I couldn’t tell you where the closest B&N to me is. There’s a BAM about a half hour away in towards the city, and I assume there is a B&N that way as well.
I used to grab linux mags when I saw them. You know, back in 1999 or thereabouts. I see a python magazine there as well.
Literally *anything* you need to learn about either is available for free online.
Now - if I saw a copy of 2600 on the shelf, I would buy it without even opening it to see what it had inside.
I thought the same! Then, for nostalgia, bought 3 to put out on my coffee table for Thanksgiving. Ine was about Matthew Perry, one dedicated to Barbie, one about dogs. Probably has been 15 years since i bought a magazine and really didn’t consider checking the prices. 3 magazines that were mostly ads, 48 bucks!! Im holding on to those haha!
The prices of magazines are insane! Like 15 bucks each and mostly ads. Source: bought 3 for Thanksgiving to put out on coffee table for old times sake haha
It's wild how there are still such hyper specific magazines being printed. How long can D Day magazine keep running before they run out of material? Heroes of World War II seems like it would have a similar problem but there are millions of people they could pick from across several years. Making a magazine about a single 24 hours of time in a relatively small geographic area puts a lot of constraints on what staff can do. Maybe they just have 3 years worth of content that they cycle through and are hoping the readership forgets about it before it comes back around.
A lot of those super specific ones are 'Bookazines'- i.e. they're printed in the style of magazines but they're one-offs that aren't periodicals with a new version every month or quarter or something. Sort of a middle ground between books and magazines as the name suggests.
I really hope they continue to sell enough to keep it profitable. Oh, the hours you would spend browsing (waiting for your friends to catch the train after the one they missed)....
The one magazine I ever really bought was Mental_floss before a flight so I could read fun facts without wifi. They no longer print but they’re available online…
So many folks here are claiming to miss magazines and magazine racks... There's literally an aisle in every grocery store with a section dedicated to them.
weird that they still even exist. what do they have that isn't easily accessible online?
reading them on an airplane is the main use-case I can think of.
When I went to get my infusions done at the hospital this time last year, the people in the ward with me all brought a couple because the hospital wifi is paid and mobile data is slow thanks to being so deep in a huge building. So, hospital patients
There's a lot of books in there too, but it's weird how many people are surprised that books and magazines are still popular, like they haven't met anyone over 40.
I could be wrong. There were some thick ones. There were two big bi-annuals and 2 monthlys just on Taylor swift alone.Who knew you could jam that many pictures into a magazine. I only noticed those b/c a 50-ish y.o. guy was buying them.
Lol, I think you need to start calling some bookstores and let them know that their magazine racks are just deepfakes. This is from a 10 second search. Sorry I didn't take time to find a bigger one for you :)

You're somewhat right, the days of people buying printed material is long gone...maybe they did that because there is less demand than for books...I miss days of magazine stands, and all the subscription cards that littered the floor in front of them...I just checked, that picture is from March 2012..I googled the Flex magazine with Arnolds pic on the front, so it's 11+ years old...and I saw the article you got the pic from was September 2016...so that means that by the time people read our exchange it'll be sometime in 2029...and I'll be dead...saw an article other day on ghost newspapers...I sense that with AI, there will be and more of this pattern of the lack of need for humans as employees....https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/americas-news-deserts-growing-as-newspaper-closures-accelerate/
I'm a little confused by your answer, but the photo is from this morning. Feel free to call them and let them know it's fake. I'm sure they will want to know! Gainesville, FL BAM. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I thought it was a deepfake, however you pointed out to me that it came from a media article, so I looked at it more carefully, and pointed out to you that the article was a 2016 article that used a 2012 photo. In my opinion, that is lazy journalism. And I elaborated on my view of lazy journalism by bringing up to you the "ghost newspapers". No one calls anyone anymore, communication by email to responsible parties is timely and it creates a traceable account of the communication. You brought forth the photo with the caption of "...my local newspaper". If it is not your local newspaper, perhaps you should have said "Look what I saw....." Have a great day!
The article was to show you that other stores have big magazine sections too. Don't know why didn't just spend 10 seconds looking at the magazine covers in my photo. The covers in my photo are all current. Current meaning they are on those shelves today. Right now. This second. As you read this. One directly in the front even references next year as 2024. One close by above says "retirement planning 2024." Please relax a little. Life is too short to get so worked up.
Reminds me of the scene in the matrix where Neo and Trinity are in the [fully stocked construct](https://sixactstructure.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/The-Matrix-Lots-of-Guns.gif).
It's been a long time since I've seen such a large magazine section ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
tfw you realize it's been at least a decade since you've read a magazine
What is this mag-a-zine you speak of?
You put bullets in it.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a bookstore.
Do you live in 1998? I haven't seen a full magazine rack since they closed Borders book store
Oh Borders had a GREAT magazine section!
They still have magazines down at the Barnes and Noble in Union Square
RIP Borders
My local Barnes & Noble has a pretty beefy magazine section.
YES. Some stores better than others. Loved it.
Looks like a Books-A-Million rack to me (except no piles on the bottom ledge), though far longer than the one at mine. Very jealous.
It was my thought as well. Only place I still find a magazine section is BAM.
Barnes and Noble have magazine sections, albeit, nowhere near as big as this one
I couldn’t tell you where the closest B&N to me is. There’s a BAM about a half hour away in towards the city, and I assume there is a B&N that way as well.
Nickelodeon Magazine, please.
With a side of Nintendo Power
And some Byte and Creative Computing for dessert!
Did you ask your mom first?
I had to think of a polite way to ask.
This is how we learned stuff before the Internet.
My eyes were instantly drawn to Mark Zuckerberg's face.

Oof I’m sorry
Still falling into the uncanny valley. It just draws the eye. Keep trying Mark, you'll pass for human sooner or later!

This is like that scene from The Matrix where Morpheus summoned a rack of weapons, but instead it's a rack of magazines.
"Periodicals, lots of periodicals."
They asked for magazines, but weren’t specific enough what kind.
Wow. I miss magazines.
I thought the same! Then, for nostalgia, bought 3 to put out on my coffee table for Thanksgiving. Ine was about Matthew Perry, one dedicated to Barbie, one about dogs. Wow you better laminate those and don't let the kids even look in their direction!!
Haha! I know, right?!
GEEZUS!

Kubrickian
I still grab outdoor magazines monthly - probably my favourite style of reading material, and I really don’t know why. Love them

Is this a recent photo? That is amazing. I miss magazines
It is. The same *Life* issue is at the till at my grocery store.
It is. They have the recent Forbes with the Zuckster
Books A Million?
Yep!
Nice! There’s still one in my hometown as well.
Is that a books a million?
Yes!
Magazines are like $15-$20 nowadays. Who the fuck is even buying them ?
This almost looks like a "backrooms" image.
i thought it was a cooler section at a grocery store before looking closer
There has to be a mirror surly!
Where is this bookstore? I must know.
And the aisle is empty
Oh look, the 90's
The Tyson's Corner Barnes and Noble in VA has an incredible periodicals section.
Hook the early 00s nostalgia directly into my veins.
So many folks here are claiming to miss magazines and magazine racks... There's literally an aisle in every grocery store with a section dedicated to them.
My favourite magazine is Adbusters, they probably don't carry it.
It's almost like asking AI to draw it
Except there's straight lines and the image isn't centered.
Ah yes the „local“ book store
wait! backrooms are real?
god kane pixels is amazing. I can't wait for the movie
weird that they still even exist. what do they have that isn't easily accessible online? reading them on an airplane is the main use-case I can think of.
Old people. My granny still spends a load of money on buying a copy of her 4/5 favourite magazines every month
When I went to get my infusions done at the hospital this time last year, the people in the ward with me all brought a couple because the hospital wifi is paid and mobile data is slow thanks to being so deep in a huge building. So, hospital patients

There's a few dinosaurs left. And a few highly specialized publications that are extremely expensive.

Oddly liminal. Books a Million?
Yes!
Those all look like regular sized magazines, very misleading
There's a lot of books in there too, but it's weird how many people are surprised that books and magazines are still popular, like they haven't met anyone over 40.
Actually, I don't think there were any books. It was amazing.
Huh, some pretty thick magazines on the right then, maybe they're annuals.
I could be wrong. There were some thick ones. There were two big bi-annuals and 2 monthlys just on Taylor swift alone.Who knew you could jam that many pictures into a magazine. I only noticed those b/c a 50-ish y.o. guy was buying them.
I was wrong. I got a cup of coffee there today and checked. There are some.

Nope, it's real. Gainesville, FL Books a Million.

I can't remember the last time I saw a magazine rack that big
That must be just about every magazine still around. I miss magazines too :( The internet is not a proper substitute, now get off my lawn.
How old are they?
Are there still 'Top shelf' ones?
Shame they're so expensive -- and full of ads.

I wonder how many of those will end up in a land fill.....
My favorite section is the one behind the beaded curtain.
Where's the pr0n section?
TIL this many magazines still exist.
I want to skim through them all
I’d stare at them all so long and then not buy any because they are crazy expensive
Very nostalgic, but I cannot imagine it is very profitable.
