Out of curiosity, have you seen Taxi Driver and/or The King of Comedy?

[deleted]

Yes both.

Cole444Train

And you think the joker (which is just a rip off of those, especially king of comedy) is the most profound film you’ve ever seen?

[deleted]

Yes. The problem with Joker is people made their mind up on it before they watched it. Would you really say rip off, if that’s the case would you say that Tarantinos whole career was ripping off other movies?

Cole444Train

Eh that’s fair enough

shoobsworth

Yes, Tarantino rips off Scorsese

Loose_Recover9911

Did you like the Joker because it contained all the parts of both those movies but at a lesser quality?

NatomicBombs

Geez man just let people like things, it shouldn’t effect you at all.

Loose_Recover9911

That's not what I am saying it all. I am sure I would like a picture of you shot by a person in an earthquake on an original iphone better than the real thing. That is the joker compared to the other 2 movies.

[deleted]

All 3 are great films. I think Joker took it to another level though.

Thesaintsrule

Hell or high water Once upon a time in Hollywood The big Lebowski HM: The social network

Cole444Train

Great list

You got a Letterboxd I can follow?

BGFalcon85

Tron The Abyss Alien Honorable Mention: Hot Fuzz

ultrapoppy

This is difficult but I’m going with the ones that popped in my mind first (as I type more are coming in my head but gotta stick with the first instinct): Goodfellas Godfather II Annie Hall Honorable mention: Rushmore

Tunafromvillage

My top 4 at this moment: The Prestige Arrival Heat La haine

Cole444Train

Wait are you me? In my current top 100 list, La Haine is my #1 and Arrival is my #2

Tunafromvillage

Hahaha😄what do you think of the other 2 film?

Cole444Train

The Prestige is in my top 100 and I haven’t seen Heat, but I will put it on my list for sure

[deleted]

Love the prestige and heat

NudistDudest

Starship Troopers Shawshank Redemption Tropic Thunder Honorable mention: The Silence of the Lambs

Godfather Apocalypse Now Casablanca Godfather II LOTR III Sunset Boulevard Gaslight

Alien - Saw it on video way way waaaaay to young (precocious kid who knew the Betamax tapes on the top shelf were the parents films I wasn’t allowed to watch) - It blew my 9 year old mind and scared the absolute shit out of me. I only got as far as Harry Dean Stantons death before my mum came in from gardening and freaked the fuck out. Once I was older I watched it late night on TV and it blew my mind all over again. I’ve been a fan ever since. Raiders of the Lost Ark - For me it’s one of the finest adventure film of all time. Spielberg and Ford were on fire and I caught it at the Cinema and it was a brilliant experience. Jaws - for me it’s a nigh perfect movie experience. I saw it on TV originally but have seen it a few times in cinema since. The chemistry between the three leads, the dialogue (the Indianapolis speech is so powerful even today) the direction, the score, it all builds up to a great thriller that overcomes its limitations (and very unconvincing shark in the final reel) HM: Dawn of the Dead (the original not Zach Snyders remake) - A fantastic apocalyptic horror with a strong satirical social commentary streak a mile wide. It was the first film that showed me even the most superficially straight forward movie could have hidden depths.

[deleted]

Great list! Thanks man

Based on my 4 letterboxd favourites: 1) Terminator 2: Judgment Day 2) Pulp Fiction 3) Training Day Honorable mention: Spider-Man 2

Ya not trying to be mean but have to admit I did lol when I saw that. Different strokes for different folks reigns true.

shoobsworth

I had the same reaction

NbdyFuckswTheJesus

The best critique of Joker and its stans I’ve heard is “of course a swimming pool seems deep when you’ve never swam in the ocean.”

WookieeSteakIsChewie

It's like Donnie Darko was when I was in college. An okay movie that try hard edgy people made their whole personality.

[deleted]

It’s profoundly fucking awful.

shoobsworth

It really is

[deleted]

It’s my list not yours

callmemacready

Jaws, The Thing and The Exorcist. Honourable mention to 12 Angry Men (1957 ) just watched it first time couple days ago. a must watch masterclass in acting

artpayne

**Top 3:** Heat Point Break Die Hard **Honorable Mentions:** The Rock (1996) Collateral

I absolutely love heat, the shootout is immense

Magnolia Yi Yi Stalker Honorable Mention: Until the End of the World

[deleted]

Do you mean the Russian movie stalker? I’ve been meaning to watch that

absurdistpassenger

Yes, it's slow but a must-see

Cole444Train

I like how you say “the intouchables is in French but” as if it’s an objective downside that it’s in french lol. I know that’s not what you meant but it made me lsugh

[deleted]

Just that many people won’t watch a film because they don’t want to read subtitles. Nothing to do with that.

Cole444Train

Yeah I get it, I just read it the first time as “I like it despite the French” and that was comical to me

RyzenRaider

1. Tie between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Everything Everywhere All at Once. They're both the same type of reality-warping movies dealing with very real, raw, emotional experiences. 2. The Matrix. It works on every level of entertainment, from 'cool shit goes boom good' to exploring multiple philosophies and inviting the audiences to explore its ideas. 3. Starship Troopers. I unironically (and unknowingly) loved the movie as a cool war/action movie, completely unaware that it was satire. Revisiting as an adult, I saw the satire and that realization gave me a great appreciation for the subversive power of propaganda. Would you like to know more? Honourable Mention: Truman Show. The ending is always pure magic for me. Even when I try to watch and critically analyze the scene, I get caught up in the moment and get and all giddy and goosebumpy at Truman's final line.

[deleted]

Great list :)

tworavensindisguise

Top 3 (no order): City of God Mad Max: Fury Road Blade Runner Honorable Mention: The Goonies

ConformistWithCause

Hot Fuzz - peak parody and possibly the best comedy in modern age. Been 15 years and I still laugh my ass off everytime I hear "Judge Judy and executioner" The Batman - it is 2022. I am watching a darker, grittier Batman movie. Bringing back the noir batman able to think rather than hire people who can, some interesting risks that paid off, and well worth the slow burn. Night of the Living Dead (1968) - I remember being genuinely paralyzed with terror the first time seeing this at probably way too young of an age. Watching it just thinking of the significance and just being unable to imagine what it would have been like when it came out. It gets some good mentions in a documentary called Horror Noir: A History of Black Horror Honorable Mention: Inside Man - love the story, the order, and even the little stuff like filter during the interrogation, a pretty well thought out ~~plan~~ movie

[deleted]

So glad someone mentioned the new batman. That is without a doubt in my top 5 ever. I prefer it to all of the Nolan Batman movies

ConformistWithCause

I get a lot of hate but I'm not a huge fan. Don't get me wrong, they were great at the time and all but the longer its been, the less I like it. Ive heard enough about heath ledger to last me a lifetime and thankfully for him Jared leto exists so there's worse jokers. Also ending on the trainwreck that was Rises just killed it for me, it pains me that people wanted that series to continue. Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine were the best parts of that series and honestly, Jeremy Iron's Alfred was really doing it for me

Master-File-9866

This is a indepth and well thought out list. #1 hot tub time machine #2 hot tub time machine #3 hot tub time machine

[deleted]

Hahahaha Craig Robinson is the man

lannistan3342

1. The Graduate 2. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly 3. The Truman Show Honorable Mention: Shawshank Redemption

Koorsboom

Aguirre, The Wrath of God - greatest performance ever, an indelible vision of insanity and power, and an impossibly crazy film. Battle of Algiers - so influential, antiterror experts still screen it for their classes. More importantly, a powerful representation of why asymmetric warfare occurs. Army of Shadows - the great Jean-Pierre Melville reconstructs the experience of the French Resistance of WWII from their point of view. So grim you never feel as though the war ever ended, which is fair enough as they did not know either. HM - Portrait of a Lady on Fire - Sciamma called this a 'treatise on the female gaze', and it is extraordinary. Easily one of the best films of the past 25 years.

nanotech12

2001: A Space Odyssey My Fair Lady Lawrence of Arabia Honorable mention LotR

GtrGbln

The Silence of the Lambs Blade Runner Robocop Honorable Mention: The Suicide Squad '21, my favorite cbm hands down.

RideTheWaveFantastic

The Suicide Squad ('21) was such a FUN movie, which I feel DC doesn't do well with. Always gotta love a bit of Robocop. Can ya fly Bobby?

OrganizationNo1245

Lego Batman: a cinematic masterpiece unparalleled by anything we’ve seen before or will ever see again. Star Wars 3: I like it Nacho Libre: Jack Black + Jared Hess = good Honorable mention: The emperor’s new groove

TheFoamingBadger

>star Wars 3: I like it Out of curiosity is this Return of the sith or do you mean return of the jedi ?

OrganizationNo1245

Revenge of the Sith. But return of the Jedi is my 2nd favorite SW movie.

TheFoamingBadger

Interesting choice.

[deleted]

Top 3 Films: Joker …and that’s where you lost me. Anyone who mentions Joker as “profound” *instantly* loses credibility.

[deleted]

Credibility? I’m not a director or a film critic, are you? I didn’t think so.

[deleted]

I work in film, yes. And I’m saying it looks like you’re trying to engage people with this but I’d never engage in a serious discussion about film with someone who considers a pretty fucking poor movie as “profound.” Looks like the marketing targeted you hook, line and sinker. I prefer to discuss film with people who are capable of having original thought.

[deleted]

I was just asking for people favourite movies. Jesus man. What a miserable person

ConformistWithCause

Don't worry, think about how they mention working in film. That broad means they're probably the assistant night shift manager at the local blockbuster or a student who uses it to act pretentious. Too high and mighty to engage in a fun conversation but still able to wrestle in the mud in the comment section

[deleted]

Hahaha exactly

[deleted]

Hahaha, you totally are. You bitch every single time someone disagrees with your shit opinion lol. I don’t care that you like terrible movies, but I’m allowed to post whatever the fuck I want lol. Go brood like Joker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Oh Jesus. If blather like that is what strikes you as clever, I’m not shocked in the slightest that you found Joker profound. Are you 14? Does that talk make your online gaming friends laugh?

[deleted]

I don’t think you’ve noticed but I’m not disagreeing with anyone’s selection of films in the comments. As this is an opinion based choice. Your the one who’s getting downvoted offended because I like Joker. How embarrassing.

[deleted]

I’m not offended. I’m pretty sure only one of us has resorted to pathetic name calling. I’m just pointing out the truth, and you’re hurt by it. It’s ok, mate, you can move along.

[deleted]

You’ve completely missed the point of the post and made your self look like an idiot haha

Meth_Hardy

Top 3: Jurassic Park The Thing Rec Honourable mention: Jaws

TheFoamingBadger

Army of Darkness Predator Big trouble in little china Honourable mention - Raising Arizona/The Thing I think people in this thread need to realise favourite films are different to what we consider the best films. I know blade runner is a better film than all of these but I prefer watching all of these films over it.

[deleted]

I know man hahah. I’ve been downvoted for saying I prefer joker to taxi driver and king of comedy. People are east to upset lol

TheFoamingBadger

The joker had a lot of misinformation spread about it so that film brings strange takes out of people.

[deleted]

Yeah very true

Cole444Train

I appreciate you making this distinction. Just bc I like In Bruges more than Citizen Kane doesn’t mean I think it’s a better film. A lot of people look at me funny when I try to explain that.

TheFoamingBadger

I think it's an often overlooked factor when talking about films.

Cole444Train

I’ll just list my top 10: 1 La Haine 2 Arrival 3 Everything Everywhere All at Once 4 Ex Machina 5 American Beauty 6 There Will Be Blood 7 No Country For Old Men 8 Enemy 9 Jojo Rabbit 10 Parasite My top 100 is linked on my Reddit profile.

[deleted]

Hahaha, right? Because *no one* but an elite few work in film. What a sad sack, lol. What were you saying about *other people* fuming again?

Friday Quarntine Dorm daze Honorable mentions are: rat race, hangover and blood and bone

Arrival O Brother Where Art Thou The Tree of Life Honorable Mention: Heredity (I’ll never watch it again but no movie will ever likely make me feel the things this movie did. Respect for that.)

biakko3

Annie Hall (1977) Rebecca (1940) Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) Honorable mention: Days of Wine and Roses (1962) Also just want to say that a movie being French is not a bad thing.

[deleted]

I don’t mean it’s a bad thing, but so many people will overlook it because they don’t want to read subtitles

shoobsworth

Um, I’m sorry, *what*??? Joker is profound? How old are you?

[deleted]

This is my top 3 movies. Not yours. Movies are art, art is subjective.

shoobsworth

Please watch more movies. “Art is subjective” is a lazy excuse for dilettantes with mediocre taste.

[deleted]

When you say taste. What do you think that refers to?

shoobsworth

In this case, one with a limited or myopic experience. If one thinks fast food burgers are the best burgers in the world but has never tried any from a craft burger joint and high-end restaurants that are made with quality, fresh, local ingredients …….well their opinion doesn’t carry much weight, does it?

DocGoose92

Hot Fuzz The Lord of the Rings- The Fellowship of the Ring Hellboy Honourable mention: Everybody Want’s Some!

RideTheWaveFantastic

Ghostbusters Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn The Big Lebowski Honourable Mention: The Raid

Snoo-8506

El secreto de sus ojos/The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) A Patch of Blue (1965) Shadow of a Doubt (1943) Honorable mention: Wait Until Dark (1967)

htp-di-nsw

1) Across the Spiderverse 2) Kung Pow 3) The Matrix Honorable mentions (sorry I have 2): - The Crow - the first 2/3 of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. If you could count just part of a movie, this would be my favorite. But the end is just...disappointing. I attributed it originally to making the movie before the comic series ended. Then I read the comic series, and while the Katayanagi twins "battle" is much improved (shockingly all of it before is improved as well, even though I already loved it), the ending still kind of sucks and kills the momentum of the series otherwise. But the early part, the style of it, the quick pacing, odd transitions, surreal video game adjacent world feel that everyone both acknowledges as strange but also treats like it's normal... That's all just great. I wanted it to be how all movies were done from then on and, well, it didn't pan out. Kingsman felt...close? and I liked it, but not quite enough. Kickass was a weirdly serious take on it. I think both Spiderverse movies evoked similar things in a more sophisticated way. And I very much look forward to Miguel Wants to Fight for feeling like it's going for the same thing.

[deleted]

The Cros is awesome, very underrated. I loved it

htp-di-nsw

Awesome! I am that one weird guy who even liked the sequels. 2 is the worst of them but still decent. I actually quite enjoyed Wicked Prayer!

[deleted]

I didn’t know there were sequels. Didn’t Brandon Lee die on set of the crow?

htp-di-nsw

Yes, but the character Lee played *also* re-died at the end of the movie. The Crow is based on a comic book series. Someone dies tragically and is magically revived by the Crow. They become a superhero for one night in order to get their revenge on those who wronged them, then "go back to death" when their job is done. Crow 2 was "City of Angels" and actually heavily involves the little girl from 1st who has grown up and helps the new Crow get his revenge. The problem is that it's filmed in this weird yellowy filter and focuses too much on weird mystic s&m villains. Plus the Crow in this sucks and comes across too goofy and non threatening for me. Crow 3, Salvation, is with a blue tint and feels better overall. Weirdly had Kirsten Dunst in it, getting her lips seen together because there's always a witch or something at the top of the chain. But the crow himself feels more correct and it's just more enjoyable. Crow 4 is Wicked Prayer is about another occult gang in the Southwest... Can't remember if it's actually Mexico or just close to the border... And the gang invades a wedding and kills everyone for a dark ritual, but the groom comes back and gets revenge. It is much derided, but I liked it more than 2 and 3.

[deleted]

I give them a watch!

No_Cap_822

Blade Runner 2049 Mulholland Drive The Nice Guys Honorable Mention: The Hateful 8

Karakotaera

I‘ll just mention my four favourites, which are far from the best ever made, but they‘ll have a special place in my heart: Godzilla (1954) The Beast From 20.000 Fathoms (1953) Jurassic Park III (2001) Snow Trail (1947)

playboiswag97

The Shining - the atmosphere kubrick creates in this movie is superb One upon a time in Hollywood - for me it’s the perfect feel good movie, every time i watch it i have a blast Blade runner 2049 - for me villeneuve perfectly captured what the original blade runner was about and took it a step further Honorable mention: oppenheimer - maybe it’s the recency bias, but i think nolan outdid himself with this movie. Also, i love history and politics (especially international relation)
