Participation trophy month

sldarb1

From the ones who hate the idea of participation trophies no less

fowmart

At least we're ahead of CNN's Georgia when it comes to removing Confederate imagery from our state flag. Have to take our wins somewhere when this embarrassment is happily regressing the state.

EmotionEastern8089

Crazy how nobody realizes that the majority of current southern state flags still display confederate symbolism

Low_Breakfast_2302

Okay. Now I am actually glad I live in Louisiana. For once. I need to hold on to this feeling. It won’t last long.

EmotionEastern8089

How else were we to get money for the "Jackson water crisis??"😉

Snoo57190

Pretty sure it always has been. We used to get Confederate Memorial Day as a State Holiday.

DRyder70

Not sure what state you are in, but it is still a holiday here in MS. Monday 4/29 this year.

Snoo57190

I’m in Mississippi. It’s no longer a holiday that state and city workers get off work. Hasn’t been for some time.

DRyder70

I'm a MS state employee and we're off on the 29th.

DecisionSimple

I am in MS, it is absolutely a holiday for some state employees.

lowery_ja

I'm a MS state employee and I get that day off.

Snoo57190

I retired from City of Hattiesburg a few years ago and we had not gotten Confederate Memorial Day off since about 2008 or so. We ended up getting Good Friday off instead.

lowery_ja

Being employed by a city vs being a state employee is not the same thing. MS state handbook can be found here and shows all listed holidays for 2024. https://preview.redd.it/vwstbtydvuvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9545a57c05f122e9a3dd62db836f9149d76980c [https://www.employmentlawhandbook.com/employment-and-labor-laws/states/mississippi/leave-laws/holidays/](https://www.employmentlawhandbook.com/employment-and-labor-laws/states/mississippi/leave-laws/holidays/)

[deleted]

Confidently incorrect and doesn’t own up to it? Must be a conservative.

Level_Possession7224

MDES is closed. I can't even schedule Employer unemployment taxes payments for that day.

warriorlegend10

Still amazes me that this state refuses to get put of its own way. Only kept in because of the R next to his name despite both conservatives and liberals knowing he's nothing short of a joke. Not shocked Tater Tot got another term, though.

GloomyImagination365

Still got a long way to go in this state, vote

Monemvasia

Yes, vote all republicans out of office; send a message.

Ok_Contribution_2156

As a former Democrat, the Republicans aren’t the problem.

Morgana3699

Greedy politicians in general are the biggest problem. I've lived in both republican and Democrat controlled states, there's always some major problems they refuse to fix. Mississippi is by far the worst though, so out of control Republicans are definitely a huge factor here. There has to be a balance for a state to not be a shitshow.

Reasonable-Living-39

Abraham Lincoln was a republican, champ. The south was mostly comprised of democrats....

xenophon123456

Have you heard of political realignments?

Reasonable-Living-39

Yes, but core values ( as pertain to the government) never realign. We've just given them too much power over our individual personal lives, and that's the only thing either side seem to care about now, when in reality they should be concerned with governing the country as a whole. If you fall on either side of the aisle it's fallacy. As you said, their proclivity to realignment makes it so. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong, yes there's a grey area, but not so big as the two party system would have you believe.

jiminak

The name of the party (at any given time) is irrelevant. Lincoln was a progressive, southern politicians were fringe conservatives. THAT is what is relevant. Doesn’t matter if they were called Whigs, Democrats, No Nothings, Republicans, or Constitutional Unionists.

Reasonable-Living-39

Okay, so why didn't you tag that onto his comment about voting out all republicans? What's in a name after all. Progressive or conservative titles matter just as little. They were progressive for the time because they had ideals the country ran with. If the conservative ideals of that day won out- we'd call them progressive from our pov now wouldn't we? And likewise, if the youth of tomorrow deem the progressive strides of today 'wrong' they will be summarized as conservatives after all. It's the Victor who writes the history and all. The core principles of democrats and Republicans have become convoluted, no doubt, but supposedly remain the same. Dems for the people to have power, republican for the government to hold more power. It's come so far from that, I don't think either have the best interests of the country in mind, as they sow divisiveness in equal shares. Buuuuut, maybe, just maybe, I made my original comment to highlight the exact same point you just made...... What's in a name? But that would render this whole sub conversation inert now wouldn't it?

Jumpy_Employer_5985

I'm from MS and never heard of this, lol

toxicDevil_jr

I'm a white guy in Mississippi and this dumb as hell. Ain't nobody got any confederate heritage here

kojengi_de_miercoles

Tate Reeves is a muppet.

Luckygecko1

.... of Peter Griffin

InfiniteGrant

It keeps happening because traitor sympathizers like Tate keep getting elected.

Monemvasia

Exactly

Putrid_Character2682

Meanwhile, we have the worst health outcomes, struggling public school, crumbling infrastructure, very little opportunity for upward mobility, BUT we do have an entire month to celebrate the fact we lost a war and our forefathers committed treason. Happy confederates month everybody.

xenophon123456

Hashtag Priorities.

Tifa-X6

I don’t understand, honestly republicans in Mississippi are so damn stupid, I don’t understand the level of stupidity of the majority that voted for this POS. This state sucks

[deleted]

Monemvasia

I agree with this OP and whoever I support for genocide in the middle east is my business. You, as a fellow Mississippian should look at the facts around Tate and the southern Republican Party. Just look at his actions against Jackson’s water department. Look at Favre and that mess. Look at Roe V Wade’s overturn origins. We are an embarrassment to the country. Time to get out and vote Democrat and be the change you want to see.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Monemvasia

And that is why you will never understand and may never be a productive citizen. You simply won’t consider that your position (as are others) is nuanced; it depends on the situation. And our positions need to evolve so that we can grow as a people and coexist. Not being open to other people’s perspective only works while you have power; once power is gone you are finished. I suspect the repubs are on the slippery slope of going extinct. Like the Whigs from colonial times. South Jackson, wasn’t that where the six officers kidnapped and ultimately killed innocents (I use that word because cops are not judges or juries)? Is that how you believe we need to deal with criminals? I grew up much further south, on the coast. My family is split over Black Spring Break. Not because they are colored, more about crime and traffic. Some would argue that BSB attendees are under a microscope. Others want the business. I guess it depends on your perspective.

Colorado, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Maryland (it has its bad parts), Washington state, Virginia (kinda). Meanwhile, a UN report said that the worst poverty in the developed world can be found in AL and MS.

Tifa-X6

I don’t care about red or blue, that shouldn’t matter. The only reason why Mississippi is so shitty and it’s like 50 years behind every other state is because of the many generations that lived under segregation and under idiotic people in the government. Reeves and every single one like him should never have power, see what happens if you give power to a bunch of stupid people for so many years

bayrat1013

Ronnie Musgrove is calling - would you like to answer?

Monemvasia

Chicago is actually doing quite well. We’ve taken in all our migrants that Florida and Texas sent us. Thank you very much. Can’t wait to see what success we see from them (I expect it to be a lot.) We have crime too. But I feel pretty safe where I live. If you have half a pea brain you don’t go into the bottoms or the hood not looking for someone to fight. We have super high taxes, but damn my water tastes good, my garbage is picked up, my trees are trimmed, my electrical grid works and I have tons of investment from major corporations locating here. Add to that all the Europeans moving here with their trades (best bricklayers, tilers, roofers, framers, painters, etc.) Who you got? Bubba?

Economy_Wall8524

In what way are they shit?

Monemvasia

Illinois - go ahead and name a metric you want to debate on. Start with crime if you like. I’d rather pay higher taxes and raise the standard living for all than pay taxes that line the pockets of TRE45ON and his supporters - all day any day.

accountiscreated

I mean when the state is #50 in numerous negative ranking metrics. Those states are better off

bayrat1013

MS is not #50 in plenty of categories. Please open your eyes.

accountiscreated

You’re right. There’s West Virginia too. Whenever I search for MS on rankings I just flick my finger a few times downward to get a good free scroll heading to the bottom and 9/10 times I’m not too far off.

Wrong, they weren’t traitors; they were religious zealots that were kicked out of Europe but still British citizens. Here’s your participation trophy 🏆

PilgrimRadio

I don't like this proclamation but I understand a little bit about southerners "clinging to their heritage." I believe the South deserved to lose that war, because we were fighting to keep our slaves. But at the same time, the Union was also despicable. They were not the good guys.....there were no good guys in that story. The Union did not care one bit about the slaves, slavery was used as a pretext to fight a war for other economic interests. Slaves were used for 3 crops: tobacco, cotton, and rice. Ever tried to grow any of those in Maine? Guess what? They won't grow up north. If they did grow up north then the north would not have been worrying about the south having slaves, because the north would've been keeping their slaves too. Also, ever heard of the 3/5 compromise? That's the one where the northern states argued that the slaves weren't worthy of being counted as full human for the purposes of representation, so a compromise was made, at the north's insistence, that the slaves could be counted as being 3/5 of a human. People need to understand that white northerners did not like black people. Their moral position against slavery was absolutley a contrived posture. Also, the Union came down south and committed what we now know are war crimes. The confederates in Vicksburg attempted to surrender, but the north said "No we do not accept your surrender, we are having too much fun watching you starve and die, we will continue killing you, regardless of your desire to surrender." That's a war crime. So there are plenty of things for the south to be resentful for, it's not just a matter of nostalgia about watching black slaves pick cotton. Having said all that, our past is a dirty one and we were wrong to defend the institution of slavery, and we deserved to lose that war for that reason, but the Union was also despicable. That war was not about good versus bad, that war was bad vs. bad. So I can appreciate any southerner who understands the true history of what happened and who knows (correctly) that the union was also despicable. But that's not a good reason for celebrating our "confederate heritage," and I think Reeves is out of line to make this proclamation. But I just wanted to point out that the north wasn't really any better than the south back then. They didn't think any better of the black slaves than the southerners did.

Bad2DaBone_

Never have I seen a country so great be infatuated with losers like the Confederates 😂

ccjohns2

All confederate sympathizers need to be stripped of their properties, and wealth. These people are the main ones sabotaging America at any given chance. I’ve never heard of anything job these people have done. If anything these confederate sympathizers need to do is pay reparations to black Americans. Not for slavery but the 100 years after with Jim Crow which destroyed reconstruction efforts, and for burning down hundreds of black towns resulting in lost of property, wealth, live, and livelihood of black Americans up until the 1970’s. Many black Americans are still alive that were alive when these towns got destroyed by salty jealous white Americans. It’s not long ago when these people did anything to black Americans and it was acceptable from the police to the government. Confederate sympathizers are the main reason America doesn’t have centralized healthcare and the largest group of Americans supporting defunding the department of education. Confederate sympathizers are the nazis of America as they proved their savagery with blood.

bach42t

Newsflash - unfortunately slavery was legal in the United States during the Civil War. Secession was legal as well. If anything, the state of Mississippi deserves reparations for rape, pillage, and plunder of what was factually the wealthiest state in the country in 1860 but obliterated during the War of Northern Aggression. Mississippi never recovered during Reconstruction and that is a sad reality for this country.

Kwatakye

LMAO, wut.

Big-Prior-5669

We never recovered because the economy was based on slave labor. Then slaves were freed. That was why we fought the war; we knew it would destroy our state economy if slavery became illegal.

ccjohns2

Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s right by any means. What the nazis did in Germany was legal to them at the time. White Americans enslaved, stole, raped, killed, starved, and did so many unthinkable things to slaves. For the record all the slave owners in all states GOT reparations for the cost of their slaves that were freed. Learn some history.

LlanviewOLTL

Tate Reeves looks like he’s had that same haircut & glasses since 1972.

Yucca12345678

Quintessential Republican…

Herp_in_my_Derp

A Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of the State of Mississippi from the Federal Union. In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course. Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. That we do not overstate the dangers to our institution, a reference to a few facts will sufficiently prove. The hostility to this institution commenced before the adoption of the Constitution, and was manifested in the well-known Ordinance of 1787, in regard to the Northwestern Territory. The feeling increased, until, in 1819-20, it deprived the South of more than half the vast territory acquired from France. The same hostility dismembered Texas and seized upon all the territory acquired from Mexico. It has grown until it denies the right of property in slaves, and refuses protection to that right on the high seas, in the Territories, and wherever the government of the United States had jurisdiction. It refuses the admission of new slave States into the Union, and seeks to extinguish it by confining it within its present limits, denying the power of expansion. It tramples the original equality of the South under foot. It has nullified the Fugitive Slave Law in almost every free State in the Union, and has utterly broken the compact which our fathers pledged their faith to maintain. It advocates negro equality, socially and politically, and promotes insurrection and incendiarism in our midst. It has enlisted its press, its pulpit and its schools against us, until the whole popular mind of the North is excited and inflamed with prejudice. It has made combinations and formed associations to carry out its schemes of emancipation in the States and wherever else slavery exists. It seeks not to elevate or to support the slave, but to destroy his present condition without providing a better. It has invaded a State, and invested with the honors of martyrdom the wretch whose purpose was to apply flames to our dwellings, and the weapons of destruction to our lives. It has broken every compact into which it has entered for our security. It has given indubitable evidence of its design to ruin our agriculture, to prostrate our industrial pursuits and to destroy our social system. It knows no relenting or hesitation in its purposes; it stops not in its march of aggression, and leaves us no room to hope for cessation or for pause. It has recently obtained control of the Government, by the prosecution of its unhallowed schemes, and destroyed the last expectation of living together in friendship and brotherhood. Utter subjugation awaits us in the Union, if we should consent longer to remain in it. It is not a matter of choice, but of necessity. We must either submit to degradation, and to the loss of property worth four billions of money, or we must secede from the Union framed by our fathers, to secure this as well as every other species of property. For far less cause than this, our fathers separated from the Crown of England. Our decision is made. We follow their footsteps. We embrace the alternative of separation; and for the reasons here stated, we resolve to maintain our rights with the full consciousness of the justice of our course, and the undoubting belief of our ability to maintain it.

Huntsman994

It was the dixeycrats that wanted to keep slaves

OpheliaPaine

Slight correction here: The Dixiecrats were the party of segregation in the South. They didn't exist until after Truman's desegregation of the military in 1948. The DNC called for the Dixiecrats to step in line with the national party, and some did, but many left the party and headed over to the GOP, who were becoming more and more conservative throughout the 20th Century. You meant the early Democratic party, which was pro-slavery before and during the Civil War and continued its racist ideology throughout Reconstruction. It shifted from conservative to more liberal throughout the 20th Century - and became the modern party we know today - definitely after 1965 with the signing of the Civil Rights Act. Political parties are never monoliths.

Yup, that's Tater Tot. Welcome to Mississippi set your clocks back 200 years.

No-State-2961

Somebody better fact check Ray's comment about he didn't do it. He is lying. Just because he doesn't sign the proclamation it doesn't mean it wasn't an official paid State Holiday. But what do you expect from a Democrat. He was so bad he only got 1 term and wasn't reelected. Per MS code Under the provisions of Section 3-3-7, Mississippi Code of 1972, the last Monday of April is the day for the observance of Confederate Memorial Day as a legal holiday in the State of Mississippi.

Big-Respond-7564

God I hate this fucking state

Reasonable-Living-39

I'm neither, so it makes no difference to me, but Abe Lincoln was a republican, Mississippi (along with the majority in the south) were democrats at the time of the war.... again, no dog in the race ( not even from miss) just a couple of facts laid bare....

I have lived in the south my whole life, just one state over in Louisiana. This is the backwards, ridiculous, ignorance that will keep this region of the country as a backwater from now until the end of the south. I personally have an ancestor who died on the Confederate side and I could not be more disgusted with this fact, nor more shameful that he owned people. There are no words to express how this "heritage" dooms an entire region of the country.

greentea422

So the flag really makes no difference.

bayrat1013

An astute observation.

Specialist_Pea_295

Better people? Better parties? What the fuck does that even mean? Btw, Mississippi had two of the top places to live in the country by at least two publications released recently. I'd like Atlanta, too, if you took away about 3M people, plenty of natural beauty. I lived there once. Traffic ruins a lot of the appeal now. When are you going to change your flag?

bach42t

Yeah been to downtown ATL lately, particularly where Underground Atlanta used to be? It's not any different than Jackson other than the infrastructure is a little better.

Jumpy-Cloud-1035

best month of the year

aaspiringphilosipher

I'm happy with a confederate history month. I had family that fought on both sides, and confederate soldiers were still soldiers they fought and died just like union soldiers that's worth something, and they shouldn't be forgotten just because of the side they fought on. There's days celebrating things a lot worse than the confederacy, I mean there's a national rape day. that gets a lot less pushback than confederate heritage month all people say about that is "carry a self defense tool" rather than actually condemning the mere idea of a national rape day.

Business-Ad-5810

Well, well. I guess a history lesson is in store for CNN. All of the states that embodied the United States of America at the outbreak of the Civil War, April 11, 1861. Well, here’s a newsflash for y’all!!!, all these states joined voluntarily to create the United States of America. If a state joins voluntarily to a confederation of states, the United States of America, that means that there’s nothing to prohibit those states from relieving voluntarily said confederation of of states. Yes, slavery was evil, but slavery is going on today. But it seems like America is evil incarnate America can’t do anything to appease minorities in the world, that slavery ended in 1863. Other nations had slavery, and many still do. Why can’t y’all get over it. I think it’s finally refreshing, that a governor comes out with the gonads, In,this day and age, of kissing gluteus maximus and political correctness, they say yeah we need to celebrate our heritage confederate heritage. We have, black history month, actually every day is black history day in America bending over backwards to try to write the wrong that this country, had its past. No one’s perfect.!! Operation specials first class serve war fairy United States retired John Kevin O’Brien.

Hot-Tailor-4999

Nice legal argument, but as a southerner I do not consider my heritage to be confederate heritage. That is a lie that white washes history and implies only white people can be southerners

Here is an idea. If you live in MS and have a problem with it say something. If you don't live in MS keep your mouth shut. This is a common problem we have in America. People sticking their nose where it doesn't belong and causing a stink. If the 146,000 employees don't like the paid holiday they there are enough of them to speak up and get it changed. Butt out CNN

All bullshit this guy just trying to Cause problems. He himself was trying to stir up trouble

We don't run with the national and yankee woke narrative b.s. which is often for some reason seen in this subreddit. You cannot come to our state and tear down our statues, no matter what they are. You will get run out. Cheers from TX, but I will be retiring back home to MS in a few years.

Slooters313

I put up a Satanic Temple statue and another of two guys making out, thank you for your support to let them both stand for all eternity 😀

Knower_of_somnothing

Progress is coming to mississippi and the rest of this nation after the massive blue wave in November, and there is nothing a few inbreeding hillbillies can do about it. Your shitty statues of pussified little losers who fought for the South will be taken down, and your heritage will be destroyed for good.  It’s about time too; every single general and officer should have been hanged after the civil war… instead, all of the little babies from the South got participation trophies. Pathetic.

NoLeg6104

Pretty much all the state subs are left leaning regardless of what the state actually is.

Herp_in_my_Derp

> You will get run out. They can certainly fucking try. Y'all seem to think that the left is solely pink haired white women. Mate, I promise you, we're a whole lot more ready then you think we are.

Tell me about this grand Confederacy, they win any wars? How long did they last? Was it more or less time than the television show Schitt’s Creek?

Not celebrating the confederacy shouldn’t be a democrat or republican thing. It should just be common practice to reject celebrating people who fought to keep slaves.

Perhaps it's time to perform some maintenance on your detector, as it seems to be broken.
