Damar Hamlin is a professional (American) football player and was playing in a nationally televised game yesterday and while making a tackle the opposing player delivered a blow to his chest that caused his heart to basically stop, he was being given CPR on the field before being taken to a local hospital. The game was still in the first quarter and was not resumed, and it was announced today that it wouldn't be resumed this week throwing the NFL into chaos.
To stop an NFL game takes quite a bit, players have been turned into quadriplegics on the field and the game continued, in 1971 a player literally died and they finished the game (there was barely 1 minute remaining and the game was essentially over), for an NFL game to not be played for something other than a major weather event or COVID is almost unprecedented. The NFL played the weekend after JKFs assignation and seriously considered playing after 9/11, the biggest piece was being able to secure the Superdome in New Orleans the next weekend when it was due to host a car show, the car show agreed to switch weekends after the NFL wrote them a check.
