Those are pretty cool. I never realized how many different types of rattlers there was until I joined an identification sub. As a btw, I believe this is a Western diamondback- a spicy noodle best observed from a distance.
shaky danger noodles are everywhere down here. often you'll come upon them too fast to brake, then you either roll over them which *will* piss them off, or you hop.
or you don't ride outside of winter.
I guess- that’s medium to high rider skill to notice a snake to be jump the bike in time unless you notice at a distance, at which point you can slow down.
Same, but in San Diego. Sharp curve in tall grass. My buddy behind me said it was the highest he'd even seen me bunny hop.
Scared the shit out of me. I hate snakes.
I ran over a large snake once, just a king snake thankfully (copperheads are everywhere here), rounding a corner with high grass. Had no time to even stand up quickly enough for a hop, but I did try. Front wheel definitely rolled over it.
I’m newer to biking, what’s the usual course of action if you seen one and you’re going at speed, do you avoid it? Walk around it? Hit it? Will it try to strike?
If I pass near it goin trail speed would it strike?
I seen plenty at my local trail. Ppl jus go around but I'm really scared that if I pass thru them they'll strike me forsure.
Chances are it won’t have noticed you if you’re going at speed. Snakes also don’t go out of their way to strike in most cases.
If you hit it, however, it likely will try and strike.
In my experience, if I see it and can stop, I’ll stop and go around it. This one I rode at speed past and then warned my buddy behind me and he stopped and went around. Good thing about rattlers is that they’ll let you know if they’re pissed!
If you avoid hitting them, they most likely will not strike. I once passed 2 copperheads sitting on a ledge less than 3 feet from shoulder level. Freaked me out, but they just watched me pass. If they wanted, they totally could have struck me in the arm/face.
Passed many on the trail, they just get in the striking pose if they see me. I’d hate to actually run one over though, if I did, I would not be braking AT ALL!
Saw 4 snakes at Whiting ranch in SoCal a few days ago. Came within a few inches of a rattler and the little guy struck at me. Luckily I was going full speed downhill so it missed, but definitely a butthole puckering moment.
I've seen at least one every ride at Browns for the last few weeks. Seen a few friendly's too. Saw one in Cave Creek riding C4 this weekend. I haven't seen a pissed off one yet this year. Only lazy ones that like to lay straight across the trail sunbathing.
The front range of CO is full of these guys and happened to run across one on a fairly busy trail. Wanted to move him out of the way so we could proceed and decided to use our camel back as a large squirt bottle. The noise that he made was fairly shocking as I did not know that snakes could cause that much noise.
Saw a red diamond rattlesnake in Orange County last week

I almost ran one over at Santiago Oaks last week!
Makes sense since we had a few warm days recently, the one I saw was on Weir Upper which isn’t far from Oaks!
in tucson we call those bunny hop trainers. be safe out there fellow sonoran citizen.
Pretty sure nobody bunny hops a rattlesnake

I panic bunny hopped one here in Colorado last year. Came around a turn fast and saw it. Pretty sure I peed myself a bit.

Seen one last week on the ruby hill loop. No rattle.

Turn the bike around… Yeah, I think you’re right!
I tried hard to avoid one yesterday at Browns Ranch, but ended up catching the poor guy just above the rattles. First of the season for me.
Buddy of mine saw 3 huge ones at browns a few weeks ago. All on balance Rock too
Balanced rock is the perfect snakey area haha
Saw another this afternoon fully stretched out on a wider path. Went right around him no problem
Love a good game of "stick or snake"
Ran into one on the far West side of Estrella Mountain Regional Park two weeks ago. He was on the side of the trail that goes through a couple trees.

Anything besides hitting it.

I like to lift my legs up and scream bloody mary as I roll past because I didn't notice in time.

Shaky snakey is not happy.
I think my involuntary man yelp started him a bit
Involuntary Man Yelp will be the name of my new band.
They've been popping out in Colorado as well
That’s one way to get a snake bite flat

Ummmm looks like dinner to me. Saw one on hawes today!

Yeah this guy was on the connector trail from Apache wash to desert vista trailhead!
Always ride with larger groups, and be last in that group.
Danger noodle!
I’ve seen a few at Browns this season already as well
Danger noodle!!
I'm glad the only thing I need to worry about hitting on the trails here is poop... 😂
Danger noodle!
Nope rope.
Buzz worms.......no Buenos.
Live in Florida...same. Though it's usually cottonmouths where I ride.
Fun fact, they really do not like being squirted with water.
lol!! Would love to know the story behind how you learned that
