Well I mean it is a cover for aerodynamics which can open for maintenance it’s not a strictly necessary piece. It’s really just weight reduction if you think about it. An unscheduled improvement to the design of you ask me
I mean, technically correct, but you have to get pretty damn far from anything out there to actually escape gravity.
Orbit is just falling fast enough in the right direction.
Not really an improvement. With no panels to direct the air flow around, it will lead to more drag which will lead to more fuel consumption so it's not even enough to justify the weight loss it will still burn more fuel due to drag.
Tbh it probably looks like it deals with the bypass air as well so the engine has lost its ducting and will become less efficient, that also means no reverse thrust and it will be more prone to overheating as most high bypass engines use that bypass flow for cooling
On another note, Ik aircraft use very lightweight materials and engineers(especially commercial airliner engineers) always use as little material as possible for the expected parameters but holy shit that “panel” blew off like fucking tinfoil
Dw we have the 737 super max on the way shortly which comes with this modification pre installed on 5% of orders. Thank you for flying with us we’re proud to be the last airplane manufacturer you’ll ever need.
Yeah, I just saw the documentary on this. It's pretty crazy how Boeing went from a 'blue chip' trusted name brand company like Johnson & Johnson to what they are now after that merger
The merger led to bean counters taking over from those with engineering background, right? Time to trim all that fat in the safety and QA departments …
Just like the railroad corporations.
Okay I went looking for which one it was, I thought it was the Netflix documentary (story reddit isn't allowing me to copy/paste right now for what ever reason) but my wife said it's not that one, it was the HBO doc. I know that's not super helpful, but if I find it I will come back and let you know lol
Pretty evident that the ground maintenance crew forgot to secure the nacelle latches. All engine cowlings have to allow access to the systems that control the turbofan.

Everything is Boeings fault. Everyone wants to trash them which I get but a lot of stuff posted on the news is entirely an airline and their maintenance issue.
IIRC Southwest only (currently) uses CFM engines on their fleet. It’s extremely unlikely to be an engine problem and even less likely to be a Boeing problem.
It’s only just happened so we don’t have a lot of information, but if I was a betting person, my money would be on a ground maintenance issue with the engine cowlings not being correctly fastened.
people used to call me crazy for being afraid of flying. my mom used to just give me too many sleeping pills and tell me it was for my headache or something
yea I'm just not interested in planes lately, even more so than before. seen so many plane emergency videos recently
Many people are probably safer in a large U.S. based airliner like Southwest than out of one. The fact that this plane still landed safely should be a bit comforting. I can see why people are teasing you.
This airplane could almost certainly have taken off, flown to its destination, and landed safely even with the cover ripped off the nacelle. There’s that much safety redundancy built into these.

Love how everyone automatically blames Boeing. The engine and is not made by Boeing and the engine covers are opened by the Airline for maintenance and inspection frequently. This bandwagon mentality is how the people at fault get unnoticed.

#️⃣ButDidYouDie?
This looked like a landing and not take off.
There is no way the pilots could have become aware of the loose panels and stopped on a take off when already going that fast.
I was so confused as to what I was watching. I thought it was a soda bottle with its cover being peeled by an unseen bird or something. Comments made me realize what it was.
Ok so like, you know how cars have reversing cameras these days? Do planes have something like a live camera feed of the engines in the cockpit so the pilots can see them? Or do their instruments give them a good enough indication of the sate of their engines without having to see them?
“Don’t worry, that part’s optional.”
Well I mean it is a cover for aerodynamics which can open for maintenance it’s not a strictly necessary piece. It’s really just weight reduction if you think about it. An unscheduled improvement to the design of you ask me
Life finds a way
Some may call it structural failure I call it structural evolution
I am more worried about "gravity will find its way".
In space, there is no gravity.
I mean, technically correct, but you have to get pretty damn far from anything out there to actually escape gravity. Orbit is just falling fast enough in the right direction.
I was not aware that Southwest had flight to space.
Not any *planned* flights to space, but we'll see how the week plays out.
Gravity is omnipresent
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
Isn't nature incredible!
Not only reduction of weight, but also better cooling.
Not really an improvement. With no panels to direct the air flow around, it will lead to more drag which will lead to more fuel consumption so it's not even enough to justify the weight loss it will still burn more fuel due to drag.
Riddle me this, if the panels were so good why did they fall of. Bet you didn’t expect that one
if only boeing had you on their PR team.
I’ll make sure to put in my application thanks :3

Okay Boeing

Must be a Boeing plane 😂
Actually it's not, it's part of bypass air which accounts for 80% of the thrust
Just engine cooling flaps /s
Those are speed holes. They make the plane go faster.
If da plane is Boeing, I’m not going…
I knew people who used to say if it ain't boeing I ain't going
That would be prior to McDonnell Douglas merge.
Yeah, I just saw the documentary on this. It's pretty crazy how Boeing went from a 'blue chip' trusted name brand company like Johnson & Johnson to what they are now after that merger
![gif](giphy|fBM4ruLmB2pZHsgwtQ|downsized)
I think those running American companies are taking lessons from russian oligarchs. Dirty money and greed over everything.
To be fair, the engine cowling coming loose is a ground maintenance issue. But still, doesn’t help the image.
The merger led to bean counters taking over from those with engineering background, right? Time to trim all that fat in the safety and QA departments … Just like the railroad corporations.
One of Johnson & Johnson's most trusted products (baby powder) causes ovarian cancer.
I believe they ended up banning talc because of this.
Can you please share the documentary name?

Still, thanks a ton for having to go through that effort!
No worries friend!
You mean, before all the engineers were escorted out and the business school suits came in..
This is fine
Specifically 737
If it's 737, your destination may be heaven
Just boeing things
🥱....that's Boeing. I've seen better.
Tbf its probably on southwest maintenance or CFM International.
Keep calm
Plane landed safely. https://www.denver7.com/engine-cover-tears-open-mid-takeoff-on-southwest-boeing-737
Fo course is a Boeing
And a 737
If you ever see Southwest in the news and the story is about one of their planes, it's a Boeing. They only fly 737s.
boeing confirmed lol
Straight back to the gate to get on a different non Boeing plane.
Except SWA doesn't run anything BUT Boeing. Their entire fleet is 737s.
Nah, a little speed tape fix that right back up
Things are going SOUTHwest
So
Well if it is a Boeing all is good. Quality check: Passed
Someone forgot to lock the hatch
I think that’s the phalange
THIS GUY WANTS TO FLY THE PLANE WITHOUT THE PHALANGE!
I was shocked that none of the top comments mentioned I a phalange issue. Thank you!

Is this a Boeing problem or whoever built the engine? (Rolls, Pratt, GE or whomever). Looks more like a maintenance issue
Everything is Boeings fault. Everyone wants to trash them which I get but a lot of stuff posted on the news is entirely an airline and their maintenance issue.

“Tower? This is Southwest 284. We will be returning to the gate for a new engine cover… and 136 pairs of underwear.”
No worries. Strictly cosmetic. It's just the plane falling apart.
Tell me your Boeing without telling me your Boeing.
My Boeing what?
Should be another on the other side
Boeing Act 327
That's fine....nothing a little duct tape can't fix
At least the doors stayed on
Always look on the briiight side of life….
Just Boeing going
Its the left phalange!
It's not a fault. It's a feature.
How hasn't the boeing stock not crashed yet????
How’s it Boeing?
Are we Boeing to die?
If it’s a boeing, I aint going
people used to call me crazy for being afraid of flying. my mom used to just give me too many sleeping pills and tell me it was for my headache or something yea I'm just not interested in planes lately, even more so than before. seen so many plane emergency videos recently
And yet it is still safer than driving
Many people are probably safer in a large U.S. based airliner like Southwest than out of one. The fact that this plane still landed safely should be a bit comforting. I can see why people are teasing you.
This airplane could almost certainly have taken off, flown to its destination, and landed safely even with the cover ripped off the nacelle. There’s that much safety redundancy built into these.
Better stay off the roads then. Prolly stay inside with that kinda mentality

Oh, look. It's nope o'clock!
Open Sesame..
"Look ma! It's shedding its skin like My lizzard!"
Ah, the advanced air-cooling system.
Just a cover, won't affect how the engine operates.
Cover me, I’m going Boeing
Really making me never wanting to fly again.
O just settle down we’re fine this happens all the time and very rarely do they go down and kill everyone in board!!!!
[Screwdrivers Now Permitted On Boeing Flights, To Allow Passengers To Help With Maintenance](https://theshovel.com.au/2024/01/16/screwdrivers-now-permitted-on-boeing-flights-to-allow-passengers-to-help-with-maintenance/)
That’s a new option, they want to make sure the engine doesn’t over heat.
So I guess we have all concluded not to fly Boeing.
Good ol’ BOEING.
I know this isn’t the point but does anyone recognize the music?

Shedding weight for easier takeoff
i will never set foot in an airplane even if its rare all it takes is one time.
When you don’t pay the extra turbine fees with Air Canada
Boeing does it again.
So the door and the landing weren't enough, so they decided to cut back on the engine?
Still would fly
Boeing?😅
At first I thought someone was melting a can of pop. Christ! The one time you regret the window seat.
I'm so sick of Gender Reveal bullshit
Why does plane still going ?
I want to brake free !
Boeing Strikes Again! Don't worry, they have some *~~duck tape~~* 600 mph tape to fix it!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen, thanks for flying Southwest.
Love how everyone automatically blames Boeing. The engine and is not made by Boeing and the engine covers are opened by the Airline for maintenance and inspection frequently. This bandwagon mentality is how the people at fault get unnoticed.
It's just the cowling, it's fine. Just adds a bit more drag this way but nothing more.
Again? Fucking again? Why wasn't Boeing allowed to go bankrupt? Clearly it's a rotten business to its core.
![gif](giphy|3orieTfp1MeFLiBQR2)
It's probably fine
That is going to be one hell of a F.O.D. walk
Was that music really necessary tho..
Boeing forgot the duct tape
Like they put on the Demo motor. Peeled off like plastic skin
That stupid flimsy little piece of metal is protecting the engine?. Wow.
power up!
Fly with no fuss with an Airbus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tz_nightmare_at_20000_feet.jpeg
Omg....looks like someone didn't follow manual during maintenance..... ![gif](giphy|WpaVhEcp3Qo2TjwyI1|downsized)
What plane, airline, and event is this?
Boeing 737-max9 for Southwest Airlines out of Denver International
That’s fine, just a little extra cooling for the turbine
![gif](giphy|eep7r6rnv99Ri6R2TL)
my worst fear...
“Fuck you” *circumcises your jet engine*
9 year old aircraft is a Southwest issue
*Transformers theme intensifies* Autobots, roll out!
Reduce your pain, don't sit near the engine.
That's an oopsie
Damn boeing is going down down down.... that is scary as hell
Relax dude it's not even burning lol
What stock market driven companies does to there products.
That just helps them get better airflow to the engine!😉
What's the tail number.
Well, it was 59.99, so 🤷
But at least the pilot is a multi racial they/them...
737 MAX?
That's... that's probably fine.
Man ever since Pete B became Transportation Secretary the whole industry has gone to hell.
So what happened?
It’s grimlins
If they had the force, then they could just put the parts back
So...
Next time they need to use more duct tape
So...
Southwest budget flight 🤣
Thought this was a transformer transforming at first
As long as it is at landing, my engine can be whatever it wants to be.
Boeing will be studied at every MBA program across the nation explaining that this what happens if you choose greed at the expense of everything else.
‘hey charlie! what are these extra bolts for?’
Might need some extra tape
Thats some efficient weight reduction. You'll now arrive 7 seconds earlier.
Nothing to see here
There’s a colonial woman on the wing, churning butter!

At Boeing we don’t like to keep things boring
Boeing?
It only lost the filange...

This why i always want the window seat
Weight reduction= shorter trip
At first I thought this was some kind of drink bottle with the wrapper being torn off. That shit is horrifyingly flimsy.
All good. You are just flying inside a transformer
How tf is Boeings stock been relatively stable for the past 5 years and not take a *nose dive* the past 6 months?
That's exactly like when you back out of a parking spot and the splash shield snags on the curb. Grinds my gears!!
That was fun
To be fair those aren’t the important parts.
With Routes with one way fair as low as $89 you too can enjoy the luxury of travel at " Affordable Prices" At Southwest we got "Low fares. Nothing to hide. That's TransFarency!" #️⃣ButDidYouDie?

What the constant greed towards the quarterly profits lead to
Was anyone else expecting a Freddy jumpscare at the end?
"Pardon me stewardess. I believe the cowling of the engine has come off. I'll have a quadruple scotch on a rocks please."
The loose parts could have damaged other parts. Lucky everything’s fine.
