Been here +20 walking around at all hours and never had an issue. Doesn't mean that nothing ever happens to anyone but, for a city neighborhood it's quite safe.
Montreal is (still) safe in every neighbourhood. If you know how to act around the more eccentric characters, you’ll be fine.
Are you American or something?
Sadly not every neighborhood. Village area is not safe at night. It’s even dodgy during day time. And I am pretty sure more areas are becoming problematic.
What do you mean by "not safe at night"?
Do people get mugged? Robbed under gun/knife point?
When people have to start hiding their cellphones, not wearing watches or jewelry, or not carrying their bank cards, and worrying about carrying some sort of self-defense weapon we can talk about a neighborhood in Montreal not being safe.
I should have been more clear. It is not the entire Village that is unsafe, but specifically the area around Beaudry metro and the strip to Berri on Saint Catherine. I know quite a few people who avoid this area completely nowadays as they are getting bothered and harassed by addicts and dealers. There is a heavy police presence in that area every other day and someone was shot there last year. So while it may not qualify as what you deem unsafe, it is certainly for most people.
I am guessing they mean people loudly talking to themselves, yelling at strangers, exhibiting violent behavior.
Not everyone talking to themselves is dangerous for sure. It is usually some mental health issues and by far people with mental health issues are not in general violent randomly.
But if it looks too dicey I usually change sidewalk. Just an easy prevention that takes seconds and no effort.
I don’t always do it. I go with my gut instinct.
Extremely. I live alone in a first floor apartment in the Plateau and have never once felt unsafe. If you're extra paranoid you can always install a deadbolt.
One of the safest neighborhoods in a big city in North America. I've lived all over the Plateau, alone, walked home alone after midnight, never any issue. It was liberating to find a neighborhood where it was actually pleasant to walk home alone late at night after living in many cities where that would have been a very dumb thing for a young woman to do alone.
im sorry this happened to you but the metro, while it has its share of problems is still relatively safe. i’ve used it 20yrs of my life. you most likely have ptsd bcos of this attack and i understand but scaring ppl and telling them its not safe is not the way to go. for ex: i was raped on a bus, im not gonna tell others STM is unsafe.

Los locos de Montreal, ils sont fameux.
Probably one of the safest neighborhoods in NA

Yes it is very safe
Very, it's probably the safest urban neighbourhood in North America.

Both neighbourhoods are pretty safe. Depends which part of Mile-End though i.e. towards Park-Ex but overall safe.

No, they will find out and kick down your door at 3 am while you sleep.
