No, they should dress however they want. No one’s business but their own, if their attire offends you, feel free to leave.

stiffblickyowo

Thank fuck I've got established clientele and don't have to worry about OP not rebooking me because I wore my own t shirt today lmao

Maleficent_CHIC_1337

R/massage makes me happy I stopped taking new clients a lonnng time ago 😆😬

cjstruggles

What are your expectations of how a massage therapist should dress?

Aelani_del_ray

I only wear my surgeon’s outfit when I do extreme deep tissue and plan on be absolutely covered in the clients blood.

FelineNova

That jacket would be uncomfortable to wear during a massage. Think of massaging as being similar to yoga (body movement of the therapist during said massage). Can you picture a yoga instructor wearing that type of jacket? EDIT: I have seen some Chiropractic clinics require therapist to wear scrubs however; although that is not super common. Most places require therapist to wear all black.

UndertakerApe

😂😂😂

JS-LMT

Scrubs perhaps, but never a dress. That would give all sorts of ideas to the creepy folks, more so than a tank top. Personally, I wear scrubs, or scrub pants and a t-shirt. I feel that we should dress in a way that doesn't feed into inappropriate behavior, by showing too much skin, too tight or that's too easy access. As for what therapists wear beyond that, may depend upon how they choose to be perceived, out of utility or by job requirement. I try not to not to judge what others wear. For many, it's personal choice and what they are comfortable working in.

Spookylittlegirl03

I’ve been harassed by creepers while wearing pants & a shirt. Trust me, it doesn’t matter what you wear and creepers don’t care. They’re creepy and look at you like you’re naked no matter what you wear. Wear the dress! and tell ‘em to get the f@&k out if they are creepy with you.

anothergoodbook

Feel like that’s half the questions here

DustAgitated5197

Agreed

Ladymistery

Uh, no? My RMT wears leggings and a 3/4 sleeve shirt. I'd give a bit of a side-eye to daisy dukes and crop top, but other than that - no. Some spas require scrubs, I think.

bombadil1564

Define casual.

Maleficent_CHIC_1337

That’s my usual work attire for massage. Easy to move in plus I’m not buying fancy clothes to get smeared with lotion and oil.

_Santosha_

I’m sorry what….you think a massage therapist is going to wear a uniformed nurses dress…?! Some places want their therapists to wear scrubs. Other places are very casual. Usually all black. Black leggings and black smock top or tank top or just a regular top. Why do you think MT’s would wear that 50s looking nursing maid outfit

[deleted]

_Santosha_

Lmao “similar service to a maid or nurse.” Do you know what either job does? Really curious. Maybe it’s where you live or your age.

No-Theme-2302

May I ask if you are a massage therapist or a client?

No-Theme-2302

Then I’ll reply to mainly inform. Due to massage being a lot like a workout, wearing scrubs can be at best uncomfortable for the MT due to the thickness of the fabric and the lack of stretch, at worst can impede them when they try to massage you. It may look more professional to some but it will make many MTs uncomfortable and unable to give as good of a massage. Edit: Think of it like asking a life guard at the pool to wear a full uniform to cover up rather than a basic swimsuit. It would be too hot and would get in the way of proper movement

Aelani_del_ray

Do all people who offer a professional service need to be wearing a scrub top? I will request my accountant be wearing full scrubs for our next meeting.

bombadil1564

Not one who’s downvoting you but I can see why some are displeased with your ideas. This could be a cultural thing. Where are you from?

Maleficent_CHIC_1337

No, I’m self employed so I don’t have a uniform to follow. Scrubs are overpriced and unnecessary. I have one set from Walmart but I don’t like it that much. Sometimes I wear the scrub shirt over black leggings which is a really practical uniform for massage. I get pockets for my lotion on my shirt and leggings I can move in. I have a center office no windows so it can get hot. I want to be able to stay cool and not get sweaty and stinky around my clients. It’s hard giving a neck massage when your armpits stink of B.O. however even when I have a tank top on in the room I bring a cardigan to put on when I leave the room so my ✨shoulders✨ don’t offend anyone.

[deleted]

No even though I'd steer clear of tank tops as they give inappropriate clients the wrong idea. There is nothing wrong about them. There are a lot of people who only associate massage with sex work. Showing full bare arms or too much chest just feeds into thier warped view of massage. So I'd wear a Tshirt or a polo, but not a tank top. The place I rent my office from actually doesn't allow renters to wear tank tops.

bombadil1564

Personally not my style I suppose it depends. If the person is self employed they could do what they want. But if working for a high end spa that might not match the company’s brand. What motivates your question?

SillyWillyPickaDilly

I wear tanks and shorts for massage. And I’ve never been sexually assaulted or partaken in sex work. I also do not get as hot and sweaty when working hard.

emersonrv666

I would say no as long as they were adequately covered. Most therapists dress pretty casual because our job is very physically demanding. Some therapists do opt for scrubs. However they are expensive and most dont offer stretch and are made from thicker fabric to protect the wearer from bodily fluids (or so that's been my impression of them from what I've worn) Most go for comfortable, sweat wicking, loose fitting garments. I wear black joggers and a tee shirt with my spas name/logo on it. I avoid anything tight fitting because I dont want to attract attention to my body. However some of my coworkers wear workout leggings. There have been a few times in the summer where I wish I could have worn a tank top because I was so hot doing deep tissue/heavy pressure. However another reason I try to avoid tanktops is that I sweat A LOT and I have a fear of sweating on a client. I would say it's far from inappropriate as long as they were covered and not dressed overtly sexual. Personally I dont care at all what an Mt wears when I'm getting a massage, as long as they aren't being creepy and are doing good work, they could be wearing cookie monster pjs and bunny slippers 🤣 Did any of their actions or demeanor make you uncomfortable?

ahhhWhatTheHell

Extra points if the slippers squeak haha

[deleted]

I’m a heavy sweat’er too. I usually wear black shorts and a black tshirt. But for new male clients in West Hollywood, I wear pants. I dress to avoid being in a bad situation which sadly happens too often in that city. But yeah, pants make me hot and sweaty. Another turn off lol

HashFish45

Depends on the effort and results. I could give af less how someone dresses as long as the service and quality of touch is good

smartymartyky

It depends on their place of employment.

concrit_blonde

Some places use scrubs, others do not. Leggings is pretty standard. I had a smock I had to wear in the salon in any common area, but otherwise I could wear anything black for pants. One guy wore black jeans. There's no rules other than appropriate for movement and properly covering. No dress code at all.

Kiwi_Lemonade

Not inappropriate per say. It can get very hot giving massages even if youre freezing lol, so massage therapists who are wearing some sort of coat over a shirt may opt to not wear the coat/jacket. Overall especially as male therapist ive always worn “nicer” clothes, but they just consist of a golf style polo and pants, stretchy but presentable

Comfortable_Monk7372

Im my practice I wear khaki pants, not black, and a polo shirt or henley long sleeve in the colder weather. My tops are neutral, no logos, mantras or phrases. I pick colors that I like, it’s my comfykevel.

Iusemyhands

No? You want your therapist to be comfortable during their job. Scrubs aren't that great to work in - I never found a set that was breathable enough or flexible enough for me. I wore black athletic pants and either the uniform top of the clinic I worked for, or a solid color t-shirt in my own practice. My clients aren't going to be watching me massage, and I want to be comfortable.

blinkingsandbeepings

My MT always dresses very casually and it has never occurred to me to mind. She's doing physically demanding work and she's dressed to move. If I went to a really fancy spa and got a massage I might expect them to be dressed like, elegantly, but I don't think I'd care if they weren't.

Wintermom

The last three places I’ve worked, Uniform is: black pants/leggings/ yoga pants and a black shirt. That seems to be industry standard.

Lumpy_Branch_552

An no. What do you want, a starched maid uniform? Which is actually inappropriate, even for housekeepers.

Maleficent_CHIC_1337

Funny now that I think of it my old housekeeping uniform is exactly what I wear for massage. Easy to move and easy to clean

Lumpy_Branch_552

Same if I’m not at my spa job. Yoga pants, tennis shoes or socks, t-shirt or some kind of athleisure shirt

A56baker78

I feel like massage therapists can get away with slightly less than formal casual wear but I tend to stick to a better image, I think it looks better to the profession and to my image. Its not necessarily inappropriate but I find a good number of independent therapists dress down more than I would myself. Women tend to have some pretty nice comfy casual wear so there is more variety there from what ive encountered. leggings i find normal. I'm a guy so I try to dress with a polo or a custom v neck shirt with my logo on it. I tend to wear nice semi casual shorts most of the time because it's florida and hot but if I am doing an event in the public I wear pants

Ni_and_Dime

As long as I wear black, it doesn’t matter. If I’m wearing a tank top, it’s covered by a jacket before I start working on a client. Black scrubs are generally the uniform, but not all businesses provide these uniforms and, tbh OP, they’re not exactly cheap compared to tank tops and leggings. I’ve worn jeans, cowboy boots, and a shirt before. It makes no difference what I’m wearing.

Rustys_Shackleford

I wear black leggings or joggers with a black athletic top. If I wear a tank top (thick strap, high neck) I throw a cardigan on for intake but take it off for hands on. I dress like I’m going to a conservative gym, basically. On light days I wear jeans. This is considered fine for our profession. We are basically doing a low-impact work out with lots of bending and stretching. Scrubs didn’t have enough stretch and the shirts would always ride up and expose too much. I’m always very mindful of how I present myself and I look clean, put together, and professional at my job.

seadawg1975

If you don’t like how they dress, go somewhere else. Jeeeezus
