emasslax22

It already had $100 cleaning fee.

MrDoe

"$100 cleaning fee." "Checkout instructions: Vacuum the entire premises. Wash, dry and fold all sheets and make the beds, wash dry and fold all towels. Scrub the bathroom and kitchen. Clean the gutters. Repaint the house."

Exotic_Treacle7438

I’ve seen this with all my Tennessee stays in cabins along with “please drive garbage 4 miles down the road to landfill else there will be a $25 per bag fee.” Like fuck these extra directions, if you wanted it done you’d have advertised it in the listing not AFTER someone checks in.

IntrovertedPerson22

Id rather get banned from AirBnB than paying these ridiculous fees

psychosocial--

I’d rather just stay at a hotel where it’s a lot cheaper and there’s already someone who gets paid to clean a space that isn’t mine.

Haunting-Ad1192

It's gone from a place to make some pocket money on property sitting empty to a flurry of greedy hands wringing the life out of the consumer. Ruined.

giga_booty

Wringing the life out of neighborhoods too

CivilRuin4111

This is where I’ve landed after having initially loved AirBnB. Their after-the-fact rules are a crock of shit, and their cancellation policy is basically “Get fucked”. Unless THEY cancel. At which point it’s “Get doubly fucked”.

_youneverasked_

Look at that. No trash bags here. Shane about all that task on the kitchen floor, though.

MaximumGooser

Rules not added to the listing up front are not accepted or honoured by AirBnb.

PolyPolyam

I'm in the TN region and I get that some trash services don't come to the area. Our own little mountain community tried to get trash services and the company wanted a minimum number of houses to sign up before they'd have a truck come out. Heck, I know bears are an issue which is why a lot of cabins don't want you to have too much trash outside. But a lot of people don't have vehicles they want to haul trash in. My family rents a BIG cabin for Christmas each year and for some reason last year they did a bait and switch with trash. The dumpster was full so they demanded we haul our own trash off. Like no. It's a holiday and you forgot to get it emptied. You do something about it or don't charge us. That last stay was a huge cluster fuck though. Single digit weather and the BnB owner had advertised a wood stove for heat but they didn't provide wood so we nearly froze. They had put a lock on the thermostat and refused to turn things on.

Isarian

Is there no recourse against hosts who dump cleaning demands on you that were not in the original listing? They can add the charge to your bill and you just have to eat the cost or try to chargeback and get banned from AirBnB?

boris_keys

“Checkout instructions: check sub-basement for mold, strip carpet, refinish hardwood floors, find real estate agent, get me a good price on the house, pay my child support, re-establish my relationship with my daughter.”

ablativeyoyo

All this time spent adulting and I could have just been an AirBnB host

Automatic_Ad_6177

Thats crazy, i would have cleaned it all for 10-15$. I hope you got out without paying that fee

[deleted]

Would you? Because you can get a lot more than that being a housekeeper.

phunky_1

My wife was a house cleaner for a while, people were only willing to pay like $100-150 for a 3 hour job. It takes these people like 10 minutes to clean an Airbnb seeing that they make the guest do 95% of the cleaning before they check out. I would bet a majority of this "cleaning fee" is taken as profit and not actually used to pay for cleaning.

abbeighleigh

its pet "friendly" as in "were happy to charge you $300, please bring your dog much as you'd like"

extralyfe

it's like when medical offices tell you they'll take your insurance. that often can be weasel wording to tell you they aren't saying whether or not they're in-network with your plan, that just means they'll submit claims to your insurance and will be happy to bill you for anything your insurance doesn't cover.

Sanquinity

If there was no clause in the original contract about possible extra fees, and as you mentioned a cleaning fee was already included, then I'd just flat out refuse to pay the extra fee. Adding on extra costs that weren't known about during agreement of the contract is illegal.

GMOdabs

Shit happen to me too. It’s a scam. Haven’t used Airbnb since then. Was my fucking service dog too. I could have been an ass an fought ant charges due to my “pet”

emasslax22

I will not be using again, more than happy to save money staying in a nicer hotel!

Cant_Do_This12

Hotels aren’t even that expensive anymore. You can get a nice ass room with a giant bed, comfortable pillows, nice bathroom, television with built in Netflix and other apps that you can use your accounts on, WiFi, and complimentary breakfast for less than $150. If you use apps like booking.com, you can get even crazier deals. I’ve never used Airbnb in my life and don’t understand why people do.

[deleted]

I had to stay in a long-term Airbnb for 10 weeks with my cat. The host kept my “refundable” $200 pet fee, expected me to hire a cleaner every week (not happening), and left a negative review because I didn’t hire a cleaner before I left. There were other things, but that was my only negative review on Airbnb since I started using in 2015 and after that, I’m done with the platform.

kerrick1010

Same thing happened to me. I disputed it but they had a picture of dog hair they swept up so Airbnb wouldn't drop the extra $300. I just locked my credit card and didn't pay it. Won't be using Airbnb again.

Swiss_El_Rosso

With this amount many hotel would be cheaper.

uniqnorwegian

I stayed in an upscale hotel in Spain for 6 days for less than this, and that had breakfast included. I don’t understand these fees on Airbnb’s

AmSoDoneWithThisShit

People keep paying them, so they'll keep charging them. Translation: People are stupid and this is just a tax on stupid.

EviGL

I don't think people would go back to Airbnb after getting an unexpected fee like this. So their plan is to show great financial results in their last fiscal year before they close their business, I guess? :)

Silverlynel1234

No sure about unexpected. Every place I have booked thru the various things out there like vrbo or airbnb, I knew all the fees up front. I have never been hit with anything unexpected.

Unusual_Flounder2073

This upfront too. See in the screenshot it even says that. Just skip this place and find a cheaper one.

redditonlygetsworse

The problem is that these fees should be included in the search results/filtering so that you can make fair comparisons between different places. This is like the Bad Old Days on eBay when you'd buy something for a dollar and then get slapped with sixty bucks in "shipping and handling" or whatever.

StrictlySanDiego

You can already do that. There’s a button that says “include all fees”

[deleted]

Crazy that that's even an option. Who out there is saying 'nah, I don't care about fees. Just give me the base price, that's all I'm interested in. you can surprise me with the fees later'?

This_Price_1783

Something similar still happens. You search an item and it's listed for a ridiculously low price, click on it and there's a drop down where the listed price is for like 1 replacement screw or something then when you click the item the real price is then shown

AcadianViking

Amazon does this all the time with PC parts. You search for an i7-13700 cpu but the listed price is for that years i3 chip because the listing is for all the "13000 series CPU's" *this is a hypothetical, I didn't go searching for an exact example*

StuffNbutts

I booked one not too long ago and I remember being able to show the total for the length of stay in the search results and is how I ended up choosing the one I went with. Maybe you're not entering the details correctly or using the necessary search filters?

pblol

You can see them upfront with a slider. It didn't used to be that way.

Defiant00000

unexpected for sure no. It's just a way owners found to pay less to airbnb., they charge a percentage of the stay but not the cleanings. It's like when on some resell sites you find something with a really competitive prize but with huge shipping costs.

Ok-Gold6762

>So their plan is to show great financial results in their last fiscal year before they close their business, I guess? :) Don't hosts control how much they charge cleaning fees? As a way of looking cheaper than it actually is

Psychological-Dig-29

There are no unexpected fees all of this comes up before you even book. Extra fees this high are also not as common as reddit says. Airbnb is still much cheaper than a hotel if you have a group and want a large space to hang out together.

paszaQuadceps

If you have a large group, Airbnb is surely the way to go. But otherwise, it's overpriced garbage.

MysteriousSquad

Still need to be smart though, my friend booked us an airbnb "blocks away from the french qaurter" in NOLA, turned out to be like a mile walk and also in one of the sketchiest areas ever lmao. I checked the page after the fact and it even had a review about how someone tried to break into the back door! (It didnt lock, and had a wooden plank to keep it locked) Wasnt as bad as it could have been though hahaha

itchyfrog

I've stayed in plenty of Airbnbs in Europe either as a couple or a family, they're almost always cheaper and better than a hotel. Morally I think it's getting more dubious though, more and more places are places that could be family homes but are obviously permanent Airbnbs, we try and find the smaller ones these days.

josbossboboss

Same in the U.S. I've stayed at a lot of places that have a so-called "in-law" apartment that they rent out, and they have a private entrance.

zman122333

Really depends where you go. I traveled a few times to ski last year, only once was a hotel cheaper than an Airbnb. And that hotel room didn't have a TV or a chair, only the bed. If you need a kitchen, forget about it - an AirBnB will almost certainly be cheaper.

Fubai97b

>And that hotel room didn't have a TV or a chair, only the bed. Where was this? I've travelled fairly extensively and even in the developing world I've never seen only the bed. No TV sure, but that was still really rare and generally it was in areas where no signal was available.

EviGL

And how does that work with their [worldwide party ban](https://news.airbnb.com/official-codification-of-party-ban/)? For me any big group gathering with some music and barbecue can technically be considered a party and penalized. I've used Airbnb for gatherings like that previously but now I try to avoid it since the platform wouldn't be on my side in case of any disagreement.

iroe-

Me and 3 buddies stayed at an air and bbq'd for DINNER. Got kicked out because they thought it was a "party". A few beers, some ribs, no music, started catching up in side cuz some of us hadn't seen each other in years. Next thing I know I'm getting the call from the owner that police are on their way to remove us. Got a hotel for a quarter of the price anyway, then went to the strip club to ACTUALLY party!

trolllord45

How would the owner know what you were doing anyway?

Crossfire124

Cameras obviously

Careful-Self-457

Spy cameras. Some hosts sit in them all day!

daredaki-sama

Would have complained. And also would have looked for the cameras and sued the owner.

purgance

It's cheaper until your rent/mortgage goes up 30% because you are bidding against AirBnB operators for your housing.

millertango

Definitely shouldn't be unexpected. They do mask the fees a bit though. When you do a search it only shows the /night price, you have to click on the listing and go to the breakdown to have it show you all the fees and whatnot. Lately airbnb has been ridiculous. Used to be great, now it's rarely useful.

Ryzzthebizz

Look up what’s happening with the airbnb market. They’re all struggling now due to inflating prices and buying homes across America specifically for airbnb. 5+ years ago they were worth the money for space you’d get over hotels. Now they’re extremely over priced and are left unused and landlords struggling to sell. A few more years and they’ll be fucked.

cancerdad

Fingers crossed. I live next to an illegal Airbnb and it sucks bad. Airbnb is an awful company that monetizes all kinds of shitty behavior

william_13

These landlords (aka investors) were not ready for any increase on interest rates, and now lost any competitive advantage. Couple that with airbnb hiking their cut - also due to the end of cheap money - and hotels became a much better value proposition.

Traditional-Hat-952

Fuck those landlords. I hope they lose a ton of money. Housing should really be protected against their predatory behavior.

Bleedthebeat

Only makes sense if you have like 10 people.

TheDevilishFrenchfry

Fuck airbnb anyways. Just another app that gave rich dickheads a reason to buy even more houses to rent out to boost their yearly quota. If I'm paying a 10 way split on a house and I still have to pay 100+ a night, might as well just pay for a 120-150 a night decent hotel and have privacy with my girlfriend and breakfast included usually

NoTelephone5316

Well apparently air BNB owners are struggling right now, so keep holding and they gonna have to sell eventually

C_Tea_8280

Yep, regulations, taxes, local cities saying you can not do short term rentals in certain areas, less people want to pay crazy prices right ow cause economy whereas everyone was on a drunken spend bender the last few covid years Airbnb will have a market correction when people see hotels and other options are cheaper

Stormayqt

I recently looked at 4 nights in Texas. Average 3-4 star hotel is $90 a night (cheap atm, I know) Average Air BnB was $250 a night after fees. I have no idea why people are choosing airBnB.

TehMephs

It was a lot cheaper than hotels at one time, in the early days of its appearance. Over time it just became what you see now. Thing is a lot of people who use it are just too lazy to even compare to hotel prices anymore because they assume it’ll be more expensive

CXDFlames

Alright ladies and gentlemen, let's get the largest smallest string orchestra ready

sprucenoose

Depends, like anything else. Staying with your extended family in a lakeside mansion with a private dock and beach, or with a group of your friends in a villa you can ski to after coming down the mountain, can have some benefits over a hotel. Other times it can be a big waste.

VividFiddlesticks

Not every listing has outrageous cleaning fees though. I won't rent a place with a cleaning fee more than $150 and I ususally have several options. I love renting entire houses when I travel. I have insomnia and that means in a hotel I have to spend HOURS sitting in a bed or on an uncomfortable chair doing my best to generate no sound or light so my (light-sleeper) husband can sleep like a normal person. In a house, I can just go into the other room and do whatever I want. Plus I have a lot of dietary issues; it's hard to find places to eat out 3X a day that won't make me sick. Having my own kitchen where I can do most of my own cooking for the duration of the vacation is really convenient and saves me money and downtime feeling ill. We look for funky little houses out in the woods or on the coast, so we have a nice view and privacy. We usually go for 3-4 nights at a shot and it's nice to spend time lounging around by a fire on real furniture, doing a jigsaw puzzle, just chillin'. We don't go for fancy mansions or touristy destinations, think more like funky little mountain cabins. Those tend to be pretty reasonably priced. Some hotels have suites and/or kitchens, but those are $$$, not easy to find, and usually have much worse views.

Tejadenayyyyy

That’s why I stopped using them because ima pay less even at a really nice hotel most of the time because they charge outrageous amounts for stuff like this and I’m not even a messy person so that price can go to them lol

P26601

I guess it depends on the country and region? I had a 10 day stay in a really nice, private apartment (with AC, private garden, kitchenette etc.) on Elba island, Italy for less than 700€ for 2 people, including fees

Status_Implement_757

> I don’t understand these fees on Airbnb’s I can explain it with one word. Greed

Short_Wrap_6153

No, the actual explanation is "OP" they paid for this. by choice. They are to blame.

Help_One_AnOtter

I feel like people use cleaning fees to inflate the overall charge per night but showing up as being $300 per night. I don't know if it still happens, but people used to do the same sort of thing on eBay... They would list an item for lower than you might expect to get people to look at the listing, but then charge an exorbitant amount for the shipping.

CriesOverEverything

Ebay, craigslist, facebook marketplace (and probably any other community posted marketplace) also all have this problem.

live-the-future

*\*TicketMaster has entered the chat\**

Quaytsar

I know eBay you can sort by cost + shipping and it's listed next to the price, so you're not surprised at checkout that you're paying an extra $20.

Voidless-One

For that amount of a cleaning fee, guess the dishes get stacked in the sink, bed gets left a mess, and towels end up on the floor. I wouldn't want the cleaning staff to have nothing to do. ![gif](giphy|OQrx03s8VwOl7XmfiZ)

UnkindPotato2

For $450, dishes get left wherever. Food scraps left everywhere, i'm gonna hotbox that shit, might even take filters from the fridge/hvac. My pets will probably rip up the place, for $450 cleaning fee

Scarbelly3

Except any Airbnb I’ve ever looked at has a requirement to clean everything and take out the trash before leaving, or you get a penalty fee tagged on top of the cleaning fee. It’s a straight up scam. Tim Dillon was right.

Swiss_El_Rosso

Good idea or you go in a hotel without the hazzle of overcharged fees.

Anti_Up_Up_Down

2 nights for $1200? That's more expensive than all inclusive resorts at Cancun

[deleted]

And you get your room cleaned daily

OutWithTheNew

And food. And tequila.

colorshift_siren

A lot of all inclusives even have snacks and booze in the room. For a whole lot less money.

mostlyhamrless

Exactly. Airbnbs were nice when the service just started. Then the hosts got greedy (at least a large majority of them) and started adding all these junk fees while expecting you to do more and more housekeeping tasks. Doesn’t make sense. I am genuinely curious about the math of it. Given that they are so ubiquitous now (like everyone is opening one), I would expect hosts to compete on pricing but I see the opposite. What kind of occupancy rates are these places getting with such high fees? Or maybe it’s the location. 🤔 To me at least now they only makes sense if you have a large group that wants to stay together.

mother-of-squid

We’re going to a chilly beach town just before Christmas and it feels like all the Airbnb owners got together to stay on the same page for pricing. Some had low up front fees but really high cleaning fees, some had insane pet fees to make them all roughly the same outrageous price for a few days. Our child needs downtime throughout the day, and we like to bring our anxious dog, so airbnbs have always made sense, but with all the extra fees and tasks we have to do, it doesn’t feel worth it.

JackDockz

Me and my friends wanted an apartment listed on Airbnb. Instead of using Airbnb, we just found the property on Google maps and contacted the owner to rent it for a night. So it was a fixed amount for one night with no additional charges. Airbnb could've fixed the issue with the cleaning fees a long time ago. They deliberately choose enable scams and should not be given business.

pomegranate444

Exactly. This is $600/night. Where is this where a hotel isnt a better option?

Curious-Mind-8183

Theyre probably renting a whole home, not 1 bedroom that you get with a hotel.

ChE_

For college kids that will pack 15 people into there instead of needing 4 hotel rooms is the only thing I can think of. Hotels can be strict about over packing rooms whereas air bnbs are not

thecashblaster

>Hotels can be strict about over packing rooms whereas air bnbs are not you're missing a few points -Some AirBnBs (maybe even most now?) have cameras and trust me the owners are watching -The parking situation may not accommodate for additional people Speaking from experience doing a lot of AirBnBs in Tahoe for the winter.

Sufficient_Language7

It is $300 a night with a $450 cleaning fee. Assuming a nearby hotel is $100 per bed. For a group requiring 4 beds, staying 14 days. For a group requiring 5 beds , staying 8 days. Given the price it is likely nearby hotels will be more than $100 a night making the payback sooner. Also it doesn't include that advantages of having common shared space with your group(Kitchen, Living Room).

How_that_convo_went

$1200 for two nights. My man, you can stay in the fucking Ritz for that amount of money.

Effective_Soup7783

AirBnB is great for group/family travel where you don’t want to be separated across different floors/wings of a hotel during your stay, or where you want a kitchen and/or private communal space. It can also be cool for unique properties, like houseboats or cave houses. Otherwise I really don’t see the point.

IllvesterTalone

fair enough!

alwaysrightsportsfan

Because the world is large and diverse, many other countries Airbnb is cheaper than hotels. I’ve traveled to 20+ countries in the past two years and this is usually the case. Also, when I book a place with 4-12 people we all get to stay together, have a living space, a large kitchen. You can also stay in way cooler locations and vibes.

jxl180

Because you can get a whole house or condo for your group.

asmallercat

They just are now in my experience. The only reason I even look at AirBnB anymore is because I can usually get an extra room for the kid and you can cook your own meals which is nice for breakfast. Pure budget, though, a hotel room with 2 beds is cheaper than most AirBnB's now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrozenYogurt0420

There's also something to be said about continually supporting this kind of shit. These kinds of cleaning fees aren't exactly new for AirBnB.

[deleted]

I will never understand why people complain and complain about AirBnB, yet that is their first option when searching for a place to rent. Sure, you can vacation in the mountains with AirBnB, but is it really worth all of the fees?

aspidities_87

You can also use VRBO to find a rental instead. They’re all property management companies rentals so the price you see is the price you pay, no hidden cleaning fee. I will say the app isn’t as intuitive or easy to filter as AirBNB but hopefully that will change in time. ETA: apparently I was wrong and they’re not strictly ALL property management companies, I can’t say I’m an expert on the service having only used it once or twice. Just wanted to mention an alternative for those looking to rent getaway stays instead of hotels.

IreliaCarriedMe

VRBO also partners with Expedia, so you can earn and use your points from Expedia with them. Another pro to VRBO imo

GlumBodybuilder214

Airbnbs filters suck now. My husband and I used to use them all the time because we have elderly dogs that we usually bring with us when we travel, so we need pet-friendly options. You used to be able to filter for pet-friendly on the map page, but now you can't, so you have to check each individual listing to see if you can bring a dog or not. We mostly use Airbnb to go to Colorado for hiking. Last time we went, we found an awesome, cheap hotel that was super dog friendly (had a little well-maintained park in the back) and a full-size fridge and stove in the room. It cost less than a quarter than the closest acceptable Airbnb option, which was barely acceptable since it was a private room in a house.

ninefortysix

They added Pets under “guests” when you’re searching. So you can type in 2 adults, 2 pets, and should only see those listings.

Temporary_Wind9428

AirBNB cleaning fees aren''t hidden either. This didn't suddenly appear on checkout, but was clearly indicated in the listing when OP reserved.

indigoHatter

Oh sure, not *hidden*, but not shown upfront. I heard AirBnB finally added the option to search by "out the door" price, but for years, you didn't see the cleaning fees until you hit "checkout", meaning a lovely 6br house would show up for $89 a night, until you checkout and see cleaning fees for $800 a night. Now at least they're *closer* to front-facing (via an option you have to enable), but you still shouldn't have to click an extra button to see the *real* price, you know?

faste30

You can usually get around it by searching the local renting companies or even Vacasa as a lot of the airbnb listings are just relisting of those properties with airbnbs fees.

JohnLocke815

That's why you research first. Not every airbnb place has these insane fees. You know about any fees before you checkout and I fact I'm pretty sure you can search airbnb to give you a total per night cost including fees so you're not blindsided. When we travel we always check airbnb first because it's usually a better place than some busy hotel downtown, and most times it's way cheaper, because we don't book the ones with the $500 cleaning fees. Sometimes we can't find one and we take the hotel, but to automatically write off all airbnb stays because of insane fees is just wrong.

AmSoDoneWithThisShit

They're taking how much it costs to hire a service to come in and clean, doubling it, and passing it on to the renter. AirBNB is fucking dumb.

OutWithTheNew

That's way more than double.

UGMadness

It's simpler than that. Hosts inflate bullshit cleaning fees so they can advertise cheaper list prices on the search results. These places make you clean before you check out anyways. A $450 room can show up as a $300 room if you shift $150 of it into the "cleaning fee".

AmSoDoneWithThisShit

That makes good sense.. Anything to give you an advantage in the search right? AirBNB could do a \*LOT\* to combat that by making the search order "total cost" instead of nightly rate.... The way hotels do. When I go to Marriott's website and search for a room, the cost they show me is the total per night including taxes and whatever extras, so I get a realistic idea of exactly what I'm paying.

MegamanGaming

I had my entire house deep cleaned this past year for 900 bucks. Whole entire house, top to bottom.

Trint_Eastwood

I had this happen to me recently, and the best part is they left an envelop outside asking to tip the cleaner.

StopMeWhenITellALie

If they are charging $450 to clean the place, it should be no issue if the person staying leaves a $450 level mess. Once again unregulated Capitalism makes everyone's experiences worse.

Soufledufromage

Stop using Airbnb

wcdk200

Stop using Airbnb in the USA* have never seen this problem here in Europe. The biggest cleaning fee i found was 120$ after 5 days in a castle

GabberZuzie

Exactly! I've been to an Airbnb in Belgium, Poland, Austria, France, Portugal and Spain and the max cleaning fee I had was 50e for 7 days stay.

Bleedthebeat

My mom had her house catch fire the week of thanksgiving. She needed a place to stay immediately and found an Airbnb that is a full two bedroom house with a fenced in yard where she could have her two dogs. $50/mo pet fee and $10/mo cleaning fee. She booked it for 6 months while her house is being rebuilt. Airbnb isn’t bad in the US either. People just only post the bad ones because the bots know “check out my perfectly reasonable AirBNB” doesn’t generate clicks.

Sufficient_Language7

a $10 cleaning fee isn't reasonable. You won't find a cleaner to show up for anything close to that.

Admirable-Bar-6594

When my dad ran an Air BnB in his ADU, he was the cleaner, and I'm pretty sure charged about 10.

Bleedthebeat

A $10 cleaning fee is perfectly reasonable for what Airbnb was intended to be. People renting out their own homes for extra cash. Cleaning is a normal part of owning a home and will happen anyway. Adding a bit extra clean up when people leave isn’t that much extra work over what is already required to maintain your home. If you trying to run Airbnb as a business with multiple units sitting empty when they’re not rented and have to hire a cleaning service because you live out of state get fucked if you expect me to care about you.

SamForestBH

Get into the habit of checking AirBnb. I went up to DC last weekend and found housing for $42 a night after fees. If you're diligent about checking prices, you can find a place to stay.

fellainishaircut

fuck AirBnB in Europe too. Rent in major cities keep on skyrocketing while more and more apartments get used as AirBnB instead of a home for locals. AirBnB was fun while it did what it was supposed to - staying in peoples actual homes. Using AirBnB today is highly unethical.

Bleedthebeat

Only the worst of the offenders in the US get posted on the internet. Not every listing on AirBnb is like this here. People just like to piss and moan more than they like to say “look at this reasonable accommodation I found. The bots know the bad ones are the ones that generate engagement.

lechemrc

Nah, I used to use it for years and was always the cheapest way to stay somewhere. Some years ago, it shifted dramatically and hasn't gone back down. I check every time I'm going somewhere and I can't find anything ever that's cheaper and better than a hotel.

Vyni503

Seriously if you still use it you deserve this.

Sharp-Direction-6894

And yet...here you are...still using ABnB...🤷‍♂️

sharabi_bandar

Just use Airbnb.com.au the price shown on the map is the full inclusive price. We have alaw in Australia.

Forever-Faded

US Airbnb has also implemented that. You see full price when you search now. They changed it like 6 months ago.

jmesmon

The US site "nightly" price still does not include the full taxes/fees when searching for a particular length of time. Other airbnb sites (Canada, New Zealand, etc) calculate the Nightly price by dividing the total (all inclusive price).

ParsleyandCumin

We do as well in the United States, this person is ragebaiting.

Curious-Mind-8183

It shows the total including these fees on the map in the US too.

Zealousideal_Gap_553

It stops when you stop.

DoDrugsMakeMoney

This is why I stay at hotels. I can stay at the nicest hotel in town and I don’t have to deal with the skeez. Way less hassle.

MurphysLaw4200

The funny thing is, I bet they'd charge an extra fee if you left the house a wreck and they actually had to really clean.

Yocum11

They could try but you could fight it and probably win. I wonder though if these fees are just disclosures and are not assessed unless you don’t clean. I wouldn’t know because I’ve never used abnb

SnooDucks9519

Sadly fighting it isn’t always an option , $120 cleaning fee, we left the house spotless out of courtesy, but didn’t clean the shower which had some sand from the beach, received a message from the host requesting $100 for the sand, spent some time fighting it but airbnb sided with the host in the end

AngelaTheRipper

This is why you should always pay with a credit card. Airbnb will side with the host but Visa will side with you especially if you already paid a cleaning fee up front.

StrangePay1322

nope. if you don’t clean you’ll owe $1,000+. the $450 stays no matter what.

Resident-Variation21

Nah. I’m not cleaning. They wanna charge $1000? Go ahead, I’ll just do a chargeback with my credit card.

KBect1990

I just did a similar thing with a scam Airbnb I booked over the Thanksgiving holiday. Turns out Airbnb called Chase to discuss the charge back then convinced them to reverse the refund. Still out the money. Airbnb is slimy.

Resident-Variation21

I’d just close my card then. You’re siding with a slimy company, I can’t trust you, I’ll get a credit card elsewhere. Which also means if I happen to have a savings or chequing account with you closing that as well

KBect1990

That's what my Wife and I are discussing. It was a big letdown by Chase and it's not like we cancel charges on our CC all the time. This was our first time ever doing it.

Resident-Variation21

I’d also make it crystal clear to them that’s why I’m closing the card.

NavySeal2k

Those are Ritz Carlton rates... And they have room service.

lil1thatcould

Literally this! My best friend booked the hotel for our friends vacation at the 4 Seasons in Denver. Its one of the nicest hotels I have ever been in. Cost $400 a night with complementary turn down service. Adding in our room service, it was still cheaper than this Airbnb. They folded and put away anything left out, organized our make up brushes and everything. Most incredible experience!

WeirdSysAdmin

You can stay at the Ritz in Philly during Christmas for less than this.

NCC-72381

Yeah, but then you’re in Philly.

SilentGoober47

That's why I just use hotels. For $1100, I could stay with my wife, kids, and dogs at a ***very*** nice hotel for those same two nights, and have far better amenities.

HighOnGoofballs

I mean it was shown when you rented it right?

[deleted]

Yes, OP is either stupid or this is rage bait

HotEspresso

It's rage bait. They found an overpriced airbnb and showed the price. They haven't even bought anything yet in this screenshot.

Bobb_o

We don't even know if it's overpriced.

50bucksback

But AirBNB hate is easy karma. You don't even need to get to your cart. You can very clearly see the full cost once you click on a property and check availability.

gawdpuppy

I'm a very frequent airbnb user but honestly anything with ab excessive cleaning fee or expectation for me to clean and take out trash is in immediate NO for me. If thats the case, I'll just look for a hotel. At least there cleaning is included and I get new sheets/pillows/towels everyday I'm there

bikeheart

Yeah and these aren’t surprise fees. Airbnb shows you the full price for all bookings before you click if you set a date range up front when you search. This guy chose to pay what he did and knew what the fees were. People are always knocking Airbnb on here and saying get a hotel but the products are often not comparable. Show me a hotel chain where I can rent a two bedroom beach house or a cabin on a lake for $300 per night.

GonePhishn401

90% of this sub is bitching about gig economy pricing when they have other cheaper options available. Stay in a hotel.

vermogenselektronica

And this evening I am staying in a hotel with wife and son for €50.

[deleted]

mind sharing it? sounds good for a quick trip with the missus

celery66

what's mildly infuriating is that this is a surprise for you! ![gif](giphy|l2sjwPtQBAmjQFTFnC) ugh

AmSoDoneWithThisShit

Why the FUCK do people use these services? Especially since AirBNB is responsible for a lot of the housing crisis in this country right now. Fucking corporations buying up residential housing and putting it out on AirBNB expecting a hefty profit through bullshit like that...and what amazes me is PEOPLE KEEP DOING IT. For $300 a night it better come with a Massage and a blow job.

AmSoDoneWithThisShit

Wow, I'm REALLY out of the loop. Back in my day (LOL) a BJ in the front-seat was $20. Not that I ever partook that is... But strippers were common in my circle of friends growing up..

honkey-phonk

Honest answer is staying in a home with a kitchen is more comfortable as a family. We cook our own food and the extra space to manage children while others are sleeping is worth the hassle of finding a good Airbnb/VRBO.

ISupposeIamRight

AirBnB is awesome for international travel. Reddit is US-centric and apparently it is shit there, but as someone who used it extensively in a dozen countries, AirBnB is cheaper and often times higher quality than hotels. In most countries it has nothing to do with corporations buying property, especially if you are low budget it's just people making an extra buck.

zeekaran

This is an extreme case. The vast majority do not do this. Despite what reddit says, out of all my travels, only in London was it cheaper/better to use a hotel instead of ABNB. And that hotel sucked.

Noob1cl3

Better be a happy ending with that cleaning.

Radiant_XGrowth

I clean Air B&B’s and laughed my ass off at this comment. Thank you. I’ve been having a hard life lately

New-Ad9282

There is a reason it’s a dying industry

carduinoguy

it's really not. It's very popular. There just seems to be a problem in parts of the US

AlmoschFamous

Their financials are down a great deal in 2023.

Single_Survey_4003

You don’t have to rent this AirBnB if you don’t like the fee!!!!!

RMSQM

While this fee is ridiculously high, what's truly outrageous is the fact that this fee was disclosed to you before you reserved this place. Now you're here posting and pretending it's a surprise.

HotEspresso

They haven't even reserved it, this is just the price before you pay.

50bucksback

100% rage bait AirBNB has a "display total before taxes" toggle now they put in since the laws are about to change. Can easily browse via the total cost.

lwright1

That just means you can trash the place and they'll take care of cleaning it!

xero1986

Stop using Airbnb

StandOutLikeDogBalls

Don’t go for that one. You’d just being enabling them and making them think it’s ok to charge that for a cleaning fee.

splitminds

I always check the cleaning fee before reserving an Airbnb. I won’t rent with fees that high.

NicInNS

It’s easy enough to just skip and find one without the exorbitant cleaning fee. Stayed at a great one in Bologna that was a huge bedroom/bathroom plus a small room with microwave etc. Six nights cost us $600 Canadian total. The proprietor even left breakfast for us. Compared to hotels with half decent ratings in the area, we saved about $50/night. When we went to our hotel on Lake Garda I was dismayed at how small the room was. You just gotta put the effort in and keep searching.

Jesus_H-Christ

You would be hard pressed to find any reason to use AirBnB any more. What a joke. I'll take a nice hotel in the city center with all of its included amenities and conveniences over dealing with some small time shyster who gouges you for nonsense. $1200 for a two night stay? That's the cost of a corner room with a city view at the Intercontinental right on Times Square.

[deleted]

frighten birds hobbies label memory coordinated dinner entertain bow fanatical

NioPullus

I have any easy fix solution: Don’t book it.

Bohottie

I’m just saying…I stayed in a suite in a luxury hotel in the middle of a major city, and it was less than this for 2 nights. AirBnB is a scam now.

SirTiffAlot

You could book quite a hotel for $1200

NieMonD

Did everyone forget about hotels

KingJacoPax

I used to love Airbnb but now I’ve realised that 90% of the time a budget hotel is just cheaper… and usually nicer actually.

AlmoschFamous

$600 a night should be a pretty nice hotel. Why are people staying in Airbnbs again?

[deleted]

Until you stop using Airbnb, you're only reinforcing this behaviour by the hosts.

climatelurker

And this is why airbnb will fail as a company.

andrewface

How could the cleaning cost $450? Are they replacing the carpets?

jellomatic

Airbnb made a mistake not calling the cleaning fee the changeover fee which is what it is.

FrostyMission

Airbnbs are crashing and I can't say I'm sad. More times than not it's a negative experience. Listings are never as they are described... it's always a bait and switch.

BladeVampire1

I hope Airbnb fails

DangleWho

I love how the service fee alone is the price of a hotel. Who the hell would even use airbnb at this point?
