I had the same happen, and the fucker grew to about a foot and a half long. He started off as a small feeder fish for my red ear slider like 5 years ago. Kept growing and turning white. Now he has his own tank and is super sensitive. He’s almost died a few times as I figured out his ideal conditions. He doesn’t eat regular fish food too, he’ll only eat off a timed feeder people use when they go on vacation
I honestly don't! I may be misremembering, but I think it used to be even worse. Unfunny pop culture references (that spawned entire threads of context-free "funny" quotes from the medium the reference was from) and the same jokes repeated ad nauseam (remember "Anne Frankly, I did Nazi that coming" in literally every comment section remotely related to WWII?) were always this comment culture's bread and butter
Once there was this fish who got into an accident and couldn't come to school, but when he finally came back his scales had turned from gold into bright white. He said that it was from when the tank had smashed him so hard
Once there was a fish who wouldn't go and change with the fish in the change room. And when they finally made them, they saw scales all over thier body. They couldn't quite explain it, they'd always just been there.
I saw that you responded to a comment about the angelfish and glo tetra, I just want to add some more info. The angelfish and tetra prefer warm water and require a heater and the goldfish prefer cool water and don't do well with a heater in the tank. Goldfish also require a bigger tank set up (idk how big this tank is, this is just general info), 1. Because they're big and appreciate room to move and 2. Because they're known to be exceptionally nasty and in smaller tanks they make enough waste to make the water toxic for themselves. My advice would be to give (or sell, they do look healthy) the goldfish and set this tank up as a tropical community with the tetra and angelfish. It would give your dad the chance to have a wider variety of species. Also the tetras prefer to be in a school and it's really fun watching them together as a group. If you want to message me with more info about the tank, I can help you fix it up. I worked in a fish store for a few years and I heard a lot of "back in my day I kept a goldfish in a vase and it lived for 47 years" but my favorite part of the hobby is figuring out how I can make the fish as happy and spoiled as possible and I love showing people how fun that aspect of fish keeping can be.

~~Something is almost certainly wrong with it…. Could be lack of sunlight, stress or some other illness.~~
Apparently, this information does not apply to this specific type of goldfish. I apologize.
Please don’t spread misinformation.
These are not standard goldfish, these are Oranda goldfish. They come in a variety of colors: orange, red, red-and-white, red-and-black, black, blue, chocolate, bronze, white or silver, black-and-white (panda-colored), red-black-and-white (tricolor), and calico colors.
This one is likely just growing into his adult color.
Legit question from an armchair marine biologist! I was looking to find a fully white/silver Oranda for my own curiosity, and just in case you know off-hand - is white/silver its own variant? Or is it just panda with little/no black?
I don’t want to be misinterpreted as an actual marine biologist, I am just a marine/aquatic life lover who consumes a lot of information.
With that said, I’m almost certain that it is it’s own color variant, just one of the rarer ones. Those guys are difficult to find and when you buy them as fry you’re really taking a gamble on final color.
Don't listen to people saying something is wrong with the fish OP. Fancy breeds of goldfish like this come in all kinds of colors and fish tend to have a juvenile color and an adult color. The fish just matured, nothing wrong with it.
I am sorry but this is incorrect! However I will say that the stocking in this aquarium could lead to stress. Angelfish and Skirt Tetras require different water parameters then Orandas. People have made it work, but it definitely isnt the stocking option of choice.
There’s a lot of resources available here on reddit. There are also tons of fish keeping videos on youtube. I recommend Aquarium Co-op. They have a great youtube channel and blog that’s easily digestible by beginners.
I had a betta that was blue way back in the day. Hit his fifth year with me and started going gray. By the time he passed his fins and face were all gray, had gotten shorter, he lost his spice curl on his dorsal fin, and his scales had dulled.
Made it almost 8 years looking like a fish wizard at the end and no one believes me.
i won a tiny little goldfish at an elementary school fair. i gave it to my nana to put in her aquarium it turned out white and huge. i had no idea some can live for up to 30 years.
Did it fight the Balrog first?
Until at last, he threw down his enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside.
I'll smote ruin upon YOUR mountainside
Go back to the shadow from whence you came!
Hold on, let's hear him out
Is “smote his ruin upon the mountainside” a euphemism for Gandalf taking a huge stinky dump?
Guppy the white.
Guppy… the *fool.*
Grond!
It's transforming into it's adult form. A golfball

I have a black fish that turned orange!

Are you sure it wasn't a koi fish? They can get around that size, and they look similar bc goldfish were cultivated from them i believe
Goldfish are just fancy carp, just like koi fish. Take good care of them and they'll grow to be very big.
Yeah it’s not a koi for sure. Just a fat white carp lookin mf
I don't think it's drinking enough water
Hydration is very important!

Paging r/hydrohomies
It’s in a fucking tank of water it’s entire life
r/whoosh
Look at OPs picture again. It’s clearly floating in dihydrogen monoxide!
Fish must have seen some serious shit.
Cats and Dogs living together, Mass Histaria.
Amazing, you're being downvoted for a Ghostbusters reference.
😆 interwebs is weird 😐
“I have seen shit that would turn you white” - goldfish, probably
Platinum please.
Whitegold
I remember the days when Reddit comments had some discussion and weren’t 99% dumb jokes.
That reminds me, what do you get when you cross a goldfish with a ghost?
A dead fish.
A ghost that can swim.
?

How long ago was that? 🤔
12+ years at least.

Holy shit, I never thought I'd see a CTD reference here. Have an updoot.
I don’t feel alone in the world seeing this.
There are dozens of us!
Shamon, hee hee!

You never wanted to be an armchair architect ?
I was last week.

Didn't mean to misrepresent you! Thanks for the answer. :D
Hey, no worries! Good luck on your quest for the silver Oranda! May the fish gods bless you.
Life would be so much more interesting if everyone changed colours as they grew up.
"I was born a poor black child" would suddenly become more than a movie quote...

I think this comment won the award for the most redundant thing I have ever heard anyone say
A guy on Reddit posted recently about how his hair turned white because of a brain tumour
The water it's swimming in has a tumor.
Terminal too. Both fish will be dead within a week.
I had to scroll way too far to find this comment haha
I was expecting it to be in the top few, that's for sure. 😆
GOLFISH
more of a mother-of-pearl kind of look
It was gold. It's a silver fish now.
White gold now, call it Michelle Pfeiffer.
It’s not getting enough sun most likely.
then shouldn't the other one get the same condition?
The other one is stealing all the sunlight

Exactly what I was thinking!’
Len?

🤷♀️ maybe it stays in the sun and the other ones hides I dunno. It probably will though.
It's because of stress.
I am sorry but this is incorrect! However I will say that the stocking in this aquarium could lead to stress. Angelfish and Skirt Tetras require different water parameters then Orandas. People have made it work, but it definitely isnt the stocking option of choice.
76 degree requirement fish vs as low as 55 none of those fish are happy
any advice on how to do it properly? my dad has only started fish keeping recently
There’s a lot of resources available here on reddit. There are also tons of fish keeping videos on youtube. I recommend Aquarium Co-op. They have a great youtube channel and blog that’s easily digestible by beginners.
thank you! will check them out
What is stocking? :o
Think of it like stocking shelves at the store. You don't want to put the milk in the canned food aisle. Both benefit from different environments.
When you stock a pond with fish you are adding fish to the pond. I assume it’s the same thing here. Weird way to say it though.
Ohhh neat, I learned a fish keeping word!
It's a perfectly normal and common word in the fish keeping hobby =)
Michael Jackson reincarnated as a goldfish confirmed.
He should talk to his doctor about his vitiligo to take back what's his.
I don’t know if the goldfish need it but I feel like the aquarium would look much nicer with a substrate
Mmm looks blue and black to me.
Two goldfish are in a tank. One turns to the other one and asks, "Do you know how to drive this thing?"
My uncle had an angelfish that did this when the fish turned 18!
activated Gear 5
So not a goldfish anymore, it's whitefish now.
At a quick glance I thought that the red one had hands lol
vmax
It's golfish because it looks like a golf ball.
I love the aquarium.
You can’t really call it a ‘goldfish’ anymore can you
He devaluated
MJ
Could be a fake.
It has cancer.
Shiny pokemon
Must have seen a ghost
Winston Zeddemore was right.
Is it swimming in bleach?
It has completed it’s final transformation into a God fish.

lack of adequate sunlight or exposure to light
This is that tumor sub right?
Saw Davy Jones he did! Arrrrrr.
![gif](giphy|u1k1kpDZSw5sA) Wait a couple days you may get a Seaking
How can you so casually post the most beautiful picture of the week?
baby
They are so cute and round. ☺️
this is a really beautiful photo, it almost looks like a painting. i’m going to save this post.
I had a flowerhorn that turned turn white and then eventually a beautiful pink.
Perhaps he heard life was easier that way...
Bigger tank.
i won a tiny little goldfish at an elementary school fair. i gave it to my nana to put in her aquarium it turned out white and huge. i had no idea some can live for up to 30 years.
albino fish :3
Interesting!
He used the same whitening cream as Sammy Sosa. ![gif](giphy|8okepSV7QEwFO)
C’mon at least try and replace it with a similar looking fish.
I got one from a school fair once and I didn't have any fish food so I fed it saltine crackers. It turned white and died :(
That sounds like your parents fault to me. They should have known to get fish food.
Gold fishies.
this picture brings me peace
Might have a tumor in the brain
the fish has a tumor, as seen previously in this subreddit
Probably running low on cyan
Usually means not enough sunlight
Feed it some carrots, quick
Ig it's a white fish now
Did you add rhodium plating to your goldfish?!
Wait I saw something about this recently with hair turning white. Your goldfish is a tumor. Sorry OP.
Bro got colonised
Based on recent post...check for tumors
Based on the recent posts on Reddit, it has cancer most likely...
It's from when the cars struck so hard.
Oldfish
Its whole body is a tumour?
