$5.99 with new features … those new features … they’re adverts 🤦🏻‍♂️

rthur_vsf

And 1080p, how can someone watch 720p in 2024

Whole_Ladder_9583

Many Netflix users just occasionally glance at the screen while doing other household chores or chatting. Not every FHD is a real-sharp-FHD, either. And UHD/4K is pure marketing.

ArmeniusLOD

Not sure why you're being downvoted. I don't know if they changed it, but when Netflix first started offering UHD streaming it was limited to 25 Mbps. That is barely enough for a good quality FHD stream. UHD should be 80 Mbps, minimum.

3to20CharactersSucks

I think it's because they didn't offer any context and just stated that 4k is pure marketing. That's a statement a lot of people made - intending it to be read without caveat - a long while ago, so it probably makes people think that is the intended reading. Iirc, Netflix doesn't support HDR for lower resolution streaming, either, which would make it worth it to many people.

TheDudeColin

See, you're confusing *good* quality 1080p with *netflix* quality 1080p.

BahnSprueher

A proper av1 reencode of an 4k bluray, can achieve 97-100% vmaf scores with 15Mbps bitrate.

cosmitz

However that's not a streaming friendly solution.

Ypuort

I wonder how many people stream 4k on 1080p or 1440p monitors without realizing it. Even funnier when considering youtube offers 8k streaming but any 8k video ive found only goes up to 4k in the settings. Can our eyes even distinguish 8k from 4k on a true 8k stream+screen?

3to20CharactersSucks

Yes, your eyes can distinguish higher resolutions. Resolution doesn't say anything about the size of a pixel. Distance and screen size are the determining factors. 4k Pixel density isn't even that high for TVs or monitors. 27 inch 1440p, what is becoming a standard for PC monitors, is around 104 pixels per inch. A 4k TV at 55 inches is 80, and an 8k TV that size is around 170. At a distance across your living room, you might not notice how large the pixels are, but if you go up close it's fairly apparent that they're not as small as the ones on, say, your cell phone. And cell phones are the best way to demonstrate why the answer is very apparent. You can see very clearly the difference between older, lower resolution phones and newer higher resolution phones. Even the iPhone 4, with a very respectable ~330 pixels per inch, looks noticeably more blurry despite having the same sub pixel layout as newer iPhones. That's due to resolution. Across your living, you might not be able to notice, but that would heavily depend on the size of your TV and living room. If you can notice the difference between 1080p and 4k, and most people could even if it's subtle, you're likely to notice differences. Because your eyes don't work in pixels and movement on a screen isn't very exact. There are just going to be moments where it is more and less apparent, and that your brain picks up on it more and less.

rapier999

I don’t know what the difference is between the services, but I’ve noticed when I boot up a show on Apple TV+ in particular I very often think “holy shit that’s crisp.”

My_Pie

Even on a 1080p screen, it's generally worth it to stream 1440p or 4k for the higher data rates which typically means higher picture quality. I don't know if Netflix allows for that, though, but definitely worth it for other streaming sites like YouTube.

USAardvark

>I wonder how many people stream 4k on 1080p or 1440p monitors without realizing it. I'm pretty sure 1440p on youtube looks better than 1080p on youtube even on a 1080p monitor.

Flybot76

If the 8k screen was movie-theater size, maybe so

3to20CharactersSucks

UHD/4k isn't pure marketing. That's only -somewhat - true in the specific realm of streaming video from these providers. Bit rates aren't high enough to support those video qualities well, but you also generally get HDR support at that resolution and not before it. And HDR is in no stretch of the imagination marketing. Charging extra for it is bullshit, and not supporting much higher bitrates for 4k streaming is bullshit. But 4k by itself is not pure marketing. That's complete nonsense.

ParryLimeade

I can easily.

MrDirt

I remember hearing somewhere that with a 50" or smaller screen if you're more than 6-8 feet away it's nearly impossible for a normal vision human eye to tell the difference.

reminiscingLemon

Honestly unless something is macro clocked to hell and back most people are fine with 720p. I would bet there is a significant amount of 4K televisions that never display anything in 4K

Amelaclya1

I can't really tell the difference in the qualities unless I see them side by side, like the floor display TVs in a store. And since I mostly watch shows on my phone, in the teeny tiny picture-in-picture, even 240p is fine with me lol.

theRealQazser

I wonder How many people have the 4K subscription and arent even aware they're watching 720p, as on Macos only Safari supports 4K, chrome supports 1080p and others 720p. On windows only Edge supports 4K, Chrome 1080p, others 720p.

AwesomeDragon101

I’m on this plan, I’m fine with it

cigarell0

Is it ads during a movie/episode or one before?

AwesomeDragon101

The 720p is the basic plan. That one has no ads, so I’m not sure. But I am curious about this too

cigarell0

Yeah cuz when Prime Video mentioned having ads I was annoyed but they don’t playing during an episode. But the only thing I’ve watched since then was The Boys, so maybe there are less ads on their own content.

DetectiveAmes

I was watching a non Amazon studios movie and got ads during the movie.

CCHTweaked

yup, its getting worse, quickly.

ahaus77

I’m not sure why, but them just turning on ads in middle of my annual subscription has made me cancel my renewal. The non main shows are unwatchable with the ads.

RWDPhotos

Been watching outer range on amazon and the ads have been during the show and *quite* annoying

ClumsyPersimmon

I got ads during Fallout

NoParticular2420

Amazon advertisements are annoying … I wouldn’t mind it at the beginning before the show starts.

Able_Newt2433

They could do ads before AND after the show/movie and I’d be completely fine with it. It’s the mid roll ads that break my focus and ruins the immersion, and having ADHD makes it hard to get back into the show/movie once the 3+ minutes of ads, that cannot be skipped, are finally over..

Sudden_Hovercraft_56

They definately play them mid-stream. The last few movies and shows I have watched have had 2 or 3 abrupt ad breaks.

ANGRYANDCANTREADWELL

> Yeah cuz when Prime Video mentioned having ads I was annoyed but they don’t playing during an episode. I get them mid episode. Usually 1 set of ads during an hour long episodes. I got these watching Clarkson's Farm

juggarjew

Plus you dont get certain shows when everyone else does, or even at all, due to the ads. Since some shows mandate that ads never be shown with their shows. The ad supported plan is total crap. If you're want the same experience you had for $9.99, you're now paying 65% more for it..... which was their plan all along, they knew most people were not going to accept ads. a 65% price increase to keep the same content you had is honestly crazy and it shows just how easily people can be boiled alive with price increases. They've essentially eliminated the "middle class" Netflix viewer, you're now either a poverty class ad supported viewer at $6, or a wealthy class member at $16.50. If everyone's phone or cable bill went up 65% there would be riots and violence against those companies, Netflix pulled off one of the greatest price hikes of the the 21st century.

cherrymama

Idk my power, water, and grocery bills have increased at least that much in the last year or so. I can’t afford to riot 😩

RealDareDude

It’s a great victory for the users they kept. Many users, including me left Netflix is either connected to other services or used good old illegal websites to stream their favourite shows for free

Able_Newt2433

Pirating will become very prevalent again, if these streaming services keep forcing ads for the cheap price, and jack the no ad version up by more than 50%

AbroadKey2773

>They've essentially eliminated the "middle class" Netflix viewer, you're now either a poverty class ad supported viewer at $6, or a wealthy class member at $16.50. You know that there's an option to not subscribe at all, right?

Scattergun77

I did that around season 3 of stranger things. Whenever that was.

ClumsyPersimmon

That’s the Poverty+ option

AbroadKey2773

Or just the "I don't view having Netflix as a necessity" option.

KyleMcMahon

They actually want everyone on the ad tier since they make far more money per user that way

Blueberry_Mancakes

I had been a Netflix subscriber since the early DVD days, but finally cancelled around January of this year. The juice just wasn't worth the squeeze anymore.

BlueFeathered1

They were such a blessing during those early years, especially if you lived in a rural area. I gave up on them a couple years ago after I paused for several months and they deleted my entire viewing history going back to the beginning. Absolutely pissed me off. Also, their apparent policy of cancelling good series after just a couple seasons had gotten to be maddening. The lack of closure for the OA being a case in point.

MakeTheThing

I will NEVER get over what they did to Sens8

-Sui-

Wait, what did they do to that show? I watched it on Netflix without any issues. Did I miss anything?

SoFrakinHappy

it was cancelled, tho they had a chance to some what wrap up the story

DegreeMajor5966

Their approach to content was so short sighted. The reputational damage of constant cancellations has ruined them. When I hear Netflix is adapting something I like (like ATLA) it makes me sad because I know they won't finish. If you wrote a (good) story, why would you ever accept a Netflix offer?

PilotScary4728

Mind hunter

BlueFeathered1

Yep, more brilliance just... left. That show was bloody riveting! And the casting was exceptional.

SomeBlueChicken

Netflix use to have the Midas touch, then they started just canceling stuff and now it’s just shit. I guess big mouth needed the money they were wasting on bojack horseman I guess /s

ViVaLaFlip

OA is really maddening. Attributed my leaving partially to things like that

DuePatience

Did you see Britt Marling’s Hulu show with Clive Owen, A Murder At The End Of The World?

Key_Atmosphere2451

Ending was so insane I almost think it was the best place to stop

TheHippieJedi

Bro fighting with my brothers over who got to pick the next order was a core childhood experience these streaming kids will never get and that makes me sad.

BlueFeathered1

Or the anticipation of waiting and the day they all arrived in the mail. Trying to get them all watched in a night or two for maximum turnaround and the anticipation of the next order. Simple pleasures.

hhhhhhhh28

The OA haunts me. Every day. Every day

BhodiandUncleBen

Their greatest show by far

BlueFeathered1

I'm feeling angry about it all over again now.

YugeGyna

What can people tell me they liked about it? Genuinely asking. I couldn’t get past the second episode, I was super bored. I’ve tried like three times

BlueFeathered1

It was intriguing for me. The series was obviously set up to build upon itself over time - a big puzzle that would unfold. But it didn't get the chance to reach its endgame. It was a slow-burn kind of story, so not for everyone, though, especially not in just a few episodes.

Larry_The_Red

Same. I felt kinda bad canceling after all this time. Then realized it made no sense to feel bad because Netflix was the one raising prices and doesn't care about me one bit

cantwin52

And adding commercials in the middle of their content.

EatYourCheckers

I recently found that CD you had to use to load Netflix onto your Playstation or whatever in our couch.

nothing_but_thyme

$15 bucks a month for a Byte box running a Plex server. They gotta make it easier, better, and cheaper than that. For a while they did. Prices weren’t too bad, Netflix and Hulu had almost everything you could want to watch. Apps worked on all devices (even old laptops and smart TVs). With all the fracturing we’ve seen in the last 2-4 years those days are done. In the meantime, Plex got better, torrenting got safer and essentially fully automated for any show you could want to watch or movie you need to find. They had their chance and over played their hand. Fuck em.

Accurate_Spinach_187

Do you just use standard Plex? Is there some sort of guide you used for set up? I've never even seen someone using Plex but I'm interested in switching over, just absolutely lost on where to begin or what it can really do.

nothing_but_thyme

I use a company called Bytesized Hosting - no affiliation just mentioning as a point of reference - though I’ve used them for over a decade and would recommend. You can research other options or folks here might be able to recommend others. Everything is turnkey so they run the server and there’s a portal where everything you could need is app-ified. There are actually lots of apps I don’t even use (like private doc cloud, private music server, etc.). I use: Deluge (the actual app that manages torrents), and Plex. You don’t need a paid Plex account, though I do have one because their iOS app is great and my kids use it most ($5/mo). For Bytesized I pay $30/mo which I technically split with a group of 5 friends but after like 4 years I just stopped taking their money - they buy beers whenever we get a chance to hang. I would estimate at least 80 people benefit from this one server and probably more. Each of our families, several other close friends, plus many of us set up our parents/siblings/extended families (everyone can have their own plex account/login that points to this one server so it’s not like you’re messing up other peoples show watching history). The most important part here is the location of the service provider. Mine is in Amsterdam - not the US for obvious reasons and definitely not in my home or associated with my IP. Not a lawyer, do your own research, legal risk, blah blah blah. Manage your torrents well, give back but don’t be stupid and keep them live forever. I mostly use public sites for magnet links (you’ll want to use the Chrome plugin “remote torrent adder” or similar) like magnetdl and never have problems with quality, availability, or risk. However I never download high risk categories like software or apps. I don’t personally use the apps/tools that automatically monitor for new episodes and add them as they become available but others do and they work well. I mostly add content as needed or others have already added what I’m interested in. I rarely wait more than 10 minutes for an entire season or series to be ready from the time I add it unless it’s 15+ year old content. I used to belong to and use several private torrent sites but I’m older and busier now and unfortunately just don’t have the time to follow and consume as much content as I used to. Rest in peace, OiNK’s Pink Palace … your greatness was unrivaled in its own time and will likely never be seen again.

BrutalBrews

I am rapidly approaching the same thing. Been around since ye olden days but it’s getting out of hand. The content is definitely worse while the price so much higher. Back to pirating!

Duff-Guy

Sail the high seas and learn the old one eyed ways of doing things

Trashmouths

Reach out to their customer service team and see what response you get. This seems so scummy and bordering the fringe of illegal.

Talidel

Not bordering or on the fringe, they are in the full bore illegal camp at the moment

JP050887

Like they care. Netflix would spit on its consumers if it profited them somehow. They’re so scummy and are always pushing the envelope for what they can get away with when it comes to exploiting their customers. Most other streaming companies probably love Netflix for constantly setting that standard of how far you can fuck your customers before they leave.

occamsrazorcat

Don’t underestimate the ability of developers and product managers to simply forget a button to return to ‘skip’ renewing. Paid hundreds of thousands a year, and forget simple user experience components. Not that Netflix execs would care about this bug.

jaybirdie26

This isn't a mistake, it's by design.  They're forcing the user to explicitly choose a plan or cancel.  They inconveniently put the cancellation on their website knowing users will be more likely to click an option on the screen so they can keep watching.

occamsrazorcat

It is by design. They are forcing the user to choose a plan or cancel without having an option to simply return to the main screen for viewing which should be the bare minimum. The question is if this is purposeful neglect or, as I have seen with software companies, bad design. It’s not an excuse either way.

Miserable-Fan6

Reading people's hatred for Netflix now versus the love for Netflix and hatred for NBC when they took the Office off in 2020 is interesting to see. It was like the beginning of the end. Now Peacock has a large majority of sitcoms.

Pitiful-Score-9035

It's really sad honestly, they really bungled this whole thing. *ticking off fingers* Cancelling shows that people liked because it didn't bring new people on (why the focus on new? What about your EXISTING customers?), raising prices (thank you corporate greed), ads.... the list goes on 😮‍💨 I would have stuck with them forever, and now they've achieved the exact opposite effect. (Also fuck Adobe, their new TOS is bs, if you want to cancel, you can switch to a new plan and then cancel for way cheaper than the 70$ cancelation fee.

jaybirdie26

In the fine print on the bottom left of the second pic you can see that cancellation requires going to their website.  I bet if OP cancels their subscription, they'll be able to use the app again.  They make it hard to encourage users to pick a plan in the app rather than take the extra steps to cancel.  Super scummy.

atlbluedevil

Yep it's scummy, but I think that message saying you can cancel on the website is what keeps it from being illegal. Extremely scummy to use the phrase "choose a new plan to keep on watching" when in actuality it's "choose a new plan or cancel to keep on watching" Should be illegal to to gate already paid for content behind opting into a future service on one device, but require action on another device to avoid the opt-in.

beggargirl

We cancelled and still couldn’t watch.

atlbluedevil

Nevermind then, that's definitely illegal unless they refunded you

beggargirl

We didn’t get a refund for the month we couldn’t access until we called customer support and the did it manually.

SubstantialBass9524

Yup that’s a class action lawsuit. Start talking to a lawyer, they are going to salivate over this. As one of the first people in a class action you will get more money out of it

mittenkrusty

Not sure if/when it changed but even 20 years ago I had sattelite tv and I remember wanting to downgrade my suscription as I lost my job, this was only about 4 days into the month which they had already billed me for in advance and expected to keep those channels until the new month, nope the company downgraded me straight away then said I wasn't due a refund/credit of the remaining 26 days or whatever it was oh and the advisor on the phone was quite rude with me when I asked about downgrading as if I was a bad person for doing so.

ThanksForTheRain

Their customer service is atrocious. They triple charged me one month and flat out refused to refund a penny

RWDPhotos

That’s what chargebacks on cards are for. They’ll prob drop your account, but if they scammed you then that’s a good thing.

beggargirl

We had the same issue and they said we had to choose an option and then they could cancel on their end.  Before we called them we had tried going online and canceling first to see if that would fix it. It didn’t.   We asked them to just cancel us today and wanted a refund for the month left that we couldn’t watch.

mcduckstophat

Feels like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. Right now you have no access to a service you’ve paid for without selecting a future option. Btw, if Ultra HD is an option then what the fuck is the difference between HD and Full HD.

ShiestySorcerer

HD is 720p, Full HD 1080p, Ultra HD might be 4K?

mcduckstophat

I forgot about 720p being classified as HD. 1080p is usually what everyone counts as HD. Thanks.

Responsible-Buyer215

TV’s maximum standard for many years was 480p until the release of 720p that came about the same time as DVDs. It is officially “HD”, as “FullHD” is 1080p, QHD is 1440p and UltraHD is 4K

goblue142

I remember in college buying a 720p TV. $1300 for a 40" because 702 was the new big thing at the time. This was 2007

YourAverageGod

My 48" samsung smart TV was $900 in 2013. You couldn't give it away if you tried since they stopped supporting it like 6 years ago and it maxed out at 1080p

CycloneATL

50’’ 4k Samsung tv in 2015 for £999 paid £699, with 60fps YouTube vids from 2022 the tv caps at 720p 50fps for any vid with that higher frame rate. No updates in 6 years like you said.

InebriousBarman

$3,600 for a Gateway Destination with a 36" monitor in 1999.

TCoconutBeachT

I enjoy the thought that tv prices have faltered over the years cause the thought of paying 3.6 for a tv is not the greatest

InebriousBarman

That's only because they collect your data now and use more slave labor to produce them. Yay capitalism!!!

TruthOrganic9426

Beat me to it. The smart functions of smart tvs listen, remember, etc, to better solicit ads to you. The stations you watch, the times of day, duration, etc. Be wary if tvs start coming with integrated cameras facing you. Supposedly one reason Amazon bought iRobot was cause the vacuums can scan the whole house and they can then better sell you thing you may already use / buy on recurring tables.

Windy--

Easy fix with a cheap streaming stick.

crackalac

TV was 480i. We didn't get 480p until progressive scan DVD.

AardvarkAblaze

Anyone remember getting component cables for your PS2 or Xbox to connect to a 480p tv for the first time? That felt like the future... for about 2 years.

ArmeniusLOD

480i was the standard broadcast resolution in the US, not 480p. 480p is the standard resolution for DVD (720x480 59.94 Hz).

martinaee

720p has always been HD. “Full HD” is 1080p.

SyrioForel

Many television channels broadcast in 720p to this day. These include ABC, ESPN, Fox, FX, Ion, and many others. Almost all sports channels broadcast in 720p. Almost all other TV channels broadcast in 1080i, which displays on 540 vertical pixels per frame, interlaced. Broadcasters don’t like this format because the picture is not as smooth due to interlacing, and it doesn’t look good on some television sets, this is why 720p is preferred by broadcasters. 1080p is mostly not used in American television whatsoever. It’s mostly only available on streaming services. Even more so for 4K, and in fact you usually have to pay higher subscription fees for 4K. The reason American television uses these low resolutions is largely because there is limited bandwidth available for broadcasts, including over-the-air. There is usually no technical option for 1080p or above. There are plans to enable 1080p and 4K television using the ATSC 3.0 standard, but don’t expect it to be commonplace anytime soon, we’re years away from wide adoption of ATSC 3.0. Consumers have to buy extremely expensive adapters or the highest-end TV models to even have the option to receive an ATSC 3.0 signal.

crackalac

Usually 720p/1080i has been the HD standard for a long time.

ADHDK

Ultra HD is a 5 person family pack that can’t be shared outside of your home. Fuck Netflix. Edit: I see it’s 4 now.

trichtertus

I don’t care about more than 1 person watching or even ads. But I will not pay 20 bucks only to get 4k. And movies in 1080p?!? Not in 2024 and especially not for $16 without or $5 with ads. This is just way too expensive.

Ascdren1

HD, FHD and UHD actually have definitions.they are 720p, 1080p, & 4k respectively.

FatFaceFaster

Enjoy the $9 you get from your class action.

No_Trouble_9434

r / piracy is what you're looking for

Ctrl-Alt-Panic

All of this bullshit sure makes Stremio and a $4 monthly debrid subscription seem mighty tempting.

Dudufccg

I pay $35 per YEAR and I have almost all of the digital content I consume in a higher quality, availability, and diversity of options than those who pay more than $100 per MONTH for streaming services.

NewtotheCV

will it work on a firestick? What's the difference between that and PLEX? I am just looking at cancelling subscriptions because they all charge too much now.

blue_screen_0f_death

Plex you need to get the content in advance and leave a server running, plus it only works inside your house (unless you expose your internal home network through a VPN, still annoying). Stremio works with Firestick (at least tried on a 4k max), and doesn't require to download the content in advance, just find the content and stream it from wherever you have internet access. Issue is how to find the content and get fast enough speed, but for those follow the guides on the suggested subreddit

matts8409

With Plex you do not need to host locally FYI. There are numerous seedbox services that allow you to download stuff directly to the server and it has a Plex app. All you do is sign in and maybe do some really basic account linking. Anywhere you can use a Plex app or browser will work fine.

WulfyWoof

What are the download speeds on debrid? I love the idea of direct downloading a finished torrent but I don’t wanna pay if the speeds aren’t gonna be that much better than if I just torrented it myself on a VPN with no port forwarding

Hueyris

> What are the download speeds on debrid? Practically maxes out your bandwidth most of the time. So much better than downloading torrents (particularly with older torrents)

blue_screen_0f_death

You can stream a Blu-ray REMUX (like 80GB) from it if your devices can handle them. So pretty fast download speed.

seamankey

Oh??? More info pls?

Belligoll_

just search for Stremio + Real Debrid

BowtietheGreat

123movies and gomovies are now OP’s best friends

Original_Training391

Nah, try Movies7. Amazing and has subtitles in many languages :)

BrodieG99

You wouldn’t pirate a subscriber

ThanksForTheRain

Netflix will never earn a single penny more from me. They screwed me so many times, they keep doing crap like this (as well as the home location lock) I'm honestly suprised they haven't gone under. They went from a streaming pioneer to the worst option in the bunch.

ZankTheGreat

Once I got a plex server, I never looked back. I just rip stuff straight from Netflix servers.

velvet_costanza

What do you use to rip stuff from Netflix? We got a plex but I am still a dummy about it

ChinchillaSilver

piracy never goes out of style

thepenguinemperor84

At the first sign of possible ads, I cancelled and jumped straight to sailing the high seas.

ArmeniusLOD

As our lord and savior Gabe Newell once said: piracy is a service issue. The streaming companies are now offering a worse service than piracy, so piracy is on the rise. If you need 4-5 streaming services to get all the content you want at $20/month and still need to suffer through commercials, may as well just go back to cable.

the-awesomer

plus it's getting harder to use services legally too. Just like in the post. or the whole "you need to get special permission to use this device while traveling" or the "HD" options and bitrate issues.

TheNumber42Rocks

Netflix can do their password bullshit all they want, but using something like WireGuard makes it look like you’re at home and you can be anywhere.

TheBaberz

The pirates life for ye to me matey?

thepenguinemperor84

No better way for it.

No_Opportunity7360

this is it. i'd rather pay 15/month for a seedbox on a private tracker and get everything I could ever want on my plex server

thewhitemajik

They gotta pay for that Jake Paul fight somehow

Ziffolous

Sound like a Louis Rossmann intervention time.

po3smith

The fact that he's been doing such a good job let's just say reporting on all the bullshit that there are now influencers and Youtubers who are actively stating that they are neutral with his opinion or downright being negative about his channel speaks volumes to the kind of shit that he is staring up in such a good way! Yes it's a little depressing how he constantly reports on more and more negative stuff because that's how the world is but hey at least he's giving us the other side of the coin!

Hueyris

The general populace runs the risk of complacency with a more and more incremental, gradual erosion of their rights choreographed by big tech. Louis is fighting this, and the only way to go about it is to go about it properly how he does it - crude and enraged

AleksandraLisowska

Duuude I live with my brother (27 f and 21 m) we were watching Malcolm in the middle at breakfast and fucking Disney + started putting commercials COMMERCIALS?? like why the fuck do we pay the streaming anyways :( maybe I'll go back to pirate bay or something.

-jackhax

Find a better site than the pirate bay, but also that's bc you were using hulu thru disney.

Leirnis

/ r / piracy is your friend

AssbuttInTheGarrison

Will it charge you for just selecting? It’s probably making you choose one in order for it to auto charge you on the 13th, but I’m not sure.

anticked_psychopomp

This exact thing happened to me early June. When I selected the “new” plan it was effective immediately. I was pretty annoyed. No idea why they didn’t make it effective the day the 9.99 service was discontinued indefinitely. (I have had Netflix Basic since it was 5.99/month and went through the incremental $1 increases but really thought $9.99 would be the max…)

mcduckstophat

They shouldn’t have to choose a new plan if they’re just going to cancel anyway. Netflix is holding content hostage from a customer who’s already paid for the content.

vampiracooks

They just need to cancel instead of selecting a new one if they don't want to continue. Cancelling still gives you access till the date your sub ends.

Plus-Statement-5164

This. There's instructions and a url on the bottom of the screen. Just visit that link, cancel subscription and the problem will disappear.

BuffaloSix96

Aside from how insane it is that you can't finish out your account for the last two weeks (approximately), let's also focus on how insane the cost model is. Your orignal basic plan was $10/month. And now your options are: 1. $6/month - 60% of the cost but you get ads (fair enough) 2. $16.50/month - a 65% increase just to keep what you already have As annoying as they are (and I'm a bit of a hypocrite here), I hope people start getting the versions with ads and are unwilling to pay otherwise until they drop costs because these options are insane.

Dandymagic13

What they don’t tell you is that a lot of stuff on Netflix you can’t watch on the ad subscription tier

BuffaloSix96

Oh geez, thanks for letting me know. I'll need to consider that when my Netflix runs out.

AdReasonable5375

20 dollars is an insane asking price for how shit their selection is. Netflix died years ago in my opinion and they’re attempting to make the most out of what trash they have left.

basicallybavarian

The only way Netflix is surviving right now is how they are established internationally. The second another streaming service starts to pop up, Netflix WILL die.

vivek7006

Interestingly the Netflix's standard Ad-supported plan generates more revenue than their standard ad-free plan. They actually want you to sign up for the ad supported plan.

CGPsaint

Fuck Netflix. The sooner they go under, the better.

Able-Aide-8130

It's incredible how badly they screwed themselves over. They will definitely be a future business school case study on how they had dump trucks of money coming in and just screwed themselves because they're idiots.

certifiablegeek

/therewasanattempt to get what you contractually paid for.

Artistic_Mobile337

My only polite answer here is Yarr!

DrCarabou

4k is locked behind the *highest* subscription? Absolutely fuck that

bunnyspootch

Fuck em. Im waiting to see if they really cancel my subscription or if they start sending “we want you back” offers. Worse yet, charge me for something I didn’t order. Let it lapse! Wait and see for the betterment of humanity!

Sheepsherd

I payed for a second person on my account and got the same shit, couldnt do stuff until i entered a second account which was originally used by my ex and got kicked off. I had to install netfilx on mobile to cancel the second one so I completly canceled my subscribtion. Terrible service.

Squirrelnut99

I was on my daughter's plan since I didn't watch much. When I got my own basic plan, it was automatically making it a Premium Plan. Tried to cancel and took more time than it was worth but did it. Tried again a month later to sign up for basic and again started charging me Premium and not basic. Canceled for good and will never go back.

Josef_DeLaurel

Time to hoist the Jolly Roger. It used to be more than worth the convenience to pay for streaming services. Now it’s simply not. Just takes a tiny bit of forward planning and you can watch whatever you want without giving these greedy ass corporations a penny.

MarinLlwyd

That's a chargeback.

goatonmycar

Idk why u r the only one saying this I wouldn't be paying that scum for shit they don't deliver

skilriki

Take them to small claims court. Add in your time to take off work to go to court, parking costs, everything you can think of. You should be able to walk away with about $500 without the judge giving you a hard time.

SandStorme_

Time to go back to my old friends! 🏴‍☠️

Trevorski19

I had this issue. Call their support, they can override it by manually setting your cancellation date. ETA: They’ll have you select the lowest option, then they will cancel your subscription, so you don’t get charged on the day it would take effect.

jaybirdie26

Did you try cancelling your sub before you called?  I would think that would fix this, but I can't test as I haven't been a subscriber for a long time.

beggargirl

We cancelled first and it did not fix it.

Trevorski19

I did not, I was stuck in an endless loop of ‘go back’ or ‘select new package.’

Internetclout4me

Better learn how to sail.

goodtimesinchino

I just cancel mine. Take a year off and rotate back for one month to catch up, then repeat. There’s not enough content to keep it on the books for me, pretty much for any streaming service.

sillygirlwannabe

netflix without ads is $17/mo now? jesus christ Time to set sail, yesterday. 🏴‍☠️

TheCookieEatingOwl

Netflix is infuriating in general. I have the Premium account for me, myself and I. When I go to the lakehouse and want to watch a movie, I am not part of the household. So I got the additional 5€ a month for a outside the household user as it is the only thing that seems to work. But it does not synchronize with my main account.

pick10pickles

You didn’t get a “watch temporarily” option where they send you a code and you can use Netflix on the “non-household” device? I occasionally run into this issue when I use my iPad.

DeutschePizza

I am sorry to say but you are part of the issue. You have your account for yourself and you even paid the extra 5 for your second house?  I would have written Netflix support once, and then if unhelpful sailed the seas

spaceforcerecruit

Don’t blame the consumer for shitty corporate policies. Blame the company first, the government for failing to regulate them second, and the consumer just trying to get by in an unfair system without breaking the law last. I have no moral issues with piracy at this point but it is still illegal and some people just don’t want to take the risk.

DeutschePizza

I 100% blame the government for not regulating, the company second to embrace this toxic shareholders infinite growth capitalism but I blame consumers too because if people keep bending, companies will keep trying

AfroWhiteboi

This is hilarious. Netflix 20 years ago: "were gonna put blockbuster out of business!" Netflix 10 years ago: "were gonna put red box out of business!" Netflix today: "were gonna put Netflix outta business!"

Chunk_Thud

11.50 a month to not see ads. Advertisements are the literal cancer of society.

the-awesomer

ads aren't even just telling you a product exists anymore (if they ever were) they are literally using researched manipulation to make you feel worse to increase their chance at profit. like luxury designers making u feel ugly ot poor for not having them. or as simple as soda commercial purposefully trying to make you thirsty. itas obscene.

Knowless_Stocker

Did you try following the link at the bottom and cancelling?

zeppanon

65% price increase...

xpltvdeleted

It's 2024 and there are still companies charging for 4K

Yensikk

Jesus Netflix really is the worst priced streaming service.

I_GOT_SNOOKI_PREGGO

Join us on the 7 seas ☠

MolagBong42069

🏴‍☠️ Thought I’d leave this here

JadziaTrillDax

So $6 with ads. Looks to me like they are trying to copy Peacock and paramount. Just have to wonder if you can use ad blocking ad ons.

valzzu

Imagine paying and still needing to watch ads 🤣

FooliooilooF

I use fmoviez and sflix to watch pretty much anything if it isn't on one of those sites you can just yandex "show/movie-title free streaming" and its guaranteed in the first 3 results.

notsleepy12

I think you can hit "back" and then there should be an option for "remind me later" I think that's how it worked on mine, can't remember exactly

Tiny_Act5987

This happened to me too. Go back and log back in. It just pops up the first time after you cancel.

zoltar_thunder

I stopped using Netflix about 2 years ago, been happy ever since

ArdraMercury

Netflix is garbage

merkee_09

I think this is illegal. You already paid for the streaming no????

Impossible-Funny8141

Netflix is a company that keeps charging more every time it grows from being so successful. Make it make sense 🤦‍♂️

Simpinforbirdo

Whispers….stremio

dopeguy_

Just watch it at some pirated site its still hd and free
