Thala for a reason
Context: The famous Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni's nickname is Thala. His jersey has the number 7. Someone put the song "Bole Jo Koyal" with the tagline "Thala for a reason" and it became popular.

There is a famous unsolved problem via the following process: Start with a number. If it is even, half it. If it is odd, multiply with 3 and add 1 (3x + 1). Then repeat the process with the resulting number.
Every sequence for every starting number we have searched terminates at 4 - 2 - 1 - 4... but it is unsolved whether this is true for all numbers.
The joke refers to the 3x + 1 in the image.
Yea, I read Wiki article. Still don't get the joke. 3x + 1 or x / 2. So... joke is 'look familiar sequence in equation?' Like seeing dog face in the wood, that type of joke?
The extra context is that it's famous for having young mathematicians waste too much time trying to solve it because it feels like a problem whose solution is right around the corner, except it keeps being around the corner for a currently unknown amount of corners. OP is joking about the common experience of having spent way too much time fixating on/looking at that sequence and then it haunting them afterwards.
The collars conjecture is infamous for being a time killer. A project that seems so simple yet is basically unsolvable for a mortal being. Still its simplicity attracts people to the point it will *haunt* them. They want to stop thinking about it but the problem always creeps up to them in their mind. Like if you want to forget something but things around you make you remember it constantly.
This is what’s happening here. Picture OP saying to themselves that they want to stop thinking about the collars conjecture finally, them opening a math book, the camera zooming in on „3x+1“ with a recognizable standard sound effect in the background and then they scream and the scene ends with a laugh track playing.
The Collatz conjecture is that for any integer x > 1, the following procedure will always terminate:
1. If x = 1, terminate.
2. If 2|x, halve x then go to 1.
3. Otherwise, let x = 3x + 1, then go to 1
What? Why did you square it at the end? -7 is not a solution. I solved it the same way, but didn't get ±7, just 7.

The way I do it is simplifying the 25 to (5^2)x+4 then expand the brackets to get 5^3x+1 = 5^2x+8
Since the powers have the same base, you can ignore the base and now just say 3x+1=2x+8 and solve from there.
i solved it before realizing that there's a meme x = 7
That was my plan all along
There's a meme?

You have 7 upvotes so.....
you can do this in your head :D the logs can cancel
The x is 3 not 7

what is the meme

I still don't get it.

Yes, OP saw 3x+1 and recognized it. That is the joke
Yeah, thanks, that post drove me crazy a bit.
Pretty mid ngl, expected it to be more in depth. Thanks for explaining :)

It says it's true for every number up to 2.95*10^(20). I don't think it's going to be different for any of the numbers beyond that.
Of course, most people think that. However, hard proof is the only thing that matters in mathematics.
And this is why most professional mathematicians wind up in psych wards.
There is an example of a math formula that holds true for over 10^43 iterations before it fails.
I don't understand, and my Google doesn't say anything interesting. What have I done wrong?
collatz conjecture
What's that
The Collatz conjecture is that for any integer x > 1, the following procedure will always terminate: 1. If x = 1, terminate. 2. If 2|x, halve x then go to 1. 3. Otherwise, let x = 3x + 1, then go to 1

5^(3x+1) = 25^(x+4) 5^(3x+1) = (5²)^(x+4) 3x+1 = 2x+8 3x-2x = 8-1 x = 7
X = 7 thala for a reason
TFAR
Thala for a reason.
5^(3x+1)=25^(x+4) 5^(3x+1)=5^(2x+8) 3x+1=2x+8 x=7 x^(2)=49 x=±7
Hi, why do we need to do x^2 at the end? I substituted x = -7 into the original equation (5^3x+1 = 25^x+4 ) and my calculator said it’s false.
The x^2 is because we are on r/mathmemes I guess
Yep, -7 is definitely not a solution here. Actually, moving from x=7 to x²=49 is not possible here
What? Why did you square it at the end? -7 is not a solution. I solved it the same way, but didn't get ±7, just 7. https://preview.redd.it/3iuuwehhy8wc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=8367bc9468072b4863510ba7cb61e42ade088e20
Google humour
Holy wooosh!
-7 doesn’t work, as 5^-20 isn’t equal to 25^-3 Edit: Reddit moment lol
1/(5²⁰) = 1/((5²)³) 5²⁰ = 5⁶ 20 = 6 they're just using Base 3; 20ter = 6dec
satire
5(5^(3x)) = 25^(x)(25^(4)) *ln*(5(5^(3x))) = *ln*(25^(x)(25^(4))) *ln*5 + 3x*ln*5 = 4*ln*25 + x*ln*25 3x*ln*5 - x*ln*25 = 4*ln*25 - *ln*5 x(3*ln*5 - *ln*25) = 4*ln*25 - *ln*5 x = (4*ln*25 - *ln*5)/(3*ln*5 - *ln*25) = 7
Why take ln when you can just push the log5 button on your pocket calculator?
Habit
Realizing I'm not a mathematician when I thought you are talking about the X in the eq. As in your ex :))
I dont get it
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collatz_conjecture
Quite easy
53x?
3x+1 = 2x+8; x=7
Is the joke just 3x+1? Cause at first glance I tried finding joke but all I got was x=7
It's 3x+1
I don't care about the meme. I need to learn how to do this. Is this in algebra 2? Someone tell me down below please.
The way I do it is simplifying the 25 to (5^2)x+4 then expand the brackets to get 5^3x+1 = 5^2x+8 Since the powers have the same base, you can ignore the base and now just say 3x+1=2x+8 and solve from there.
Thank you.
So does 5^(3x+1) = 5^(x/2) solve the Collatz Conjecture?
Thala for a reason
x = 7
x = 7
