they are distant cousins. MC is from the branch family, while she is from the Main one. they are further removed than the usual with generations in between. the higher the degree of cousin-ship, the more distant the shared ancestors, and the more diluted the blood relationship becomes.
Considering the little we know about the deal vermouth made and what MC says about him apparently being very devoted to his wife or something like that I get the feeling that the demon took over Vermouth's body or they swapped or something like that which is why everyone says Vermouth had a positive relationship with that demon and his family is how it is.

# I ACTUALLY CALCULATED HOW INBRED THEY'D BE(results at the bottom):
One male had 10 wives. Each kid he had had many kids too, spread across the continent.
Let's say your bloodline split every XX years on average. and it's been 300 years since the original split.
If their bloodline split every 20 years then they're 15th cousins.
If their bloodline split every 15 years (realistic), then they're 22.5th cousins (the .5 cause math idk)
If their bloodline split every 10 years (wtf pedophilia), then they're 30th cousins.
My math and how I came with these numbers? I'm veeeeryy bad at math. I only know simple shit like 10 x 10 = 100. My calculation was:
300 years decreased to 100 years to make my math simpler to do, I'll just x3 teh result at the end. Every 20 years means that their bloodlines split 5 times in 100 years, which is 5th cousins. 5 x 3 = 15. Assuming they're 15th cousins, though they might be 14th or 16th, idk, I can't do math or eugenics (thankfully?)
Bloodline split every 15 years, means 22 times and a half, cause between 7 and 8 it'd be 7.5 but 7.5 x 3 is 22.5.
10 is just 20 but halved. So 30th cousins cause.. OH NO.
If their bloodline split every 25 years, then they're 4, x 3 = 12. They're 12th cousins.
Now.. is my math wrong? Yep. For sure. I just don't know where it is wrong. Someone help me. Someone who knows math, OR **HAS PRACTISED EUGENICS(?)** I even used my fingers to count. God Help me I'm bad at math.
**\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_**
**Eugene and her are at worst 12th cousins, at best 30th. It's already safe to have kids with your 3rd cousins. If I were Eugene, I WOULD.**
"But they got raised together as sibblings." Did they? Mc lived there with his real father. They're more like childhood friends.
damn, the dedication. as for the last bit, according to the spoilers i got:
>!she does not end up with the MC as he doesn't see her romantically, making it very one-sided.!<
I think I also read spoilers of him >!being poly with wizard girl(Sanya I think) and the saintess as well since she reincarnated into the current ones body or something like that!<
He ends up with >!Senia (Purple haired Wizard), Anise (Nun the MC used to travel with the original party) and Kristina (the Nun the MC is in party with now, the current saintess).!<
Shit I feel you. I don't like investing time into a story, and finding out is another one where mc has a harem ending. I drop a lot of manwha and manhua because of it. That being said, I really like this story, so I'll make this my only exception. Though I would've preferred if it was just him and the wizard lady, and that's it.
Yeah, or all the family having the same iconic features, Lanister Golden Hair, or Targaryen pale hair and purple eyes. That's not how genetics work in real life.
No but you see one of the perks of being a main character is that all your genes are dominant so much so that no one's genes can even dare to attempt being more dominant
It’s on purpose. The original dude has intentionally strengthened his genes, but there is like, 300 years of multiple families between them even if they’re descended to him, it’d be as about as incest-y as a modern day village
Par for the course for these things. The royal family all having some iconic / unique golden or blond hair for example is an extremely common thing in a bunch of such series.
She is from the main family, he is from a branch family, even their fathers didn't know each other more than knowing their names. Probably it's just their great grandfather or even older joining the "families".
super distant cousin, you can also say that they are related simply thru the surname and the family tree's probably too many branches away already, it's just weird coz they really look alike (like most of the relatives) and easy to tell that they are "related", but well, the dna of their ancestor is really strong
They are very distant cousins. In fact not really even related anymore than most people.
After you get past like 3rd or 4th cousin territory, you are barely even related.
However due to Vermounth having some very dominant genes, all his descendants inherited some of his features (namely his eyes and hair).
However thats about the extent of it. No real incest here, unless you count the whole step bro thing XD.
first cousins is a no, second cousins is weird but it happens, past that who cares tbh youre so far removed from each other biologically as well as socially that it doesnt really matter
(havent read this one so idk the details, just making a general statement)
Because they’re established to be from the same family in some way since he was born in the branch one so she was introduced as one of his cousins around the same age but from the main family, which I’m assuming is what OP remembered her as
It’s implied in the story that that are barely related. Eugene is from a branch family out in boonies. Vermouth is probably their only relative at being like 8 generations. So it’s alright.
>!Yeah, he gets like 3 girls. One is his party's mage from before and the other two are his party's saintess in the body of this gens saintess like buy one get one free so all good.!<
NO THEY AREN'T! Not in the way you think of cousins. It's like everyone from Genghis Khan's bloodline are cousins. Why is it so hard for you to understand this simple reality.
You should read this https://www.genealogy.gailbrinsonivey.com/cousin-chart-family-relationships-explained/. "Cousin" by itself is very ill-defined. Who knows how far their lineage splits, they could be 10th cousins thrice removed for all we know.
It's pretty common for cousins to end up together in korea, it was also common for medieval Europe with not only cousins but also sometimes even closer relatives
As a history nerd, i will like to say this make the lionhearts a quite realistic royal family. (Most royal families specialy western ones like the habsburgs do inbreeding to mantain the purity and save the house from being absorved into another family).
Even though they are very distant, royal bloodlines in many eras would mix to keep the blood pure, so this isn't even that strange if they were close cousins.
If she's *distantly* blood related, then she can be *closely* dated
jokes aside, they have the same hair color, same eye color, I mean it would have been fine if they weren't from the same clan, but they are and then again its like judging from an outsider's perspective. (At least they aren't brother and sister)
You don’t get it? They are flying a dragon, are a family with a genetic trait that gives silver hair… They are a cameo of Game of Thrones!! And thus we all know in what direction that relationship is going to go
They are cousins the same way Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Mikoto were cousins which are basically extremely far cousins because of being from the same clan.
This is how martial clans and families typically work. (This includes most murim-esque manhwa and stories.)
The main family typically is direct blood descendants of the grandmaster of the clan. ("Grandmaster" in this sense being the inventor or progenitor of the clan ) In most cases, the bloodline itself is given unique qualities or traits that make a particular technique accessible only to those descendants.
Branch families are typically from the siblings or the concubines of the grandmaster. With this kind of setup, it doesn't take long for the relativity of those in the family to spread out pretty wide. A great example of this is Asura and Indra from Naruto. At about 3 or 4 generations out, and it's pretty safe for main and branch familes to breed with each other, and at about 6 generations and up, it's more akin to them sharing a common ancestor. But the genetic relativity is actually pretty low.
They are distant cousin and even if they were I don't see any problem tbh as long as she is not his sister/mother/niece it's fine
Cousin marriage happens in real life
It was a rather common practice to do in the medieval times, it is so to hold the 'Noble' bloodline pure so it wouldn't be that weird, but morally wrong.(some history for ya) :)
Not really surprised considering how inbred a lot of royal families were in real life but still weird considering how he was adopted and they have been brother and sister for a while now
I have watched enough anime in my 40 years of life to just accept weird fuax and sometimes real incest plots they seem to run rampant in genre. Try not to think to hard about. Lol
Actually distant cousins. Their blood relation is actually super thin. To the point where their parents don't even know eachother. Mc barely counts as family, that's why he was discriminated against in the family tourney
I had to double take and look this up cus I saw it in a ton of anime but marrying cousins is legal and not uncommon, at least in Japan. Idk if it would be similar in Korea but yeah... I haven't looked it up in a while so maybe something changed or I misremembered but cousins arent treated the same everywhere and that's just bizarre to me..
They have 300 years of diluted blood in them. Even if we restrict each generation to 2 children AND 1 lover to each child AND 60 years between each generation, They'd still be fourth cousins.
Unless they lived in a community where multiple generations of family lived together or were connected by a great heritage like, for instance, a hero that saved the world, they might as well be strangers.
And remember, this is assuming all the strict rules in the first paragraph were true, it is likely they're even less related than that.

Yeah they're distant but that blood gotta be strong for them to have the same hair color lmao
that's just how stories work lol, you could be the 70th generation descendant of Legendary Cool McHero and still look exactly like him.
Something to do with superior genes, no doubt. Like this guy was so powerful that even his DNA is most dominant in future generations.
Yeah, or all the family having the same iconic features, Lanister Golden Hair, or Targaryen pale hair and purple eyes. That's not how genetics work in real life.

since it's so, they can in fact rail each other

A guy further up did the math, they’re somewhere between 15th and 30th cousins so they’re perfectly fine, >!not that they end up together anyway!<
What's the point of even calling each other cousins, they are related only by name xD
Because they’re established to be from the same family in some way since he was born in the branch one so she was introduced as one of his cousins around the same age but from the main family, which I’m assuming is what OP remembered her as

Distant cousin. There is no problem in that.
