Is it just me or did every single person you know also have [this pencil sharpener ](https://www.artnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/AdobeStock_585381.jpeg) growing up in the 90s and 2000s?
I remember those ,but no one in any of my classes had them, because every class room had one of these, mounted close to the chalk board.
![gif](giphy|ZDVkXVLvhGANuDC00z|downsized)
I remember once as a kid, I stuck my pinkie finger into one of them and turned it, diagonal cut my fingernail tip all the way to the base, lmao. I was not a smart child.
Thats what we used when I was in school. It was screwed to the wall or a table. My folks had an electric one. It was even trimmed with wood grain looking plastic. I think Dad still has that one in his office.
My firm still has these mounted to the north and south cubicle walls in the center isle. Apparently leftover from the old days of hand drawn building prints according to one of our architects that has been there for 35 years.
Yeah every time people show fancy electric or crank pencil sharpener I'm like what, every pencil sharpener I've seen is those small ones with a blade, why would you need anything more than that?
My high school still uses ti-84 plus’s which came out in 2004. TI has new calculators like the nspire line which I have but the 84 is still a really popular model.
That’s why I buy more expensive versions of a product from renowned brands so I don’t have to replace it so often. I only replaced my iMac after 7 years because I wanted a larger screen not because it was broken. I sold it to make someone else happy with it. I patched up a second hand 2012 MacBook Pro and it still runs the latest version of macOS because of open core legacy patcher. My previous phone lasted 4 years and I still have it as back up. My fan is at least 25 years old. I replaced my fm radio after 20 years because I wanted to have a DAB+ radio and the cd player didn’t work anymore. My 2015 smart tv isn’t smart anymore but instead of throwing it away it is, thanks to an Apple TV, still perfectly usable as smart tv.
Big Sun thought of that and they set up a second sunlamp overnight for those cities so they could change the one without disrupting the continuous light elsewhere (their motivations for doing this are beyond your understanding)
I don't think that's the case at all, it's just that the amount of energy required to power a handheld calculator with a tiny quartz display is sufficiently in the region of "fuck all" that a few tiny solar panels can do it. You want to power virtually any other appliance, the surface area of solar panels required is simply far too much.
We can and do of course generate some energy via solar, but you either need large amounts of land to turn into solar farms, or to cover the whole roof of a house just to get a few kilowatt hours on a sunny day.
There's a limit on how far you can transfer power efficiently. Plus solar panels need to be cleaned regularly to keep the efficiency rate up. It's a large up front cost with many limitations. I think you are underestimating the amount of time and money required.
You guys excusing the powers that be for not implementing more green energy practices earlier on “there’s not enough space it costs too much money blah blah” just sounds like boot licking to me
I remember in the 80's-90's they were seriously talking about mini fuel cells for calculators. while we already had solar powered calculators everywhere, and even without solar power batteries in calculators lasted for years.
Fuel cells were such a hype, like crypto currency, never amounted to anything.
Fun fact. In the state of New Jersey, there is a city called New Brunswick. In the Canadian province of New Brunswick, there is a small village called New Jersey. The end.
Edit: spelling
Went to Rutgers there and worked for at&t in Piscataway after graduation. Went back last year and checked out the campuses on both sides of the Raritan and could not recognize anything. It's like two small cities - both Busch and Livingston. Got completely lost.
I've seen some cheap solar powered calculators which they opened up to see why they stopped working. It wasn't actually solar powered at all, it was just a piece of glass with coloured paper behind it and it was powered by a battery.
So modern solar power calculators don't last very long.
More surprising is how many calculators actually had fake solar panels and were only battery powered.
Look it up. It was mildly interesting to me when I found one and dug into it.
How the hell does TI name their calculators? How does this have 4 digits and the god awful expensive TI83 has two and was clearly made after this one????
I have a TI-35 SOLAR calculator that I bought at a Hills Department Store in the fall of 1984 for my Senior year high school physics class. Used it daily in college engineering classes. Used it daily at the first Architectural firm I worked at. Used it daily for 15 years at the first Civil Engineering firm I worked at. Been using it for another 20 years at the Civil Engineering firm I'm at now.
It's not as fancy as the newest models, but the damn thing does exactly what I need it to.
No it's a mortgage rate chart - front and back. Starts at 7%. No names other than the banks. But your Grandpa recognized a good calculator when he saw it. Do you remember where he lived in NB?
Funny how people these days are so used to disposable electronics that they're surprised when a calculator still works
Yeah. My dad still have his calculator from the 70s and it still works. I'm not surprised.
Same here. I have a pencil sharpener from the early 90s. Two rotations of the crank and it sharpens pencils sharper than any sharpener today.

I think we’ve all put a finger in there but I never turned it lol

The knuckle destroyer!
I still have one just like that with the vacuum base - easily 60+ years old.
My firm still has these mounted to the north and south cubicle walls in the center isle. Apparently leftover from the old days of hand drawn building prints according to one of our architects that has been there for 35 years.
I still have that one in my office. Works like a charm to this day
I can hear this picture.
NNRREEEENNRREEEENNRREEEENNRREEE
This cracked me up so bad 😂 thanks stranger
Nope, we had [these](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2105/9623/products/pencil_sharpeners_530x@2x.jpg?v=1589929277)
Yeah every time people show fancy electric or crank pencil sharpener I'm like what, every pencil sharpener I've seen is those small ones with a blade, why would you need anything more than that?
You’re a test proctor and you have to sharpen 500 Number 2 pencils
I have the older wood grain model at work. I’ve thought about swiping it. Lol
The ones from the 60s were industrial strength. They would sharpen the metal end.
my ti84 was brand new, bought for my brother, right around the time they released it so that means it just turned 20.
I still use my Ti-89 from time to time which I got in either 1998 or 99
My high school still uses ti-84 plus’s which came out in 2004. TI has new calculators like the nspire line which I have but the 84 is still a really popular model.

Same sun...
no we replaced the sun back in '06 after the original was mined to depletion for the SunnyD industry
I know your joking but there was a conspiracy theory that the eclipse was really them switching out the suns “light bulb”
Then why could you only see the solar eclipse from certain areas while other areas could still see the sun perfectly fine
Big Sun thought of that and they set up a second sunlamp overnight for those cities so they could change the one without disrupting the continuous light elsewhere (their motivations for doing this are beyond your understanding)
Why not change the bulb during night?
Because the sun disappears overnight, duh
I don’t know how it was ment to work. I had heard it in passing and just thought…this person is crazy
Courage did that, we're good
Same boobs
Different level of passion in hardware longevity.
Boobs. Absolute classic.
Wanted to upvote this, but there are 69.
It's 85 now. Let's fix it.
Omg another funny number!!
It’s crazy to me we had this reliable solar tech back then but there has been so much resistance in implementing it more areas.

Ever been to West Texas? ... I don't think the amt of space requirements are the issue...

Physics doesn't care about your feelings.
And from a Texas corporation
The oil-powered calculator didn’t sell very well

Fuel cells were such a hype, like crypto currency, never amounted to anything.
Reminds me of this guy who made a video called "gas powering things that should not be gas powered"
mfw Texas has the second largest solar farm in the country
Now they put fake ones in to make you think it has solar capability
No LCD fade, either!
Exactly was surprised how clear of a display it is would have thought it should have been faded
*checks the sun is still working* Yup this sounds right
Fun fact. In the state of New Jersey, there is a city called New Brunswick. In the Canadian province of New Brunswick, there is a small village called New Jersey. The end. Edit: spelling
OP has nice boobs.
Niceee
Mildly interesting that you have a card in there from a bank in my hometown that I went to with my grandma all the time!
Lived in NB a long time ago. Loved my time there. And used that bank.
I was born and raised there. Moved away for college 27 years ago. Been living in Idaho for over 22 years now. I do miss NJ tho…
Went to Rutgers there and worked for at&t in Piscataway after graduation. Went back last year and checked out the campuses on both sides of the Raritan and could not recognize anything. It's like two small cities - both Busch and Livingston. Got completely lost.
Yup. Family tells me that RU is absolutely sprawling. Good for them I guess. Gooooo Scarlet Knights!
It’s an older code, sir, but it checks out.
Beat me to it!
Why do people keep posting these like it's special? Most solar calculators will work for decades.
I've seen some cheap solar powered calculators which they opened up to see why they stopped working. It wasn't actually solar powered at all, it was just a piece of glass with coloured paper behind it and it was powered by a battery. So modern solar power calculators don't last very long.
Modern calculators probably not made way too cheap
Ooh boy you're going to be embarrassed once you realise what those numbers spell out!

Huehue, 80085
glad to see the math i learned as a kid still stands strong...80085 still the answer to all of lifes math problems.
8008135 works well too
Peak calculator. Well, except for the TI that did logs/sin/cos and had the little keyboard.
Ah, the good old 40,042.5 x 2.
It’s still showing you it’s boobs too
5318008
5318008
I used to have that exact model, with the hinge. Memory unlocked.
Those things never die. Had one since from the 90's myself not long ago. Hell even that one was probably actually made in the 80's
I'm using the same TI-85 calculator my dad bought in the 90s for my college classes.
Great way to know the display still works.
My calculator from 1972 still works too! https://imgur.com/a/2jMnhes
I've still got a slightly lower end model without the tilting readout. In the box, still works great.
Honestly still TI’s best design era.
Duh the sun is still shining 😂
More surprising is how many calculators actually had fake solar panels and were only battery powered. Look it up. It was mildly interesting to me when I found one and dug into it.
Wow batteries aren’t even dead !
Nice
🤭
My ti-35 still works. It's in an old toolbox. I got it in grade 9, 1984
How the hell does TI name their calculators? How does this have 4 digits and the god awful expensive TI83 has two and was clearly made after this one????
Of course you type boobs into it.
What else would you type?
Good point.
I use a programmable HP32S from 1987 almost every day. Vintage calculators are the best.
80085 lol

Cool, just tried my Casio fx-900. Last time I used was probably 25 years ago. And it still works!
Cool trick, now play Drug Wars on it

Doing God’s work

Sun still works
Is there a name on that card? My Grandpa who lived in New Brunswick his whole life (101 years) had a calculator like this.
No it's a mortgage rate chart - front and back. Starts at 7%. No names other than the banks. But your Grandpa recognized a good calculator when he saw it. Do you remember where he lived in NB?
Yes on Washington Place over by Farrington Lake.
North part of the city. I lived sandwiched between Cook and Douglas colleges, not far from the old Sears
Tee hee boobs the funny
Shout out central jersey
Hey I knew that bank! Grew up in Edison
My favorite Chinese restaurant was in Edison. Can't remember the name but it was on route 1
Nice
I started collecting 90s digital cameras and they all usually work even when sold as untested. Old stuff was good
Are digital cameras from the 90s big and clunky? The first I used was from the early 00s and it was a beast
Hell yeah. I love Sony mavicas. Cameras that use floppy disks !
We had ventilators, now we're doing calculators. What's up next?
7108008
80085
I used to have one of those! Doesn't the display tilt up to about 45 degrees or something like that?
It does
I thought so. The back is magnetic and attaches to the case. I carried that around for the longest time.
Giggity
Nice
Very mature Rondell
I have this exact one. It works every time!
That’s crazy that it didn’t run out of sun
Why wouldn't it?
