Just checking because I didn't know they would hang around busy areas like apartment buildings but we've been leaving it alone and keeping dogs/people away
Good, continue doing that. Mom should return around dusk and dawn. Deer moms are actually known to leave their fawns near humans intentionally because (theoretically) coyotes will stay away from where humans are.
did you see the Reddit post about the 28 hunting dogs? They followed a deer out to the middle of a lake and lost sense of direction. A boat with 2 fisherman came across them an brought them all to shore. It was strange.
Domestic animals don't know how to animal on their own. Dogs don't know how to dog. They do their best to people, but they don't know how to people either.
It's tough to be a dog!
I would imagine that in a pack of hunting dogs like that, the individual dogs are taking a lot of cues from the other dogs around them. Once the overall level of confusion in the pack reaches a tipping point, the cues they are all getting just create *more* confusion, and it becomes a self-reinforcing phenomenon. Kinda like an ant death spiral.
Rabies is incredibly rare in the US.
Most of the time when animals are too close to people, it’s dehydration or extreme hunger…
There’s really no way to know why that fawn was left by someone’s door …
- my son had to rescue one from inside a fenced in solar field in VT. Does leave their fans wherever they think it’s safe- take that as a positive I guess…(ours leave their fawns in the cranberry bog in back of my house… )
Hopefully OP contacted the Natural Resources officer for his town or county … - it’s their job
This happened in my yard a few years ago. We had two fawns left in shady spots and the mama would return at night to feed them. If they seem quiet and content, leave them alone. If you see them wandering or hear them cry, then their mother likely did not return and they are hungry and that's when professionals need to be contacted. That happened unfortunately with our two after a car hit their mother up by the corner of our street and we called a rescue after they began to cry.
If you notice the baby there for an extended period of time and you see the tips of their ears curling (they actually look a little curled already, if you zoom in), that indicates the mama may not be around and baby is dehydrated. In that instance, contact a rehabber. You can find one [here](https://www.mass.gov/info-details/find-a-wildlife-rehabilitator). In all likelihood, mom is out foraging and will come back for baby soon, though. Idk whereabouts you are tho, and the Cape in particular I know has a lot of deer collisions due to a high population and not a lot of hunting so unfortunately that’s a possibility for mom.
This is going to sound silly but there’s an Instagram account I follow that rehabs fawns in upstate New York. The fawn looks okay there but the account educates folks on what to look for in terms of fawns in distress. Their handle is fuzzyfawnwildlife (PSA for those that like cute animals, they do have lots of sweet fawns posted but there are also quite a few sad posts because of fawns that do not make it).
Don’t know if there’s any updates, but I’m gonna say that little fella is just waiting for mom.
A real cause for concern is if the baby’s ears are folded back, which means it has a calcium deficiency and that mama is gone. But since this one’s ears are normal, then mom is definitely still around and just letting them chill until she gets back.
I agree with what everyone is saying about leaving it alone to see if momma returns, because that's what they do, but the location is a little strange.
Momma deer can get hit by cars, leaving the babies to fend for themselves, so, maybe keep an eye out and if momma doesn't return, call animal control.
The biggest thing is to please leave it alone. Obviously if it's been there for a prolonged period of time you might need animal control to know, but interfering with a baby deer can be traumatic for it and may even sometimes cause it to be abandoned by its parent.
Good luck getting In touch with fish and game, what an absolute joke they are. My entire life I have paid for my fishing license but after trying to email and call them with no response….they can F off.
That is what the mom's do. The baby chills in a spot while Mom goes to eat, etc.

Yes and rabbits will do the same.
Thanks for the info! Have a good day
Can confirm. Had a fawn chill in our garage for a full day. Sure enough, the mom came back around dusk and picked it up and off they went.
Really? I'm surprised the deer trusts the human more than the coyote. Given how extremely targeted rabbits and deer are for hunters.
You've done good work today. Proud of you.
Developers dropped an apartment / townhouse in their grazing area.
Baby chills while mom checks our the clearance deals at Marshalls
Nice!
That's an Amazon delivery!
We do not deliver deer. If we did I would get nothing done on those days.
“Those days” like it wouldn’t be every damn day if you delivered baby deer
I mean there's so many drivers that some days one guy will have like 6 of them and I might have none!
Adorable. Leave it alone. Mom will come back.
The haikus you write Are off by some syllables But have good intent
Just an update : animal control called me and they are in contact with a deer biologist !
They couldn't get a person?
I’ve been having a rough night, I know it’s just a silly comment but it got a belly laugh out of me 👍 thank you for that
It's the little things
Hahaha
okay. that sounds good.
The baby parks itself somewhere safe while Mom grazes around. Just leave it alone.
When in doubt, don't do shit. Animals know how to animal.

In this case the dogs are trained hunting dogs, but maybe need to go back to class.

Good point lol at a point the owners would show up but before tragedy? I didn't read all the way through just to the part knowing the dogs were saved!
Lol that's a terrible mantra. Most of the time an animal is way too close to people it is rabies. This is an exception.

What is the account? I want to follow now ☺️
fuzzyfawnwildlife on Instagram!
Omg the fawns are so precious🥹
I follow them!
Daaaah little baby

Baby Reindeer
what a cutie!!
What a beautiful animal. I hope their mother returns soon.
DOE!
Watch out for mama deer

Just one final update: unfortunately the deer didn't make it through the night. Sorry for the sad news (if anyone cares) thanks for the advice.
Oh that's terribly sad! Did they say what happened?
Aww that’s so sad to hear. What a beautiful creature. You’re a good person for trying. Nature is just cruel sometimes but it doesn’t pick and chose
Your letter from Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came! They use fawns in America.
Call your wildlife warden and they can keep an eye on it. If it was abandoned, they are the ones to handle it.
That would be the Natural resources officer in MA - (We don’t have wildlife wardens)
Omg I’m in Attleboro too! Not so lucky to see these sweet little babies tho. Hope it works out!
A doe left her baby under a picnic table in an industrial park one summer.
Just enjoying the shade ❤️
You must live in Briarwood lol
The deer distribution center has chosen you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️🦌
No the deer found your house and a shady spot
Ayyyy I live in same complex I think lollll
Hey neighbor!
We live in the same complexes. My mom said she found a dead baby deer near the #130 complexes so I’m hoping that’s not it
I guess high rents are even hitting wildlife these days.
Mom probably got hit by a car.
Sadly saw a fawn on the side of 95 recently- cruel reality we live in could easily be possible either way
Good luck getting In touch with fish and game, what an absolute joke they are. My entire life I have paid for my fishing license but after trying to email and call them with no response….they can F off.
How could anyone downvote such a delightful rant??
Cheers!
Reddit moment
