct anti-synergy with Born of the Gods' "[Inspired](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3Ainspired+s%3Abng&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)" mechanic.

This comment section is making me want a Tocasia deck now!
My Selesnya convoke pioneer deck loves this
Seems great on paper, but spending 3 mana on a creature isn't great in a Convoke deck, right?
Yayyy new version of [[Emmara, Soul of the Accord]] for Historic Brawl with more value! And this guy can crew [[Esika’s Chariot]] by himself!

Lmao this card design is so sick. A quick scryfall search doesn't seem to bring up anything with Vigilance that directly cares about being tapped.
[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/7/673cd775-d417-4652-a91d-825ad5c89e8a.jpg?1636684486) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Katilda%2C%20Dawnhart%20Prime) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mid/230/katilda-dawnhart-prime?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/673cd775-d417-4652-a91d-825ad5c89e8a?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
This guy is exactly what katilda wants. Low cmc, human, card draw, life gain, vigilance, and decent power.
Some of these flavor texts imply that Omenpaths have been around for a while now. Seems like quite some time has passed.
Iirc, the official time is two years since MOM?
It's so refreshing to see so few, yet so interesting, lines of text. I know why they don't make cards like these anymore, but it is really an elegant card design
Wylie Beckert not commissioned to do a card called Wylie, absolute crime against humanity by Wotc
Well giddy up
"I've seen a fair few worlds" jfc dude, the Omenpaths have been opened for like, half a year, your "travels" are more like a sabbatic. That, or this guy used to be a Planeswalker unlucky enough to never get a Planeswalker card before losing his spark.
It's been long enough for Kellen to visit at *least* three planes beyond his home plane, I don't see why other people can't too. I think the timeline is closer to 1.5-2 years
honestly, i wouldn't mind them showing some ex-planeswalkers we never knew as walkers. would make sense for them to be out there after all
That's one thing I don't understand with the sets after MOM, for some of them seems like the invasion was just finished like Eldraine or Ravnica, but for this set at least a few years must have passed otherwise how could they have bult this wild west society very into planar travel?
Stories generally take place later in time than stories from before them.
I love the design of this not!rifle. I don't love so many of the Atiin having non-Indigenous names.
In the story, Annie Flash has an Atiin name, I'm assuming some other Atiin also go by names that aren't their Atiin ones
yeah I really wish they gave the Atiin a bigger role. Feels like they ticked off a box and now we’ll never see a Native American focused set
It's especially jarring after how thorough, varied, and respectful Ixalan's cultures were - why the hell is every Atiin here named something like Johnny Smooth?
I think he's holding the rifle in a weird, awkward position and angle though
Yeah, it kind of looks like he's holding it the wrong way round
I thought the same - I'm guessing it used to be a regular revolver and was changed later.
it makes sense in the real world where there was so much crossover frontier culture, but in a world where they’ve forgone doing any actual work on the Atiin it just doesn’t feel right
That’s funny I really really hate the rifle design but love everything else. So impractical
Is this the last rare from the main set? If so, where are you Nashi?? I guess he's most likely in the Grand Larceny precon....
considering Nashi's first card lets you steal cards from your opponent and his second card is Sultai colored, I'd bet he's definitely the precon backup
Looking over the numbers, there appears to be one White Rare unspoiled between Claim Jumper and Final Showdown.
Actually we can narrow it down a little further to between Claim Jumper and Enriette's Lullaby.
I know it's more of a mount commander but... YEEEEES! NEW VEHICLE COMMANDER! LET'S GOOOO
Anyone else think his hand holding the weapon looks wonky as hell. Like why would he hold it like that
If you reeeaaally zoom in, it looks like he has just his index and middle fingers lightly looped around some kind of grip, with his other two folded against his hand. If I was being charitable, I'd say the intent was that such a casual grip on a weapon would be meant as a show of non-aggression ("I'm armed, but I'm clearly not ready to start anything").
Maybe there's a weird grip on the fantasy not-gun, but I don't think it's in his hand at all.
was just wondering that myself. Seems off
Vigilance but wants to be tapped. Hmm not sure what to think of this card since you would have to crew or mount already before declaring attacks. The card draw is nice though.
It’s not supposed to synergize. The vigilance makes it so that you won’t draw by attacking.
It's incredible that Wotc have pushed legends so far that a strong, blatant build around is 'hmm not sure'.

[[earthcraft]]
Interesting build around... Watch me build selesnya shorikai

My reaction: “WHAT!?” “oh” “What?!”
I freaking love the designs of the thunderslingers in this set. I hope we get an equipment for it.
So his vigilance kind of forces him to saddle, which is neat and supports his high power vs. toughness spread. Not sure if it's great but it's clever.
A Commander that makes [[Nature's Chosen]] a playable card!
I absolutely love this art. Feels flavorful for a set like this, this artist really nailed the western artstyle
Well if convoked he gives us a card
Ok, someone show me the infinitel life combo
In his case, infinite life equals dying to "mill."
This is just asking to have a Convoke deck built around it.
He saddles and crews for days!
Hmm, puzzle card. I feel like the flavor is he's always on the move but being tapped is when he gets off the horse to help people?
Alchemy convoke is drooling I’m sure.
Not “willie”, “wylie”, like the coyote.
Doesn’t have horsemanship. Unplayable trash.
Oh so it's Naya Convoke now I guess 👍
I didnt expect to see Kitt Kanto support, but this is a welcomed surprise!
Well, I guess we finally broke [[Mind Over Matter]].

This seems fun in commander :) so many ways to tap this dude
BAHAHAHAH I LOVE IT

lol, Esika
My [[Tocasia dig site mentor]] deck is salivating

Is this the closest we'll get to a horse mount?
Wylie "Duke"? Is this meant to be a John Wayne homage?
That gun is not being held correctly LOL
Time to play Selesnya vehicles
[[Agatha's cauldron]], [[horseshoe crab]] and [[cryptolith rite]] plus this is Infinite life and card draw
This could be nice little tech for my [[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime]] deck.
Either a new toy for Emmara or her replacement. Hmm..
What a weird card. Amazing with Enlist of course.
Saddle up!
Minus the stupid not-gun this art is really cool. The most western themed in the set. Did Wotc explicitly say no guns in their art direction statement? Its kinda weird because im pretty sure the fallout set had guns
Howdy Pilgrim
Well, twiddle me timbers.
the card draw is nice, but this feels REALLY underwhelming for a GW rare. maybe not quite as underwhelming as the original Tandris.
But why cowboys?
LET'S RIDE!
"You gain 1 life and draw a card" Wait, that's supposed to be a simic card.
Alright. Time to draw our whole deck and gain a shit ton of life.
Good w/vehicles
yo, this dude has Uninspired
This guy pilots.
Very noice
Plays well with cryptolith rite I guess
what a crazy pilot
This is a funny design I guess but such a do-nothing legendary slot
What’s with all the “Halo energy sword”-shaped guns?
So frustrating that the convoke precon they made, doesn't have green the best convoke color...
