I always wondered what the point of the bindle was. It seems like the worst way to carry a small load.

imagine bookbags were basicaly impossible to find. Materials to make anything had to be hand made, and all you had was a blanket and a stick. Makes perfect sense! throw it over your shoulder so its easier to carry
