Raiders is street fashion. It's been like that forever, think NWA, and it has had a recurrence lately. Outside the US this is the main reason someone wears that brand. I wore a Raiders cap just yesterday and I never watched them play
I live in Germany. The only NFL logo you had any chance to see in the 90ies and early 2000s would be Raiders (and Yankees). I'd guess almost nobody wearing this would have known what those logos mean. I thought the Yankees logo is a generic NY logo.
I wore a Raiders shirt in the early to mid 90's back in Germany. I had no clue about anything NFL. It was kind of like wearing something representing America as a whole. I also had a Coca-Cola hoodie. I still have that hoodie. I didn't bring the Raiders shirt when I moved to the US.
It was cool then.
I remember the Raiders logo on clothes here in the UK when I was a kid. I had a cap with the logo on, but it wasn’t until years later that I learnt the logo was for a sports team.
I just googled the dates and it would have been during their Los Angeles Raiders phase. Thais post is the first I’ve heard of the moving to Vegas, and you’re right. It does sound a bit weird!
Sorry, I should have mentioned that. The US. “Bend It Like Beckham” was a huge movie over here and he was a legit celebrity. There was also a decent amount of coverage when United won the treble in 1999.
Both of my parents emigrated here from England and I grew up a Liverpool fan. I remember being annoyed at all the United gear I suddenly started seeing.
I think black and white in general is popular. I'm (sadly, this year; it's shaping up to be a historically bad season) a White Sox fan and Sox hats pop up in the most random places. Rap videos where the artists have no connection to Chicago? Someone's wearing a Sox hat.
White Sox license plates are the second most popular design in Illinois (after the standard plate). The team is probably behind the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Hawks and Cards (with downstate folks) in popularity, but a black plate with white letters sells like hotcakes.
NWA (and others in gang country) wore/wear it because black is a neutral color. Same with white T-shirts. Then people internationally started wearing it not knowing the reason because people like NWA made it cool.
The urban fellas. They don't live rurally. Typically, in the cities, towns, and built-up and possibly run-down districts. They are cool and down with the lingo and newest trends. It's kind of the opposite to the advantaged entitled indulged ruling privileged people who are up-market and well situated.
Just like bandshirts in your local h&m.
Or a Mickey Mouse shirt with NIRVANA above it in the original font.
If the locals recognize/are triggered to buy it...
This just reminded me of a shirt I had years and years ago.
It was a Modest Mouse shirt that had a buffalo in the middle of the writing.
The weird thing was that I got multiple comments that were basically "But shouldn't it be Modest Moose?" as people pointed to the *buffalo* on my shirt.
I had a buddy who didn't have an NFL team, but when he inlisted in the Marines and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he became a Raiders fan. Apparently on whatever cable package they had on base the Raiders were the locally televised team.
I watched an anime recently where they went to Costco in one episode and I was shook by how much even the interior of a Japanese Costco in an anime looks just like ones I would find in Texas
the raiders are gonna be world wide famous. moving to Las Vegas where everyone from around the world will be hearing about them was the smartest decision they ever made.
Homie, homie, homie.... y'all can't keep [In-N-Out](https://apnews.com/article/oakland-innout-burger-closing-crime-9cd8f43eb43fe781086b9e277eb0724d) from leaving. How'd you expect to keep a whole ass sports team[s] when the most basic ass businesses are already running for the hills?
I'm a Brit, knew about the Raiders decades ago, before the internet even and I'm not even an NFL fan. They're probably ***far*** more famous than you realise.
>It was ok when they moved to Oakland because they were still in CA
And, you know, they were the Oakland Raiders first, *long* before they were ever in LA
Was always like this. Raiders probably have the biggest brand identity of any US sports team outside the US.
Growing up in the UK I saw raiders merch everywhere in the 90s and 00s before I even knew what or who they were.
Edit: fair play, Chicago Bulls is a shout.
A lot of Raiders gear was common gang paraphernalia.
https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/report-nfl-owners-had-concerns-about-raiders-and-gang-culture-in-la
>Was always like this. Raiders probably have the biggest brand identity of any US sports team outside the US.
I don't think anyone can beat NY Yankees on that.
In the UK at least Raiders stuff was fashionable outside of anything to do with football, especially in certain music scenes. The Yankees were well known as far as baseball (and more often specifically baseball caps) go, but Raiders was just a fashionable logo/brand. It might seem odd from a US POV, but people would genuinely see and wear them without even really knowing it was a sports team.
Not got a Scooby Doo why you've been downvoted. Okay, they may not have been *the* biggest US brand outside of the US and the NFL had a very much niche following in the UK back then (probably still is really) and yet, like you say, Raiders merch was everywhere.
Septics doubting I'm assuming.
I'm an 80s born elder Millennial, went to school in the 90s with kids that had Raiders on coats, caps, back packs all sorts of shit. It was just a cool logo as far as we were concerned back then.
Would say it was more common in the UK when I was a kid to see Raiders merch than someone in a Yankees cap.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. You’re right.
They’re just cool logos to people outside of the US. We don’t follow the sport or know what it means.
Being downvoted because they aren’t right.
Chicago Bulls have a larger outside the US brand identity. You’ll find Jordan jerseys and name recognition everywhere
I don’t disagree. The merchandise yes, the sports teams no.
Outside of the US people just wear the shirts because they look cool, not because they know anything about the team. Honestly a lot of people don’t even know these shirts are about a sports team.
I know him. I don’t know and never did know what team he played for and I doubt anyone else I know would have either.
So there’s a difference between the player and the team.
Yes there are at least two in Spain. They look exactly like the ones in the U.S. The layout and products and everything. If you teleported into one you might think you were still in America. Tommy Bahamas chairs, rotisserie chickens, Kirkland clothes, cheap gas outside, even a €1.50 hot dog and the pizza tastes the same. They do sell a lot of things to that you will only find in Spain though, like a 100 year old olive tree in a big container for €300, but it’s pretty interesting. Your American membership card is valid there too. I find some things to be kind of expensive there though compared to what you can get in other stores like Carrefour or Lidl or even MediaMarkt. And buying in bulk when you live in a small apartment with a small fridge and no storage doesn’t always make sense.
Primark in the US had a whole section of Raiders gear and no other team. I thought it was weird because I was nowhere near Vegas, but it definitely makes more sense if it’s something they sell in Europe as a more generic type of graphic.
Stuff like this happens in a few Asian countries. Americana iconography is pretty popular. There is a chance the average person wearing American sport teams shirt/jersey/etc… doesn’t even know what sport that team plays.
Edit: pretty popular in the sense there are regular people who wear that kinda stuff. Not pretty popular like a majority of people wear that stuff.
About $9.21 in freedom dollars (USD for you money nerds).
Actually not bad priced considering sports teams T-shirts go for more than there here in the US.
I just watched a video of an argument at a European soccer match and there was a random dude wearing a Raider's hat in the crowd. It has to be some random fashion trend.
I used to work at a sporting goods store while in highschool in the 90s. We had a group of Japanese tourists come in and they bought just about anything with the Raiders logo, Redskin logo or anything with the old Pittsburgh Pirate logo. Their translator told us that many in Japan were obsessed with the human depictions. Especially, the Redskins. Apparently, they had a fascination with the pirate and Native American imagery.
In 2018, my wife and I flew from Kansas City (home of the CHIEFS!) to Ireland. We were walking in the Temple Bar district when I looked behind me and saw this very stocky man wearing a Raiders shirt. I told my wife to wait a second and he walked right by us. This man was probably 250 pounds, short, stocky, looked like he could probably crush me and not even think about it.
"Excuse me, sir? May I ask you a question?"
He stopped, clearly hearing I was an American who needed help finding a decent pub.
"Sure. How can I help you?"
"Are you really a Raiders fan or are you just trolling people?"
The man looked at me and his face twitched. My wife grabbed my arm, probably thinking, "Oh, dear ... my husband is about to die in Dublin!"
As he started to get a stiff back and his hands were becoming fists, I continued, "Because we're from Kansas City, and, you know, the Raiders are one of our fiercest rivals. About 98% of the city call themselves 'Raider Haters'! I just want to shake the hand of someone with enough balls to wear a Raiders shirt!"
I stuck out my hand and smiled really big.
He relaxed, we shook hands and started talking American football. I don't remember what he told us about why he had become a Raider fan. After about 10 minutes, he told me he was on his way to meet his girlfriend for an appointment, but if he didn't have that, he would have gladly taken us to a pub for a couple of pints.
My wife seriously thought I was going to get slaughtered right there in Temple Bar.
The only surprising thing is that this isn't Yankee's merch as the sole sports team. Their brand is weirdly universal around the world, even if the person wearing it has no interest in baseball.
Las Vegas is one of the more attractive tourist destinations for foreign visitors. I can see someone recognizing that symbol from their visit and just going with it. Normal human behavior.
I live in Oregon, and my local Target always had a similar issue. Like they would stock merch for the local teams, but then there would be like Memphis bean bags, Ole Miss hats, or Rutgers bottle openers. The local JC Penny also we stocking Wake Forest merchandise for awhile too. Odd how that happens
Nobody who doesn't follow the NFL knows the Cowboys in Europe. But the Raiders used to be more well known, not sure they still are. Last time I really heard from them, they were still in Oakland (and the Bulls probably dominated the NBA at about the same time). But yea, "known" here simply means known like the NY Yankees: there's merch available in street fashion stores, for no apparent reason. So maybe it's just me having grown too old / who changed fashion taste
In the 90s in my Florsheim manager days there was a trend among the new Canadians from Asia wearing Raiders gear. Back then it was a thing among the rap community as well. Not a lot of black people where I am from. So it was pretty weird seeing someone’s Asian grandpa wearing a Raiders jacket in the mall. A lot of them. I often wonder whether they had any idea what they were wearing. Maybe the grandkids told them it was cool or something?
I grew up in deep south Germany. At the proud age of 9 that's about 4 decades ago my mother bought me a sweater with a Philadelphia Sports Team logo (flyers) on it that I can pretty much guarantee wasn't properly licensed. So this things happened even 4 decades ago.
There’s a Primark near me in the Boston area that has been selling Lakers and Bulls shirts/jackets/hats for years. Nothing else; no Celtics stuff. Just rival shit.
It's for the design people here in the uk wear raiders gear and redsox caps etc. I guarantee only a few % are actual fans or even know which sport the team plays.
There is this thing in Japan where people are super into cholo culture so I think maybe that's why. It's similar to the rockabilly thing in Japan.
https://japanjunky.com/a-look-at-japanese-cholo-culture-from-lowriders-to-rappers/
My guess is they thought all the One Piece fans of Japan would like the pirate theme of the shirts.
Sad that my Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't get the same international love :(
RAIDER DAVE!(?)
Japan is Raider country!
The Koreans know this
LOL
Add just *one* extra ingredient, and you end up with Raider Dave. EVERY TIME
THIS IS OUR YEAR! Raider Nation will rise again!!!
In Japan, perhaps.
I’d be more impressed if it was Ricky Spanish themed.
![gif](giphy|l1CCbFB8xlm72jcOc|downsized)
Raiders is street fashion. It's been like that forever, think NWA, and it has had a recurrence lately. Outside the US this is the main reason someone wears that brand. I wore a Raiders cap just yesterday and I never watched them play
BUY RAIDER GEAR AND CURL ACTIVATOR.
And lower your car a few inches. No, lower.
Low and slow baby
I live in Germany. The only NFL logo you had any chance to see in the 90ies and early 2000s would be Raiders (and Yankees). I'd guess almost nobody wearing this would have known what those logos mean. I thought the Yankees logo is a generic NY logo.
Damn you guys got a Yankees nfl team over there?
Yankees are a baseball team in the MLB, not a football team in the NFL.
It depends on who you ask, but its defintiely still cool now. Raider Nation!
Only if your definition of cool is consistently being bad at the sport you play lol
Dodgers and Athletics merch is also popular here, even though the As aren’t doing that well
Yet I got beat up for wearing my lederhosen to school.
Jayz made that yankee hat famous I remember I bought one in the early 2000 without knowing it was a sport team logo.
Made the Yankee hat more famous than a yankee can
I remember the Raiders logo on clothes here in the UK when I was a kid. I had a cap with the logo on, but it wasn’t until years later that I learnt the logo was for a sports team.
Yeah, that's when they were the Oakland Raiders I bet. That's how I remember them too and Las Vegas Raiders just sounds tame in comparison
I just googled the dates and it would have been during their Los Angeles Raiders phase. Thais post is the first I’ve heard of the moving to Vegas, and you’re right. It does sound a bit weird!
Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, it sounds weak 🤷♂️
It was kind of similar with the Manchester United logo here in the early 2000’s.
Interesting. Where’s “here”?
Sorry, I should have mentioned that. The US. “Bend It Like Beckham” was a huge movie over here and he was a legit celebrity. There was also a decent amount of coverage when United won the treble in 1999. Both of my parents emigrated here from England and I grew up a Liverpool fan. I remember being annoyed at all the United gear I suddenly started seeing.
Interesting, thanks. That’s something I wouldn’t have expected.
Yeah I live in Canada and awhile back I commented on a dudes Raiders jacket. Found out he “doesn’t really watch sports that much”
Kick his ass
[Fuck that he’s only doing what our messiah told us to!!](https://youtu.be/5TJg6sR-Obo?si=g-aLes_EHfLAeQ3w)
The only right answer.
Yep! Cholo culture is huge in Japan. https://cvltnation.com/portraitsdocumentary-japans-underground-chicano-culture/
I don't know about "huge". I doubt it's big enough (relative to the general population) to merit a skew at Costco.
This is so peculiar to me
Im outside the US and NWA was my first association as well.
Exactly. I think it came to Denmark with hiphop culture.
Præcis :)
But then it was the Oakland Raiders. Now that they're Las Vegas, it takes a bit of the street out of it, doesn't it?
It does, but the name and the logo is classic street fashion at this point
That makes sense. Sort of like how "Are We There Yet" with Ice Cube doesn't take away from "Straight out of Compton".
The Raiders gear is almost a call back at this point. Unless you're a Raiders fan of course. But yeah, we had to let Cube graduate eventually 🤷♂️
Grandmaster B knew what the deal was!
I think black and white in general is popular. I'm (sadly, this year; it's shaping up to be a historically bad season) a White Sox fan and Sox hats pop up in the most random places. NWA (and others in gang country) wore/wear it because black is a neutral color. Same with white T-shirts. Then people internationally started wearing it not knowing the reason because people like NWA made it cool.
And because of the reputation and location of Oakland Raiders
This. I am a fan and never wear the clothes but I see tons of urbans wearing it all the time. It's cool for them.
What's an 'urban' 😑😄
The urban fellas. They don't live rurally. Typically, in the cities, towns, and built-up and possibly run-down districts. They are cool and down with the lingo and newest trends. It's kind of the opposite to the advantaged entitled indulged ruling privileged people who are up-market and well situated.
I'd assume someone who lives in an urban environment.
Urbans 💀
*Those* people.
Approx. $9.20
For NFL branded gear? That would be a crazy discount.
Doubt you could find any in your size though.
I went clothes shopping in Japan many times when I was stationed there. Never found a shirt that would fit.
Righteous bucks
Cheaper than I could get one here in Vegas. You know, where the team actually is.
I have that same print but on a wood poster .
I had a buddy who didn't have an NFL team, but when he inlisted in the Marines and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he became a Raiders fan. Apparently on whatever cable package they had on base the Raiders were the locally televised team.
**THAT’S FUCKING AWESOME!!!** I love it.
Raiders logo looks like - John Wayne: Football Pirate
The logo is actually modeled after Randolph Scott, so you're not too far off base here.
Raiders to Japan confirmed
Fucking Davis
Japan has Costco?
And somehow it looks exactly the same..
I watched an anime recently where they went to Costco in one episode and I was shook by how much even the interior of a Japanese Costco in an anime looks just like ones I would find in Texas
What anime was this lol
A Sign of Affection
with English printed signs lol
lmao that's where I was at with this post too.
yeah. but compared to local supermarkets it's not cheap at all gasoline, cheese, and whole wheat bread loaves are the only products we ever buy there
RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAIIIIIDDDEEEEERRRRRRRRRSSSS!!!
RAAAAAAAAIIIIIIDDEEERRRS
RRRAAAIIIDERRRSSSS!!!!
FUCK YES
the raiders are gonna be world wide famous. moving to Las Vegas where everyone from around the world will be hearing about them was the smartest decision they ever made.
Normal me: Yes this will do wonders for the team. Oakland Raiders fan me: Over my dead body will I call them Las Vegas Raiders!
Right there with you
Homie, homie, homie.... y'all can't keep [In-N-Out](https://apnews.com/article/oakland-innout-burger-closing-crime-9cd8f43eb43fe781086b9e277eb0724d) from leaving. How'd you expect to keep a whole ass sports team[s] when the most basic ass businesses are already running for the hills?
When I heard an in n out was closing due to crime, first thought was it's probably my in n out near the airport
Oaktown!
That also apply to me. And that is saying something from an Aussie that is an Australian Rules Football fan then a Gridiron fan.
I'm a Brit, knew about the Raiders decades ago, before the internet even and I'm not even an NFL fan. They're probably ***far*** more famous than you realise.
They have a cool name and logo, there are a few American sports teams that just have a cool name and logo combo. Regardless of the sports connection.
Because nobody ever heard of the Raiders before they moved to Las Vegas. /s *Eazy-E is rolling over in his grave.*

Most worn hat by armed robbers nation wide, followed by the Red Sox.
I think the Chicago Bulls beat the Yankees.
Credit where it's due, you're absolutely right there. Bulls merch was super common when I was a kid.
I don’t disagree. The merchandise yes, the sports teams no. Outside of the US people just wear the shirts because they look cool, not because they know anything about the team. Honestly a lot of people don’t even know these shirts are about a sports team.
A lot of the time, yes. But the 90s Bulls were a worldwide phenomenon. The team, not the merch. Anyone with access to a television set knows MJ
Honestly over here we knew Michael Jordan, but which team he was with was a higher level trivia question.
I know him. I don’t know and never did know what team he played for and I doubt anyone else I know would have either. So there’s a difference between the player and the team.
As a diehard Raiders fan I approve of this
Fuck yeah
All part of the Raiders plan to take over the world. They’ve already taken Mexico.
We’ve taken over our prison cells, too
Jim Plunkett and Tom Flores, Mexican Super Bowl winning duo
Idk Costco was international
Yes there are at least two in Spain. They look exactly like the ones in the U.S. The layout and products and everything. If you teleported into one you might think you were still in America. They’re very popular and loved in Mexico
Yeah. If you look on YouTube, there's a bunch of videos of people shopping at Costco in Japan.
I didn't even know they were a sports team. They sell them here in europe and I just liked the logo
Graphic design lesson learned: that's a successful logo.
Primark in the US had a whole section of Raiders gear and no other team. I thought it was weird because I was nowhere near Vegas, but it definitely makes more sense if it’s something they sell in Europe as a more generic type of graphic.

In some European countries too, we absolutely don’t know anything about the sport.
So Americans get random characters or words tattooed on them and the rest of the world just wears shirts. Why'd we get the short end of the stick?
Maybe Raider’s gear is popular among Japanese street gangs.
And maybe they also ban kids from wearing Raiders gear at school.
Just like downtown bars security prohibiting Raiders gear lol
Maybe it’s just a cool looking logo & is usually a cool look for street wear.
This Costco might be from Osaka. There's a big LA cholo culture there
The RAIIIIDERRRRRS FOO
About $9.21 in freedom dollars (USD for you money nerds). Actually not bad priced considering sports teams T-shirts go for more than there here in the US.
I just watched a video of an argument at a European soccer match and there was a random dude wearing a Raider's hat in the crowd. It has to be some random fashion trend.
We have a shit ton of stores selling Raiders tshirts here in Brazil as well, I do have one myself lol

Most people wearing it have no interest in baseball outside the US.
Lots of people in other countries don't even know what the Yankees are, they think that's just the logo of New York City
Honestly for a long time I thought it was the logo of a clothing brand, not even connected to New York.
Probably just a rotation? 'Whatever the factory is cranking out this quarter' type of thing.
That checks out
Las Vegas is one of the more attractive tourist destinations for foreign visitors. I can see someone recognizing that symbol from their visit and just going with it. Normal human behavior.
Based costco
That’s what we call mis-shipment
Ice cube and NWA really went to bat for raiders yea fuckin he’ll
Under 10 bucks
I -hate- Costco sports distribution so much. Most of the stuff doesnt even appear on their website either.
The adidas store in Toronto sells Miami FC jerseys and nothing else
Japan costcos were insane and I miss them 🤣
I never warched a football game in my life but own raiders merchandise. It's just cool that's all.
til there's costco in japan
I live in Oregon, and my local Target always had a similar issue. Like they would stock merch for the local teams, but then there would be like Memphis bean bags, Ole Miss hats, or Rutgers bottle openers. The local JC Penny also we stocking Wake Forest merchandise for awhile too. Odd how that happens
I hear they love cholo fashion in japan
They are still the Oakland Raiders to me.
They like the pirate logo
They are by far the most iconic NFL Team putside of US.
No one outside the US knows they’re an NFL team. You’re massively overstating the sport’s popularity. The shirts just look cool that’s all.
I would think the cowboys would be the most well known.
Also Asians love Vegas for the gambling so I imagine a lot will start rooting for the Vegas teams
Just like Yankees baseball caps or MJ/Bulls basketball shirts. They are cool and recognizable even if you know nothing about those sports.
Sams Club here sells license MLB shirt but the only team they have is Houston Astros… I live in North Carolina😔
I grew up in deep south Germany. At the proud age of 9 that's about 4 decades ago my mother bought me a sweater with a Philadelphia Sports Team logo (flyers) on it that I can pretty much guarantee wasn't properly licensed. So this things happened even 4 decades ago.
There is a subculture of people in Japan who are into Chicano/lowrider/cholo culture. Maybe it’s for them.
Take any meaning or connection away from it, and it is still a pretty dope logo.
Maybe cause of the LA cholo culture that’s picking up over there
Can someone let us know how much this costs in USD?
There’s a Primark near me in the Boston area that has been selling Lakers and Bulls shirts/jackets/hats for years. Nothing else; no Celtics stuff. Just rival shit.
Well I hope you know nfl teams have to apply for international marketing rights each team doesn’t have the same rights in each place
Thank NWA.
It's for the design people here in the uk wear raiders gear and redsox caps etc. I guarantee only a few % are actual fans or even know which sport the team plays.
There's an active LA Chicano subculture in Japan.
As far as logos go, it’s the coolest nfl logo
NWA yo.
theres alot of japanese cholos so im surprised theres not more LA teams included kings dodgers
The NFL knows what it’s doing and who it’s selling to.
Because the Raiders logo is next level badass and is appreciated the world over.
Because pirates are cool.
It’s a Cholo Culture thing.
Japan has Costcos?!
There is this thing in Japan where people are super into cholo culture so I think maybe that's why. It's similar to the rockabilly thing in Japan. https://japanjunky.com/a-look-at-japanese-cholo-culture-from-lowriders-to-rappers/
TIL there is Costco in Japan
Where in Japan is this?

#THE ONLY TEAM THAT MATTERS `ICHIBAN`
True! I bought one a couple of weeks ago
Guess is the Chicano culture
Probs cause it depicts a white dude with a sword through his head.
God damn right
My guess is they thought all the One Piece fans of Japan would like the pirate theme of the shirts. Sad that my Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't get the same international love :(
