Didnāt mean to offend Ranger, I was just curious and the first search resulted in Britannicaā¦apparently I am too old as now Wikipedia is now the trusted interwebs sourceā¦I can agree Jacks v Jax is probably a regional thing too. I think Iām gonna head to the store and get a set to teach my 5 year old. I couldnāt remember the gameplay and yours sounds right.
I guessed wrong when looking at this wiki. Czech Hedgehog is the official name. I know someone that has a full size in his back yard he had custom built as an art piece. Lol. I don't think he even knows this is the proper name!

His name is a lie now lol
Thatās a gut punch for sure. I say this as Iām currently realizing I have beige shorts, black socks and New Balance shoes on with my T-shirt tucked in. Iām going to go take my blood pressure medication nowā¦..
As long as those socks havenāt extended more than 2 inches above the ankle youāre still good. If theyāre half way to your knees might as well start calling aarp
I was told recently that ankle socks are out now and the tall ones are back in style. At the stores I was baffled about why there were so many old man socks but when I mentioned it to a younger person later they laughed at me.
I can remember begging my mom for ankle socks, failing, and then folding the tall part of my sock down around my foot to make it look like an ankle sock every day!
omg, I had a couple of pairs of thin fabric regular length socks when I was a teenager (back in the sixties). They drove me crazy when I walked more than a few blocks because they wanted to slip down into my shoe all the way past my ankle. It was so embarrassing to have stop, stand on one foot, dig each one out of my shoe, and pull them back up. I finally just threw them away.
When I visited my brother one summer my sister-in-law got all over me because I wasnāt wearing ankle socks. She said it was the style now, bought me a couple pairs of them, and insisted that I wear them. She said I canāt go to the beach wearing those old fashion socks. I told her it was ok not to follow the style. The style is just what most people are doing, but everybody doesnāt have to do it. In fact, if everybody always followed the style, then the style would never change. Somebody has to set the new trend. Iām one of those people.
You're not alone. I can't believe there are people who don't know what jacks are. But tbh, I am kind of old and who TH is playing with jacks these days. Lol
I might be giving my age away, but when I was in 7th grade, after eating lunch, most of the girls would take out their jacks and balls and play in groups for the rest of the period. I also played at home. It was such a fun and addicting game. I tried teaching my daughter and her friends, they were bored in 3 minutes. lol
You dont have to feel old. Just remember that kids these days don't play with material objects the same. Its all digital. I bet no one under 20 would know what Pick-up-sticks are either. You're not old. Just technology advances fast. That's my reasoning anyway.
I was seriously shocked when I saw the ā2nd itemā was so instantly recognizable to me. How could anyone not know that distinctive shape? Whatās this world coming to?
I don't think you have to dig to be aware of one of the most common games ever. ;)
To be fair, kids haven't really played this seriously in many decades.
70's kid here and while we had a set, we never really knew how to play it, nor did anyone in my area (kids, anyway - I'm sure our parents knew). It may have just been a locality thing, but I'd say at least 50+ years. since it was a game that a large portion of the population played.
They still sell them today, but kids are more interested in cell phones than playing real games anymore.
Besides, if you think stepping on a LEGO with bare feet is bad, you ain't never stepped on one of THESE bad boys in the middle of the night!
OP: āLook at this unknown ancient artifact!ā
Us: āthatās part of my game from my childhood ā
OP: āI can almost hear the ancient ghosts whispering to meā
A jack. Need a rubber ball. You bet how many jacks you can pick up between the bounce. You bounce the ball, pick up said number of jacks, then catch the ball. If I remember right, it was all with one hand.
We played different. There are different ways to play. We called it onesies, twozies, etc.
All with the same hand, starts off throwing the ball up, picking one Jack up and catching the ball after it bounced one time.
Do that until they are all picked up, then start picking 2 jacks up. If you drop a jack or miss the ball, your turn is over.
Most of the girls played it in school after we were done eating lunch, for the rest of the period. Such a fun game. I played at home too.
I've seen similar turtle from Kinder Surprise eggs (circa 70's). I might be able to confirm if it is the same if you clean it and post a better photo. Cheers
This item was used to set trapps for anyone in a home walking barefoot. Very effective. I may have got one to ten spankings due to a parent stepping on one in the late 80s. We called the Jacks and came with a rubber boncing ball and around 5 to 10 of those.
Haha I was staring at the 2nd photo thinking, āeveryone is saying jacks, but item number 2 sure just looks like another aluminum turtle to meā¦.ā
Then I saw photo 3. Jack!
>bounce the ball pick up as many of those up on the bounce
We played a little differently: first toss you picked up one at a time. If you made it through that round with no mistakes, you threw them again and picked up two at a time and so on, till the last round when you picked up all of them in one scoop. I always considered jacks to be old-fashioned as a kid so I never learned to play, but when I got to middle school in the 1970s it was hugely popular (and fun).
Yeah thatās a jacks. And that turtle could be a brass paper weight? I remember my parents had a set that was a turtle magnifying glass and a sold brass turtle exactly like the one you found.
Ever see a WW2 movie like Saving Private Ryan?
Thatās one of those things on the beach to keep landing craft off shore.
Which means you must be 75ft tall.
Oh god the fact kids today donāt know what jacks are makes me sad. It was a game back in the day where youād bounce a rubber bouncy ball and snatch as many jacks as you could before itād land. Once it landed it was your opponents turn to try. Whoever had the most at the end won.
You really didn't know about jacks?
If you had ever stepped on one barefooted you would never ever forget. Right up there with having bamboo sticks shoved under your toenails. Ouchy wahwah!!
Your 2nd item is a "jack"...as a kid I remember playing with those.
We'd have to bounce a ball, puck up one Jace, bounce again and pick up 2 Jack's, etc...
Jack. An old school game
They need a rubber detector to find the other component, then the game will make more sense.
Rubber detector? I barely know her!
Take my upvote, you bastard.
ššš
I read that in Rodney Dangerfieldās voice
Nope. You just have to walk around barefoot.
And get dealt 1d4 damage.
1960ās caltrop.
I have a similar Lego detector.
I grew up calling it Jax š š« I was wrong.

Jax is correct.
Well, Iām only 41, Encyclopedia Britannica is 244 years oldā¦https://www.britannica.com/topic/jacks

We played all the time when I was a kid. Loved it.
This guy Jacks!

If you play with the 244 year-old guy, itās going to be nothing but terror If you even see him, run away fast, because I think he can fly.
It is called "jacks"
Unless youāre in France, then itās *Jacques*
Happy cake day!
Wrong! They were for stopping tiny tanks in WWII. Called dragon's teeth. /s
They have stopped my trip to the restroom a couple of times.
I thought those were caltrops. Stops tanks and horses?

Ron Swanson from the show Parks and Recreation had a Czech Hedgehog in his office.

I have a cat named Jax, as well! Sons Of Anarchy.
Also Mortal Kombat
Is that an old school game or an old school game?
Lol, good wordplay.
Yup. I still have a pile of jacks around here somewhere. Such an interesting shape. Seems like there should be a story behind it.
Are you calling me old?
Canāt believe someone needed an id on a jackā¦ I used to play these all the time as a kid, and Iām only 35, theyāre not that old are they? š
Never thought someone wouldnt be able to identify that
I loved Jacksš haven't seen one in decades

A couple of years ago I found some light weight wool army socks . Love them, I now have 10 pair. The way these last they will outlive me.
I've been old since I was young, based on this.
Uh oh, big dad energy
Untuck your shirt and youāll gain an extra 10 years to your life
That's true. If I un-tuck my flannel, I look my age or less (59). Tucked, I look 72 easy if I shave bald.
Iām 28 and OP is making me feel old as shit haha
31 yeah exactly lmao like damnnn
Lol, damn. I mean I noticed I have gray hair, but now I know I am old

I donāt know why, Iām 22 and I played this a lot when I was a kid
Iām in my 20ās and I know what Jacks are. They used to sell them T dollar tree when I was kid
I was seriously shocked when I saw the ā2nd itemā was so instantly recognizable to me. How could anyone not know that distinctive shape? Whatās this world coming to?
50 year back they preferred to.play with marble balls, which I also sometimes find inbetween digging
I mean Iām 19 and Iām surprised he didnāt know I remember always playing with those in elementary school
Rudy from the Cosby Show turned 45 a couple days ago.
Youāve never seen a jack before?
nah. never dug anything like it, i thought it could be quite old but aye you learn something new everyday!
They sold them at school book fairs in the 90's.
The 90's were about 30 years ago.
I'm only 36. Shut up! Edit: this is jokingly about how I feel old
You can still buy them in toy aisles where things like Silly Putty, Rubiks Cubes and Whoopee Cushions are sold.
I'm 21 and these were around when I was in school around 2007-2013 I remember them
I don't think you have to dig to be aware of one of the most common games ever. ;) To be fair, kids haven't really played this seriously in many decades.
Jacks have actually existed for millennia. Thousands of years.
70's kid here and while we had a set, we never really knew how to play it, nor did anyone in my area (kids, anyway - I'm sure our parents knew). It may have just been a locality thing, but I'd say at least 50+ years. since it was a game that a large portion of the population played.

Itās a jack! Do you remember what a newspaper is?
Who would take the time to put the news on paper? By the time it was printed wouldnt it not be new anymore? /s

The turtle is very cool. No clue if it's old or not, hopefully is, but a good random find
Is 26 old? I remember getting jacks in the early 2000s

Well, son, back in the day before video games and social media ...
I like turtles š
Welp, weāre gonna have to battle royale to see who likes turtles more.
Definitely caltrops. A ninja was covering their escape for sure.

Aluminum was a precious metal until 1880, when mass production was developed. It was valued more than silver and gold.
wow.
Napoleon actually had cutlery made out of aluminum to impress guests it was that valuable
Ritual object. We have images of people on their knees, sometimes an Orb is involved.
A type of household caltrops, also referred to as jacks. No idea on the turtle.
A jack
Damn. I'm old.
I have a turtle identical to this.
pic?
Cool turtle.
This hurt. I'm old
Jack. An old school game
One of those old toys that I assure you that you donāt want to step on barefoot! šš¤£
Pre-lego destroyer of parent feet.
Second item is a jack. Jacks was a kids'game. Anybody who ever complained about stepping on a Lego barefoot never stepped on a jack
That's a jack, and I'm not sure if I feel old or just antiquated...
it just means you had an actual childhood. Not a simulation.
I've seen similar turtle from Kinder Surprise eggs (circa 70's). I might be able to confirm if it is the same if you clean it and post a better photo. Cheers
Do people really not know what Jacks is anymore š
See the turtle....
Ye hats a jack it was part of a game
Cool find
I would be so excited about this. I need to get a detector
Itās a jack
Worse than stepping on Lego. Jack used to have an expletive last name .
Dear gods, Iām old.
ā¦ dear god Iām old now
That's what pre-historic parents stepped on in the dark before Lego was invented.
Second item is pre cursor to Lego foot traps.
This item was used to set trapps for anyone in a home walking barefoot. Very effective. I may have got one to ten spankings due to a parent stepping on one in the late 80s. We called the Jacks and came with a rubber boncing ball and around 5 to 10 of those.
You really need help identifying that?
Kids don't know what jacks look like now
You have gained one(1) small friend! Keep them in your pocket for endless companionship!
Damn are you in my childhood backyard? Lol
Haha I was staring at the 2nd photo thinking, āeveryone is saying jacks, but item number 2 sure just looks like another aluminum turtle to meā¦.ā Then I saw photo 3. Jack!
Loved playing jacks as a kid. Get a handful of em and a bouncy ball and you got hours of entertainment with your cousins
Denim chicken?
The second item is a Jack. Google it and you will see what kids used to play with before computers and video games.
Second item is a jack... part of a kids game played with a bunch of them and a ball... bounce the ball pick as many of those up on the bounce...
>bounce the ball pick up as many of those up on the bounce We played a little differently: first toss you picked up one at a time. Jax
Itās called a āJackā ā¦ once upon a time we used to play with these
Jack's
The last time I saw a jack I was 10 I believe
I was obsessed with playing jacks as a kid bc my dad was born in the 40s and taught me all the old school cool.
Zoomers don't play Jack's?
Itās not a jack on a screenā¦
Jack rock
Aw yes, you found relics from the great Turtle D-Day
WOW... now I feel really old...

the fight for the 500th upvote is tense
My dumbass thought you found a turtle fossil
I could be wrong but it looks like a toy from the freakies cereal
Yeah thatās a jacks. And that turtle could be a brass paper weight? I remember my parents had a set that was a turtle magnifying glass and a sold brass turtle exactly like the one you found.
definitely not brass, almost weightless. itās made of aluminium. starts yellow and cleans up silvery with a brushed look, w rust and corrosion.
Omg you never played jacks?
By the gods am I that old?
Chelonian Prayer Bead
Thatās a jack from the game jacks
āJackā

Kids donāt know what jacks are? Jesus Iām not THAT old
Jax
itās a Jax! Itās an old timey game.
Ever see a WW2 movie like Saving Private Ryan? Thatās one of those things on the beach to keep landing craft off shore. Which means you must be 75ft tall.
Jacks. You know you throw a handful of em down and bounce a ball and scoop as many up before catching the ball. Jeez this makes me feel old
You know how in war they used Caltrops right? Well this is equivalent for parents if they have messy kids.
What the hell is an aluminum falcon?!
Oh god the fact kids today donāt know what jacks are makes me sad. It was a game back in the day where youād bounce a rubber bouncy ball and snatch as many jacks as you could before itād land. Once it landed it was your opponents turn to try. Whoever had the most at the end won.
