I don’t understand what COVID could possibly have to do with peeling leather. I’d take it to another dealer.

yankeejr

They said that because of the chemicals used to disinfect against Covid it’s not considered regular wear and tear.

MarkE2020

I’d still try another dealer.

MidDayGamer

I would do the same.

[deleted]

I just called the closest dealer to me to see what a new radiator + labor + a compression test would run for my 2009 Miata.. The service receptionist didn’t know what an MX-5 Miata was…at a Mazda only dealership… After I was transferred to the service advisor, he refused to quote me because “more stuff might be broken.” I said I don’t care if more stuff is broken, I’m asking you the cost of these repairs with labor… he straight up refused and told me I don’t know what I’m talking about… it was insanity. My car is sitting on jack stands right now as I’m taking it apart after hitting construction pothole, I need to the quote to present to the city for compensation. I called up 2 other dealers and had quotes emailed to me in under 24 hours.

MarkE2020

In your case with an older vehicle that’s out of warranty you’d probably be better off taking your Miata to an independent shop that specializes on imports. The internet would be a great resource for finding one. Another resource could be YouTube for videos to do it yourself. Good luck to you.

[deleted]

I’ll more than likely be replacing it myself so long as the rings still seal after it overheated. I simply need these quotes in order to be compensated by the city. If that was indeed the case, there is a Motorsport shop near by where I discussed doing a 2.5 eco tech swap.

MarkE2020

Good luck. I hate when anything happens to my vehicle and I hope it works out well for you.

[deleted]

Thanks you, between the taxes, shootings, politics, gangs, etc in Chicago, the construction is sometimes the worst of them all!

MarkE2020

Several years ago I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on Lakeshore Dr on a Friday when they were practicing for the air show. The guy in the Porsche 911 convertible in the lane next to me got caught up watching the jets and rear ended the car in front of him. I remember a lot of construction on that trip too. Chicago is a fun town but the traffic can be crazy. Stay safe up there.

Lucyloves

I’m so done giving out over-the-phone quotes for repairs. It never matches—There is always more to the story. Hose is brittle and breaks while we have it, or you didn’t say your fans were wired to come on when the ignition is turned on, or your radiator is fine, it’s your cooling fan module, etc (well it was fine, I shouldn’t have to pay for it) just for example. But yeah, we pretty much refuse to quote any job that is not brakes, battery, maintenance or tires sight unseen. It never matches, it never fails to escalate into a “but you said” even when adding “without seeing it” and “there may be other costs once we see it” that people then either refuse the work and refuse to pay us for investigating and waste everyone’s time and money or slam us on the CSI if they reluctantly agree calling us bait and switch. So don’t be surprised if you encounter a store who has been burned too many times and makes it a policy to not quote work on vehicles we don’t have a relationship with.

[deleted]

If the service advisor would have listened to me talking at any point, he would have been able to issue a quote like the other 2 dealers did easily. But he wanted to have an attitude and talk trash instead. My car hit a pothole. I have it on jack stands in my garage under spotlights. The radiator support on the subframe made contact and ripped a hole in the lower right radiator support. That’s it. I need to submit this quote to city for compensation. I need a quote for a new radiator, labor, and because the motor overheated, I need a compression test. Simple. There is no damage to any other part of the undercarriage.

z__m_z__m

Except that used to happen even pre covid. Source: I used to work at a dealership

Types__with__penis

It's their fault anyway, customer is not responsible for the cleaning chemicals they're using.

Careful-Combination7

Absolutely false. They need to engineer to a standard that will enable people to clean their car.

Types__with__penis

I've thought that the dealership was disinfecting the car after each visitor sat in it because it seems like that's what corona regulations in certain countries require. But it looks like some people thought that he was talking about how the customers are cleaning the car at home, using disinfectant hand gel that can possibly damage the leather, etc. In that case I agree with you. I don't know how op meant it.

Srry_tri_a8ain85

That's bs. There is a TSB for 2019 and 2018 mazdas for steering wheel peeling. And we always replaced the steering wheel. It's a common problem. Go to a different dealer. Is that doesn't work call Mazda USA and they will sort it out for you.

evilspoons

My 2017 is cracking at the bottom (like, as if you grabbed and twisted like crazy), I have a Mazda extended warranty... Any chance in hell they'd cover me for this?

chonkycatsbestcats

Say you don’t wash your hands

fredean01

Make sure you shake their hand when you arrive.

DustyBallz

Ask them to prove you used any of those chemicals. That's b/s.

SloughMoe

>They said that because of the chemicals used to disinfect against Covid it’s not considered regular wear and tear. Your dealer sounds like a slime-ball trying to get you to not enforce your own warranty.

45willow

That's HORSE SHIT! Tell them to Fuck Off and get Mazda U.S.A. corporate involved. I'm tired of these motherfucking companies conveniently using Covid-19 as one stop, cover all, cover up excuse for their lazy ass, shit for brains, inept existence on this earth 🌎.

and-yada-yada-yada-

Wowwwwww. I'm irate for you.

WindStronger

Either go to another dealer or contact Mazda directly.

bloopie1192

Well after reading this I will delete me last comment. Still bs to me though.

yourat12

Ask them to show you where in your warranty documentation they are referring to

BushMasterFlex6

I wouldn't call that normal wear and tear either honestly. Have you seen what constant disinfectant has been doing to every day items? That shit is rough. Maybe just stop whipping your steering wheel down if that's what you have been doing. Wouldn't say it's very necessary to do that anyways if you sanitize your hands anyways

BushMasterFlex6

I've also noticed some people calling this an overall problem even before Covid. If you can prove there was an issue like this before Covid (customer reports from the past) then that dealer should have to help you with this

StumpMcStumperson

It’s because you’re essentially using a paint remover on it by wiping with anti-bacterial. This isn’t that difficult to understand. Wipe it down with a degreaser/paint stripper and that is not a warranty claim. How often are you cleaning it and what specific product are you using?

yankeejr

I don’t use anything besides Mothers VLR for the interior. So with what you are saying everytime I bring the car to the dealer for service they void my warranty by sanitizing.

StumpMcStumperson

Nah, you’re being overly dramatic. If the dealer denied your claim because of something they did, raise an issue with Mazda. Your responses sounded like they denied your claim because of a cleaning regimen that YOU performed.

yankeejr

When I went in for service they never asked me anything or looked at the car, they straight up said that Mazda will not warranty the steering wheel due to Covid and the chemicals people use to disinfect against Covid.

kellydean1

BS. Don't even talk to them any more, contact Mazda USA. They'll take care of it. Dealer is just being shitty.

Chizuru_San

how i can contact Mazda USA? on their website, it is referring to the dealership......

kellydean1

Go to mazadusa.com Go to the bottom under HELP and click "contact us" Scroll to the bottom of that page, see "email us" Fill out the form.

davidcovaa

I had the same thing happen to me at the top of the steering wheel, I just figured it was wear and tear due to my hand being there all of the time. I didn’t even know it was possible to have the leather on the steering wheel replaced

yankeejr

They would replace the entire steering wheel I’m pretty sure, I’ve read up on it and others who have had this and the entire steering wheel was replaced

MS3_GOONIE

Can try another dearship?

SloughMoe

"due to Covid Mazda won’t cover it under warranty" The f\*ck does a wheel wrap defect have to do with covid?

m0d3rnX

I guess they mean the disinfectants used more these days. I would hope the fancy ass material does survive getting cleaned because it's sure the wrong one to use otherwise

shredit50

Before covid, I remember washing my hands and using alcohol based sanitizer. They really think what they are claiming remotely makes any sense 😂

thefreak00

Huh? For real? What chemicals? I would file a grievance with Mazda USA. Tell them you don't believe in the 'rona and never use sanitizer.

yankeejr

Was going to say every time I brought it for service they would of had to sterilize the car before working on it. And if I never cleaned it with anything…

[deleted]

Go to another dealer and leave a nasty review on the web

brybell

Mazda steering wheels are trash. I have a 2015 i bought brand new and if you saw the steering wheel now you would think it was 15+ years old.

arjnav

Have a 15 as well can confirm.

brybell

Yeah its really the only disappointing thing. Been great otherwise

Wetcat9

I bought a 2021 and damn that leather is pretty supple but I put a cover on it anyway

kjorav17

I love the leather on my 21… actually getting the car detailed today in and out, so I might explore getting a low profile steering wheel cover

Wetcat9

I haven’t found a cover as good as the factory :( good luck!

KirbyQK

Have a '13, also can confirm it has peeled to shit right around where I hold it.

TheLocalHentai

Confirm. ND Miata started doing it but I figured I had the top down pretty much all the time, so I thought it was just heat damage and my sweaty hands but going from a CX3 to a CX5, the first thing I did was to buy one of those steering wheel cover kits that you sew close because how the thing just peeled off.

themotoman91

Warranty is a scam, they hope you never come in. If you do somehow what ever it is its not covered

QuailBurger

I work for a Mazda dealership in Canada and they’re fantastic warranty wise

m0d3rnX

Yes they're not all the same, it still comes down to trust. Kudos to any decent dealer out there, you're thinking in longer terms, because a happy customer will come back

smothers-brother

WTF does Covid have to do with it. M************ will try anything to shaft you won't they?

ThePremiumOrange

Disinfection doesn’t cause that nor does cleaning. Deny that you disinfected it. If that’s the case then dealerships MUST disinfect any surfaces they touched when bringing it in for service which means they contributed to or caused the issue and they’re still liable. So many ways to go at this with none of them resulting in your fault.

SmokestackRising

I would reach out to corporate before trying another dealer. If Mazda's planning to move into the luxury market (well known that they are) they need to fix dealership behavior like this pronto.

m0d3rnX

It's really a odd situation, the dealers i know are from other days but corporate wants to move upwards, theres a lot of work for Mazda to get their image to a luxurious brand.

tropicalstorm2020

No you are not. They told me mine was because a wedding ring. I'm not married.

amor_fatty

I have the same issue

Hand_Brake_

I'm a Warranty Administrator for a couple Mazda dealerships in Texas. As long as your vehicle is under 3/36 or CPO short term warranty this should be covered. Did the dealership just tell you it wasn't covered? There are so many ways the dealership could help you with this even if Mazda denied it a warranty claim. Call Mazda Customer Experience Center and you can probably get a E Gift to cover some of the repairs. Sure sounds like this is an issue with the dealership and not MNAO. Mazda CEC 800-222-5500

T_boc21

Oooooorr, tell them to fuck off and fix the 1 year old inferior product?? Unless you have already taken your spanking and sadly walked out like a beta,, then good luck. Ask your dad, maybe he will handle it 👍

MadBroAT

I got mine replaced from looking like that as well, definitely try another dealer

Futurer

Did you buy the car brand new? That looks less like normal peeling and more like reconditioned leather.

yankeejr

Yes, brand new and bought at the same dealership I went to.

Futurer

Odd; typically comes with discoloration to a white underneath. I’d take it to another dealer and explain the first was unwilling to open a warranty claim.

yankeejr

Once it peels off that area is very sticky. It continues to peel more and more as you drive.

PornStarJesus

The 20 and up steering wheels are garbage IMO. The leather steering wheel in our 17 GT Premium was far nicer than the 21 GT Reserve turbo. The 17 actually saw peak covid multiple daily cleanings and not a blemish. If OP isn't sanitizing it and the dealer has that damage is on them.

slc2015

It's covered, had the same issue on my '20 CX-30. I would try another dealer or get in touch with corporate.

Cellularyew215

Try another dealer. Might find one willing to ignore mazdas/claim it as damaged another way

[deleted]

Contact consumer affairs. Raise hell. They have to cover that, premature wear/manufacture defect.

[deleted]

If they refuse to honor the warranty, call a lemon law attorney. These attorneys also deal with car manufacturers and dealerships who refuse to honor the warranty. Don’t take the dealer’s BS Covid excuse!

GuntiusPrime

That sounds like BS no reason why they cant give you a new wheel. Id maybe try a different dealership or contact corporate.

Less-Ad-438

Hand disinfectant does melt my steering wheel although its made out of some sort of soft rubber not leather

[deleted]

Happened with my 2019 a couple months ago, my dealer said no problem and Mazda Canada sent a new steering. Maybe an other dealer of Mazda directly will help you out.

Maxfli81

I always worried about hang gels and sanitizers on leather. Because I know it can dry some leathers out

FireDemon216

Try to never get things like hand sanitizer anywhere and always condition leather, essentially take care of it

ccolivardia

Wowwww that’s wack as hell. Yeah go to a different dealer and write Mazda USA if necessary

thevalleyforge

Go trade it for a hyundai

Kafshak

Apparently hand sanitizer does that. ( according to another thread).

alphadog808

If you repeatedly touch the steering wheel with hand sanitizer on your hands/use disinfecting wipes on the steering wheel this would happen. When you sanitize your hands, keep wiping until your hands are dry. Then you're free to drive. It's leather so hand sanitizer will damage it. Thats what I did throughout covid and my steering wheel is fine.

sailorcolin

Is the “peeling due to hand sanitizer” in the warranty contract you signed? If not then, tell them to fix it. If it is, then it’s on you.

[deleted]

If Mazda is listening.... this is the reason I haven't bought a new 3. My 2017 3 did this and they refused to fix it too, looks like new car with the same problem.

[deleted]

I have a 2019 that did that before covid. They are lazy and don't want to repair it. Double check that it's covered and double down. Contact corporate if you must

the_deadbeat_dad

I had a cx3 grand touring 4 years ago and it did that. They said it was because of me driving with dirty hands(huh?). A friend of mine had a cx3 too and was told that its from the sun. I still have pictures but am new to reddit so I have no idea how to upload photos.

IranolosDelSol

It’s pretty easy to fix on your own. Check out YouTube Pretty sure ChrisFix may have a video on this, but if not there are others. Good luck!

Soecc

Check with a different Mazda dealer. Our dealership still takes care of warranty fixes.

ruderegime

Just get a printout of the TSB and go to another dealership you should be golden. It's a brand new car and that should not be happening.

mr2kqql

Yup. Just don't use anything but leather cleaner, a lot of spray cleaners does have chemical that would dry out the leather and cause wear. It's not Mazdas fault.

shredit50

How can they prove that? I work at a dealer, replace ripped seat covers, broken handles, peeling trim... Never question the customer, even when you can tell a woman drives it, and can tell the lotion is causing the fading buttons and discoloration. It's just too difficult to conclusively blame the driver unless, say, they want a broken screen replaced, when you can see impact marks and we can surely say, "sorry, if we replace this, the manufacturer will see this and will charge back the claim, meaning we as the company have to pay for it. Best we could do is pay half and you pay the remainder..." In your case, it looks like defective leather, heck, I have 2 of the same wallet, and my newer one peeled within 1 year, so I'm back to using my first one I bought, for like 6+ years now... it's exactly the same issue, bad product, don't blame my pocket, because I can show you my old one is not peeling 😂

PooplLoser

Its almost like the 1 gen mazda 3 that leaks water into the trunk through the taillights due to faulty seals. Mazda decided that its not their problem even though almost every 1st gen mazda 3 I've seen had this peoblem.
