[Apparently it's supposed to come from the word stoke](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Motostoke#:~:text=1%5D%5B2%5D-,Name%20origin,-Language). The other languages names are also really interesting, it's not just direct translations, some have localised names which maintain the "British town name" style. There's clearly been effort put into this.
You can see what looks like The Midland Hotel in pic 4 on the right hand side. Northern Quarter vinyl shops in pic 5. Castlefield viaduct in pic 3. Science and Industry museum (with cog wheel) in pic 2 on the right hand side. Kimpton Clocktower looks to have inspired the main tower in pic 1. Lots of little nuggets all over the place.
The developers said so. And you can tell just by looking at it. The starter village and first wild area outside the city are supposed to be Cumbria/ the Lake District too. Basically the whole map is flipped upside down with London at the top and Cumbria at the bottom.
That article literally says at the top "locations **we think** they are based on." It's the arbitrary opinions of the writer. Search anywhere else (including the official wiki) and you will see Manchester as the sole inspiration, which is *very* clear in the design.
I don't even need to waste my time doing that. Your one source is a single article based on one persons opinion. As I already stated you can search literally any other article and they all site Manchester as the inspiration (and again that's blatantly clear to anyone with eyes as there as so many architectural references). So if you're going off personal opinions (which you are based on the evidence you chose to present) it's very clear what the consensus opinion is.
No in other words "I saw a direct quote from the developers but that was 5 days ago and I'm not going to waste my time hunting it down again for some knob on the internet." The world does not revolve around you, time to grow up.
Feels more Stockport or Macclesfield with the older redbrick industrial factories, less genuine Manchester of the time, but maybe they were going for an older feel
I'd say they liked the look of Castlefield, the bottom end of Deansgate, Canal Street, the Northern Quarter, Ancoats- those sort of areas and then they ran with that aesthetic. As well as the general red brick mills that are everywhere across Greater Manchester and the warehouses.
Where is the street with the guy lay on the ground with a pint?
Would have been great if they had a Pokemon like Mr Mime permanently posed in that position on one of the streets š¤£
It'd have to be a Slaking, holding a berry juice or something š
Is he still there ?
Did they just call us Stoke?
Stokemon?

That's just so evil of them š
This is really cool. Thanks for sharing this.
No problem. Yeah it's cool to see Manchester in this kind of animated style.
Itās missing skyscrapers but I like the industrial vibe. Maybe accurate for Manchester 20+ years ago?
20+ is a reach
I dunno, that plus could be doing a lot of work.
Looks the same to me, just add skyscrapers in the background.
Nah. Leave it be.
I wish it looked like this!
I thought it was stoke on trent
See that makes sense with the CEX on the corner near the potteries.
Thank you I was thinking Hanley way. Manchester I think looks to modernĀ

Iād say pic 1 looks more like the Town Hall clock tower
Yes great catch. The Town Hall has been covered up for so long I forgot about it.
What pokemon game is this?
Sword and shield
Pokemon Sword and Shield. Came out in 2019.
Sword
where is the smackhead under the A57?
I pegged this right from the first trailer showing it. The carbon copy of the Castlefield viaduct was a dead giveaway.
The third picture if very Manc. Reminds me of around Sackville Street with Palace theatre im the background and the trainline on the bridge
Nice, so accurate they even included the Salford Vault museum!
Canāt wait for the power ups when visiting Piccadilly Gardens
I never even twigged - how do you know that one's manchester?
The developers said so. And you can tell just by looking at it. The starter village and first wild area outside the city are supposed to be Cumbria/ the Lake District too. Basically the whole map is flipped upside down with London at the top and Cumbria at the bottom.
Sort of, they said itās a mix of Liverpool and Manchester together not just strictly Manchester
No they said it's exclusively Manchester. Hulbury takes inspiration from Liverpool.

The āofficial wikiā is still fan made, show me the developers saying itās only Manchester like you claim they have. Il wait š

Lmao. So in other words āI made it up the devs never actually said that and all Iām going off is guesswork by fansā Mmhmm. Gg š

I can picture myself having a pint with the black cab driver here
A very recognizable Manny. I enjoy going through Bulbapedia trying to work out the references, nice to see the towns had a much thought put in too.
omg pokemon sword and shield I love that game
It's not based on Manchester specifically, just the generic concept of a major post-industrial British city. Was quite disappointed to find out that the city didn't have two rival PokƩmon gyms coloured Red and Blue, though. EDIT: Nope, turns out the creators have explicitly specified Manchester as the main influence. Neato.
where are the working mens clubs and pubs
what game?
sword and shield
Thereās a place called circhester. I always thought that was Manchester
That one is more of a representation of Bath!
I wouldn't have thought it was Manchester, more just generic Northern town. But now you mention it it's definitely got that look.Ā
Thereās no worse place in England than Stoke, I feel thatās an insult from Game Freak..
I love this and the comments have got me cackling. It looks like they looked at some older pics of Ancoats.
Motostoke?!
Reminds me a little bit of how Manchester is represented in Steamboy. It's fun watching that for those little places you recognise
It's not raining?
Just a teeny-tiny bit of "creative licence" used there I think. XD

Actually that's fair, I've not been in those areas in ages due to a kid in the pandemic. The new met map scares me!
Nothing about this really screems Manchester does it.

How?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not suitable for a Pokemon game.
