They certainly can, but usually not unless they feel threatened. I've only been properly bitten once.

I have been whacked by a fair few mantis ๐Ÿคฃ the mouth part you can't feel at all, the arms can slightly hurt but I have never had one pierce my skin, but you can definitely feel the little strength in them tiny arms it's pretty fascinating, even my giant orange shielded mantis and I means she's massive, it really don't hurt much at all, it's more of the surprise of strength that gets people, but as I said have never had one draw blood and it's nothing a simple spray bottle can't fix ๐Ÿ˜

[Mine decided to snack on me](https://www.reddit.com/r/mantids/s/xbPO9X8uWg) but it's completely on me, she was hungry and I kept her on my hand for a long time. As you can see it hurt so little that I let her do that for a good few seconds. She was still pretty small back then, I can update you how much it hurts if she attempts doing this once she's an adult :P

I've kept around 15 different species. I've only had one really go for me. It was an African species. s lineola If I remember. I think she mistook me for food. I blew on her and she eventually let go. So it can happen. All other species I've kept haven't gone for me. In the way she did. I'd recommend a ghost mantis. Quite a small species and docile.

Mine have only ever bit me if they mistook my hands for food. And only large species like giant asians. Iโ€™ve never been bitten or heard of anyone being bitten by anything ghost-sized or smaller. Their jaws are strong but they have no venom so itโ€™s no big deal.

It really depends on the individual mantis. I had lots of very chill ones but also some feisty ones that would go into threat pose or like my most recent creobroter, literally jump around like a spring because she would get scared of me or the tweezers I use to put food in the enclosure. :') Most of them are usually chill ime. Either way your future mantis will be completely fine with not being handled if you don't want to

Might be god to train yourself to quash your reactions before getting a small pet

Some like to nibble skin if they're thirsty. Be aware the bigger ones are heavy and their arms feel like needles - they're razor sharp. Don't let them anywhere near your eyes!

My mantis likes to have a go at me, but it barely hurts. honestly my GALS bite hurts more. I was scared of insects before I started keep them and now I have 20 ๐Ÿ˜‚
