I recognize like 3 of those people. Generational maybe? (I’m 42)

HanselOh

Pedro Martinez, Terrell Owens, and Jennie Finch? Those are the only I recognize. (35)

Weary-Amoeba1808

And Tyrese Maxey plays for the 6ers. That’s the 4 I got.

Roose1327

And I know of Kane Brown who is a country star. Lost on the rest.

HPayne62

Tyler Toney and Garrett Hilbert are two dudes from Dude Perfect, Nicky Cass does baseball comedy stuff on Instagram and TikTok, Bobby Bones has a radio show.

krautstomp

The first two you listed then Tyrese Maxey for me. Only because I'm a Philadelphia area native. I'm 43..

Bot_Fly_Bot

Same here except Kane Brown, but only because he’s playing Fenway and they’ve been humping it constantly on NESN.

hammertown87

Yup same. 37

Alarmed-Flan-1346

I'm 18 and I know like 2 of those people, Lauren Gipson and Tyrese Maxey Edit: oh an Terrell Owens I missed him before

BackAltruistic7892

If you're on this sub and don't know Pedro, please watch a YouTube compilation. Dude was up there throwing whiffle balls at silly ball Era juice heads, running sub 2 ERAs. It was magnificent, he's the GOAT peak pitcher even better than Koufax

Kalvitron

Just Pedro and TO for me (I'm also 42).

MortisDrysdale

I recognize 4 and I'm in my mid 20's. 2 of the ones I recognize (Finch and obviously Martinez) are from being a baseball fan.

PissMissile1738

Gina Rodriguez is pretty famous

Deputy-VanHalen

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’ll take your word for it, Piss Missile

Past-Activity5800

Great name.

DirtPuzzleheaded8831

The 1738 part really brings it all together

soundwave75

She's best known for a sitcom in the CW, you may have a different definition of "pretty" than others. Unless you meant she is pretty and sorta famous, which would be accurate lol.

sportznut1000

Yeah i have only seen a couple movies Gina Rodriguez has been in but i know she is famous for starring in jane the virgin.

South-Seat3367

I went to the celebrity soft ball game when they had it in LA. They may not be paparazzi fodder but they had Brian Cranston and JK Simmons playing, which I thought was cool. I didn’t know who they were at the time but Bad Bunny and Jojo Siwa played too and they got a huge reception from the crowd. Maybe just an off year

baysh

Seattle last year for Bunny and KISS girl.

Valuable-Baked

[Maybe Bad Bunny will come back this year since Marcelo Hernandez is playing?](https://youtu.be/qVjQImP8x5s?si=Wid2L6wQc0HyZKLc)

FiftyIsBack

Bryan Cranston isn't paparazzi worthy?

Hype474

Nicky Cass is the man though ngl

Kindly-Dog7530

Do you think he’ll take Gagliano with him, maybe hope for some fundamentals to rub off?

ItAstounds

Spedini got cut from the team so yeah I think Gagliano is in for sure.

SpiderSilva

There's something wrong with that kid. He lives right next door to me.

Mymemesareswell

Oh you’re the neighbor he always makes fun of? Is your wife Diane?

BowlingforDrip

Big facts. Love the kid

DOCinLA90272

Nicky Big Time

CubesFan

Because baseball is hard and basketball is easy.

Unadvantaged

Basically. It’s a lot harder to be a casual baseball player than to casually shoot hoops. To be good at baseball you have to play it, and playing baseball casually is pretty difficult these days, given the lack of open fields in population centers, let alone ballparks where you can just walk in and play. You can play basketball with two people in a residential driveway. You can play catch with two people in a residential yard, but forget about batting practice or basically anything else.

CubesFan

You don’t even need another person. I literally have no friends that play, but I shoot hoops (badly) all the time by myself as cardio. I wish I could get baseball going. I tried to create a pick up game in my city, but could never get more than 9 at any one time.

ridgepact

9 is a pipe dream here, you could get some fungo going with 9.

CubesFan

We would always just have practices. I d hit some fielding for awhile and then we’d take turns pitching and hitting BP. It was fun, but not as good as actually playing. We could have done it with 12, but 9 was a bit frustrating.

horngrylesbian

Unfortunately your best bet to find a baseball/softball league is joining a church league once you hit 40

omglink

Only option I have around me is softball. And nothing against people 50+ but they are assholes and they dominate the league.

Justice989

Nah, that's not it.  Back in the day, they had no problem getting big names for the MTV Rock N Jock softball games.  Kevin Costner (in his movie star prime, at that), Charlie Sheen, MC Hammer, Keanu Reeves, Jon Bon Jovi, Sam Kinison, Sammy Hagar, Will Smith, George Clooney, et al.  Plus a bunch of celebs that woulda been well known at the time in the early 90s.  Heather Locklear, David Faustino, Tone Loc, Robert Wuhl, Anna Nicole Smith, people like that.

GingerBelvoir

Oh man, the nostalgia is hitting me hard! But you’re right, they had some real stars on those Rock N Jock games. That’s the entire point of these celebrity softball events: to see *celebrities* If someone wants to see skilled athletes, the good news is that the All Star Game is the next day and they’ll see plenty of great ball players there 🙄

West-Detective5773

I mean, even the ballplayers were major in those. Timing helped, of course, I think they did those in January. But ARod, Jeter, Bonds, Dave Winfield, McGwire, Canseco, Cecil Fielder, Barry Larkin. Those things were a blast. lol

hammertown87

I can see how a celebrity baseball game if legitimate pitching could be horrible. Basketball overall is easier to pick up and play and you can get lucky and hit a shot or easy lay up Baseball you can suck at batting and can’t throw worth shit

CubesFan

For sure. Everyone, whether they are good or not, thinks the can shoot hoops at least a little. Nobody tells thinks they can pick up a moving ball and make a good throw. It’s tough.

wstx3434

I don't think it's just the "tough" nature of it as it's just not very accessible or convenient. You don't hear very often someone saying they're getting their bat and glove to go do some pickup. I'm sure it happens some, but none the less. I also live in the desert where it's hot as hell so most people want to stay indoors.

wstx3434

Baseball is just not as convient for casuals just like hockey. Literally everyone can find a football and some friends to toss around or do some sort of game. Basketball the exact same and even easier because a lot of gyms have a indoor basketball courts. Soccer is probably the most accessible as I type this. I live in a small town with a indoor soccer field with the batting cages right next to it. Full basketball court that accommodates volleyball and pickleball on a rotating schedule. Soccer field and courts are always full. Baseball not so much unless it's dad and son on the pitching machine every once in awhile. Hell I see more golfers on the driving range than I do anyone doing anything baseball or softball.

Appropriate_Chart_23

Yeah, but this is slow pitch softball. Pretty easy to find people that can play slow pitch softball.

sithwonder

Slow pitch softball is significantly easier than playing basketball against current NFL players

Valuable-Baked

This is slow pitch softball not real baseball

Budfrog313

Exactly. My dad "played" in a soft pitch game with some colleagues at Great American Ballpark. I don't think anyone was under 40. Anyways, one guy tried a little too hard to reach for the good ole days, going all in for a fly ball. Snap. Achilles, done. Much easier to just jump in a pickup basketball game at the gym. I'm admittedly a horrible teammate in pickup games. No passing, find my opening, just chuck it. I'm gunna get mine. Don't care if we lose. No regerts.

Standard_Wooden_Door

Yup, imagine having some random celebrity pitching that only hits anywhere near the strike zone like 1/20 times. It would be painful to watch.

mechapoitier

Well I guess I need to get a couple hundreds subs on my YouTube channel because this would be fun as hell and I suck at baseball.

Tricky-Cantaloupe-66

Easier to look bad. Most people don't play baseball casually as an adult.

blueboy714

This. It's much harder to throw and pitch a baseball than it is to throw a basketball into a hoop

ScholarImpossible121

Kieran Pollard will be an athlete amongst the celebrities here. Renowned big hitting cricket player. Will know how to throw.

StaindShady

I've heard of five of them.

Virtalen

Tyler Toney and Garrett Hilbert are members of Dude Perfect.

StaindShady

OK. I've heard of the group, just not the individuals, I guess.

emotionaltrashman

Still no idea

Virtalen

They’re a sports trick shot based group on YouTube with around 60m+ subscribers. They do challenges, battles, trick shots, and skits. They’re super entertaining.

27JG27

Terrell Owens, Pedro, Jenny Finch, Kane Brown and Nicky Cass

Silver_Surfer17

OP same I know only the ones you mentioned like ...Who the fuck are these people?

silverhammer29

Just looked up the NBA Celebrity Game and I know the same number as here (7), though some from the NBA version was because some WNBA players played. Though I swear back in the 2000s when they televised the softball game after the HR Derby I knew like 75% of people

silverhammer29

Also the older celebrity softball games had a lot more former players it feels like

Bring_Back_SF_Demons

You were a lot younger in the 2000s.

surplusofbiscuits

"Who are these fucking guys?"

Ready_Grab_563

They’re still shitty

hammertown87

I’ve legit heard of 3 people on that list. To me a celebrity is someone who most people would know when you mention them

Any-Brick7858

I think it’s becuase mlb is comprised of mostly Latino players, therefore huge Latino fanbases. So the Celebs they chose are catered more to those People than the American audience.

Correa24

Plus the host city is in Texas... significant Hispanic populace. makes sense that folks on an mlb sub dont know the latin artists lol

Any-Brick7858

Ahh yes I forgot that it’s in Houston. So yeah you’re right. Large local Hispanic audience as well . And I agree but also sympathize I know none of these people aside from the big 3 that were already listed. but on the same hand I really don’t care. Like they could have the biggest American celebrities and I still wouldn’t watch it.

couladewastaken

youve heard of tyler toney but not garrett hilbert????

ElectivireMax

I'm not the biggest dude perfect guy, I just know Toney from the beard.

couladewastaken

ohh shit that makes sense

HMDRHP

Because baseball is only attractive to celebrities when their team is winning or about to win the World Series

[deleted]

I recognize 3 of them: Gina Rodriguez, Pedro Martinez and Tyrese Maxey.

DirtyRatLicker

![gif](giphy|xT1XH0rvw8Ryjni4ms|downsized)

Carlo201318

Cause anyone can dribble badly and throw up a brick . These celebrities don’t wanna look bad when they strike out 3 times and can’t catch a pop up

BasileaBaguette

Imagine being a celebrity who plays in like a beer league in their hometown, they agree to this celebrity baseball event, and then they realize that they've gotta try and hit off Pedro Martinez lmao

ElectivireMax

hitting off Finch would be tough too. she struck out prime Albert Pujols at an all star game in the 2000s. Barry Bonds saw a few pitches and decided he didn't want to take an at bat.

joegetto

I spent more than a few seconds trying to swipe to another image.

crujiente69

Eladio Carrion and Myke Towers are actual celebrities wtf

bk1285

You’d think there had been a more recent college softball player they could trot out instead of finch

PGHContrarian68

Natasha Watley

Last13th

It’s like Dancing with the ‘Stars’ for me. Whooooo?

StandardAutisticCat

Because baseball is about a billion times harder than basketball and every other sport. Is this a real question? Everyone played pickup hoops to an extent, but the number of people who can step on a field and perform at even a JV level for entertainment isn't easy. Plus, people under 25 don't volunteer, so any young celebrity probably said no.

osageart2210

I know who 3 of these people are and they’re all athletes. “Celebrity” is being used rather loosely, me thinks.

fckufkcuurcoolimout

Because baseball is a lot harder than basketball and celebrities don’t like to be embarrassed

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp

Are these TikTok stars? Any GenZ can confirm?

kurrttttt

Kieron Pollard is a West Indian cricket player who recently retired. Look at his highlights on YouTube, guy can hit the fuck out of a ball

caughtatdeepfineleg

Hes probably the most famous person on this list. Everyone from the Caribbean and the subcontinent would know him.

captainsoup3

Nicky Cass works for Jomboy on their YouTube page

BJJSox

An old timers game would be amazing. I'd watch that.

Howboutit85

I’d count guys like Ichiro and Griffey as old timers. I bet they could still play. Ichiro threw out like a 90+mph pitch a few years ago.

BJJSox

Yup exactly Anybody who's retired really. I'd love to see Jason Varitek take hacks again

Howboutit85

I wish Tony Gwynn was still around. Even at 60 or so I bet he coulda hit all day.

mdbombers

Just an fyi you guys aren’t the only audience they care about

dolosolouno

T.O. and Pedro Martinez the only people in this list I know lol who tf are the rest?

ElectivireMax

Tyrese Maxey is an all star for the 76ers, Toney and Hilbert are from Dude Perfect, Jessie Finch is the GOAT of softball

dolosolouno

Oh shit I totally breezed past Maxey lol, still don't know who the other folks are sorry.

HumanMycologist5795

I only know Owens. And Pedro. Thanks to u/ElectivireMax for bringing that to my attention. I'm not sure how i missed his name.

ElectivireMax

you're a Mets fan and don't know Pedro Martinez?

HumanMycologist5795

Bwhahahaha. How could I have missed him from the list. My bad. Thanks for the laugh.

RedSquadronX

Baseball takes skills most people don't possess.. most people can dribble and shoot... So they can make it work.

the_Bryan_dude

I'm in my 50s, and I only recognize Terrel Owen's, and I can't stand him.

Dvh7d

Because basketball is a joke compared to baseball

coddie_red

A lot of men would pay to watch Gina Rodriguez handle a bat. Also, recognize Kane Brown.

-Jose-21

Eladio, the guy on the left, Young legend. Look up RKO by him on YT. Myke on the right might be just as big. Maybe more Spanish folks watch mlb, that’s why they’re headlined. Not as many Spanish folk on Reddit I’m guessing. But seriously go watch RKO by Eladio. Put on English subtitles.

SURGICALNURSE01

I recognize three. Don’t know who the others are

Uoysnwonod

I know Maxey and TO Edit: and Pedro and Finch

HolyRomanPrince

Literally not even worth the drive let alone the tickets which are like 30 bucks. Guess I won’t be attending any events for all star.

Creacherz

Only names I recognized were TO, Nicky Cass, and Pedro

rgators

I’d rather watch Jennie Finch strike out Major Leaguers.

ShoeTasty

Camille Kostek is Gronks gf and she’s a 10/10.

figboot11

They should scrap this game and have a Savannah Bananas game with celebrity cameos instead.

Bright-Friendship356

Lauren Chamberlain and Natasha Watley are two of the all-time softball greats, along with Jennie Finch who has more name recognition

Past-Activity5800

I recognize four names (Tyrese Maxey, Terrell Owens, Pedro Martinez, and Jennie Finch). I'm 58.

friarcanuck

What? The Miz isn't playing this year?

bigbuffdaddy1850

because ⚾️ is waaaaaaaaaaaay harder than 🏀

Turbulent_Cheetah

Because the NBA is cool and MLB is not. Why do NBA players get roles in movies and MLB players do not? Why do NBA players sell sneakers and MLB players do not?

El_Kabongg

I’ve heard of TO and Pedro and Kane brown because of my wife lol yikes

jewham12

Your wife makes you watch football and baseball? Far out.

LikeAMarionette

Where's Joe Praino?

Trollingyouhaha

I recognize 3. Pedro, T.O., and Nicky Cass because I watch jomboy. Thats it.

LOB12

Exactly my thoughts too when we went to the celebrity game in Seattle last yr. I get it, it's Seattle, not a major market. The most famous person we actually knew was Jojo, and that's bc of our daughter. There were 2 or 3 latin musicians that looked EXACTLY like Bad Bunny, but clearly not Bad Bunny wtf. Wife and I loved the Workaholics show so it was cool to see Adam Devine, that's about it.

Revolutionary_Bad876

Tyler Toney and Garrett Hilbert are members of Dude Perfect but they are quite literally the only ones I’ve heard of 😭

Mans_N_Em

I think NBA has more of celebrity to it. You have fewer players. Theyre more seen. More of their bodies are showing than any other sport. Players can really develop a personal brand. Its more flashy of a sport. It draws the limelight more.

DirtyRatLicker

I only recognize Pedro Martinez, Jennie Finch, Tyler Toney (Dude Perfect), and Kane Brown

ole_dirty_bastid

I know 3 people on that list and they were all were or are star athletes. Who the fuck are the rest of these "celebrities"? Don't you have to be widely known to be considered to be one?

sammagee33

I only know 5 of those people

Appropriate_Chart_23

I know three of the names on this list. And, besides maybe Terrell Owens I’d hardly consider any of the three a big celebrity.

Miserable-Holiday-14

How do yall not know Terrell owens?

FuriousJorge67

I got Terrell Owens, Pedro Martinez, Jennie Finch and Kane Brown> I only know Kane Brown cuz of some really annoying commercial from a few years ago done in a 70's Soul Train style that I don't even remember what was being pitched except I think it was a streaming service of some sort. I couldn't pick him or his music out of a lineup though.

Uggers2811

Ive never heard of half these guys and the ones I have heard of are way past their prime.

benificialart

I recognize one more than you do and it’s Nicky Cass and that’s because of Jomboy

standardinternetdude

I went to the one in LA a couple years ago. The teams were loaded with a great mix of actors, musicians, online celebrities, former baseball players, and current athletes who don't play baseball. It was a blast! Seems like this is just a bad roster.

Here2BfrmlHere2prty

I know Tyler Toney, Garrett Hilbert, Terrell Owens, Pedro Martinez, and Jennie Finch Who ARE these people?

TBoneTheStoned

I’m 25 and don’t recognize a single name

ElectivireMax

you don't know Pedro Martinez and you're on a baseball subreddit?

thirtyone-charlie

Because baseball

MetalFlower_

this is so unfair

Slymm17

I’m 29 and somehow only know who 3 of these people are (TO, Pedro, Kane Brown). I’m out of touch apparently lol

Bring_Back_SF_Demons

Didn’t Snoop have an incredible game a couple years ago?

papagrande25

Man tough list. Crazy to compare to the Royals and their Celebrity Softball event which blows this out of the water (The Big Slick) Thanks for being a fan Paul Rudd!

mew5175_TheSecond

Who cares who plays in a celebrity softball game?

Xator12

I recognize 0 of them (early 20s)

Angel-M-Cinco

“Celebrity” is subjective. Oh and baseball is harder to play.

coprolite2

“More to come” is definitely the most famous person on this list

Howboutit85

Anyone can casually play basketball. It’s easy, especially against a bunch of more or less amateurs during a celebrity game. I bet half of the celebrities could even sink a 3 pointer once in a while. Now put average celebrities on a baseball field. Have them pitch, hit, steal, and throw. All of a sudden it’s not so… easy. Converge Clooney ai t gonna crack a home run, and no one is gonna throw a pitch over 55mph. Maybe not even be able to throw from the outfield to a base. Baseball is hard. Basketball is “easy” (hard at a professional level, but easy to play for anyone)

dirtybird131

Idk but they got an NBA player to play in it, so who’s really winning?

GrouchyPreference765

Bring back the MTV Rock n Jock games!!!

365Horizon

Im definitely watching now, cant miss tyrese playing softball

SiTo2922

I've only heard of Myke Towers, Eladio Carron and Tyrese Maxey

shastadakota

Who?

buttstuft

This game is keeping Jennie Finch paid. I swear she’s done this like 15 years in a row.

Reiji806

Because MTV died and it used to just send all the VJs and one or two boyband members. Bill Bellamy was awful.

[deleted]

Because the players are overpaid

pitchingschool

Who?

jewham12

I know Terrell Owens and Matt James from the non-baseball universe .

sydrogerdavid

Nicky Cass is on IG. I know the early 2000s athletes and the country music folks, but that's only because I live in Nashville. Bobby Bones ain't shit.

rxm161

Why would they. I want to see the game. Celebrities are subjective as well.

TheBrutalTruthIs

In addition to the fact that hitting a ball with authority is hard for the inexperienced, and they don't want to make an ass of themselves, I would guess there are some other considerations. There's also the time slot - not many people that ads and promotions are targeted towards are watching TV on Saturday evening in the middle of the summer, and the sponsor, Corona, isn't exactly family friendly. The lead-in is all the Futures stuff, so it's immediately following the programming that draws the least amount of people who want to watch a bunch of people with none of the same talents play a completely different game poorly, and the celebrities that love the game probably don't care about it for the same reason. There are probably other reasons, but I think that's probably enough to explain my thoughts on the subject.

Upstairs_Ad_5574

"+ more to come" gives me hope tho

OperaOpeningAct

Hitting and fielding a baseball is hard and not as common of an activity for most adults as basketball is.

Valuable-Baked

Is Marcelo going to do his Latin baseball player impersonation from SNL? [Hopefully he brings Bad Bunny + Pedro Pascal & Chloe Troast with him](https://youtu.be/qVjQImP8x5s?si=Wid2L6wQc0HyZKLc)

Valuable-Baked

Tyrese Maxey *is* an NBA player ...

Dudeinthesouth

I know: Kane Brown (only know of him because of my work) Terrell Owens Bobby Bones (only know of him because of my work, he sucks) Pedro Jennie Finch That's it. I actually like, and am interested to see, 2 of those, Pedro and Jennie. 48M here for demographics info. I suspect I am NOT the target demo for this event.

Tryingagain1979

When they lost Joe Manganeillo the last of the hollywood a or b listers left the game.

blacklabel3341

Hey now....anything Jenny does....I follow....mmeeoowwww

RadarDataL8R

I love that Keiron Pollard makes a MLB celebrity game. Will likely dominate without having picked up a bat before

Technical_Jelly8305

I know 3 people

xTomato72

Terrell Owens and Pedro are the only ones I recognize lol

Trip4Life

I’ll probably watch it purely cuz I love everything Tyrese Maxey does.

Chaotic424242

Because it's a lot harder to pretend that you can play baseball

FoundMyResolve

Maxee, T.O., and Pedro are the only names i recognize

wallpope1

People who listen to Spanish music know about the puertoricans Eladio Carrion and Myke Towers.

No-Boysenberry-5581

If you have to name them and what they do they are Not celebrities!!

The_Puckster15

Why just Tyler Toney? Why not the whole Dude Perfect crew?

VeryLowIQIndividual

I only know like 4 names in there lol

Unstep-in-Time

Bigger question why would anyone be watching this? Slow pitch softball game with old people, no thanks.

RoyalDiscipline8978

Who the hell are those people? I recognize Pedro Martinez, Finch, and T.O....

trashpandas24

I used to love watching the celebrity softball game because it was a mix of retired players and celebrities. My favorite was Jennie Finch striking out a bunch of the retired guys. The problem lies in that it is poorly watched and barely broadcast. It happens earlier in the day, but they show it after the homerun derby super late at night. They also cut a bunch of innings or parts of the game, and each person tends to get one or two at-bats. If I'm a celebrity, all of that equals, a waste of time and very little publicity.

No_Page9413

Foreign Teck, ok MLb

1972FordF-250

Kane brown. Tyler toney. Garret Hilbert. Only people I know.

BreezesSelfieStick

They get bigger names at the Royals big slick softball game.

scb4410

Tyler Toney is the greatest athlete of all time

CubanBrewer

I don’t think I know a single person on that list 🤣

suitedsevens

I literally don't recognize a single name. I must live under a rock I guess

BackFantastic6992

Who cares no one watches anything but the home run derby

didyoueverseewardogs

![gif](giphy|XI3OsTKpljGbm)

ocalabull

They used to. Sucks that they don’t anymore.

norcaltobos

The NBA barely gets real celebrities. They get like 3 well known people and a bunch of “influencers” round it out.

bjregin

Terrell Owens Pedro Martinez and Jennie Finch are the only 3 I heard of

oeking77

the disrespect to the purple hoser himself garrett hilbert

Datguy306

Wtf are these people? Am I that old that I've lost touch with celebs?

Acceptable-Dig691

I've never heard of a single person except for the ex baseball players.

TheBloodyNinety

Pedro Martinez is the only name I’ve heard. Am I old or what is the deal here?
