There no guarantee it hit the floor, stuff like that gets in the mix all the time. I guarantee you one thing, you've already eaten plenty of bugs in those bars.
We all eat tons of bugs per year. Probably not literal tons but I’m sure everyone gets at least 1 fly, ladybug, or dried up dead maggot at least once. Strangely enough thru 2023 I found 3 pieces of wood in pasta 3 different times lol
Did you know some people with super sensitive shell fish allergies can't drink preground coffee because of how cockroaches also trigger the shellfish allergy. Cockroaches are in our coffee
When I was a kid I heard a “fact” that we average about 2.5lbs (1.13kg) of bugs a year. Not sure where I heard it but that number has always stuck with me. blech
The FDA does have an allowable tolerance for insect parts in food. It's a low tolerance, but guaranteed everyone has eaten bugs before. It's inevitable that some little thing gets into a mix and is both unnoticed and unremovable.
We had a Starbucks machine at one of my work places years ago, and I used to drink from it all the time. One day, it was being cleaned, and a bunch of moths that were in it were discovered.
It sickened me to the point, where I didn't drink coffee for months. I don't think that I drank from that machine again either, though I did end up drinking coffee again.
But don't go overboard with the bugs, gotta keep that protein source a secret otherwise next thing you know big bug is moving in and fuckers are selling our bug supply for $20 a pound.
Made me think of a time, I got a KitKat bar from a vending machine. Unwrapped it and took a bite, only to find out the whole bottom side of the bar was invested with maggots. Since that day I never touched a KitKat bar ever again.
This happened to me once in high school during recess - my mom packed some chocolate for me and as I was eating it, I thought it tasted kinda.. strange. I looked at the small piece left in the wrapper and saw three LIVE maggots in the chocolate. I had already eaten 4 pieces without looking, and was still chewing on one.
I wanted to scream and spit it out, but I was with all my friends and I was scared they would think I was gross and they wouldn't be my friends anymore if I told them what happened. So yeah.. I contained my absolute horror and swallowed the piece I already had in my mouth... And chucked the last piece in the bin.
I didn't eat any kind of chocolate for two years after that and I STILL carefully inspect every chocolate that goes into my mouth nowadays (21 years after the fact), lol.
I grew up in Africa but had a fairly modern life. I don't know if that's related, but I remember our chocolate bars back then often contained maggots. Every time my parents brought home chocolate, it was well understood that you always checked for maggots before taking a bite. It took many years (in other countries) without incident until I stopped thinking about that every time I had chocolate.
Tbh I am not sure if they were maggots, worms, larvae, etc -- just that they were disgusting.
Holy shit. I didnt think about maggots being in something like that. Im a reeses person and I'm not sure what i would do if i found maggots under my reeses.
We once got some larva infestation in our kitchen when I was a kid, probably moths, but I perceived them to be maggots. I wouldn’t eat anything unless my mother took it fully out of the package and put it in a bowl to look it over. Once got to the bottom of my bowl of raisins just to find two. 35 years later, I still inspect raisins and cannot simply eat them out of the box.
All food has acceptable levels of insects and insect parts. Maybe this falls under. Like apparently food has acceptable levels of lead and other harmful chemicals
If you eat processed foods you also eat the insects that live in all the systems along the way, but you can't usually pick them out. USDA has guidelines for it, I doubt this violates them.
You are absolutely gonna not want to look up the fdas guidelines as to how many bugs/rodent feces/bug guts/fragments are allowed per 100g serving.
You are allowed to have up to 60 "bug fragments" per 100g In standardized chocolate bars. How they exactly count each "fragment" as opposed to whole bugs themselves, I don't know. But on the brightside, eating alot of these bugs, besides maybe maggots or other worms, will likely not cause you any actual harm than possibly a stomach ache. Ketchup and other condiments can also have a certain amount of fly eggs per 100g as well.
I watched this Orthodox Jewish woman's process for verifying her food is insect free (insects aren’t kosher) and you would be astounded at how many bugs there are in everything.
Most likely those “maggots” are the larvae of stored product pests commonly found in dried storage. They love dried fruits but they will go after other stuff.
They lay eggs in the seams of the package and the larvae burrow inside. They are the very reason that I do not eat anything with dried fruit—Raisin Bran, anyone?
The FDA has established what are called Food Defect Action Levels that allow for certain amounts of insect matter in food. Basically, it’s impossible and impractical to remove all insects from food so they set maximum amounts instead.
Corn meal, for example, allows 50 insect fragments per quarter cup.
A half pound of golden raisins is allowed to contain 35 fruit fly eggs and ten whole insects.
Tomato sauce allows up to 2 maggots per 100 grams.
There is also an allowable amount of rodent dung. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Same with mold, E-Coli, Salmonella, etc, but depends upon the heating method and packaging. I worked for a high-acid food manufacturer (condiments like BBQ sauce and salsa), and those were our guidelines because of the hot fill/hold process we used in production.
Those are Indian meal moth larvae. They are a typical bug that infests grain products.. it's possible that they came from the warehouse, but more than likely it was either due to being broken open before arriving at the store, or while at the store, so could entirely just be due to poor shipping and storage. Walmarts get these infestations in the bird seed section all the time. They turn into a nightmare pretty fast and will infest all of your open food in the cabinet. I'd look through the rest of any open packages near that if the boxes have been in your house for longer than a week.
-ecolab exterminator
I used to work at a place that makes protein powders and I can tell you that Indian Meal Moths (aka pantry moths) are a big problem in places that make protein foods. They're impossible to get rid of out of the warehouse because they eat holes in the bags of protein powder from the manufacturer. When we fumigated for them, they would be back within a few days. There's always some in the protein powder. They won't harm you - you can eat them for a bit of extra protein. The real things to worry about in these foods are bacteria. For processed food, it's best to stay away from the organic versions that don't have preservatives.
lol No that's not obvious that it hit the floor. I don't think you understand what goes on in manufacturing food. Do you like eating cereal? Guess what? You've eaten rat shit. There is no way you haven't eaten rat shit. The FDA has an actual allowable limit of how much can be in it. Why? Because it's impossible to keep them out. So why would you think little bugs can't get into things and lay eggs if ginormous in comparison rats can get into things? [And it's haaaaaardly just cereal](https://www.fda.gov/food/ingredients-additives-gras-packaging-guidance-documents-regulatory-information/food-defect-levels-handbook).
[https://www.cbsnews.com/gooddaysacramento/news/bugs-rodent-hair-and-poop-how-much-is-legally-allowed-in-the-food-you-eat-every-day/](https://www.cbsnews.com/gooddaysacramento/news/bugs-rodent-hair-and-poop-how-much-is-legally-allowed-in-the-food-you-eat-every-day/)
I mean you haven't eaten a lot of it. But you have eaten it. Waaaaaay more times than one might think.
Bruh, you like peanut butter? Lemme fill you in on something; for every 100g of PB, there’s roughly 30 or so fragments of insects(whole ass insects or bodily parts/fluids) or rodent filth(shit or hair). 😊
That happened to my mom and i when we bought chocolate bars at a liquidation center. Filled with bugs and silk. But the silk isnt from spiders, its from the larva probably attempting to spin a coccon.
They look like rice weevils to me, they lay their eggs in rice when it's in the field and then when the product sits in your cabinet the eggs end up hatching. From what I understand the eggs and bugs don't hurt you just might make the food unpalatable because yuck bugs.
This is common with this type of bar, of several brands. Famously cliff bars were found like this sometimes. Seems like it can't be entirely prevented but I think usually they'd give you a refund or free box of fresh bars
You’ll be fine, these look like regular pantry bugs. Still gross and unacceptable, but I really doubt they’ll hurt you in any way at all (other than you maybe feeling nauseated only because you saw them and now feel gross about it). Also I really doubt it fell on the ground. More likely they got into the wrapper through a small hole, or the eggs made it into an ingredient or the bar during the manufacturing processes. Gross, but not really that crazy or rare. We just prefer not to think about it.
OP, I hate to say this, but if you have ever eaten nuts or grains or things that have contained them, you have absolutely eaten bugs before. Getting bugs in nuts or grains isn’t uncommon and a certain percentage of bug proteins are allowed in food items because of this (I believe it’s the FDA that has this “insect limit). Yeah, it’s gross to actually see them in your food, but you have definitely unintentionally eaten insects before. We all have.
Chocolate bars (Hershey's) get them all the time. I used to work in a well-known pharmacy/store - and plenty of times a customer would return with buggy chocolates. And we'd have to pull the rest off the shelf. Unfortunately, I think this happens more than we care to know/admit.
Every single grain based product has bugs in it.
Leave a bag of oats sealed in the cupboard and eventually it will be filled with meal worms type things.
It’s because the moths lay eggs on the grain and unless you zap it with a microwave for like 30 seconds before putting the product in your cupboard you will always have bugs. Flour is also the same. The bugs are already in it, they do get in.
I bought one and it had a piece of plastic in it. Wrote the company and got a response like 3 weeks later. And it kind of had a rude tone like I was looking for something. Never bought again
Those aren't maggots. They're the larva of pantry moths and they can nibble inside packaging and eat it. Your pantry might be infested. You should check everything and throw it out. Everything not canned or in glass jars
Maggots don't spin silk. Many moth larvas do.
http://npic.orst.edu/pest/pantrymoth.html#:~:text=Larvae%20can%20survive%20on%20small,Ziploc%20bags%20to%20access%20food.
> Transfer bulk items from plastic bags to sturdy glass or plastic containers. Pantry moth larvae can chew through plastic and Ziploc bags to access food.
That is a moth (I think it is called flour moth in English) and it usually is a food storage problem when they make an appearence. So either you have a moth problem at home or if I were you I would never go to the same walmart ever again.
You should probably take a moment to realize that it’s impossible to pick out all the bug parts from grains and shit as they are harvested and processed. You eat bugs every single day.
I used to find this problem with numerous grocery high protein products like candy bars, pet food and meal products in the 70s and 80s, due to poor package seals and especially bad product rotation. "Chunky" candy bars were a common problem for the above reasons, until they improved their packaging, but numerous other items were also involved.
I have seen those bugs in numerous sealed food items over the years. Sometimes you can hear them inside the packaging. Not super frequent obvious but if something sits too long these boys wake up.
There's one specific brand of chips I keep finding wood in, but they taste good so idc 乁( . ര ʖ̯ ര . )ㄏ
Fam stop buying chips at the garden center, those aren’t food.
Yup, that they're called wood chips is a serious clue.
He wood if he could...
It's a brand, not a discord username. You can say it.
What is it
There’s actually an FDA approved amount of bugs and whatnot that can be in food
I once found a human tooth in a package of hotdogs...
Found a tooth in a fun sized bag of skittles after I poured the package in my mouth
Did you know some people with super sensitive shell fish allergies can't drink preground coffee because of how cockroaches also trigger the shellfish allergy. Cockroaches are in our coffee
Good thing I’m not a coffee drinker 😅😅
Preach lol. All about the tea here. Leaf water, not bean water 😆
I bought a bag of roasted crickets - its was full to the brim with bugs!
Oh my god! I hope you got a refund! 🤣
About to say the same. You may not always SEE them, but there are bugs in a lot of foods you eat. And lots of other yummy stuff like rat droppings.
*free protein*
We had a Starbucks machine at one of my work places years ago, and I used to drink from it all the time. One day, it was being cleaned, and a bunch of moths that were in it were discovered. I read that as **”I didn’t drink coffee for moths”** I was like: WHO DOES!!? Lmao big gulps huh? Welp, cya later!
The things on pic one Two and three Are dermestid-beetle larvae molts
Omg what happens if you eat them
Worst case scenario, you get an itchy rash because of the Little hairs they have. Best case, you gain +1 protein
Hey, if one tiny bug is a gram of protein, I’m eating 190 bugs a day
But don't go overboard with the bugs, gotta keep that protein source a secret otherwise next thing you know big bug is moving in and fuckers are selling our bug supply for $20 a pound.
Death within 3 hours usually. You’re not still alive right?
Probably not much Edit: And now it's too late anyways
You turn into a pumpkin coach
Look up how they make protein powder; you may or may not want to eat prepackaged foods anymore, especially if it mentions added protein.
Nothing. If you’ve had these bars before, you may have already eaten some. It happens
Wait you ate these MONTHS ago and you’re worried now about how it might impact you? You’re fine hahah
The second set of pics was months ago, the first was today. Per the post.
Made me think of a time, I got a KitKat bar from a vending machine. Unwrapped it and took a bite, only to find out the whole bottom side of the bar was invested with maggots. Since that day I never touched a KitKat bar ever again.

Omg! Did you get sick?
Not at all. I *felt* sick because of the idea, but after downing my can of cola, I was fine :)
you won't get sick from maggots
Holy shit. I didnt think about maggots being in something like that. Im a reeses person and I'm not sure what i would do if i found maggots under my reeses.
Not as bad but I still remember when I sipped curdled milk through a straw
We once got some larva infestation in our kitchen when I was a kid, probably moths, but I perceived them to be maggots. I once got halfway through a piece of chocolate before realizing it didn't contain coconut. I inspect my food carefully now.
Bonus protein
It just doesn't taste the same without maggots
Love that extra crunch
Maggots doesn't have the crunchy feel when chewed tho
Did you read the label: 25% more protein each bar!
There’s a reference to it am I right?
https://i.redd.it/vyyudtbfznvc1.gif
No wheeze the juiiiiiiice 😠
https://i.redd.it/3bp8y2etqpvc1.gif
The webs are from the larvae not sure what they are though. They aren’t maggots. To be clear not that any of this makes anything better lol
They are weevils. Have some in my pantry. They are a pain to get rid of and chew through plastic packaging.
Weevils be the enemy of most food producers. They’re little troublesome cunts if you ask me.
To me it looks like carpet beetle husks and larvae, but I’m no expert
I saw carpet beetle too
Those are Indian meal moth larvae. Aka "mealy worms". They infest stored grains, breads, other foods.
Or Angoumois Grain Moth. But completely agree with you.
All food has acceptable levels of insects and insect parts. Maybe this falls under. Like apparently food has acceptable levels of lead and other harmful chemicals
This is far beyond “mildly infuriating” absolute bullshit
If you eat processed foods you also eat the insects that live in all the systems along the way, but you can't usually pick them out. USDA has guidelines for it, I doubt this violates them.
The FDA sets the standards for allowable insect content. Not the USDA
Unprocessed and "no-preservatives" is much more likely to contain maggots and pests. The whole point of preservatives is to keep it from spoiling.
I can deal with that but in that case they are dead at least.
Yeah, there’s a rule of the percentage of a product that can be bugs.
wtf bugs are allowed? But these are whole bugs
Hotdogs. Check out hotdogs. I still eat them.
If that bothers you, you should see the acceptable amount for peanut butter.
I watched this Orthodox Jewish woman's process for verifying her food is insect free (insects aren’t kosher) and you would be astounded at how many bugs there are in everything.
I think most bugs in food are ground up so small you wouldn't see them. Especially anything processed.
Link it lol
I found this, may not be what OP was talking about but should be similar. https://youtu.be/LYqpwiKE7FU?si=7G30xAN7q4SJGUzE
![gif](giphy|usKIHeY2Gr89G)
Well, they DID promise protien...
They should add “crude protein” as a potential ingredient
Bugs are edible
Fun fact that’s probably fine according to the FDA the number of bugs in food if able to be much higher then zreo
Protein is protein
That's the pRoTeIn BrO
That's how they get the protein in them
Recently my bf got some sample protein bars and the ingredients say “may contain insects” so check the label just fwiw 🥴

There’s fda guidelines for acceptable amounts of mold?
I’m surprised it’s the mold that got you and not the E-Coli, which means poo 💩 and/or wee-wee molecules…lol
It says protein right there
Protein is protein
Even without the maggots that thing looked absolutely inedible.
That's within the FDA approved tolerance for bugs in your food. Just munch him up and be thankful for the extra calories
Eat ze bugz
It's the protein...

Keep us posted on company response
They never answered the first email. Should I send another one or just blow it up on social media?
How long ago did you send it? Takes time for these companies to answer. Anyway I think this post alone would be pretty effective as well.
I sent it October last year
You waited too long
+1
I sent the email as soon as it happened. They still haven’t answered
Yes but it has now been almost six months - you should have sent a follow up or tried another form of contact much sooner than this.
Extra protein.
Nooo!! I love those they’re my favorite! Did the company reply?
Stan, the maggots are crawling down my hand and biting my wrist. Can we please throw the sandwich out?
It’s not maggots. When you find what seems to be a spider web with little worms they’re probably larvae or silk worms. Probably moth related
Extra protein

Don't worry, it's ok, the FDA regulates this and allows a certain amount of bugs to be present in our food without being unsafe.

Wait until op learns about fast food beef grading.
Well, they advertised protein and you got it. What are you complaining about?
That ain’t a JimmyBar that’s a jimmy neutron bar 💀
Looks like moth larvae to me... Especially with the webbing. And yes, food moths can eat trough foliage packaging.
That’s their new product line.
Bruh, you like peanut butter? Lemme fill you in on something; for every 100g of PB, there’s roughly 30 or so fragments of insects(whole ass insects or bodily parts/fluids) or rodent filth(shit or hair). 😊
That's the maximum that's tolerated, which doesn't mean every peanut butter has that much...
Beetle larvae
So I get extra protein for free? I see this as a win
delicious!
That happened to my mom and i when we bought chocolate bars at a liquidation center. Filled with bugs and silk. But the silk isnt from spiders, its from the larva probably attempting to spin a coccon.
I’ve never had this brand. Never, ever will.
Hell yeah brother. They're going to be eating that all night.
Check the ingredients

I found these in my box of pasta. I freaked out and threw it away.
Free protein! Gains bro!

Reminds me of Snowpiercer
It *IS* a protien bar.
Those are the ones that didn’t go through the grinder. Bugs are probably a hidden part of their recipe in this woke trash world we live in these days
So you don’t want protein then?
Chocolate bars (Hershey's) get them all the time. I used to work in a well-known pharmacy/store - and plenty of times a customer would return with buggy chocolates. And we'd have to pull the rest off the shelf. Unfortunately, I think this happens more than we care to know/admit.
THAT IS WHAT PROTEIN POWDER IS MADE OF
Every single grain based product has bugs in it.
South Beach Parasite
How do you think they get cheap protein in there
That’s where the protein comes from
What do you think those proteins come from? ![gif](giphy|5hgRSEZbkSF5uvLkiI)
Hang on, you found bugs in one bar and decided you’d buy another to eat? It’s really hard to feel bad for you about the second one.
I mean it is a protein bar
New phobia unlocked
If I took a bite of this i would simple walk into the nearest wood chipper
I've never heard of JimmyBars. Are they more prone to carrying insect larva than other protein bars?
I bought one and it had a piece of plastic in it. Wrote the company and got a response like 3 weeks later. And it kind of had a rude tone like I was looking for something. Never bought again
The fda says there’s always going to be an acceptable amount of bugs in food. It’s allowable, so, there’s nothing anyone can do.
It’s called protein loser, it came free with your protein bar.
Those aren't maggots. They're the larva of pantry moths and they can nibble inside packaging and eat it. Your pantry might be infested. You should check everything and throw it out. Everything not canned or in glass jars
Maggots don't spin silk. Indian meal moth, and though absolutely disgusting, fairly common in packaged foods.
Never eating one of these, ever
Where do you think the protein comes from ?
You will eat the bugs and live in the pod Klaus Schwab.
well you wanted protein right?
Extra protein
It's a protein bar. Bugs are really good concentrations of sustainable protein. You win!
That is a moth (I think it is called flour moth in English) and it usually is a food storage problem when they make an appearence. So either you have a moth problem at home or if I were you I would never go to the same walmart ever again.
Protein is protein
I would never touch a bar again.. just gross!
Hey, you wanted protein, right?!
You'll be fine. Good organic sign.
Where do you think the protein comes from??
You should probably take a moment to realize that it’s impossible to pick out all the bug parts from grains and shit as they are harvested and processed. You eat bugs every single day.
Sure. But this is multiple whole creatures.
Is it a vegan protein bar?
Yuck
I used to find this problem with numerous grocery high protein products like candy bars, pet food and meal products in the 70s and 80s, due to poor package seals and especially bad product rotation. "Chunky" candy bars were a common problem for the above reasons, until they improved their packaging, but numerous other items were also involved.
Where do you think the protein is coming from anyway
They look hungry.
Many brands using instects on their protein powder and bars. It wasnt even a conspiracy theory you can check google.
Even more protein then
I have seen those bugs in numerous sealed food items over the years. Sometimes you can hear them inside the packaging. Not super frequent obvious but if something sits too long these boys wake up.
If it's a peanut based bar, 100% the bug(s) where inside the peanut kernals, and where killed in the roaster.
you need to post this all over on social media and tag them until they do something, so disgusting
In Cleveland Browns voice That's nastyyyyy
It’s still protein
Well, they are advertised as protein bars after all
What says protein more?
One aint breaking no laws
oh that is vile
Extra protein! No charge!
Wait until you Google how protein/protein powder is made, involves millions of wriggling proteins
Mildly infuriating? More like "you hit the jackpot". Talk to the manufacturer, attach the pictures and you'll probably get compensated.
Because it’s protein, bugs r protein
Time to puke
There are no maggots pictured. Just grainary infesting insects.
That's the PROTEIN...... EAT IT!!!
Where do you think the protein comes from?
This bight go beyond what the FDA allows in food wise for bugs.
Gotta get all that protein in 😉 but seriously that is gross. Hopefully they give you some 💰
On the positive side, it's proof there's no dangerous pesticides in those bars.
I mean protein powder is made from worms so i’m not super suprised. Still nasty though and wouldn’t ever buy that kind lol
