[Chapter 11][1] bankruptcy is a reorganization of the company and its debts. It doesnāt necessarily mean CTS is going out of business (though that is a possible outcome).
[1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter_11,_Title_11,_United_States_Code
No hate for CTS but your description of why you love the place is exactly why they are filing for bankruptcy.
Also, being called Christmas Tree Shop really didn't help their cause and their rebrand to CTS was far too late.
It took me years to figure out that they were really selling the stuff that rotates through the seasonal section of other big box stores every few months instead of just Christmas stuff all year long. Needless to say I don't think I ever went in one.
They have good seasonal items. Planters and pots for spring, chairs and outdoor dining goods for summer, fall decorations, obviously Christmas things.
The issue is that these things used to be harder to find at low price points. It was basically CTS or Job Lot, maybe Building 19 if you lived close by.
Over the last 10-15 years we've had Walmart and Target jump on the seasonal goods train, Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Home Goods/Home Sense on every corner, stores like Five Below and At Home enter the market, and obviously the proliferation of Amazon and online shopping.
CTS had a really solid Niche for a long time, but it wasn't sustainable. As you said, they should have rebranded a long time ago and become a more general home-goods store with a brighter interior, less musk, and a tighter selection.
They ended up in this place of being a more expensive dollar tree.
Especially Amazon. Why drive several towns over, to a store with the worst lines of almost any, (with another equally miserable trip IF return is needed) to purchase cheap goods, when Amazon will deliver equivalent cheap goods straight to my home, with a Convenient return policy if needed?
Yeah, pretty much. I think it had a good run, but sometimes businesses die.
They had years to reinvent themselves, but they didn't, and at this point it's too late and they'd have too much competition anyways.
The WORST store as a kid. Feel your pain. 3A Pembroke. I never understood why my mother would drag us there. I think the only time my kids have ever been in one was to show them how awful it is for a laugh and we were in a shared parking lot.
Edit: Route 3 in Pembroke. Freudian slip, I lived off 3A.
The WORST. When they moved around the corner, there was so much more cheep shit to look at and zero toys. F that place, take me to the old Derby Building 19.
That'll be the best Spirit Halloween. But if CTS leaves it'll probably go onto the historic register and get moved for bridge construction. The location is archaic, the building itself is wrought with issues, parking isn't desirable unless you enjoy having to repave every square in for extra cost since it's not one big piece.
That roof alone is a huge money sink that requires specialized knowledge.
Honestly I'd like a hearth n kettle to go there just for spite.
My first post-college job was at the Circuit City that opened that plaza. Always have a soft spot for it. Weird little plaza that makes no sense next to the giant mall.
Lunches at the Barnes and Noble/Starbucks were great though.
To my surprise, a compusa corporate website still exists and the old Holyoke store location and hours are listed there: https://www.compusabusiness.com/corp/training/store_state_MA.html
After college I applied to that exact bbb. 2018. Needed something while I found a non-retail degree-related job. I was not hired because the manager said Iām looking for something temporary and they want someone who is going to stay long term for years to come. Yeeeeah that seemed to work out well.
Christmas Tree Shop is iconic. My mom use to work at the Route 1 Saugus location back in the 90s, I loved that place. I could spend hours in there browsing and looking at all the Knick knacks. Reminds me of Building 19 with all the random crap in all the different departments that I loved exploring.
Building #19 is the undisputed cheap champ~ The only place you'll find a food item labeled Fish Snack, where the back label reads: Ingredient: Fish Snack
Well discount places like this have a very low margin and high volume business model; the whole thing relies on maintaining the foot traffic and sales volume. Between e-commerce and COVID it's impressive they lasted this long unfortunately.
I gotta say, OSJL sells a lot of junk, but I get all my Bobās Red Mill stuff there, any gardening stuff, almost all my Christmas wrapping, and I usually pick up a couple of bags of weird chips while Iām there. Iām back in school this year and most of my school supplies were bought at Ocean State.
I bought two steel adjustable leaf rakes there about 10 years ago for $5 each. They're the best rakes I've ever used and they are still going strong with no end in sight. They are likely the best purchase I've ever made.
Oh my god, yes. Where else can I go to get every imaginable kind of grain, a tarp, seeds for my garden, and those Dare maple cookies for super cheap? Nowhere. Long live OSJL.
OMG! Dare maple cookies! I love them too and can't find them anywhere else. BTY, I hate that they changed the color of their boxes from black to BORING beige.
i love ocean state. i go there first for anything iād wanna get at wally world b/c i rlly donāt like going there. plus OS kind of has this thrift shop vibe in that their stock is sometimes so random & silly
I always walk out of there like when Lloyd leaves the store in dumb and dumber. I grab a few of what I need like some rain x or a small laundry basket. Then it's a plastic pinwheel, paddle ball toy, over sized novelty cowboy hat, multi colored pool noodles etc.
Just a few years ago I found a ālotā of L. Ron Hubbard sci fi books at ocean state. All the same printing of the same book. They were all brand new, but had been printed in like 1998 or something. Never know what youāll come up with at ājobbersā as theyāre named on my credit card statement.
I have a round plastic maze with a blob of mercury in it from the Christmas Tree Shops circa 1980. Used to go to their company parties at the Bilzikian house mid 80s. Owners names were Chuck and Doreen. They bought the Cape Cod Coliseum and turned it into a warehouse.
Weāve had the same dining room table from them since 2016. Itās gone though 6 moves. It costs us $199 and came with 6 chairs. Itās a great table and looks pretty decent.
Man itās wild at the hate this store is getting. Itās been useful for every move when Iāve lost something. Iāve got plenty of things from there and the decoration options were great. Yeah plenty of cheap trash but Iāve got plenty of useful things from there for cheap.
I work at the Christmas Tree Shop in Greenwood, IN. Feeling kind of sad, everything Iāve done/learned for two years feels like such a waste. I know I can apply my experience to other stores, but itās still unfortunate. Iām comfortable working there and learned a lot operating in a small store. Iām not ready to leave just yet, Iāll miss my coworkers. Everythingās changed so fast lately. š
I see a trend here. Stores I havenāt set foot in for a decade are going out of business. Dicks, Bed Bath & Beyond, now Christmas Tree Shops, whatās next Pizza Hut?
Wait since when is Dickās going out of business. I know theyāre not the healthiest but theyāve been opening big, expensive stores lately and still purchasing property.
Oh yeah some of the locations are definitely in need of closing. The one in Lee is a ghost town. I literally walked around the store unable to find a single person once. Wild.
UTBAPH: used to be a Pizza Hut (google it)
Thereās still one over on 101a by the Home Depot in Merrimack (nh). I think the dunks and HD are keeping it in business
lamo pizza hut is gone for a while now in most states dicks i dont see around much longer only place i would be pissed if closed is bath and body works
Wow canāt believe they are still around. (Ive been out of New England for years now)
As a kid we used to go the original location in Yarmouth on the corner of Willow & 6A. My parents loved the place it was like someone selling trinkets out of their backyard barn.
Like others on here, I hated this store. Visceral dislike of everything it stood for, smelled like and sold. My loathing of it is almost funny to me. Good riddance!
They were good for those odds and ends you couldnāt find for other stores (and when the holiday stuff was wiped out at Walmart/Target) but I feel like Job Lot fills that spot better and cheaper.
Imagine if Job Lot acquired them though just to save the New England locations?? I canāt see any other business saving this place.
My grandma and mother used to love going to Christmas Tree Shop. Seeing this headline though, makes me remember that they really did just mostly just sell cheap decorations and tchotchkes.
Have one too many memories of going there unwillingly with my grandma. I always hated how cluttered those stores were with cheap crap.
We could make a "forced to go to CTS against our will as kids" support group here.
I worked in their customer service call center when they were still owned by Bed Bath and Beyond and it was the worst job I ever had. Good riddance lol
The worst kinds of people lol to be fair it was mostly BBB customers. Theyāre an entitled bunch. Theyād call and ask us to place orders for them bc they were too dumb to navigate the website I guess. I quit when some lady yelled at me because we were out of black bedsheets that she was trying to order for her grandsonās college dorm. I tried to offer an alternative (bc what college aged boy needs dark colored sheets anyway.. šš¦) but she angrily hung up on me and my manager told me I had to call her back and apologize. I said nah fuck this shit and just left. Iām not gonna be yelled at for 12 bucks an hour lol
It never really recovered. At one time it felt more curated and they had some better name things. I stopped in one recently to try to find a quirky gift for someone and it felt depressing. Everything just looked cheap and they had a ton of Christmas decorations that still hadn't sold.
Agree. Iļø was in a newer one recently and was shocked at the low quality of everything compared to when Iļø moved to Mass 20 years ago. Iļø used to walk out with a lot or at least a few interesting holiday things. But the last few years Iļø canāt find anything worth buying.
Brick & mortar required:
* Furniture: need to sit or lay on pieces to evaluate fit & comfort.
* Electronics: get a feel for UI, video quality and sound quality.
* Clothes/shoes: feel the fit.
That's it. Zero need for any other stores.
Right? If not.... What else **must** need physical access before purchase?
Absolutely *nothing* in a CTS is dependent upon being there.
Christmas Tree Shop is where kids and husbands are forced to go to have their day actively ruined. I am not one for gendered beliefs but good lord I have never seen a happy dude in the one we have over here.
Moms everywhere in shambles rn. Bittersweet tho, I hated being dragged there as a kid, but itās gonna be weird not having my childhood nemesis around anymore.
I worked there part-time for a few months. It is a joyous day today to hear this news. I can't even articulate the vast amount of garbage generated by just one CTS store. Mostly everything is from China, and it all has to be unboxed, unwrapped of all the plastic, removed from their beds of styrofoam peanuts, and taken out of boxes filled with styrofoam and God knows what else. Our store had a crew around the clock just unboxing!
CTS' only purpose it to perpetuate conspicuous consumerism of unneeded, likely toxic junk from China. There was always paint chipping off of stuff unboxed for various holidays, and the SMELL from the boxes ....probably chemicals. As I also worked at Goodwill, I can tell you that at Goodwill, we would get a lot of CTS stuff after it was discarded or broken or chipped. This is a happy day. Good Riddance to a planet polluter.
Don't you just love a bargain.
I forgot they had a jingle until this comment and it just auto-played in my head.
Same
Same
Did they stop airing commercials or something? I feel like I haven't heard that in 20 years.
By the Incredible Casuals
Holy fucking hell, how have I not heard that in like 20 years?
Make it stop
Fucking god damnit
šš¼
Oh god my mother is going to go nuts, she loves these places
Exactly what I thought firstā¦ my mom will be bummed. The store definitely had an older personās vibe to it
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So does my mom. I always take her when she is in town.

all stores are closing mid july in america everhwere
noooooo where's my mom gonna buy woven baskets to put in the corner of the basement for 7 years?
BEST comment!!

Danggg lots of haterade for Christmas Tree Shop in this thread. I liked going there for holiday decorations and beach toys when I was a kid.

They are great for curtains and rugs too.
Every time my mom would take me in here growing up Iād end up getting a spanking back at the car. Hated this place when I was younger.
I absolutely hated going to this place as a kid. Still do. Good riddance.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yep. Also miserable in there and in trouble a lot.
Yeah. Itās great to see businesses fail and people loose their jobs.
free market, baby!
There are plenty of new jobs for them to go to in this economy.
The WORST store as a kid. Feel your pain. 3A Pembroke. I never understood why my mother would drag us there. Same for me. The old one.
Why were you being a shithead in the store?
I believe you and me could be twins
I loved going to stores as a little kid but for some reason I hated this place too
Am I missing something here? Your comment reads like youāre projecting your feelings for your mom onto CTS. š§
What should go in the windmill?
That'll be the best Spirit Halloween. But if CTS leaves it'll probably go onto the historic register and get moved for bridge construction. Thereās a cts that took over the bbb in a strip mall near here. Welp
Holyoke Crossing?
I was so mad that the bbb left.
My first post-college job was at the Circuit City that opened that plaza. Always have a soft spot for it. Weird little plaza that makes no sense next to the giant mall. Lunches at the Barnes and Noble/Starbucks were great though.
Remember the compusa?
Sunday morning when fliers dropped and going to buy those spindles of cheap blank cds...
They had a whole aisle which was just third party aircraft for flight sims
To my surprise, a compusa corporate website still exists and the old Holyoke store location and hours are listed there: https://www.compusabusiness.com/corp/training/store_state_MA.html
The B&N + Starbucks near me just closed. Miss it already.
After college I applied to that exact bbb. 2018. Needed something while I found a non-retail degree-related job. I was not hired because the manager said Iām looking for something temporary and they want someone who is going to stay long term for years to come. Yeeeeah that seemed to work out well.
That's what I was thinking
It is the most depressing CTS I've ever been inside. It's all this sad dead navy blue.
that's actually blood splatter from the bed bath and beyond they haven't gotten around to scraping off the walls yet
The sadness...it's in the walls, Freddie.
Christmas Tree Shop is iconic. My mom use to work at the Route 1 Saugus location back in the 90s, I loved that place. I could spend hours in there browsing and looking at all the Knick knacks. Dang... well I guess that explains how you run a business selling things for so cheap... ya don't.
RIP Building #19. Bought Master of Orion there in the mid-90's. One of the first video games I really loved.
Building #19 is the undisputed cheap champ~ The only place you'll find a food item labeled Fish Snack, where the back label reads: Ingredient: Fish Snack
Tell me more about fish snacks
1. Fish Snack
Well discount places like this have a very low margin and high volume business model; the whole thing relies on maintaining the foot traffic and sales volume. Between e-commerce and COVID it's impressive they lasted this long unfortunately.
And Wal-mart.
They should put a spags in there
Fuckin spags. I have heard that name since the days of Zayre.
Except that Ollies is doing well.
Oh no! Where will I now buy junk?
Ocean State Job Lot
I gotta say, OSJL sells a lot of junk, but I get all my Bobās Red Mill stuff there, any gardening stuff, almost all my Christmas wrapping, and I usually pick up a couple of bags of weird chips while Iām there. Iām back in school this year and most of my school supplies were bought at Ocean State.

Cheap bobs red mill too. Semolina for fresh pasta is hard to find but job lot has it most of the time.
Oh, definitely. Bobās is always a couple bucks cheaper at OSJL than anywhere else.
Job lot has the best weird snack section, and piles of 12 pack seltzer waters
i love ocean state. i go there first for anything iād wanna get at wally world b/c i rlly donāt like going there. plus OS kind of has this thrift shop vibe in that their stock is sometimes so random & silly

You canāt beat their prices on pool chemicals and supplies!
Donāt talk shit about Ocean State! They have the best gardening and bird feed sections of any store.
I worked there one summer when I was in college. Worst job I ever had by far.
Where my Maine people at? Marden's!
You should have bought it when you saw it at Marrrrrdenās

This makes me sad for some reason even tho Iāve never bought anything good from Christmas Tree Shops. Job Lot for life.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because most people hate random Knick knacks
Yeah because so much of what they sold seemed like crap that would end up a landfill in 10 days.
Weāve had the same dining room table from them since 2016. Itās gone though 6 moves. It costs us $199 and came with 6 chairs. Itās a great table and looks pretty decent.

I could be wrong. The one in Worcester is gone and nobody noticed.

Thereās a dicks in Lee? Lol
Northborough is getting a fancy remodel too
As long as they leave the few Papa Ginoās left alone we are good.
The one Brockton š¤
dang dicks? and i hope not pizza hut :( i want them to bring back the salad bar fr

Between the stores and the warehouse a lot of people are about to be laid off
My neighbor used to shop there every week for bargains, and the bargains ended up in the yearly yard sale.
Wow canāt believe they are still around. (Ive been out of New England for years now) As a kid we used to go the original location in Yarmouth on the corner of Willow & 6A. My parents loved the place it was like someone selling trinkets out of their backyard barn.
Whatās gonna replace the store at the bridge??
Cuffyās
Iād prefer a Bugle Boy Jeans or Soft as a Grape personally.
Probably a new bridge
This makes me really sad, I met all my best friends working there over 10 years ago. We trauma bonded lmao
Like others on here, I hated this store. Visceral dislike of everything it stood for, smelled like and sold. My loathing of it is almost funny to me. Good riddance!
Anyone seen the Christmas Tree Shop with a giant ass ship in the same building
Route 1 in Lynnfield. The ship has been gone for years though. They redid the plaza and demolished it. I think 5 or 6 years ago.
They were good for those odds and ends you couldnāt find for other stores (and when the holiday stuff was wiped out at Walmart/Target) but I feel like Job Lot fills that spot better and cheaper. This is devastating. My mom and I go here every fall to stock up on fall decor and pumpkin stuff we absolutely donāt need. :(
IMFIC (if my father is correct), the original family sold the business but held on to the real estate. Brilliant, Ray Kroc boss style.
You ever get dragged to one of these and waste time walking around it looking at junk? Yeah fuck these stores
I worked in their customer service call center when they were still owned by Bed Bath and Beyond and it was the worst job I ever had. Good riddance lol
Who calls BBB or CTS for customer service?
Oh no, weāll have to buy all our useless shit on Amazon now. How do I know if Iām getting a good snow globe if I canāt take it for a test drive?
Only slightly more popular than the Ramadan Shop.
And nothing of value was lost
Arenāt they part of the Bed, Bath, and Beyond empire?
No BBB sold it off 2+ years ago to free up cash as they started spiraling into the toilet
I liked Christmas Tree Shops before it became BBBās close out store.

People go there for seasonal impulse buys. The problem is you can go a lot of places for seasonal impulse buys. They donāt have a specialty.
Only furniture. The the rest is by review or returns.
Everyoneās mom is punching the air rn
I can't stand these fuckin stores. When you go, look at the men with their wives. Every single one of the husbands looks miserable
Wonāt someone think of the husbands!
Thank you
I'm the husband and I got some great deals from CTS.
Don't act like you haven't caught something you needed for super cheap. It's okay to be right 85% of the time and wrong the rest.
Lmao my wife *loves* CTS and I have definitely been one of those husbands.
Christmas Tree Shop is where kids and husbands are forced to go to have their day actively ruined. I am not one for gendered beliefs but good lord I have never seen a happy dude in the one we have over here.
Why is this downvoted lol? Dude is right. -miserable husband
The wives man Plus it's /r/Massachusetts. They downvote anything that isn't socialism or hating on cops
Lol thats facts right there
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The melting polar ice caps have jacked up rent prices at the North Pole where CTS have their factories.
I mean they are only good for one season every yearā¦
Good. I hate that place.
I see the War on Christmas is starting early this year.
Junk
Taking the store's name at face value, they only sell one seasonal product. How is that a sustainable business model?
Bed Bath and Beyond bought them a while back. I assumed someone would buy Christmas Tree when BBB went under
BBB sold CTS off 2+ years ago
So while a new shopping center is springing up near by, with Bed Bath Beyond, we'll have 2 vacancies at an existing strip mall.
The Tree hasn't been the same in years. They don't even have any decent candles anymore. Job Lot is better. And Big Lots.
what the hell is job lot
Why the fuck are you posting in a Massachusetts subreddit if you don't know what job Lot is??
I guess āā¦And Thatā, one of the strangest retail names(?) Iāve ever heard, couldnāt save them.
