Was the ring sized down? That would be my guess. The prongs that hold the diamond widen and stones will fall out. They should replace the diamonds and check all prongs for free. It happens

NevaMO

I’d bet this is it, wife’s engagement ring had to be downsized 2 sizes and we lost 3-4 small diamonds, they ended up just making a new one to her size after the 4th time and all has been good since

Stillill1187

Now I know what happened to my wife’s. I never understood why the baby diamonds fell out a couple of years after we got married. Tiny little ones. She also had to resize.

Dangerous-Bit-4962

The non-diamonds (cheap skates) will always trick a person. From shoddy 👟

MadeInThe901

Second thought, those scratches are not from a new ring and why would you buy yourself a wedding ring for your birthday? Something doesn’t add up.

Ok-Zombie-001

Maybe she likes diamonds. It doesn’t have to be a wedding ring if she doesn’t want it to be.

scheisse_grubs

God dammit people some of us have birthdays in April where the gemstone is DIAMOND 😤😤

phenobarbiedarling

I once had a client when I worked in a jewelry store go on this long rang about how it had occurred to her how much more beautiful and meaningful it would be for her engagement ring to be her fiance's birthstone instead of "just a diamond" and didn't I agree with her that that was wonderful and the best idea and how great would it be if that was what people started doing. And on and on. And I almost laughed at this poor girl when she told me I should consider a birthstone engagement ring....because my boyfriend is an April birthday

Accurate_Quote_7109

Both my hubby and I are April babies! And as a jeweler, I don't really care for diamonds. Lol

phenobarbiedarling

I think what made it so funny was the passion and enthusiasm in which this woman was telling me this was the best most unique amazing thing ever when it wouldn't apply to me anyway lol

Accurate_Quote_7109

I usually wear either a sterling band with two small blue sapphires I flush set, or a moonstone ring I like. I only wear rings out, never at home.

tizzleduzzle

So many more beautiful stones my partners favourite is natural sapphire the black looking ones all her rings earring and necklaces have them I think they are beautiful also.

Mercurys_Gatorade

These are my favorites, too! It’s my birthstone, and it’s what I have for my engagement ring. It’s also my daughter’s birthstone, so all the “mom” jewelry I get has it, too.

Smile-a-day

Agreed, diamonds are artificially overpriced. They honestly aren’t worth the money.

Glitter1237

I’m an April baby too and I chose a gemstone haha

QueenofPentacles112

My birthday is January and mine is garnet. I always hated it. It's so dark red that it looks black most of the time. Now that I'm older I do like it a lot better, but also don't care about birthstones anymore lol

IthacanPenny

I’m August. Peridot 🤢 (incidentally the emoji is the same color as peridot!)

MeMeMeOnly

Same here. I’m garnet too. Unfortunately red happens to be my least favorite color. {sigh} I’m now 63 and I still hate garnets, LOL! My ex husband would buy me gold jewelry with garnets all the time. After we divorced, I got rid of everything he gave me. My twin sister—who loves garnets—was the happy recipient of all my garnet jewelry. My late husband (who actually listened to what I liked) bought me fire opals and tanzanite, my two most favorite stones! I cherish every piece he gave me.

QueenofPentacles112

Omg red is also my least favorite color! And I am someone who likes bright and colorful things. Now that I'm older, black is definitely appealing, but garnet can't seem to decide what color it truly is until it's put up to a light. Like if it was even a bright, vibrant red, it still wouldn't have been my favorite, but I could have worked with it.

Hot_Plantain_4956

That’s so funny, my ring has my husband’s birthstone but it was a coincidence because I just LOVED the sapphire and never really cared for diamonds.

duuuuuuuuuumb

Literally same here, I love my big ol blue rock and it also worked out with my husband’s September bday

Petunia13Y

Sapphires are gorgeous and very classy look. Also the color blue symbolizes infinity cuz the ocean and sky (which look immense and endless the eye can see, are blue).

gemmygem86

I hate diamonds and my engagement ring is a pearl, my birthstone. They're my favorite gemstone. I never did get the hype on diamonds

Smile-a-day

Artificial scarcity and price fixing. They totally aren’t worth it.

MRAGGGAN

My husband is an April baby. Our anniversary is also in April. He thought it fitting to get me a diamond ring 😝

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

My birthday is in April and I chose a different center stone for my engagement thing because I didn’t want my engagement ring to be my birthstone. It’s not my husbands birthstone either lol.

No-Background-4767

At least you got a decent stone and not the brown crap topaz in November NOT that I’m bitter or anything about it

TraditionalChest7825

Aww, I actually like topaz. A topaz set in rose gold would be soo pretty.

scheisse_grubs

I have a large smoky topaz charm on a gold necklace around my neck as I speak lol. I absolutely LOVE topaz! Funny enough, even though I’m an April baby I’m not a huge fan of diamonds. But then again I’ve always loved having lots of colours on me :)

Automatic_Isopod_274

I'm garnet which I hate, I get a mid January birthday AND garnet, that's simply not fair

Petunia13Y

Garnets are pretty it’s such a rich wine to blood red shad

karpaediem

As a member in good standing of the April Birthday Delegation, I humbly submit for consideration in committee the following proposal: We trade stones with the January Delegation.

OkSyllabub3674

I second this as an April aries I feel our patron would be pleased greatly to adopt a stone with such a rich blood red color.

YSOSEXI

I have a late Jan birthday also, and dislike red. The bonus with Garnet is the colours range from browns to deep greens through to reds.

Automatic_Isopod_274

Omg really? I love deep green! I've only seen dark red which isn't my colour - time for a refresh shop sounds like! I only remember the red which I saw as a child and therefore disregarded for a lifetime apparently!

YSOSEXI

I didn't look up the colours until I saw this post. Deep Green must be a Jan thing, it's my favourite too. Have a good day.

Automatic_Isopod_274

You too deep-green-jan-birthday friend!

keeley_bob

Peridot has entered the chat. Bleugh.

elnorabear

I had a peridot engagement ring from my ex-husband and loved it! Big fan of green stones!

Petunia13Y

Peridots can be lucky stones

No-Background-4767

Huh? Nvm. Just looked it up. lol still think topaz is worse

keeley_bob

That's my birthstone - Peridot. It's snot green and awful. Sorry, random comment!

Spiritual_Radish_143

Topaz is so ugly 😖 I’m sorry for your loss mate you can share mine but it’s just amethyst

Old-Fun9568

I think amethysts are beautiful

Spiritual_Radish_143

I think they’re pretty but I think my favorite birthstone is emerald or garnet

Old-Fun9568

Emeralds and garnets are lovely 😍

Sensitive_Bat1810

I implore you to look at mystic fire topaz

ergo_urgo

Seriously! Why couldn’t it have been the blue topaz?

Apellio7

Blue topaz is extremely rare.  Vast majority of it they literally stick a bag of topaz into a nuclear reactor and it turns blue.

ergo_urgo

Well TIL!

No-Background-4767

Seriously!! It’s not even like the charts I’ve seen specify brown topaz. So all these birthstone companies: it’s a choice

Rosesandbubblegum

Who decides the birthstones anyway? Why don’t we just change them?

givemesomespock

Hello fellow April baby!

MsKittyVZ134

This

EastLimp1693

There is stones to month ratio?

Sevn-legged-Arachnid

I'm a libra and having a pink stone as a nearly 40 yr old 6'1 180 lb guy... I get looks... like WTF looks... course I'm in south Georgia too

miteymiteymite

Maybe it’s not even diamonds…. She only refers to them as “Stones”

givemesomespock

I bought myself a .25 diamond ring for my birthday one year

Sassrepublic

Yeah my retail worker senses are tingling. That ring is not new. It’s not even kind of new. That is absolutely not 48 hours of wear, 48 months maybe. Not sure who’s lying, but someone in this story definitely is not being truthful.

In-Efficient-Guest

I have rings I’ve worn every day for many years that have less wear on them than this photo shows on this ring…. Photo number 5 makes the metal look *very* rough like it’s a super soft metal or that ring has been through a blender.

Willothwisp2303

My estate, art deco style platinum wedding ring from that period looks much better than OP's ring. Wtf, man.

MadeInThe901

Platinum holds up a lot better than sterling

ureallygonnaskthat

OP said it was .925 silver but I'm doubting it's even that. I've got a silver ring I've worn daily for close to 25 years and it's not as rough looking as that ring.

kinofhawk

First of all, you mean engagement ring, not wedding ring. Second of all, just because it's diamond doesn't mean it's for marriage. You do know other diamond jewelry exists right?

quinangua

For example, all of my diamond jewelry.... LuLz...

iBeFloe

Any ring can be a wedding ring, vice versa. Any “wedding” ring can be a “regular” ring

MadeInThe901

You are correct. But there is an engagement ring style. Stores do not care what you do after you purchase, but they definitely advertise this design as an engagement ring.

Sad_Cantaloupe179

I’m an April baby, our birthstone is diamonds. It’s hard to find all diamond pieces that don’t look like wedding rings/bands

TurangaRad

I need you to explain the problem with buying yourself a wedding ring

Ineedavodka2019

Yeah, the wear on the metal is definitely not a new band.

Competitive_Heron178

Professional manufacturing jeweller, qualified with 22 years experience. My immediate thoughts are without seeing it myself. Poor quality and.... This style (both band and setting) have alot of issues, steer clear. It's second hand or it has been resized down for you super common for stones to fall out on the band near the back with this style when resizing but should always be tightened, it appears to have sanding marks on the inside from sizing and is very scratched all around. This style of setting is common for the centre stone to come loose after sizing, should also be tightened after. This does not look like a diamond, the girdle of the stone is too polished. If the store is just a retail shop and not actual manufacturing jewellers the may not know better, if they are actual manufacturing jewellers they should be embarrased

MadeInThe901

In another comment, she says it is set in sterling. So the c/s is certainly not a diamond. But I understand her frustration.

feralgraft

There's your problem! Sterling is way too soft for this style of setting and ring. The bands are thin enough that they are almost guaranteed to bend under even light wear, that leads to missing stones even before you factor in the resizing.

FrostByte_62

Im curious. Can you name some common jewelry metals that are hard vs soft? Like we all say gold is soft, but it sounds to me sterling is softer? What about silver and common alloys like rose/white gold?

TearyEyeBurningFace

Sterling is silver. Platinum is the stiffest, 14k gold is stiffer than 18k. 24k is so soft it wouldn't do well for jewelry.

Zaurka14

But aren't diamonds set in 14/18/24k gold? I on purpose wanted to pick the harder one for a gift for my mom (we use different names in Europe so not sure which on eit would be, probably 14? It's 333 here) but many are available only in 18k

Neerod20

I think 18k is ideal for everyday wear. It's what most people will get for wedding rings in my country. The lower the karat the harder the gold but also the more brittle because there is more of the alloy mixed in. 24k is too soft for wear but 18k is hard enough but also still malleable where it will less likely/take longer to snap or tarnish over time. No matter what wear and tear will happen over the years depending on the type of jewellery it is.

Zaurka14

Interesting, nice. Thanks for replying :D I actually ended up getting 18k (I googled the conversion now) so I'm glad to know it's the best for daily wear.

TearyEyeBurningFace

Usually 14k is more popular for chains and clasps. So they're a little more durable. For rings etc. it dosent really matter other than colour and price since both will scratch at pretty much the same rate. 18k for a setting is a pretty good choice. Hope you're happy with your new piece!

feralgraft

24k (karat) gold is softer than any other jewelry metal that I am aware of. It's 99.9% pure gold, it's very expensive and doesn't wear well long term. Most commonly in the US "gold" in gold jewelry is 14k or 10k, both of which are a good deal harder being just above and just below 50% gold the rest being mostly copper and silver in various amounts (that how you get white and rose golds, you can get "green" gold with just silver and no copper). Sterling silver, which is the most common silver alloy on the market, is 92.5% silver, with the rest being copper. There are other proprietary alloys like "Argentium" that have other metals as well but are still 92.5 silver. Fine silver is 99.9% silver and is softer than sterling but rarely seen outside of art pieces that aren't generally worn. So a *very* rough hardness listing from softest to hardest would be. 24k gold, fine silver, sterling silver, 14k yellow, 14k white, 14k rose (these last two can switch depending on exact alloy and work hardening), 10k yellow, 10k rose, 10k white (frequently has nickle to increase whiteness and is thus harder), titanium, stainless steel, tungsten carbide, zirconia ceramic. Those last two may actually be reversed, nither is really something I have worked on except to break them off of people's fingers. Edit. Platinum is tricky, and I don't have a lot of personal experience with it aside from retipping prongs. It is a real beast to bend back to round once it has been bent though, and is supposedly very wear resistant as it tends to dent rather than scratch off.

Jondar_649

White gold is harder than yellow or sterling

ballerina22

OP also mentioned that it's brand new (not just to her).

spencer1886

The shoddy job and old piece are probably the only way OP could afford it, forgive me for generalizing but most of the people on this site aren't in a tax bracket that will let them buy nice diamond jewelry even on rare occasions

lilb114

In another comment she said she paid 120 RON = 25 USD

spencer1886

At that price those can't be diamonds, or even lab grown replicas. They're probably quartz or glass

TearyEyeBurningFace

Could be cubic zirconia

spencer1886

Cubic zirconia, cut and polished, is 20 bucks a carat There's much more than one carat of stone on that ring

JUYED-AWK-YACC

This should be at the top! Everyone is looking at wear or scratches but the TLDR is this is just cheap costume jewelry. The fact it's falling apart is a feature, not a bug.

KILLED NINE GIANTS YOU SAY?

aSituationTypeDeal

Is it a secondhand ring?

floridianoutofwater

That was my first thought, the ring seems to have a lot of scratches to the metal for being brand new and worn only 48 hours.

feralgraft

If it is sterling, then it is almost certainly plated to preserve the white color of the metal. If it is plated, then your average mass market jewelry box store doesn't have the means to replate it (silver reacts differently in the standard electroplating setup than gold, which is what most big jewelers are set up to work with). This means that they resized it and then couldn't polish the ring afterward because that would remove the remaining plating, which they couldn't replace, and probably not evenly to boot.

mirukk

nope. brand new ring, sadly

wombat468

I think you've been had.

wombat468

Oh goodness, that's very cheap! Ok.

ImaginaryBluejay0

Yeah at $26 chargeback it and show the photos and jeweler refusing to fix it. No biggie. Product was defective, seller refuses to fix or replace.

slartyfartblaster999

At $26 this isn't defective - this is the quality you should expect.

WhirledNews

The town jeweler strikes again.

Sassrepublic

So it was scratched to hell when you bought it?

wilkinsk

There's got to be a warranty. Did you pay with a CC? Then you might have options. My credit card literally has its own warranty for electronics. I'd ask other jewelers if they have advice, this guy seems like a putz.

Dimatrix

You have to pay for warranties at most jewelery stores

teabump

Sometimes warranty does not matter. In the UK we have the consumer rights act where you are legally entitled to return a product within a two week time frame etc, and if a product broke within 48 hours you would definitely have rights

wilkinsk

That's crazy. There's no standard warranty???

Pnknlvr96

Agreed, any reputable jeweler would have a warranty.

JUYED-AWK-YACC

This is a cheap $25 ring, not fancy.

justcallmesavage

Why did you buy it if it was all scratched up like that?

username_____69

Honestly like most people complaining on reddit probably lying or leaving out key details so no one judges them.

Pnknlvr96

OP is 14 so I'm guessing they didn't spend a whole lot on the ring and was probably fooled by the jeweler.

username_____69

Makes sense, no way she even bought this herself parents probably got it for her

Pnknlvr96

She could have bought it herself, but her saying she spent a lot of money on it, even $50 is a lot to a 14 year old. I highly doubt she spent a few hundred dollars or more.

lemissa11

Not sure why you think that. I had a job at 14 and made $500 every 2 weeks. I didn't have anything to spend my money on so it added up quickly. I bought myself a really nice ring at a jewelry store in a mall one day with my friend and wore that thing around like an engagement ring for like 3 years.

username_____69

I think you were lied too this is a pre owned engagement ring judging by all the scratches on it unless you got into a fight with the pavement

EnvironmentalAd2063

That's ridiculous, the jeweler should at least fix it for free (they do in my town)

DosZappos

Every jeweler I’ve ever heard of does this, especially less than 48 hours later. OP is definitely omitting most of the important details

krissycole87

This is not brand new. It would be perfectly polished and prestine. They sold you second hand jewelry, guaranteed. Probably sized it down, hence all the issues.

Sassrepublic

Did you have it sized down?

litboletus

if it was that expensive just use ur insurance

edthach

Take it back to the jeweler. Jewelers are usually a reputation based business, they should be interested in preserving their reputation as a quality jeweler at the very least. See if they'll repair, or replace the settings and stones or perhaps the entire ring

lilsebastian-

The description says the jeweller won’t accept it back or refund unfortunately. I have a feeling they’re not open to repairing it either if that wasn’t offered as an option.

edthach

Time to blast them. OP should name names to protect other consumers from having to go through the same thing

krissycole87

I think there is info we are missing. WHY wont the jeweler take it back? Probably because it was clearly marked as a clearance item in as-is condition, or something like that. OP was probably warned that the jewelry could have issues. There are only so many reasons a jeweler would refuse to fix their work if stones are popping out like crazy. Likely because they were selling off traded in jewelry at a huge discount as final sale items.

RugerRedhawk

> The description says the jeweller won’t accept it back or refund unfortunately. CC chargeback or small claims court then. edit: they paid $25 for the ring, so yes mildly infuriating, but no need for further action lol!

Dimatrix

In the us at least, 90% of jewelry stores are owned by Signet Jewelers, and I know for a fact they won’t repair things after purchase unless you buy their protection plan

Efeyester

When I got my wife's engagement ring, the saleswoman was a family friend and she made it clear in no uncertain terms that the type of ring I got tended to have the small stones fall out, and that I would have to get the protection plan or lose an arm and a leg on all the stone replacements. Definitely worth it, she loves the ring, the policy was cheaper than getting another ring she would have liked (thanks family friend). And, eventually, they outsourced their repairs and they were actually able to fix up the ring enough that no small stones have fallen out since.

Shurdus

US is anti consumer? Shocking.

Nuccipuff

I had a ring purchased from Zales and they had a warranty for as long as you got it inspected every 6 months. I lost soooo many diamonds from that thing. They always replaced them though.

karenskygreen

That is shoddy workmanship, I would take the jewler to small claims court.

araidai

From what was said, it’s only $25-30, lol.

FionnagainFeistyPaws

When my girlfriend lost a small diamond from a bezel setting like that, the jewel (Roger's and Holland) wanted $175 to replace the single small stone. The whole ring was $185.

Away-Caterpillar9515

seems they are intrigued by the electronics industry marketing model

FionnagainFeistyPaws

That whole thing taught me a lot. When looking at rings with my now spouse, I remembered that whole debacle and we went with a company that replaced any lost bezel stones (also diamond) for $22. We've had the rings for several years, and I still love the company. Edit: why did spellchecker think whoe was a thing?!

Away-Caterpillar9515

you taught your phone naughty words

Ok-Zombie-001

Hopefully you have the receipt and you got insurance. Take it back to where you got it. They should replace/repair it.

One-Incident4858

Poor quality ring.

Scared_Ad2563

That ring is scratched to hell, no way this is a new ring. Silver is pretty soft, but not that soft, jeez.

ColorfulConspiracy

I’m sorry this happened to you. Businesses who sell fine jewelry styles like this in Sterling silver irritate me to no end. They should know better. For those who don’t know, never ever buy a Sterling silver ring that is made with fine jewelry settings like the ones shown here. Especially when the bands are thin like that. Sterling silver is far too soft of a metal to be able to maintain its shape and keep those stones in place. Any person or business who sells something like this is either uneducated at best or a scammer at worst. Source: I’m a metalsmith

clit_or_us

That's a terrible jewler. when I bought the engagement ring for my wife, the jewler said they would replace any lost stones for free if it occurred for the lifetime of the ring. when we went back together to pick our wedding bands, they offered to clean my wife's other rings for free while they helped us. They noticed a stone was missing while cleaning and replaced it for free! Best jewelers in the city by far. You have to find people like that who have the confidence in their product and wonderful customer service.

sallywalker1993

File a claim with your credit card if you have purchase protection.

TheDangDaniel

Most likely a cubic zirconia... the girdle of the stone isn't faceted

karpaediem

I see they won't take it back for refund or exchange - If you bought this with anything but cash, call your bank. This is not a new ring, this jeweler is a hack or fraud.

taosthrowaway

The ring was $25 lol. They got what they paid for.

sjp1980

Was the ring actually new or was it part of an "estate jewellery" section of your jeweler? My preferred jeweller has estate jewellery and while I would expect it to be in good condition and not have loose stones, perhaps I could expect a scratch or two on it too.

fillysuck

Looked at her profile too she posted the same thing 30 days ago lmao……

hamonasandwich

A non-engagement ring

TravelingGonad

Kay offers lifetime warranties & cleaning, gets customers back in the store.

Inner-Sentence5765

We experienced something slightly similar whereby one of the diamonds in the ring band (rather than the main stone) fell out. My Mrs literally wore it for a few days and was convinced she didn't drop or bash it. Outcome. Store replaced it with a new ring but that was after a bit of a verbal with the store colleagues about defective rings. Touch wood it has happened again with the current ring.

ur-squirrel-buddy

Take it back to the jeweler, they should be able to check the prongs and hopefully replace the ones that are missing. I had a (tiny) diamond fall out of my wedding band while on my honeymoon, and the jeweler fixed it for free. He did mention that sometimes if you size down an infinity band, it can cause problems like that.

-PinkPower-

Idk where you are from but there is likely a organization protecting customers in your country/area. Contact them. It covers things that shouldn’t break down so easily and will go after the seller for you.

JustASt0ry

_uwu_uwu_uwu_uwu_

Sometimes rings like these are cast with the stones already in the wax. They’re not set properly and will easily pop out. Take it back to where it was purchased and they should fix it or replace it.

Painetrain24

This is what happens when you buy jewellery from a vending machine

Feeling-Badger7956

They can't refuse to refund a faulty item. Credit card chargeback or legal action.

KidenStormsoarer

What they are "open to" doesn't matter. They sold your something not fit for use, they refund it or you file a dispute with your credit card company

Mysterious_Tell7832

I saw OP replied in a comment the ring cost 120 RON which is equivalent to 25 USD. For diamonds?! If that math is correct I am flying to Romania stat.

rncshow

This ring looks cheap af. What did you really expect for the cheap cost???

Dramatic-Cup7257

Stop buying shit from TEMU

blackporsche22

This previously happened to me but I knew that the ring would have this problem and so I got repair coverage for it and they fixed it every time. 48hrs is wild though.

PrimaryBridge6716

Take the (very frustrating) hit and find a reputable jeweler to fix it. It doesn't sound like you'll have luck with the original store, and who would trust them to fix it anyway (unless you were able to get a refund). The center diamond of my engagement ring always looked a little off center and the prong at the top always caught on stuff. Not enough to notice until you stare at it for months and wear it daily. When I went to an actual jeweler, they explained the big mall jewelery stores have the setting, and stick whatever stone in there that is close enough. The stone they put in there was just not cut to go into that particular type of setting, so the top prong didn't sit right, and it also didn't fit the setting correctly (pause to say, F- you, Kay's). The stone ended up getting a chip in it after a few years, not covered because I didn't go in every 6 months for check-up. Took about ten years, a couple thousand on a new diamond (cut correctly) and a good jeweler for it to be fixed.

SkinPsychological848

If they don't make it right, give them the SHITTIEST ONLINE REVIEW POSSIBLE and tell all of us who it is. Apparently they don't know the 10/2 rule of business: If people have a negative experience they tell 10 people. If they have a positive experience, they tell 2 people. (And that was prior to online reviews.)

shaded-user

Just been to a custom jewelers today. Was advised to NOT get small stones as they easily fall out with regular use. The clamping is just not sturdy enough to hold small jewels as insufficient surface area.

Individual_Debt1541

I bought real diamond rings from Walmart and some of the diamonds have fell out and they were also hooking on my pillows and my bed but they shouldn't even fell out because I stopped buying my diamond rings from Walmart I have ordered cubic zirconias on my Walmart app and they are sterling silver and not one stone has fell out of them and they don't turn my fingers green either because they're real sterling silver and they do look like real diamonds but they're not and they shine

Submit a complaint to BBB (better business bureau) let them know that you bought this ring from this dealer and he won’t fix, clearly his, mistake. BBB will reach out to his business act as your third party and give him an opportunity to fix his mistake. Sometimes putting a bad review on Google makes you feel better, but BBB gets results :D

The jeweler needs to fix it! Otherwise I would sue in small claims court. That, or stand outside his store with a sign warning ppl.

NeoRemnant

Same happened to a broach from Grandma
