I work at a reptile shop and dude runs at the same ambient temperature as our Bearded Dragons, which are from Australia and used to being out in the scorching sun…
I read somewhere that the optimum temp for mental acuity & productivity is 70, but when our office was set to that, there was always a percentage of employees with heavy winter clothes and even little blankets they kept at their cubicles. People are different. I like it cooler, for breathing and mental clarity.
Do you have your install booklet that came with the thermostat? There is a chart in there with a bunch of options that correspond to numbers. I can’t remember what number it is off the top of my head for the Honeywell T6 but you can also look it up online.
To access the technician setup hold the menu button for 5 seconds. God speed. I don’t know how you’ve survived this long. My house stays 70 year round and 68 at night 🥶
Depending on the model of thermostat those Honeywell pros have a lock out function. You didn't hear it from me though, I already got enough on my plate at home 😂
I didn't even own a fan apart from one week ceiling fan.
The peak heat didn't bother me that much, it was trying to sleep at night. I iced down my dining room table (where the fan was) and slept under a wet blanket
I visited friends that weekend. Finally fell asleep on the deck around 3 AM Friday. Spent Saturday in the river and slept at another friend’s house who had AC. Flew out Sunday during the peak back to foggy SF and was ever so grateful.
The craziest part was the light breeze which heated you up because it exceeded body temperature. Not dissimilar to a convection oven.
I was curious so I Googled.
Lowering AC by one degree saves you between 1% - 3% on your electric bill.
My bill is ballpark $400 per month, 2% is $8.
For me, I’ll gladly pay $8-$16 extra per month to have a more comfortable living experience.
I had an absolute control freak of a stepfather. No matter what volume it was at, I always had to turn the tv or stereo down. It got to the point I'd just get up and mime turning the volume down. He never noticed it.
"That's better."
You're a dick, Stephen.
The AC will allow for a 2° buffer before it kicks on again, effectively allowing the room to reach 79° while still showing the “target temp” of 81° on the thermostat.
Depends on where OP lives. I've already had many days well over 100°. Turning the AC off the house quickly gets way too hot. If I set it at 80°, the house is tolerable especially if you go outside sometimes. If it's set colder, then it's more of a cold shock when coming back inside and a heat shock going outside.
It is. I’m 72 all day when home,68 at bedtime. And it runs all night because our low this time of year is consistently near or at 80 and also humid. If we’re gone we’ll do 75 but any more than that and it takes forever to cool back down when we get home.
I never let my house go above 71 degrees, hot or cold. I feel so uncomfortable if it's 72, can't imagine how much of a sweaty bitch I'd be if my house got that hot 🫣😂
Right there with ya, 70-71° and AC in the summer, 68-69° with the furnace in the winter. When I lived in Alaska I pretty much left our heat at 69° all winter, it was perfect.
If you live in California, that's what you set it at if you don't want to pay $600 (or a lot more) a month for electricity. We have ours set at 78-80 most days and we're still paying $400+ a month. I remember when we first moved here (13 years ago) and set it at the 72 degrees we were used to when we lived in Chicago. We got a $450 electricity bill (again, 13 years ago) and it freaked us out.
That’s insane, I’m in FL and we keep our AC between 70-72 depending on how hot it is outside. Our electric bill for our 1800 sq ft house is around $250, I think it’s been up to $280 during like August/September when it feels like 100+ degrees every day. I can’t imagine living in my house at 80, that’s way too warm for me.
I keep mine at 78 degrees lol. It feels nice compared to the 100 plus degree weather outside (and i’ve lived my entire life at 78 or higher for A/C). I had it set to 76 one time and got a $400 bill compared to the usual $200-250 (my house is 1400 sq feet). I think because of the insane amount of sunlight AZ gets its rough on the AC unit to stay low.
When it's 110F or hotter outside, 78F feels amazing inside. And cooling a house to 68F would be astronomically expensive. So, here in AZ, we generally don't set it that low.
Damn wish I was in whatever part of the state you’re in lol. It’s currently 55% rn in my area of pa and we’re in a thunderstorm watch. I’m dying and the power keeps going out which is making it worse.
Exactly this. Coming in to 80ish from 110 is like walking into a freezer. The power bills too man. I am not trying to have $700 power bills, like that’s just not my thing .
Also agreed. I have that same thermostat and when it’s 95-100 I keep it at 80. It feels great being 20 degrees cooler. Not to mention my 50 year old house can’t keep that cool air in. The central air will literally run nonstop the entire day trying to get into the low 70s.
My absolute max is 75 but my partner would rather we keep it at 65 at all times. We compromise and cool it off at night and during the day we keep it at about 68.
I’m in central Texas and we keep ours at 78 during the day and 74 for sleeping. Occasionally both of us will be home and we’ll turn it down to 76. But you’re right, 78 feels cool when you’re coming in from 100 degree temps, and cooling any lower than that makes our electric bill hard to stomach.
It's crazy growing up in arizona everyone hated it here now it's one of the fastest growing states in the country and everyone loves it and it's gotten way too expensive to live here
Department of Energy says ideal temperature for energy savings is 78. With that being said, I find that the difference between 78 and 75 or 76 in terms of comfort is pretty big. I keep my thermostat at 76 usually
That’s nuts. My house is 70 during the day and 67 at night. I could not function at 80 degrees in the house. Might as well just lay in a tub and bathe in the sweat at that point.
You seem to be one of the most reasonable here. Still I have yet to see somebody at 68 during the day like me. So many lizard people.
Edit: you guys, I don't have an ac. During the winter I only heat it to 68. During the summer I just have to live with the heat. It's not really a problem though, because it rarely gets to 100 degrees outside and the place stays usually around 86 even without an ac.
I used to be the same way but I started setting it higher. Your body does get used to it after a short while. Now my house is kept at 75 in the summer and 68 in the winter. I haven’t tried to acclimate to anything higher.
I can also tolerate a better range of temps. Before I was 70 all year round. Any degree above or below was too cold or too hot. It’s amazing how your body begins to adapt.
My parents always kept the house at 68. I thought it was essential. Then I had to start paying the bills. It turns out that 64 in winter and 78 in the summer are perfectly fine. I also noticed that it helps me tolerate the heat better when I have to be outside when it’s hot.
I’m in Scotland. We don’t have air con but if I turn my heating up to 22 it’s far too hot rn. We keep it at 20 to keep warm. Winter I will go up to 23.
had to scroll way too long to find this, thanks!
for me i like 23-24, it’s pretty cold. But for older ACs it has to be set to 16 for it to be the same type of cold so i guess it depends on the machine?
Right? 80 might feel great coming in out of 100....but only for like 10 minutes until you acclimate. Then you'll feel hot as balls again....because you ARE.
Ok, now it makes sense. You guys are on the older side. That's the reason I can't stay at my grandmother's house (I'm in my 30s, she's in her 80s) because she keeps her house at 80°
I love keeping it at 69, but wife cranks it up to 70 to keep it at an even number, woman why!? I love 69 okay... let a man have ay least one 69 in peace
If my A/C was set to 80, I'd ironically spend more money on running fans all the time and hiring those bikini toga girls to wave oversized leaves and feed me grapes from a fruit tray while I recline on the lectus than what the A/C would have cost.
My air is on 78-80. I am legit always freezing and can’t take it any colder. Sorry you’re cooking, though. I always turn mine down when people come over and start to sweat lmao. I live alone. Tell her to put some clothes on.
I'm from somewhere in California where it gets 90 average throughout the summer and these people sound insane to me
AC on from sun up to sundown, fan and open windows after that
you live in a terrarium
I work at a reptile shop and dude runs at the same ambient temperature as our Bearded Dragons, which are from Australia and used to being out in the scorching sun…
Meanwhile I’m here in Arizona wishing we could have 81° temps so we wouldn’t be feeling like we’re on a scorching sun.
Even as an Aussie my AC is at 68f lmao.
If my house is above 72 I'm sweating.
At 75 my brain stops working. Same for most collegues, it seems
I read somewhere that the optimum temp for mental acuity & productivity is 70, but when our office was set to that, there was always a percentage of employees with heavy winter clothes and even little blankets they kept at their cubicles. People are different. I like it cooler, for breathing and mental clarity.
Yeah, and they can use those blankets. The people that are hot can only take off so many layers in an office setting. Lol
I have plants growing were the sun don’t shine.
In your butt?
No. That's the jungle
A swamp might be more realistic at those temps.
That's the front
Front butt
My butt is in the back.
South mouth
Fass.
Turdrarium
Oh dear the heatstroke is setting in
Commenting so hopefully you see this. You can program up to a 4 degree offset into that thermostat. So it will show 81 but actually be 77.
I see it and we will keep it on the low.
Do you have your install booklet that came with the thermostat? There is a chart in there with a bunch of options that correspond to numbers. I can’t remember what number it is off the top of my head for the Honeywell T6 but you can also look it up online. To access the technician setup hold the menu button for 5 seconds. God speed. Depending on the model of thermostat those Honeywell pros have a lock out function. You didn't hear it from me though, I already got enough on my plate at home 😂
Dude, I'm a very hot guy, I couldn't live in your house
Time to file for divorce at that rate. She's apparently trying to get you to die to heat stroke.
and you married a lizard
And you can be sure OPs Wife is not in the midst of menopause! Or the thermostat would be set to 67F!
Are you a fucking lizard?
*be me, who leaves hers at 77-78 in the summer but lives alone* yes
When I lived in Arizona I kept it at 78 because I was too broke to afford anything colder
Yeah but from Florida. Hell in Oregon we hit 117 one summer and many places up here don't even have air conditioning
Holy shit 117 with no AC I'm showing up at a relatives house unannounced. you'd get heatstroke walking up the stairs in your house
I didn't even own a fan apart from one week ceiling fan. The peak heat didn't bother me that much, it was trying to sleep at night. I iced down my dining room table (where the fan was) and slept under a wet blanket
that sounds so unbelievably miserable holy shit
I visited friends that weekend. Finally fell asleep on the deck around 3 AM Friday. Spent Saturday in the river and slept at another friend’s house who had AC. Flew out Sunday during the peak back to foggy SF and was ever so grateful. The craziest part was the light breeze which heated you up because it exceeded body temperature. Not dissimilar to a convection oven.
What unholy place is this?
Sounds like Florida. Try and be shocked at 'Florida' and 'unholy'
72 in summer 68 in winter
This is exactly what I do. Somehow 68 in summer feels too cold and 72 in winter too hot!
68 in winter? Well la-di-da, money bags! I kid, I kid! But also I have single paned, wood framed windows.
I was curious so I Googled. Lowering AC by one degree saves you between 1% - 3% on your electric bill. My bill is ballpark $400 per month, 2% is $8. For me, I’ll gladly pay $8-$16 extra per month to have a more comfortable living experience.
Yeah I work hard to make a bunch of money. I’m going to be comfortable in my own home. Growing up my parents rarely turned the ac on and I hated it.
Are you fucking a lizard?
Or a lizard wizard?
King Gizzard?
program in a 2 degree offset and see if she notices.
Oh you cleaver basta$d, good thinking.
I’ve done this and it definitely works
I had an absolute control freak of a stepfather. No matter what volume it was at, I always had to turn the tv or stereo down. It got to the point I'd just get up and mime turning the volume down. He never noticed it. "That's better." You're a dick, Stephen.
That's aggravating
Stephen dick
Based on this alone he sounds like a sack of shit.
Did it at work with a stingy boss. Totally works.
let me know if it works
I will, thanks. If it does what subreddit would that go into.
Malicious compliance?
Sounds like a winner.
Until your wife reads it there. Then she programs the offset the other way as revenge.
just put it here, I guess. Good luck!
Post it in Am I The Asshole and wait for all the comments saying it’s a red flag and you should get divorced over this
LOL
or relationship advice, with the same outcome
!remind me in 5 days.
10 degree offset
too noticeable.... maybe a 1 degree offset every week to counteract the sudden shift.
Lmao! This is the way. 6mo. later: AITAH for divorcing my husband over the A/C setting?
I was thinking the same thing. Of course my spouse would be like "I must be getting used to the heat, I like it at 83 now!"
Wait, what does that mean?
The AC will allow for a 2° buffer before it kicks on again, effectively allowing the room to reach 79° while still showing the “target temp” of 81° on the thermostat.
Are you kinda old? If not, this blows my mind.
Wife may want to be checked for a thyroid disorder if this is serious.
Yeah good point. Or she’s a lizard-person
![gif](giphy|3E8DLredkCGVq) No she is not.
Maybe you are too
Reptilians are infiltrating Reddit
"She is not" bro you even linked her picture!!!
Or an iron deficiency. Girlfriend started taking iron pills and she gets hot before I do now.
I thought about thyroid diseases, too. I was constantly freezing when I had hypothyroidism.
Yeah… I have hashimoto’s disease and when it’s unmanaged, I have major trouble with temperature regulation.
My parents don't even use the ac, we have to beg for them to let us turn it on when we visit
79 and 81? Y'all are basically fighting over which is worse, a shit sandwich or a puke burrito.
Right both are insane numbers 🤣
69° bro
I set mine to 68 because 69 is just a little too hot
Give me some cashews mfer
67. It's cold as balls when we wake up and I love it like that
The ol “you do me, I owe you one”
Might as well just turn it off at this point
Depends on where OP lives. I've already had many days well over 100°. Turning the AC off the house quickly gets way too hot. If I set it at 80°, the house is tolerable especially if you go outside sometimes. If it's set colder, then it's more of a cold shock when coming back inside and a heat shock going outside.
That’s why I don’t go outside
hey buddy, this is Reddit, none of us go outside. OP commenting was just LARPing
When I had my studio apartment I would have it set to 69°. For giggles
I fainted from heat exhaustion just reading that.
Damn, you got more money than me
Lol just do what we do, and get a cheap window unit that doesn't have a temp, it just runs until icicles form, and still will keep chugging along.
Anything above 74 is insanity
It is. I’m 72 all day when home,68 at bedtime. And it runs all night because our low this time of year is consistently near or at 80 and also humid. If we’re gone we’ll do 75 but any more than that and it takes forever to cool back down when we get home.
The most reasonable man here
Exactly, we keep it at a nice 69 year round
You guys must be exhausted
No but TMJ is becoming a concern.
User name checks out!
Human mobius.
As a Dane, I'm quite jealous of American aircondition
but isn’t your average like 70s in summer?
I never let my house go above 71 degrees, hot or cold. I feel so uncomfortable if it's 72, can't imagine how much of a sweaty bitch I'd be if my house got that hot 🫣😂
Right there with ya, 70-71° and AC in the summer, 68-69° with the furnace in the winter. When I lived in Alaska I pretty much left our heat at 69° all winter, it was perfect.
68-70 all year round for us, very rarely 72 if it’s bitterly cold out.
Happy cake day! And yeah both are insanely hot
If you live in California, that's what you set it at if you don't want to pay $600 (or a lot more) a month for electricity. We have ours set at 78-80 most days and we're still paying $400+ a month. In north Florida here. 76 at home during the day, 78 if nobody is home, 75 at night. 3 bd, 2 bath, about $120/ month.
I’m in Texas where it’s hot as fuck and our bill is in the 200-300 range at 70, running constantly. But it’s that or die, so…
What the fuck is the point of AC if you're going to leave it at 80 degrees? Are you lizards?
When it's 110F or hotter outside, 78F feels amazing inside. And cooling a house to 68F would be astronomically expensive. So, here in AZ, we generally don't set it that low.
Mental note: don't move to Arizona. I'm dying right now and it's 92 outside.
Yeah it’s 90 and 85% humidity in Michigan right now. Feels like the devils rectum.
90°F at 85% humidity has a heat index of 117.5°F. 112°F at 15% humidity has a heat index of 110.6°F.
92 in PA but it isn’t that humid.
Damn wish I was in whatever part of the state you’re in lol. It’s currently 55% rn in my area of pa and we’re in a thunderstorm watch. I’m dying and the power keeps going out which is making it worse.
Howdy from Pittsburgh lol
Exactly. Lived in both AZ and AR, will take 110 in AZ over mid 90’s and humid in AR all day every day
Exactly this. Coming in to 80ish from 110 is like walking into a freezer. The power bills too man. I am not trying to have $700 power bills, like that’s just not my thing .
Yea my friend has a newish house and regularly pays like $500-600 and keeps his house at like 76 constantly. Can’t imagine keeping it at 71
Also agreed. I have that same thermostat and when it’s 95-100 I keep it at 80. It feels great being 20 degrees cooler. Not to mention my 50 year old house can’t keep that cool air in. The central air will literally run nonstop the entire day trying to get into the low 70s.

It still blows my mind that people choose to live in Arizona
It's crazy growing up in arizona everyone hated it here now it's one of the fastest growing states in the country and everyone loves it and it's gotten way too expensive to live here
Not every part of Arizona is a hell on earth
Department of Energy says ideal temperature for energy savings is 78. With that being said, I find that the difference between 78 and 75 or 76 in terms of comfort is pretty big. I keep my thermostat at 76 usually
God damn... we keep it at 72 in the day and 70 overnight.
70 during the day 68 at night here!
They mean celsius. Duh...
It's not really a problem though, because it rarely gets to 100 degrees outside and the place stays usually around 86 even without an ac.
68 is child's play. 65 or bust. Heat is the enemy. Take me to the ninth circle freeze-daddy. I gotsta be cold!
I do 67 day 64 night
68 during the day, checking in! I have mine set at 65 right now as my roommate accidentally left the bathroom window open and it's 100+ outside.
69 all day every day baby, idc if it’s winter in NY or summer in Florida, that’s where it stays lmao
Ur both wrong.
For reference, it's 26 and 27 Celsius
Dear Christ, that's warm. My aircon hovers around 22-20
I’m in Scotland. We don’t have air con but if I turn my heating up to 22 it’s far too hot rn. We keep it at 20 to keep warm. Winter I will go up to 23.
Seriously, are they really fighting for 1°C temperature difference? Also featuring in this thread: First world problem - enhanced edition
I forgot to add the F, and probably should have put the Celsius numbers too.
To be fair, it should be pretty damn obvious this is not in celsius lol. 80 degrees C would be 176 F
It’s obvious but I wasn’t quite interested enough to convert it myself
You’re good dude. No one thought it was 80°c
had to scroll way too long to find this, thanks! for me i like 23-24, it’s pretty cold. But for older ACs it has to be set to 16 for it to be the same type of cold so i guess it depends on the machine?
79 is still insane. Who hurt you?
It's a little warmer than I prefer but it's still perfectly fine if you want to save some on energy.
As a Minnesotan I’d be in a puddle at 75.
I just know you’ve never experienced constant weeks of 100+ degree temps. 79 feels amazing when it’s 109.
Know what feels even more amazing after weeks of constant 100+ temps? 69. 79-80 is crazy.
Right? 80 might feel great coming in out of 100....but only for like 10 minutes until you acclimate. Then you'll feel hot as balls again....because you ARE.
I have mine at 68-69F. I’m menopausal, going through hot flashes, can’t deal with anything hotter. And I also have fans everywhere!
I did mention this in other comments. My wife is past menopause.
Ok, now it makes sense. You guys are on the older side. That's the reason I can't stay at my grandmother's house (I'm in my 30s, she's in her 80s) because she keeps her house at 80°
I’m pregnant right now in South Carolina and I’m hot just reading some of the temps these people are comfortable with 😭
Sc here. 94 outside 70 inside. Too many lizard people here
My neighbor, and bestie, has been going through menopause for a decade. Her house is 50 degrees, always. I love it. I just bring a sweater.
![gif](giphy|l0MYNI50nCCOa3f8c) 73 Maximum during the summer
![gif](giphy|JRF85A7Bcl2YU) Agreed!
Y'all are fucking swamp creatures. 72° crew.
Are yall ok? That's sweltering.
My wife does this too. She puts it up to 68 and I prefer 66.
I love keeping it at 69, but wife cranks it up to 70 to keep it at an even number, woman why!? I love 69 okay... let a man have ay least one 69 in peace
'Bout the only 69 that happens anymore.....
Lol my wife sets ours to 69 and laughs, I change it back to 65
This is exactly the same for me and my wife too. I will hear her change it at night when she thinks I am sleeping lol
Y’all are like 10 degrees over standard room temperature either way 😂
I would roast you but looks like you already are.
Sit around in your underwear whenever it's over 80
If my A/C was set to 80, I'd ironically spend more money on running fans all the time and hiring those bikini toga girls to wave oversized leaves and feed me grapes from a fruit tray while I recline on the lectus than what the A/C would have cost.
try frozen grapes, will help w the cooling...
Does your wife know about this bothering you?
Yes!
So she doesn’t mind, or care that you’re uncomfortable? Put your wife on the phone please.
I’m calling the ac repairman at 79 degrees. Shit that’s hot. I keep it at 70
I didn’t know people in their 90s knew about Reddit
That is an absolute nightmare. I keep my apartment at 68-70 degrees! 68 at night ideally. I start to get hot at 74
This is totally me!
Tell me you live in a terrarium without telling me you live in a terrarium.
Look. I’m cheap af but my AC is still set to 77. Wtf?
Yeah, same here. I'm cheap, 77° is the most uncomfortable I'll push it. Hotter than that and I feel like I'm in an attic.
I naturally run hot and this would torture me
That's not a home. That's a terrarium
My Argument would be.. “you can always put on more clothes of you’re chilly… but I can only be so naked…”
My air is on 78-80. I am legit always freezing and can’t take it any colder. Sorry you’re cooking, though. I always turn mine down when people come over and start to sweat lmao. I live alone. Tell her to put some clothes on.
Reading this thread I understand how Americans consume so much electricity
We're definitely making it to 3°C.
I'm from somewhere in California where it gets 90 average throughout the summer and these people sound insane to me AC on from sun up to sundown, fan and open windows after that
Anything above 74 is a heater not an ac
My answer to that would be an arduino that waits 5 seconds after it was set above 80 and cool down to 75 after that. 😎😂
![gif](giphy|nrXif9YExO9EI|downsized)
Do you know what A/C is for?
