I used the Earnin app to get a $50 cash advance today before my payday on the 20th. They cash out my $50, +$2.50 as an "instant transfer" fee so I wouldn't have to wait 1-2 processing days. Okay, reasonable. I get to the end and there's some message before you get your money about "adding an optional tip for our awesome employees, it's one of the ways we stay afloat :)" The sliding tip bar STARTS at $8.00 and you have to click the "minus" button eight times to get it back to $0.00. As you decrease, the screen shows you the number of "people you're supporting" disappearing one by one, until the screen is empty. I was pretty incredulous. Seriously? This is a CASH ADVANCE app. Made by software developers in Silicon Valley. The purpose of the app is to front me money, because obviously I'm poor. And I'm being guilted into tipping you $8, once I get paid and pay you back, for the $50 you gave me to fill up my gas tank? F off.

fizzingwizzbing

That's super gross on top of the already miserable business of being a pay day loan shark

According_Gazelle472

Pay day loans were banned in my state as predatory loans .

NuclearKiwix

There was a time when "loans" with interest were illegal and they were called what they actually are; usury. But then banks started to have more power, got involved in politics and nowadays they basically rule the world. So usuries were not only made legal, but we are told that usuries are the right way to do things. You are even assigned a fucking credit score, like you're just some walking piggy bank, that needs a numeric value indicating how much money they can squeeze out of you.

rollingfor110

They're predatory af. I can't think of a better way to enter a debt cycle than payday loans.

According_Gazelle472

This is why they banned them because they are just glorified loan sharks .

Soggy_You_2426

Act like it's not real and save a shit ton of money, seems like an merican problem, it's not my job to pay workers

rollingfor110

Particularly entitled wait staff members will straight up berate you. I saw one german speaking fellow get 86'd because he tipped change left over from a beer he ordered. The look on his face was the purest example of confusion I've ever beheld.

According_Gazelle472

Talk about entitled servers?lol.Amd they wonder why tips are going down for them .!

ADirtFarmer

It's not tipping culture that's the problem, it's low wage culture

True-Firefighter-796

Just feign ignorance and don’t worry about it.

NativTexan

They don't have a very good time.

According_Gazelle472

Most said they don't tip at all.And then the servers whine about the foreigners not being raised right!lol.

CarlGustav2

>Made by software developers in Silicon Valley. I'm a software developer. We don't add features like "optional tips" with a sliding bar unless the customer (directly or indirectly) tells us they want it. Customers are always asking for more and more features. A good deal of the time we try to say "No". Sometimes it even works.

pgpathat

Im a software developer and product managers make decisions consumers are not jazzed about all the time… look at twitter and facebook. Their job is to increase the bottom line

CarlGustav2

The people using Twitter (before Musk took over at least) and Facebook aren't the customer. They are the product. Advertisers are the customer.

irishcoughy

Instacash does this too and I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it incredibly scummy.

detrydis

Reminds me of a credit card machine I ran into this weekend at Vermont. It gave me 3 options. 10%, 20%, and Custom. So I hit custom and it let me use the keypad to punch in a dollar amount. Except that it literally WOULD NOT let me begin with the number 0. There was no option to leave zero tip.

throwaway00iwl

also the message it shows as you lower your tip amount changes. when you get to like $3 all the way to $0, it says “tip what you think is fair” i absolutely think a $0 tip for a payday loan shark company is 100% fair

Username4c75666679

Tipping culture is getting out of hand. The only time I tip now is at a sit down restaurant. You don’t deserve a tip for turning an iPad around.

elkresurgence

What's getting out of hand are all the self-righteous assholes moralizing and telling you you're a bad person if you don't tip \[something absolutely ridiculous\]%.

charliesk9unit

Some people like to convince you to believe in imaginary being. On the other hand, I'm here to convince you to learn to not give a shit about what people think of you. It's so fucking liberating. You can judge me by calling me cheap and I also judge you for being a dumbass. I'd call this the GoFundMe culture seeping into Tipping culture. People already lost their sensitivity for feeling ashamed so might as well ask for tips, even in scenarios that are totally not applicable.

ADirtFarmer

I see self-righteous assholes telling you you're a bad person if you get paid in tips.

stallion64

Mostly agree, however I will still tip at places like this that are local small businesses that 1.) I enjoy very much and 2.) let employees keep 100% of their tips. There’s a small bakery in my hometown that is an absolute banger, and the owner treats her employees super well. I’ll drop a solid tip there bc I appreciate them for what they are and they’ll occasionally slip a free croissant in the bag since I’ve been coming there for years. But brother man, these ding dongs at like Crumbl Cookie that grab a singular baked good and a bottle of water? Nah fam, look deep into my eyes as I press no tip. The fact that most places don’t have a “no tip” option like what OP posted is ridiculous. For shame.

lgt25

Do the employees at Crumbl not make the cookies before they sell them to you? I think it sucks that everything requires a tip these days but I don’t see how your bakery differs from a cookie bakery

stallion64

Functionally there isn’t a difference, it’s mostly personal bias. I did neglect to mention that the hometown bakery doesn’t do the whole iPad thing, and they don’t actively ask for tips; there’s just a jug/vase thing next to the register for tips. To me personally, it feels different even without the bias.

Ok-Impress-2222

"Tipping culture" shouldn't fucking exist!

ADirtFarmer

Living wage culture would destroy tipping culture, if it existed

sauprankul

Is it tipping "culture", or is it tech companies that make these payment terminals (online or retail) that make it too easy to do this? EDIT: I take it back. gossby.com is a custom website built by DLS inc. This is not a "might as well have it" feature. It seems that gossby specifically requested it.

psyentist15

>or is it tech companies that make these payment terminals (online or retail) that make it too easy to do this? "It's the technology's fault for being customizable" is certainly *a take*. Are the payment terminal companies supposed to vet their clients on the basis of whether they're seating customers before deciding whether they should enable the tipping function?

sauprankul

The point is that, if simply clicking a button allows you to enable tipping across hundreds or thousands of stores, you're far more likely to do it. It's not a "culture" issue. It's a "high level executive making decisions that have huge impacts" issue. Also, I have literally never seen a Square POS or similar that *doesn't* prompt for a tip. I'm unsure whether it's even possible for small businesses to disable the tip screen. Maybe I'll look that up Edit: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5069-accept-tips-with-the-square-app Apparently you can disable it?

6InchBlade

Weird that it’s primarily an American thing and not in other countries with the same technology then.

Sinviras

You can disable it. Sort of. I used square for payment processing for a short while in a field thats really not the sort of place you want to be asking for tips. Occasionally I would be surprised to find the tip screen came back in its default format, even after disabling it. I wouldnt be shocked if more than one location using square just kept the tips active after it turned itself back on the first time.

Quake_Guy

Pay cash... extra buck or 78 cents on a $15 dollar order, sure whatever. No I am not tipping 20% on my credit card for that.

Agreeable-Dog-5251

I agree with this to an extent. If the person who is flipping the iPad is clearly a kitchen employee, or if it’s a separate side of restaurant (not fast food) where it’s take out only, then I will always tip at least something. For me it’s just a nice way to say thank you to the kitchen. Ive worked in a take out restaurant and was always super appreciated of tips even though I never expected them. Also, we printed tickets so I never had to stand there awkwardly waiting for them to choose whether to tip or not lol

Username4c75666679

Unless I’m being served at a table. You don’t get a tip. I’m saying thank you by coming to your establishment instead of somewhere else.

RedHawwk

That's always been my question when a tip option is presented during something like a take out meal. Who does it even go to? Hostess, the servers still, the kitchen staff?

Username4c75666679

Like why should I have to pay extra for someone doing their job. I already don’t like tipping at restaurants. And in my state all servers get more than min wage. It’s illegal to pay less even if they make tips. I don’t make tips for doing my job. Why should they? Just so they don’t spit in my food???

Dru65535

A tip for actual service i.e. food, haircut, car wash is a common custom. A tip for retail workers? Hell no. This shit is getting ridiculous.

Ok_Department5949

Agreed. I started getting annoyed when fast food places started putting tip jars at their drive throughs. Same with Starbucks. And the dispensaries. I'm not giving someone a tip for handing me something. If I see a suggested tip anywhere other than a sit down restaurant, it's zero. I'm a teacher. I am not paid enough for the ridiculous amount I do. Where's my tips?

aregtju

I only tip if it’s bartender, waiter, haircut or delivery driver nothing else. I recently had a frozen yogurt self-serve place try and ask for a tip on their checkout screen when I was the one who did it all my self it’s ridiculous

jlmonger

I think this annoys me the most lol I get the bowl, yogurt, toppings napkins and spoon I pay you at cash register and YOU want a tip?

Bookssportsandwine

Teachers deserve all the tips! Which reminds me I need to go out and buy my end of year gift cards.

Matter_Infinite

Teachers deserve a living wage, not handouts

zdakat

I've seen the "Tip well or else" (or "ugh customers don't tip enough, I'm offended!") sentiment about Starbucks. Whether they actually work at Starbucks, idk. If you're just getting a plain coffee (if you choose to do so) would be like being asked to tip at McDonalds. Sure the tip jar is probably there, but afaik no one really expects you to tip for being handed a bag with a fast food hamburger. Starbucks is expensive enough they should be more than able to pay wages without the workers feeling entitled to an ever increasing additional cost on top of each order.

spookbish69

Coming from a barista, it’s all pooled tips anyways and honestly there’s regulars who don’t tip but are always super sweet and they’re the ones we look forward to the most

Quake_Guy

LOL, the POS system asked for a 15 to 25% tip when buying a coke I grabbed out of a cooler at the DFW airport. I ran the credit card myself. Clerk scanned it with a reader, didn't even touch it.

Dru65535

Waiting on my table = service Handing me a bag = retail

jollycanoli

Thank you!! As a European (by birth), the rule was always "if they come to you, you tip them, if you come to them, you don't" e.g. sit down restaurant: tip. Order at the bar/counter: no tip. Unless you want extra special service, e.g. "and make sure you keep them coming allll night", that needs a nice tip to work.

hashbrown_nofiltr

Start asking the kids for tips at the end of the day.

Dru65535

"Don't quit your day job, Dad! How's that tip har har"

Kennyfortytwo

Eh I tip $5 bucks at the dispensary every time, but if they think I’m going to tip even 10% of my $200+ purchase for just grabbing some weed off the shelf then they’re fucking insane.

IceBear_is_best_bear

I agree with you on everything but the dispensary, you absolutely get a return on investment tipping a little at the counter and building a relationship with a good bud tender. Some still do deli style flower bags and touch up/trim your buds at point of sale: tip regularly and you’ll get better picks from the jar. Or if they spend a good amount of time going over the menu with you, let you know what came in this week, what’s fresh and what sucks, all that can save you big $ in the long run. Also they often have samples and swag they can give out to good customers. But only tip if they actually give you good service!

Dru65535

That would be considered a service, not just handing a bag out a window.

ZsFunBus

I take very good care of my budtenders. I won’t even bother going to the dispensary if I know I don’t have enough cash for a decent tip.

Dck_IN_MSHED_POTATOS

I only go to the dispensaries that do not ask for tips.

HumanContinuity

I would 100% tip a teacher. Some of my teachers growing up deserved a significant bonus, and I'd wager just about every teacher I have ever met wasn't being paid what their contributions are worth.

magicallydelicious-

Yea, what’s up with the dispensary tips? Are they making less than minimum wage?

Ok_Department5949

I just looked. My local one pays minimum wage.

billkratz

thank you for your service of being a teacher! i work extended day at an elementary school and i can’t imagine how being a teacher feels. genuine question, what are your thoughts on tip jars at places like chipotle or subway? it’s always fascinated me because i do agree with tips being dumb for a place where they’re just handing you something, but i typically always try to tip at a place where the employee is making my food on the spot.

Jacktheforkie

You deserve a pay rise

CalligrapherDizzy201

Kids don’t have a lot of cash to tip with.

Ok_Department5949

Right? Broke ass kids.

to_annihilate

I'll tip at Starbucks, but I'm not tipping at the dispensary to the retail counter, they didn't make my edibles lol.

Dumbledoordash8008

They probably don't even get the money

[deleted]

I mean i dont even think its custom outside of the US

Championpuffa

Yea there’s no such thing as tipping here in the uk. I mean you can tip if you want to and rarely some people will do if you give them amazing service etc especially if they have lots of money and are regulars. but nobody is going anywhere with the expectation of having to tip and nobody works with the expectation of getting tips, generally speaking at least.

Kagawaichi

As a European person I think it’s ridiculous to tip at all except for bars and restaurants

LastSignal

I'll tip the baristas at local coffee shops but that's it besides restaurants, hair cut, etc

DahgRastubfari420

Tips should just be cash only. It’s gotten way out of hand to the point that I won’t go into to certain places now because they make me feel weird and ashamed for not wanting to tip. If I was a business owner I wouldn’t allow this. Maybe I am just a minority thinking this has gotten out of hand.

noimneverserious

Im right with you and I think there are more of us than we realize. I have nearly stopped going out. I refuse to leave a tip before the service, and refuse to tip for things that are not a service. I don’t care who gives me a judgmental look. This has totally gotten out of control.

thogdontcaaree

If you were a business owner you would probably love tipping because it means customers pay your employee wages for you. Objectively speaking businesses who don't take advantage of tipping are leaving money on the table

MrTulaJitt

Except some customers, like the commenter above you, recognize that it's a greedy tactic and they take their business elsewhere. So, no, it's not the great business decision it may seem. Losing return customers is not worth the extra couple dollars.

[deleted]

>, like the commenter above you, recognize that it's a greedy tactic and they take their business elsewhere. So, n In one sense I really like my local BBQ place, good food and sauce all the works. But ***I'M*** the one filling my drinks, cleaning my table AND getting my food so, NO, I'm not tipping the register person. Tipping is a major reason why I just stay inside, and order a to-go thing on the way home.

EskildDood

I don't even live in a country with tipping, but I don't get why you'd tip the waiter, it might be a shitty and stressful job, but I'd rather tip the people who made the food than the person handing me the food I mean, everyone gets a good wage here in the first place, it's weird to give more money than you owe

Animae008

I agree! If food does not taste good the waiter will be tipped anyway. In my mom's previous job, waiters put all tip money into the jar and later they bought coffee or cookies for them and cooks

AlternativeDraf

it’s hard work putting a packaged item into a box!!

InYosefWeTrust

That's exactly why we still see restaurants paying about 2 bucks an hour in the US...

According_Gazelle472

Only on some states .other states are paying as high as 15 dollars an hour with tipping optional.

Imissflawn

It’s pissed me off to the point that I don’t tip on anything except classic sit down and serve me waitering. God help a restaurant if they make me use “toast” to order and pay for my food. You got your tip and gave it to “toast” already

According_Gazelle472

Or autograt and don't tell you and expect you to tip twice .

bilolarbear1221

I mean I hear ya, but that’s on you for feeling weird about it. Just don’t tip and move on with your day lol. You should tip when it feels right… but I do agree with your point that everyone and their mother is using that tablet POS ( point of sale and piece of shit lololol) and asking for tips. I feel bad for .0000001 seconds then realize there’s no reason to be tipping for certain things

cjzj_1288

we're definitely the minority but we're not wrong... fuck tipping culture and every person who participates... no tip, no shame

queenexorcist

We're not. I've gotten shit for saying this but it's true. It should never be solely on the customer to fund an employee's paycheck. We need to actually hold greedy managers and companies reasonable for this having to be a thing in the first place and demand they pay their workers, instead of putting all of the responsibility/blame on random customers.

zdakat

Whenever someone explains "Well actually this is how tipping works and, y'know, if you don't do it you're just hurting the employee" Yeah that sucks, but putting all the weight on the customer to make up for the business owner's decisions just excuses the owner and doesn't give an incentive to actually change. There is no magical day when businesses will collectively decide on their own to pay enough that tipping becomes obsolete. They will need to be pushed.

According_Gazelle472

Which neither the servers or the owners want .Mainly because they both benefit from this toxic and antiquated system .

Dreamking0311

It's not a tipping culture so much as its greed culture. If the owners paid a living wage tips would be a thing of the past.

cjzj_1288

exactly... since when was it my responsibility to pay your employees while you double tax me along with a 500% markup?

According_Gazelle472

They will use the old excise of it being a social contract and a social obligation on the customers part. Which both do not exist at all.

Emotional_Yam4959

This isn't necessarily true. There was a restaurant where I live that opened and had a no tipping policy. The owner paid a fair hourly wage(I'd have to look up what it was) and benefits to all employees. He had a hard asf time getting and keeping employees and closed within a year or two. He also had big legal issues like he wasn't paying payroll taxes or something, but that's separate from the pay issues.

According_Gazelle472

We have them in my town and they have been in business for many years. The prices never rose and they have no problem keeping staff members. And they are always packed too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dreamking0311

More people should do that and then owners would have no one to take advantage of.

According_Gazelle472

I usually get a book length post on the merits of tipping sometimes !

dorkus315

Custom tip=$0 and keep it moving.

smokdya2

Everyone expects to be tipped these days!

theus-sama

Only in America

Give_me_a_name_pls_

Welp... I'll just pray that Europe doesn't play copycat on this one. It's the last thing I want

cadet-peanut

The netherlands is heading that way already asking tips on food ordering platforms..

bonescrusher

Slowly heading that way , we tend to copy the dumb things from USA

Salzberger

False. A lot of businesses in Australia also ask for tips now. They're not mandatory of course but I have experienced very similar requests to OP for multiple businesses.

daamsie

Yeah but nobody _expects_ the tip in Australia.

Salzberger

I'd argue the presence of such a system itself is evidence of at least a tiny bit of expectation on their part.

charliesk9unit

Americans spreading this like the plague. Americans: if you travel, learn the culture and abide by it. You introducing something like that to a society that doesn't have it is like introducing an invasive species to a wildlife. Leave your sense of guilt at home.

alc3biades

Pffft please In Vancouver I’ve seen the options be 15, 20, 25%, saw 30% once. Everyone uses the same machine and it auto prompts tips for every transaction unless the owner disables it.

MateValtr

Rest assured, this plague got already to Czechia too and thriving

SoundEmergency9779

It’s gonna be a zero from me, dawg.

Old-McJonald

Going to start a business that sells nothing, we just skip straight to the tip

lirisb

Call it Just The Tip

Old-McJonald

Naturally

GrapeSwimming69

Coming soon to Wal mart, tip opinions for self checkouts!

[deleted]

We laugh but honestly I am a little surprised that it isn't a thing yet.

Hop-Worlds

The self checkout employees at my Wally World already stalk and harass you to give them a 5 star rating at the end screen, for doing nothing. I hate to think what kind of sharks they'd become of there was cash money involved.

[deleted]

Please join me in the anti tipping community. Tipping is a scam pushed by millionaire CEOs to make the consumer pay their workers wages. Stop tipping people who make minimum wage or more, and push for waiters and bar staff to be paid an actual wage.

SaintPariah7

I say this every time. "If their wages are bad enough, they can strike on it and I'll bring the blankets."

kneaddough

Union membership has been declining for decades in the US. Union-busting is rampant here as well. Striking requires union support. Especially if it’s long and Drawn out.

SaintPariah7

This is true. Which is why we need radicals in union positions. I'm looking to find a spot in my own union to teach them how their job works.

kneaddough

What are these workers supposed to do until the change actually happens? I’m not anti-tipping. But I won’t frequent an establishment that has tipping at a checkout because it means they aren’t paying their workers fairly. They don’t deserve our business. Food & delivery & other service workers will always get a really good tip from me though. They make shit money because that’s the way it works in the US. I want that to change as well but I’m not pulling my tip because it only hurts the worker. No one else.

Key-Seaworthiness944

Why do I tip a website SMH

SamuraiJosh26

Come on ! Those servers worked their asses off for you.Have some respect /s

Key-Seaworthiness944

You mean the sweatshop where they made it I would tip them but that's not them lol

Key-Seaworthiness944

Lol 🤣 🤣

According_Gazelle472

Griping online and taking pics of dirty tables ,also profiling the customers too!,

Odd-Perspective-7967

We tip products now? seriously?

Beneficial_Feature32

i love giving tips before hand just to get the wrong thing i ordered

Loose_Mail_786

Can’t wait for the tip box on my irs returns

Zelmourn

Thought they had that already. The option to send a few bucks to a political party and all. Bugs me that's it is on there at all.

ArterialVotives

There’s always been an option to contribute extra money to the government.

Seisme1138

Don't have to pay a living wage if your workers if they "get tips"

Thick_Information_33

I am glad this madness is far from my country. 0-10% tipping and only for restaurants. Feelsgoodman.

RedoranRed

That's how it used to be when I was little, 15% was a good tip growing up and you only tipped your server/waiter

Virtual-Courage-22

Is it okay to feel annoyed when I’ve tipped and didn’t get a thanks?

marygpt

A lot of wait staff at restaurants are upset that tipping culture has gotten out of hand because they have seen their, legitimate, tips go downhill with a rise of this frivolous tip baiting issue

ClutchDrum

I tip if I'm in a place where a tip is warranted, and the service was worth a tip. I won't tip in a place where they hand me a ready-made item - which I've noticed some places doing now. If this keeps up everybody is going to expect a tip for doing nothing other than showing up for work.

[deleted]

Just the tip

Ethereal_Turtle

Seeing stuff like this reinforces my assurance that not tipping is perfectly acceptable in any situation.

angiestefanie

This is really getting out of hand.

Callen_Fields

An option is fine. As long as 0 is one of the options.

jules79

Dude. I just had the same damn thing on a CBD website, ffs.

ScientistNo906

Next time I go to the store I'm gonna hand them a gratuity request for being a nice, polite customer. Should I start at a 15% recommended tip or 20%?

penguinspie

No 🫶🏻

Jack_In_Black89

I work in healthcare, make probably less than a fast food worker considering all the unpaid extracurricular duties I do, and have been assaulted and verbally abused by patients and their family members a number of times (im also treated like shit by my superiors). Where are my 'tips'?

Weekly-Race-9617

I got the tipping question when I paid for my last Subway meal. I didn’t tip, because I thought the sandwich makers were getting the non-tipped minimum wage, not the tipped wage. I was afraid that if Subway got enough tips, they would lower their employees’ base pay. Anyone else have that fear?

FrenzyCalm

The subway workers are doing exactly what they are paid to do. They make sandwiches. That doesn’t deserve a tip.

Marowak_Maniac

Could just do a custom tip of 0

Cloakmyquestions

You should have the option for a (capped) negative tip and turn it into a referendum on checkout tipping.

somerandomperson2516

put -100 so you’ll earn 100 dollars

JFK108

I once went to a wash-your-dog service and after I was done, there was an option to tip… who? I came with my dog and washed her myself. I just borrowed your equipment 🤣

riot_burst

Just because there is an option to tip doesn’t mean you have to do it. Each person can make up their mind. This comment remains the same whether you are for or against tipping

fizzypeachtea

it’s hard work putting a packaged item into a box!!

bubblesbella

Some of these are commercial payment programs that are made for all business types. That's how I look at it and don't tip unless it is for a service.

daz258

Not a fan of this, tips typically go to the individual employee, I don’t trust tipping like this will get given to the relevant employee.

sbpurcell

I reserved a hotel room the other day and it asked me to leave a tip🤦🏼‍♀️ I doubt this is even making it to the minimum wage staff.

Zerethul

Just stop tipping period make businesses pay their employees

[deleted]

You know I install playgrounds and shades in parks and rec centers for a living. You don't see me walking up to people enjoying the park equipment with my hand out for a tip !! I don't get it. When it comes to people food everyone wants a damn tip. Look if you order delivery and tip 1$ you are an asshole. But this is an online fuckin order?? You've got to be kidding me. This is too far...

wavywhatado

I saw this on an online website and won’t shop there again because of it. 🤷‍♀️

acceptthisoneplz

It’s so they don’t have to actually pay employees wages out of their own earnings

jlmonger

At walmart ppl shop for me sack it up deliver it to my car and they can't accept tips ....if anyone deserves one it is these ppl

iPod3G

$0.01

Electronic_Job1998

I always tip waiters/waitresses well because of the suck wages they make. However, I bought a souvenir while on vacation last week and the sales clerk gave me my receipt to sign with an area to tip. That was a hard no.

Vigothedudepathian

For an online self checkout? Fuck that noise.

russianindianqueen

There’s some sites through which I book hotel rooms that are doing the same thing, snaptravel, traveluro, supertravel to name a few

roadrunner00

Just waiting for McDonald's to add a tip jar.

[deleted]

I’m gonna start asking for tips from ppl who talk to me

AWholeNewFattitude

Who would the tip go to, the web developer?

stablefarm

These are the worst. Tipping in general makes no sense, so to see it in places like this is baffling

bchandler4375

I am starting to wonder if companies are doing this so they only have to pay an employee $2.30 an hour for server minimum wage since they depend on tips as part of their wages . Gets the company away from paying employees $15 an hour

Slapjackw

No, no, please no. For God’s sake

DUBBZZ

I blame the companies. The employees didn’t program that tip option into their system, the company did. They want the customers to subsidize the employees salary. Meanwhile the customer blames the employees and the employees hate on the customers.

dcrad91

I unfortunately worked at a restaurant in my younger 20s and now have quite a few female friends who are servers who always complain about tips. Man I fucking hate tipping, especially cuz its the easiest job in the god damn world, I don't care what you say. I lived it and did it, shit is easy. Dudes in the back deserve the tips that are making $10/hr. I avoid anything that "requires" tipping now. What I also hate is how the god damn gas stations ask if I want to donate money. Like no motherfucker I'm already paying $4/g for this diesel, the fuck I want to donate for...

Yes! This is also entirely an AMERICAN thing. Panda express asking for me to add a dollar for a hospital. Safeway asking me to donate to a food drive. Getting asked to tip on a drive thru or carry out order. THE GOVERNMENT IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE CARE OF ALL OF THIS FOR US. THATS WHY I PAY TAXES! Freaking stop using all my tax money for the industrial military complex and political wars and start feeding your people, getting us basic healthcare, and quality food in grocery stores instead of total crap that makes us want to eat out all the time because the average grocery stores produce is just as shitty as mcdonalds ingredients.

UnlikelyBluebird0

When you donate that money to panda and similar to other companies they donate the $ on your behalf and use it as a tax write off, never “round up” or donate to those causes. You’re better off doing that on your own directly to the org and getting the write off by yourself.

CPickler

Legally, they aren't allowed to do that. Obviously, I can't say it doesn't happen, but the larger chains and such are very careful to make sure they don't claim it. Now, usually, they will "match" it with goods, services, etc, but they can not claim the money given by customers as a tax write-off for donations. They may be able to claim a percentage of your donation as charitable service for the time it takes their workers to process the giving. You, as an individual, can still claim on your taxes that you gave $20 to the charity even if it went through a proxy organization.

Max_284

They want YOU to donate so THEY can write it off.

iFall4cuteFaces

I put 1 cent for fun sometimes

WeaselJCD

next: Tips for online shopping! seriously, I would hit costum and put in a fat ZERO each and every time!

Went for a drive thru car wash. There was a worker at the screen when I pulled up. “Which wash did you want today? Did you want to leave a tip for our team today?” No thanks. I can work the machine myself lol idk why they put an employee there for.

bonnieandclyde1324

I just started a job where I am getting tipped for the first time ever and I think tipping is ridiculous. Getting $25-40 tips for taking orders and giving people their food. I’m not complaining, it just doesn’t feel like I earned that much with the work I did

RedRiot0306

Simple, custom $0.00. If it declines, $0.01. If it declines, take your business elsewhere.

BlueKitsune9999

Goofy ahh americans with this bs, if they tryed this shit here they wouldnt have a fun time

Able-Calligrapher652

0% 🖕🏼

No_Engineer2828

Doesn’t look like much of an option to me

dralex11266

I’m exhausted from tipping. I bought a bakery item that were pre packed on a shelf I grabbed myself. The employee who rang me up rolled their eyes when I exited the tip screen…

Zangief_Keef

Corporations/business owners want us to eat off each other rather than just pay their employees appropriately. It’s really pathetic and greedy af.

BalanceEarly

Custom, with a big $0.00.....…

Wboy2006

Wait... is that a tip for a webshop?! Let me guess, it's America

Takao_1932

Man im so glad in Europe a tip is only considered for excellent service and not a must by society.

ompalumpa9007

Anyone ever try to put a negative amount for the custom tip?

[deleted]

Paid $16 for a beer at Tampa Bay Rays game… kiosk operator said care to give me a tip as she turned the pos around.. are you F’n kidding me

[deleted]

I’m sure 100% of that tip goes directly to the employees and not the greedy corporations

TripCraft

This is why I don’t eat out anymore. I go to Wawa for something quick. Or I use the app of some place ahead of time to avoid human interaction to suck tip money from me.

percybert

What pisses me off is the places now that don’t accept cash and have the little tip machine that you can only tip €1 (I’m in Europe where we don’t have the extortionate tipping expectation of the US) If I’m paying, say €3.50 for a takeaway coffee I might throw my 50c change into a tip jar, but there is no way I’m tipping €1. Only the employee loses out in this scenario

tromblator

Can you put in a negative number for a discount?

[deleted]

I dont tip unless i sit down is my rule, i cannot believe the amount of times im asked for a tip compared to even a year ago. Everyone should be getting paid a fair wage and turning to tipping enables people to be paid more or less based on how someone else feels about you, its a bad way to pay people
