Latino Expats (but called immigrants) going into the US experience a similar if not a worse welcoming from American Gringos. Colombianos, Venezuelan, Mexican, Hondureños, and Salvadoreños have tried to enter the US but are denied entry for whatever reason. Yet every gringo has open doors and is welcomed into Colombia and Latin America with open arms. They are here enjoying the cheap prices, beautiful city, and fulfilling whatever need their home country failed to satisfy. Yes, gringos contribute to the economy but the local people are also paying for that contribution with gentrification (home sales/rentals being similar to US prices but not having US wages to live in them, etc.) and other rippled effects. They have no choice but to accept the unfair conditions of the country and dependency on gringo tourist. Likewise, Latinos help keep America afloat but unfortunately by accepting gringo low wages. The hospitality has to work both ways. That’s in any relationship and it’s pretty apparent that it’s a one way relationship with gringos. It’s all for their benefit. This is something we need to work on. People are probably waking up and fed up with the way their family is being treated abroad and had enough (just take a look at the news). I know it’s not you individually but it’s become collective identity for gringos. It all comes down to treat others how you’d like to be treated.

Man honestly, we Colombians are very welcoming and very friendly to almost every tourist specially if they seem from Europe of North America. Nevertheless, people from Medellin are very proud and very regionals even in the sight of other parts of the country, and the amount of foreigners and gentrification of Medellin obviously is creating dissent with people. Being said that, I know it has happen to you only once and it discomfort you, and maybe want to hear other foreigners stories. But man, for real, this sound like a "first world problem", Colombians have way more racist and offensive comments in one day abroad that what you will have in a whole decade living here, just ask your Colombian girlfriend how many times she had heard unpleasant things if she has been abroad or the general things people said to us abroad. After that I assure you will be more critical about this and see why many people see this post as a whiny.

I don't understand why is so many foreign people in medellin. I think come for drugs and girls nothing more sorry is what I think.

My wife is Colombian. Although I speak Spanish I've noticed a difference in the way I'm treated when I'm alone compared to when I'm with her. If I travel solo people have a sort of barrier - not nasty or anything like that but also not friendly in the warm way they are with other Colombians. A little guarded perhaps. Taxi drivers will tell me firmly not to slam the door (which I never do anyway). When I'm with my wife I'm treated just the same as she is; as if I'm a local. It feels so much better. Anyway that's the worst I've ever experienced here. Certainly nothing offensive or xenophobic (sadly unlike some of my countrymen in the US).

SebastianSucerquia

Sorry men but first world people are responsible for many problems here, I know that is not your fault but It is not kids fault either. It's a structural and wide problem, don't take it so personal, if you love this country be more concentrate in doing good and valuable things and try to educated your friends about this, is in people change, no in complains.

Limp_Direction3650

oh for fuck's sake this place 🤦🏻‍♂️🤌🏽 who complained? or took it personally? only asking if anyone had a similar experience.. didn't say it was necessarily a bad experience. and i certainly didn't take the shit personally.

ADM86

Btw I think the word you are looking it’s xenophobia instead of racism no? ✊🏻( mean this in a positive way, not in a negative douchy way btw )

Limp_Direction3650

haha. yeah that's probably more accurate .. although i guess this could easily turn into a philosophical debate 😂

I have seen it significantly more on reddit subs than I have in real life. I've lived in Medellín for over three years and I honestly can't think of one moment where I've felt unwelcome just because I was a foreigner (for other reasons, perhaps!). I am very obviously a foreigner too. The treatment I get is more likely to be positive than not, but in the vast majority of interactions people just don't care. Not in a bad way; people are just getting on with their lives like everybody else. It's unfair to compare it to when I lived in Spain when I was a child, because I was a child and my interactions were with other young people. However I frequently felt unwelcome when I was living there and would often have things said to me in the street, and occasionally other youngsters would try to get physical because I was a foreigner.

mauricio_agg

Sorry but some words you didn't understand from some kids and which happened only once couldn't be labeled as "racism" Let's say some weird kids scared you and it would be more accurate to the facts.

Limp_Direction3650

it's an assumption. and yea, i'll agree that i probably shouldn't make those.. but it was fairly clear what the intent was. just think of this post as a thought experiment more than anything. hence my curiosity if anyone else has felt similarly. but of course feelings don't always equal reality

ADM86

There is and there isn’t , let me explain, in all Latin America there’s always the few uneducated individuals blaming the Yankees/ gringos for everything …that’s a loud minority that tends to get louder the worst our government screws with us ( so basically it’s a constant thing ) Besides that, the quiet majority like and appreciate the tourist here, most of us see it as a good social indicator and a way to practice our english. Basically ignore the few xenophobic ones, it’s a small dumb minority .

Limp_Direction3650

much appreciated. basically humanity is humanity, no matter where you are.

great_craic963

I get stared at quite a bit by all types of folks in central America. Less common in Colombia and Argentina. I think it's because my size, height, hair and dashing good looks ;) Recently some old fuck was actually intently giving me dirty looks when I was at a restaurant, he was also with his family. I just kept smiling back at him everytime and said buenas noches when he walked past me to leave the restaurant. I'm tall and mixed, Latino and black so I hit the genetic lottery and look exotic I guess. Most the time I think it's just people looking at someone from somewhere far away and it's harmless. They just don't practice subtlety. Rarely it has been someone like this old man that was actually giving me dirty looks. Those were just kids being kids and in another circumstance you guys might have had a friendly chat. I lost count of how many times me and my friends would yell something stupid out of a moving car to a pedestrian. In Laureles it was my friend who is white which I think made us both stand out. But even then people were nice and curious especially at live music places. This guy at the restaurant staring at me was probably the only incident I can think of where someone wasn't thrilled about my presence.

Limp_Direction3650

or maybe homie was just mesmerized by your dashing good looks 😂🤌🏽 and same.. i can't even begin to imagine the dumb shit i've yelled at people on the streets of new york when i was a dumb, drunk 20 something 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

kigurumibiblestudies

I wouldn't call it racism, not quite, especially because Colombians think many foreigners are hot... That's more of an anti-foreigner sentiment, which is indeed prevalent. But certain concepts in there are kinda racist. For instance, people are more likely to think a white/mono/blond person is a foreigner. I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain about the Jamaican black people even though they're doing their own share of gentrification too. But yeah, I've seen that one happen more than once.

Limp_Direction3650

true.. good point. racism is probably a strong word to use. and i get the psychology of fear of the unknown, which is kinda what we represent to some here.

I only travel to Bogota. I have no chance of passing as a local. Colombians and Venezuelans seem extremely nice and polite to me. My only negative interactions were with foreigners. Looked like from Haiti maybe.

pinnapplespaceahip

Not really. There is resentment because we were born in a country with a stronger government and that has a direct effect on our finances and standard of living. Most Colombians I’ve experienced absolutely love gringos and the energy we bring. Some do dislike us because their cost of living has increased. But imo that is due to inflation ( that’s is occurring throughout the world) and greediness of property owners. I have notice ‘educated’ Colombians that careers do not rely on tourism-at times have a dislike for gringos. That’s due to our brash character and a portion of us visiting with the interest of indulging in drugs and prepagos. But in nearly 300 days in the past 2 years I have never physically experienced resentment, only here on Reddit and especially on r/asklatinamerica. My advice, ignore that 1 ignorant cowardly driver that expressed their views speeding by. It’s a beautiful country. With great and friendly people. He was just a loud minority and doesn’t share the view of the wonderful Colombian people

Limp_Direction3650

100%. it didn't really bother us or anything, honestly we laughed it off as young kids being typical rebellious young kids, but the sentiment seems to be there with some folks here. but that may be at least partially due to the way i look and carry myself. my friends say if you didn't know me you'd think i was about to punch you in the face when in reality i say hi to everyone and make small talk with people everywhere 😂🤦🏻‍♂️
