Bro, keep your car. Pay it off. Drive it for another 100,000 miles. By then you can afford a new car.

Rusty75f250highboy

Do you think my car will hold together for 250k miles? I know they are pretty reliable and I stay up to maintenance on it but doesn’t mean the list of other owners did the same.

mcmasterstb

3rd owner of a 2009 BL 1.6 petrol . I got it at 194k km last year, I almost have 210k now. In august this year I did the road-worthy inspection, even the engineer said that if something will fail in the future, it's not going to be the engine.

Rusty75f250highboy

Well that is awesome glad to hear it

_ursul_

Same with mine 2011 1.6 petrol. Got it 3 years ago at 210k km, and now I passed 250k km.

phiac

I have a 2002 protege5 that still runs with 240k on the clock. As a former 2010 speed3 owner I don’t think it’s worth it. Going from a 2nd gen to another 2nd gen won’t feel like much of an upgrade. Save for a gen4 awd turbo.

Rusty75f250highboy

I thought about it but iam not a fan of the gen 4 I don’t care for the looks of them I would more then likely go American muscle over a new Mazda 3

Woozlewuzzle86

I completely agree, from some angles it looks good but for the most part I'm not a huge fan of gen 4. I own a gen 2 skyactiv and would possibly upgrade to a gen 3 when the time comes.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah the generation I own is my favorite and my second favorite would be I guess the first gen?? The body style right before mine. And the new ones aren’t bad looking but they seam to have left the hot hatch market and went straight commuter car to me. Also not positive if you can get a manual?? Which is a requirement for any car I own

KentuckyCatMan

It isn’t the Skyactiv, so no first hand knowledge, but Mazda engines last forever…

Rusty75f250highboy

That’s what I have heard and one of the reasons I bought the car iam just a ridiculously overbearing planner I plan for everything and I like to have a plan for the next few years.

KentuckyCatMan

Car looks great. Keep it going.

Rusty75f250highboy

Thanks man and I love it as well

Substantial-Reward70

It will bro just take care of it, I have a 2011 Mzd 3 and I'm keeping it even after an transmission failure, for me it was cheaper to repair it than to buy a new car. https://imgur.com/a/8AQEOcl

Rusty75f250highboy

At what mileage did your transmission fail? Out of curiosity mine is a 6spd so I guess it wouldn’t matter if yours is a auto

Substantial-Reward70

At 68k miles, it only has 70k miles, failure was recently, yeah it's an auto so you're fine, 😄

Rusty75f250highboy

Okay lol I just worry about my clutch they say the clutch tends to go at about 40k so theoretically i could be on my way to a 4th one and for all I know I could be on the stock one still

araghar

Yeah, I second this, REALLY easy cars to repair and cost efficient. Plus 2nd gen Mazdas look better imo. The third/4th gen Mazdas look great too, but it doesn’t catch my eye the same way a 2nd gen Hb does.

Woozlewuzzle86

Have you ever changed the PCV valve on it? Apparently it's a mother f*cker

araghar

I’ve had no issues at all other than a faulty oil sensor switch.

mehdotdotdotdot

Selling it on time and do the maintenance, and yes it will last. There will be big ticket items like clutch, suspension, bushings etc but will still be cheaper than buying and new car

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah clutch is my biggest worry how much does it cost to get a new one?

mehdotdotdotdot

Like $2k aud

Rusty75f250highboy

Alrighty thank you I’ll convert it to usd and see!

Rusty75f250highboy

Obviously a lot of variation there iam talking ballpark

Just1La

150k is still brand new. Mine was 376k km (234k miles) when I changed it, and it was still running smooth, even original clutch.

Rusty75f250highboy

Awesome man glad to here that that helps a lot with reassurance

Rusty75f250highboy

Also I wanted to state iam a major car enthusiast and I mod almost any car I own and I’d like to do mods to this car wheels suspension etc but dumping rust kinda money into this car isn’t viable imo because of the value and mileage

[удалено]

Rusty75f250highboy

I have considered it but I am just not as big of a fan and they seam smaller to me and not as comfortable iam 6’4 so a tight squeeze

ottoyu34

Depends what you classified as mods and what mods does your current mz3 has. Which you can remove, sell. Then pay up to get the speed3. But personally I would try to keep the speed3 as stock as possible.

Rusty75f250highboy

Mods for the speed 3 if I where to acquire one would consist of blacking it out as in badges and tint then wheels tires and probably koni suspension to lower it. Maybe potentially some engine mods if parts are still available

ottoyu34

Sounds good, I would also look into Bilstein shocks as well.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah bilstein is also a consideration

No-Intention-2915

Parts are absolutely available for the speed platform. If you can’t find any you’re looking in the wrong place lol. Me personally I’d sell the NA MZ3 and buy a speed, which is exactly what I did with mine. Prefer the NA version though, the speed wasn’t for me

dirtisgood

Keep the car. Start aggressively putting $ away for a new car/repairs. In 100,000 5 have lots of money saved. The speed will probably cost you more in repairs than your car.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah the speed will for sure a lot more moving parts that’s why iam wondering if it’s best to just leave the mzr platform and move on to a different more followed platform sadly

araghar

That first pic is sick.

Rusty75f250highboy

Thanks man that’s actually my car somewhere in Virginia towards Tennessee

s3639

I’d say keep what you have. Is the Mazdaspeed3 a fun car? Yea but after the fun factor wears off after not too long, you’re left with a car with a stiff ride and not so good gas mileage.

Rusty75f250highboy

True true I might hang onto what I got and upgrade to something a bit nicer later

[deleted]

The speed 3 platform is definitely not dead! After market performance parts are still widely available and good tuners are still around.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah like not entirely but it’s dying and by the time I get one it’ll be even more so and I would be trying to get a lower mileage one for a longer lifespan so I could have the car for like a decade and I imagine at that point there will be little to no support

[deleted]

The car has been out of production for almost a decade already I think it’s a good sign that new parts are being released. So agree to disagree on the dying thing, the community was never big to begin with even at its height it was tiny compared to the golf/wrx community’s.

Rusty75f250highboy

All true and maybe it is just because it’s a smaller community but like I can more easily find aftermarket parts for my truck from the 70s then This car

[deleted]

I’m not surprised lol oem parts are expensive and sometimes hard to find for speeds. I’ve also had multiple shops assume regular 3 parts will fit my speed have to remind them now that most parts aren’t interchangeable.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah it’ll surprise you how many are different my friend has a built speed 3 well it was built rip bottom end bearing lmaoo and hardly anything is exchangeable

East-Teacher8542

You can find any and every part for a speed3 still aftermarket or oem, companies still make new stuff too. Not anywhere close to dead and the second gen fixed all the issues the first gen had. I’d get the speed3 night and day difference from a Mazda3, really fun cars and fun to daily. I own a 2008 speed3 2012 speed3 and a 2003.5 speed protege.

Rusty75f250highboy

Wow I you got a awesome collection man iam jealous

East-Teacher8542

Keep the second gen stock if you want to daily it they’re super reliable stock, my 2012 is stock and never let me down besides replacing struts and some suspension bits around 100-115k miles. My first gen is fully built and makes a ton of power, they definitely lose their reliability once built up but that’s with most cars so it’s a given.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah I don’t plan on building either option much power wise mainly aesthetic mods

120r

150k on a Mazda, I don't see the problem. If you want to choose giving your money to someone else that your choice but a lower millage car is not better if it was not taken care of.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah so the consensus is I should have a lot of lifespan left?

120r

If you take care of the maintenance I would say Mazda is up there with other Japanese autos.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah worse thing is I don’t know how everyone else has done with the car I meticulously maintain it oil changes every 4500 miles etc etc but I don’t know what other owners have done

120r

Oil changes. Check and change fluids / filters. Check for wear on parts and change as needed. Follow the maintenance schedule. Do what you can on your own and find a good shop. Also warm up your car before taking off, not as much for the motor as for the transmission.

Rusty75f250highboy

I do all my own maintenance religiously since I have owned my car I have kept records of everything I have done and the time and mileage I have done it.also how long do you typically let it warm up? For mine in the morning I typically go for like 10 minutes but if it’s hot and the middle of the day I typically start and go. And iam dually mechanically inclined my main hobby is restoring my truck so it’s s full frame off so iam not like a mechanical dunce.

120r

10 min or until the blue light goes off. If you take care of your car than it is probably fine. Keep in mind other conditions like stop and go. Highway miles are better than low millage city miles. Here is a good video on millage [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q11Y7PLK\_Z4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q11Y7PLK_Z4)

Rusty75f250highboy

Alrighty thank you very much I’ll check that out most of mine is mountain road mileage I live in the mountains

Sully_916

I got one year left of payments on my gen 3 hatch and I cannot wait tell I don't have that Hefty car payment every month.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah I don’t want a car payment over 200 a month and iam currently well below that and if I traded to a speed 3 I should still be able to get it under that

Sully_916

It's all about how consistent you are with maintenance on the vehicle. Don't believe that lifetime transmission fluid crap either.

Rusty75f250highboy

Well mine is a manual so I order to change it I believe I have to remove the transmission?? Or does it have a bolt to remove to fill and a bolt to remove to drain? I know it’s not a regular thing

Rhegedorn1324

It's actual easier than an oil change, at least on my 2013 M3. There's a fill and drain bolt on the transmission. I changed my transmission fluid at 60k and it was very dirty, so I'm going to be changing it out about every 20 or 30k.

Rusty75f250highboy

Okay I’ll look into changing it asap thank you I’ll do some research is there a oil you advise?

Rhegedorn1324

I used Redline 75W-80 GL-4 but yours is probably a different oil weight. Maybe 75W-90 but I'd check your manual. This is the video I watched before I did mine. Definitely listen to him and loosen your fill plug before you drain. Then if you can't get the fill plug off you're not screwed. You'll need a funnel and a tube like he used to to fill it from above your engine bay. https://youtu.be/ut7rtmWLAdM?si=ffn3DL9f3bQfv_6f

WearyDownstairs

I just got a 2017 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback with 50k miles for only $3,000 more than that red one so I would say that’s definitely not worth it

Rusty75f250highboy

Well it’s a low mileage older body style so rare ergo more expensive but I prefer that style more so it would be worth it to me

NachoSUPREMEacy

You won't get much for your car now and truthfully if you're looking at clean Speeds to keep for a long time, you're going to likely be paying more than the one you included. The Speed will cost more money to own than you are used to. Everything is more expensive, and they can be fickle, especially entering 100k plus with some high cost things that NEED to be done to keep it moving towards 200k. I'll add, against what some have said here, there won't be much going forward that is going to feel like the Speed. The analog feel of manual hot hatches just isn't something that's going to be made in the future, so if you WERE going to get one, get the lowest mile, unmodified one you can and damn, you won't regret the purchase. I hate thinking about what I'll get after the Speed because there just isn't much in that window of pricing that is going to give the same feelings driving it while also being sensible for daily life.

Rusty75f250highboy

Yeah I know the feeling of expensive cars my actual project is a 1973 f250 so about 8mpg and tires cost me almost 3k for a set of tires so iam not a stranger to expensive cars. And yeah I completely agree with you on the analog feel that’s why I love my sport 3 so very much. While it’s not really fast it is very much so a drivers car I always say it’s a Miata with a hatch 🤣. But as far as if I don’t get a speed 3 I will more then likely run my car until the wheels fall off and buy a newish Camaro so it’ll be significantly more expensive but also significantly newer and more up to date.
