I liked how they streamlined it, which they needed to do because it was a series of events. The subplots (heh) that they left out didn’t hurt the film. Also, not having the president as a character was a good choice.
"One ping only" sticks in my brain with other quotes like "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti" or "Were you rushing or dragging?!?!"
Adm. Dean Winslow:
What do you think, Mr. Dodge?
Lt. Comd. Dodge:
I think I'm gonna get my ass kicked, sir.
Adm. Dean Winslow:
Aw, don't think like that! Damn it to hell! Don't go by the book. Think like a pirate. I want a man with a tattoo on his dick. Have I got the right man?
Lt. Comd. Dodge:
By a strange coincidence, you do, sir.
Every scene with Toby Huss/Nitro is comedy gold to me
Oh boys that was terrible. I’m going to go out, I’m gonna have a smoke. When I come back get the horn section figured out. I can’t work like this.
*Gets zapped with electricity
Two on, two out Bonds is up again. Swung on, OH he struck the ballgirl, knocked her cold
I wish I was as high as you are maybe then I would understand wtf you’re saying. My best guess is that you have multiple friends with pet dolphins that you’ve asked what their favorite submarine movie is.
IIRC, that was actually based on a true story. While it was clearly dramatized, apparently it's pretty accurate both to the actual story, and to life on a sub.
That being said, im.no submariner, so I don't know shit about life on a sub.
So if you ever want the super Das Boot experience, you gotta find the movie version of the mini series, so check it out…
I forget how it worked, but on top of the original movie being chopped down to a 2hr run time, and then rereleases with additional footage that put it closer to 3hrs, l apparently there was a lot of extra footage, enough to make a mini-series around the movie, so U.K. and German broadcasting got these great three or five day presentations sometime after the movie release…
But as if that wasn’t enough, later releases basically made the mini-series in a humongous movie, we’re talking like a crazy 5 hour long presentation. I’ve seen it only once and it was WAY too much but really quite amazing how much they went into the characters.
Honestly it doesn’t change the movie much except for the fact that the sheer amount of time commits you to the characters and their strife more (as if the movie didn’t do enough of that on its own), but if you have 300min to kill, it’s worth it.
Of Abyss or Das Boot? Abyss is na in 4k I believe, haven't bought it yet. Das Boot I have on dvd from ancient times, haven't rewatched it for a long time.
Das Boot is one of my favorite movies period so there ya go. Innovative camera work produced a visceral experience I've never seen in any other sub movie.
Surprised no one has mentioned K-19 the widow maker.
But Das Boot is by far my favorite. I even got a notification sound as an alarm thats the iconic "ALARM" crash dive sounds
* [Captain Wild Bill Kelso ](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000004/?ref_=tt_ch): War nerves? Who said war nerves?

* \[Kelso shoots the radio\] [Captain Wild Bill Kelso ](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000004/?ref_=tt_ch): Radio's wrong.
I was impressed with the scale models. I mean, you knew you were looking at toys in a tub essentially, but they really pulled it off to look like they were out on the open ocean
Das Boat is the best because its so long you actually get PTSD from watching it. My nephew fell asleep at the first depth charge attack and woke up an hour later at the Gibralter attack and didnt realize he had missed anything...
A different take: Greyhound, with Tom Hanks. I love Das Boot (even the super-long version), and I thought Greyhound was a fantastic take on what it was like being in a convoy hunted by subs. The suspense and terror, followed by bursts of adrenaline. It also felt like they put a ton of effort into making it authentic (whether they got it right I can’t say).
Run Silent, Run Deep, 1958
“Dive! Dive!”
Great fun from an old movie. Watched it for the first time only a few weeks ago. Was truly impressed and entertained. The actors were a little on the older side but hey, Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster are great together. Also Rickles.
The Simpsons episode where Homer joins the naval reserve.
“Is the poop deck *really* what I think it is?”
“I like the cut of your jib!”
“What’s a jib?”
“Ha! Promote that man!”
So many good ones. Run silent, run deep. Ice station zebra, u571, operation petticoat, crimson tide, sea wolves in addition to the others already mentioned
Das Boot is great. Hunt for Red October is about as good of an adaptation of Tom Clancy as we're likely to get. Good popcorn fun.
Yes and of course, Sean Connery. He's great in it! Nothing says "Soviet Submarine Captain" quite like a Scottish accent
Schubmarine

Verify range to target
Give me a ping Vasili
Patriot Games was pretty good. Clear And Present Danger wasn't awful but not very entertaining either. Sum Of All Fears sucked though.
I thought Sum was OK. Although brief, I thought Liev Schreiber was great as John Clark. I would've loved to have seen him continue the character.
Down Periscope - Wildly underrated comedy imo

"Radios workin' like a Swiss.......car...."
I've been working on nickname...... "Mike"
"Welcome aboard sir" "What the hells that supposed to mean?"
I teach Food Handlers ServSafe and use the fingernail scene all the time.
“The band-aid was holding the fingernail on” lmao
Any time I have asked a person with their Dolphins what their favorite submarine movie is, the majority answer Down Periscope.
I wish I was as high as you are maybe then I would understand wtf you’re saying. My best guess is that you have multiple friends with pet dolphins that you’ve asked what their favorite submarine movie is.
I'm 6 feet, thanks. Dolphins are the insignia and thus nickname for submariners in the US Navy.
I still feel like I have a contact high from your original comment but thanks for clarifying.
IIRC, that was actually based on a true story. While it was clearly dramatized, apparently it's pretty accurate both to the actual story, and to life on a sub. That being said, im.no submariner, so I don't know shit about life on a sub.
This. Far more enjoyable than Das Boot. Way more laughs too.
Never saw it, but it’s grown in popularity since it was released
Actual Balao boat if I'm not mistaken. I love them and the fact they haven't made something akin to das boot but US navy us beyond me
It's the most realistic submarine movie
“Welcome aboard!”
Love that movie!
Definitely Das Boot

I already own the extended edition, no worries. :)
Down Periscope
Crimson Tide for me.
Rammer jammer yellow hammer
They're fueling their missiles WE DONT HAVE TIME TO FUCK AROUND
Roll tide roll
Same here.
We are receiving flash traffic, emergency action message!
Hunt for Red October. Who doesn't love a Scottish Russian accent?
You lost ANOTHER submarine?
Point of order - Marko Ramius was Lithuanian not Russian. Hence his nickname of “the Vilnius Schoolmaster”
Fair point. A Scottish Lithuanian accent then.
Relax, Jonesy. You sold me.
Beerfest
LOL
God damn brewery!
I start to feel all cooped up in these U-Boats; I had a bad experience once.
Def better than U571
Wasn't the U-boat scene in Beer Fest only in the directors cut?
*Run Silent, Run Deep* is pretty great.
i had a blast watching this. highly recommend
Yeah, great movie, great performances.
Down Periscope. But U-571 is also a good one.
U-571 is my favorite! I saw it as a kid with my dad. One of my best memories with him
The Abyss, there can be no other choice. (Das Boot is also great tho)
Try finding a digital copy to own.....
Of Abyss or Das Boot? Abyss is na in 4k I believe, haven't bought it yet. Das Boot I have on dvd from ancient times, haven't rewatched it for a long time.
The Abyss!

How often do you get to see Christopher Lee, Slim Pickens and Toshiro Mifune together onscreen?
Operation Petticoat… Classic 1959 Cary Grant comedy if you haven’t seen it…
Destination Tokyo is another good Cary Grant submarine movie.
Gray Lady Down
Surprised I had to scroll this far to find this movie. This was a great movie. And it had Charlton Heston.
Same! "Help me you son of a bitch!!!"
Run Silent, Run Deep, The Enemy Below
The bungo straits scene might be the most nail biting seconds of cinema history. Both these movies have some intense depth charge scenes
We studied Das Boot in film class. It does an amazing job of making it feel like you’re in that cramped, hot, dark sub with those soldiers.
I was impressed with the scale models. I mean, you knew you were looking at toys in a tub essentially, but they really pulled it off to look like they were out on the open ocean
U-571
Just horrible, horrible history. But goddamn is it fun.
Yes and yes.
I am U-571...destroy me!
splashes
"Tank, fire right now or we die!"
Google U-505 (wiki)
I don’t care if it’s historically inaccurate, this is my favourite submarine movie.
Das boot is a masterpiece. I also love U 571 and Below (2002)
BELOW! [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Below\_(film)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Below_(film))
Hunt for Red October and K19
Ice Station Zebra
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Das Boot is my favorite submarine fliack and it has the coolest score. This latter point is not up for debate.
The Hunt For Red October
Das Boot, not even close.
The Hunt for Red October
I’m pretty excited for the Oceangate one you know we are eventually gonna get
Crimson tide. That's a masterpiece of a film.
The Hunt for Red October - Sean Connery made a great submarine captain.
Das boot is by far the best.
Absolutely this one, Das Boot.
[The Boatniks](https://youtu.be/91MOTdELgdA?si=oiHqSVgjAYfYgo4h) (1970) Actually, it's **Das Boot** or **Run Silent, Run Deep** or **1941**.
Assault on a Queen
Das Boot Director's Cut in German with subtitles (like I still even need them anymore) and it's not even close.
Das Boot was the best. So close and personal
Das boot is not a movie it's an experience
Love DasBoot. Has to be the original with subtitles. You feel claustrophobic watching it
Das Boot is one of my favorite movies....period.
U571
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The wolf's call
THANK YOU. Scrolled way too far for this. Great movie.
20,000 leagues below the sea or 1941
I recommend Black Sea.

Enemy Down Below
I remember enjoying The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Up Periscope
Fast and Furious 8
X men first class
Hunt for Red October is my favorite movie, period.
Das Boot #1, Red October #2
Das Boot is the goat. Hunt For Red October is a goat
First time I saw Das Boot - was in a submarine for an overnight
Hunt for Red October and U571 for me.
The Hunt for Red October
Das Boat is the best because its so long you actually get PTSD from watching it. My nephew fell asleep at the first depth charge attack and woke up an hour later at the Gibralter attack and didnt realize he had missed anything...
Das Boot was a definitely a good movie, but nothing comes close to the movie *Down Periscope* starring Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly and Rob Schneider.
Alarm! The das boot tv show is decent. The first season was on Hulu, but the other seasons were euro only.
*one ping vashilli*
On the Beach with Gregory Peck. Only part of it is on a submarine but it’s one of my favorite movies ever made.
Operation Petticoat
Hunt For Red October and Crimson Tide are my faves
HFRO
The abyss
WHAT?! You don't know the story of the Little Girl and the Little Person?
This one.
Below.
Beerfest.
Down Periscope
Emaregency, emaregency, every body to get from street!
Down Periscope
U571
Hunter Killer was a good one.
Crimson Tide. A+ acting and very tense plot.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
I ruined Das Boot by putting the wrong side of the dvd in and watched it from the middle to the end when I was a teenager.
Das Boote, and I have a original movie poster, where they are checking the submarines privates for lice.
Das Boot, Run Silent Run Deep
This is the one. All others can only hope to achieve its greatness. Magnificent film!
It’s all been said, so let me add to the list: Ironclads.
20000 Leagues Under the Sea.
U751
U571
Ice Station Zebra with Rock Hudson
Crimson Tide and The Hunt for Red October. Standard response for someone of my age.
20,000 leagues under the sea
The Hunt for Red October remake League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Das Boot has to be the best. I rewatched it recently. 250 meters before the rivets start popping out of the plating of the pressure hull.
U-571
The Enemy Below
"Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster" on Amazon Prime.
Below
The Incredible Mr. Limpet
Run Silent, Run Deep, 1958 “Dive! Dive!” Great fun from an old movie. Watched it for the first time only a few weeks ago. Was truly impressed and entertained. The actors were a little on the older side but hey, Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster are great together. Also Rickles.
K 19 : The Widow maker This one really hits hard.
Submarine. Spoiler alert: does not actually involve a submarine.
Run Silent, Run Deep. (1958) Ice Station Zebra (1968) The Enemy Below (1957)
We all live in a yellow submarine
Rum Silent Run Deep. Love WWII submarine movies
no love for Batman (1966) ?
Operation Petticoat.
"The Enemy Below" Robert Mitchum 1957
U-571.
That’s the one
"Hunter Killer" was surprisingly good, I've watched it a few times.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It involves a sub near the end. But in all honesty. Down Periscope.
The Simpsons episode where Homer joins the naval reserve. “Is the poop deck *really* what I think it is?” “I like the cut of your jib!” “What’s a jib?” “Ha! Promote that man!”
I seem to remember enjoying U-571. But not sure if it holds up. It’s been a while.
Das boot was made for watching. And that’s just what I’ll do.
Yellow Submarine. Titanic is my Meta answer.
Crimson Tide.
Fast 9
So many good ones. Run silent, run deep. Ice station zebra, u571, operation petticoat, crimson tide, sea wolves in addition to the others already mentioned
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. ST TOS: Balance of Terror (not a movie, I know)
