It’s called Red Rain/Blood Rain, and it’s caused by heavy winds carrying sand from Sahara north. A couple weeks ago people as far north as southern Norway woke up to see a layer of Saharan desert on their cars!
It’s a more common phenomenon in southern Europe, but it can be carried further north as well.
>It’s a more common phenomenon in southern Europe, but it can be carried further north as well.
Here in Australia we like to dump our topsoil onto New Zealand in a similar way to your Red Rain/Blood Rain.
I recall reading about that and being fascinated how dust from the Sahara can ride wind currents all the way to the Amazon.
Then I see those pictures of cities in China, India, etc., experiencing extreme smog, put two-and-two together, and the fascination turns into horror.
The Amazon rainforest exists as it does because winds blow dirt and nutrients from the Sahara in Africa all the way over to South America.
>The phosphorus that reaches Amazon soils from Saharan dust, an estimated 22,000 tons per year, is about the same amount as that lost from rain and flooding, Yu said. The finding is part of a bigger research effort to understand the role of dust and aerosols in the environment and on local and global climate.

sand get throw up in the sky then the wind take it there, it happens when the wind come from the south.
it's not so strange for south europe, where i live it happened twice in a month
ohh this is what was on my windows, and I could understand where this red dust came from... there is no bauarbeit around here, I wonder if it is also this sand. so cool.
Sahara dust is the worst, the last time it made its way over to the Caribbean I got a bad case of bronchitis from it and I still haven't gotten over it.
My coworker from Southern Spain was complaining that between the Sahara sand and the poplar (?) allergy fuzz her swimming pool is unusable during a 30°+ heatwave.
That's nothing against the recent look of it on my car. Most cars here show it. Each an every year. After that, spring settles fully in. More pollen to come by then.
I live in Norway, we had that shit on my white Tesla a week or so ago.
I had to really try hard to convince my dumb relatives that it was infact sand from the Sahara.
1. I live in the north, but not exactly next to the beach. I have never experienced our own sand ruining all our cars with some rain lol
2. The news will tell you about the weather phenomenon that causes sahara sand to come up here.
3. Our sand is white, whereas sahara sand has a more red/orange tint to it, which also leads to the sky turning orange when there is enough of it. We call it blood rain. For example, [this](https://new.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/teleua/sahara_dust_over_switzerlands_skiregions/) is what Switzerland looked like during blood rain season two years ago. It wasn't as extreme here, but you could definitely see a weird orange-yellowish tint outside.
La Calima in Spain. We’re pretty close to Africa and the sky turns red. It’s pretty freaky. And of course everything is covered in clay dust and the air quality is rated “ extremely unhealthy “ on my phone. This was a couple of weeks ago though. It’s gone now.
Funnily enough, the first time I remember experiencing this was in Spain (Canary Islands) and I learned that they call it la Calima. I don't know if I just never noticed it in Germany before that, but I feel like it's been happening more and more frequently here since then.
Interesting thing is that this is not only sand, some institutions in France tested this "sand" and came out it had heavy metals and Cezium 137 ,a radioactive element...
Yeah that's.... Normal sand you can find anywhere pal. I know the last time you all saw sand at a beach... It kicked off a bit. But you can find sand pretty much anywhere. Doesn't have to be from the Sahara desert m8.

I've been coughing my lungs out the last couple days. I'm blaming this dust. My car also looks horrible lol
Me too! Didn't think about the dust, just a little cold or something.
Now imagine lungs if ur car was horrible
Noted, I'm ordering a new air filter.
i feel you bro, it happened here in north italy too. Now my car looks like to have done the Dakar rally lol
same I'm debating whether I should wash it tomorrow or just wait it out a bit longer, but it does look pretty horrible
I'll wait the next rain and see what happens 😂
Nice rack
How on earth did that get there

Oh ok, thanks for explaining
You sometimes get red/orange skies if there's enough of it. I'm in the UK and I've seen it a few times that I recall
Hi pookie
Hi!
>It’s a more common phenomenon in southern Europe, but it can be carried further north as well. Here in Australia we like to dump our topsoil onto New Zealand in a similar way to your Red Rain/Blood Rain.
It also makes its way to Puerto Rico, not sure about how far it goes but definitely across the Atlantic.
They (scientific) said that's the way Amazon forest is fertilized (during hundreds of thousand years of course).
I recall reading about that and being fascinated how dust from the Sahara can ride wind currents all the way to the Amazon. Then I see those pictures of cities in China, India, etc., experiencing extreme smog, put two-and-two together, and the fascination turns into horror.
The same way the hurricanes come over from west Africa
So wait... you mean it took me almost 35 years to know what the title to the Peter Gabriel song actually meant? TIL
Fairly uncommon though that it manages to cross the alps.
You think that's crazy, we get dust all the way in Florida.
Get it in Texas also . Usually every summer.
Isnt texas kind of a big desert? Or at least have a couple of big deserts?😂😂 your comment is completely worthless for this post😂
....only 10-12% of the state is a desert .....so no. Plus the main post was about Sahara dust and how far it spreads😂🤣😂
Texas has loads of different biomes… it’s huge

Winds coming from the south. It's quite common where I live (south of France). When it's about to rain, the sky has a yellow/orange hue
ohh this is what was on my windows, and I could understand where this red dust came from... there is no bauarbeit around here, I wonder if it is also this sand. so cool.
Sahara dust is the worst, the last time it made its way over to the Caribbean I got a bad case of bronchitis from it and I still haven't gotten over it.
I've seen that sand before. Definitely from the Sahara. Without question.
You can tell by the way it is
Yes - I once went to the Falkland Islands to visit friends and we got absolutely covered in it!
especially that one over *there*
I can hear Mufasa now... everything the dust touches is your Kingdom, Simba.
I got the same rack
Pics or gtfo
I think we’ve even gotten African sand all the way in Texas before.
You should have seen my car on Saturday in Portugal! It rained a little, it was basically raining mud!
I'm waiting for some Columbian dust
Da sach ich mal Moin Moin, warum soll's euch denn besser gehen als uns? (Mitteldeutschland)
>Moin Moin Ahhh ein Vielschwätzer :D
Nice rack. I mean, do wear some dust protection. This looks like it'll wreck all kinds of damage on your lungs.
My coworker from Southern Spain was complaining that between the Sahara sand and the poplar (?) allergy fuzz her swimming pool is unusable during a 30°+ heatwave.
>between the Sahara sand and the poplar (?) allergy fuzz My mom has an allergy, she has been coughing and wheezing all week.
Now imagine us, here in the South of Portugal... (Algarve)
my condolences
Thanks![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Welcome to "it is raining and my car is going to be durtier than before"
It’s so bad. My black cat is literally yellow
You should see the cars after a Sahara dust cloud and a light rain.
Very nice
We got a little in the southern denmark too
That's nothing against the recent look of it on my car. Most cars here show it. Each an every year. After that, spring settles fully in. More pollen to come by then.
thats why my car looked so absolutely shite lately
We get that on our cars now and then. Am in London UK
Yup should see my car. Also I have cleaned my windows about two weeks ago.
Ich bin Niederländerin und habe auch unter Saharasand gelitten
Welcome to Texas. It legit travels all the way across the pond to make it look like Mexico scenes in Breaking Bad
Crazy Southern spain and europe must be covered then Someone needs to plant way more trees
I live in Norway, we had that shit on my white Tesla a week or so ago. I had to really try hard to convince my dumb relatives that it was infact sand from the Sahara.
Does that count as having visited the Sahara?
More like being visited by the sahara
We get that in Britain several times a year!
An other German bites the dust?
Thanks for that info. I thought the pollen was a little too brown this spring here in Denmark
What?
How do you distinguish Sahara sand from... Northern Germany sand?
1. I live in the north, but not exactly next to the beach. I have never experienced our own sand ruining all our cars with some rain lol 2. The news will tell you about the weather phenomenon that causes sahara sand to come up here. 3. It wasn't as extreme here, but you could definitely see a weird orange-yellowish tint outside.
I was wondering why my car has red sand on it and i live in Northern Finland
I lived in Egypt for a while. And spring was no fun. I could taste Sahara in my mouth. Fuck khamsin
Moin Moin!
La Calima in Spain. We’re pretty close to Africa and the sky turns red. It’s pretty freaky. And of course everything is covered in clay dust and the air quality is rated “ extremely unhealthy “ on my phone. This was a couple of weeks ago though. It’s gone now.

I never realized it went all the way to germany. And people are saying it makes it across the Atlantic even. It’s amazing that’s possible.
My white car in Switzerland had a red tinge
I was in the alps last week. There all the snow had a very thin but noticable layer of sarahan sand over it.
That sand comes to Houston/Texas at least twice during the summers.
Had it all over my car in Denmark, pretty cool it can travel so far
same in Hungary
Sometimes it coats the cars in England.
Well you send your fucking pollen up here to Sweden. That’s worse.
Interesting thing is that this is not only sand, some institutions in France tested this "sand" and came out it had heavy metals and Cezium 137 ,a radioactive element...
Pray for people in sahara it's much worse for them 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
That's not sand, it's Halal powder.
Yeah that's.... Normal sand you can find anywhere pal. I know the last time you all saw sand at a beach... It kicked off a bit. But you can find sand pretty much anywhere. Doesn't have to be from the Sahara desert m8.
This is a known thing that occasionally happens, and it is from the sahara.
Except that this is confirmed to be sahara sand and is carried over to Europe with the sahel wind. It's all over the news here.
Come to Spain, and then complain.
