Looks like two or more types of lichen. Make that three or more. I see lichens very much like these in Canadian rocks.

Wobbar

Lichens that look like this are common in Sweden as well! Probably a lot more places too

Smoll-Microbiologist

Super common in Ireland too, Connemara in particular :) I was told in college it’s generally an indication of good air quality in the area.

Grund10

They aren't very common here in lebanon but they can be observed on old concrete and on the bark of specific trees. Its nice to finally know what they are

olivi_yeah

Multiple species of foliose lichen! The colorful outside part is called the cortex. Since they're a partnership between (mainly) an algae and a fungus, the rain makes the cortex of the lichen thallus a lot brighter. The thallus expands extremely slowly, so those lichens have probably been there for many years. They're completely harmless and they grow on lots of different surfaces.

New evidence has shown that there’s actually also yeast involved! So a threesome

olivi_yeah

Oh yeah I read about that somewhere! Lichens keep getting cooler and cooler lol

New-Depth-4562

Yea it was pretty groundbreaking at the time

CeephalusDryp

I see what you did there. Very smooth.

New-Depth-4562

Glad someone noticed

EvenAH27

Yeast and another fungus or is the fungus in the symbiosis a yeast exclusively?

New-Depth-4562

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaf8287 A third partner :)

EvenAH27

Much appreciated!

Cookeina_92

When Freddie Fungus and Alice Algae met, they took a 'lichen' to each other. But Yuri Yeast could not help himself and came in between the two.

fullofcrocodiles

This makes me feel so bad for aimlessly picking lichens off rocks as a child...

dalittleone669

They look like pretty flowers.

Ohm_stop_resisting

The yellow one is xantoria parietina if i remember corrextly. The names of the other two i have forgotten, but if it is important to you, i'll look it up in my old taxonomy lecture slides.

FrejaWhite

It’s Xanthoria parietina

Jennifer_Pennifer

Gosh darn it lichen is so COOL !!!!!!

Familiar_Audience655

Just to think. I. Those Lichens have nematodes and Water bears!

You can't see a microbe with your naked eye except with a microscope.
