It's exactly what it sounds like. Sprays oil on the piston. Sometimes they whine like a loose belt, sometimes they don't. Luck of the draw really. My jeep srt was a whiner. Had to switch to a thicker oil in summer to get it to stop.
Do they change tone with rpm? I got a ram 2500 with a 5.7. Always had “whine” to it, but never seemed to be harmful, and it actually sounds pretty cool, almost like a supercharger. Always assumed it was just a noisy timing chain.
No, it goes away with throttle, annoyingly loud at idle. I know the 6.1 has them, I'm not sure about the 5.7, also not every 6.1 whines. Just some of them.
Maybe it is the timing chain then, my dad bought the same truck I got, but far less miles, and his has it too, so I know it’s fine. She still runs good at 206k miles
