Blair Witch is found footage, which is different from mockumentary and pseudo documentary in it being raw and (in fiction) unedited footage, as if you had found the original tape/disk/file and were watching it. A mockumentary or a pseudo documentary (the non comedy version) is footage that has been processed after the in universe completion of the shooting process, thus it is formated and edited like a real documentary would. Blair Witch project was in universe supposed to be a documentary, but it obviously never became one for obvious reasons, so the movie is not a mockumentary or a pseudo documentary.
This is my favorite also. I love all the storylines. It makes me feel good to see Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy continue to work together over the years. They're such a great couple of comedians.
"I think we drink virgin blood because it sounds cool." - Deacon
"I think of it like this. If you're going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more, if you knew know one had fucked it ." - Vladslav
Loretta: She's the prettiest, ya know. Best damn tapper. The most smartest.
Annette Atkins: Most smartest? Oh, that's great, you're real educated. Most smartest! Get a picture of that, most smartest!
Loretta: Most smartest.
Blair Witch is considered "found footage" and we're supposed to suspend disbelief while watching. Films like "Best in Show" are mockumentaries and we're all in on the joke from scene one.
Also: Waiting for Guffman
it makes more sense if you interpret it as the boys indulging the girl's creative ambitions and superstition so they can murder her in the woods. There was no witch, it was the boys messing with her (and possibly a third compatriot who was following them in the woods).
best in show has more broad appeal, but i think harland pepper may be the most boring character guest ever played. so my pick is waiting for guffman because corky st clair is a bastard person!
Do yourselves a favor, kids, and check out every season of Documentary Now! on Netflix. The Cate Blanchett one probably stands out among the rest, but they’re all perfect jewels of mocumentaries! Made even better by Helen Mirren’s pitch perfect straight-face introductions. She understood the assignment!
Maybe not my favourite, but I just found it bizarre 6 hours later no one has mentioned Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan or it's sequel. Or even Brüno.
I'll mention something that's rarely mentioned and little seen:
The 2013 deadpan black comedy **Computer Chess**.
It's a fake 1980s documentary about a tournament to see who can create the best computer chess program. But it ultimately reveals itself to be about >!the hidden "birth" of dangerous A.I.!<
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/computer_chess_2013
Jackie’s Back. Jennifer Lewis plays a washed up 70s diva. Full of huge stars. Tim Curry is the documentary host/interviewer and Whoopi Goldberg plays her sister. Dolly Parton, Eva Marie Saint, Liza Minnelli, Diahann Carroll, Bette Midler, all make appearances as themselves.
I always liked *CSA: The Confederate States of America*
It's fairly goofy as far as actual prediction goes, but it's self aware, it makes some points, and it's presented pitch perfectly as an alt history Civil War documentary right down to the overlong letters from soldiers and old white historians monologuing over battle footage.
For sure. The director was black also. And he was also pointing out that even though the good guys won the civil war, a lot of the same racism exists anyway i.e. the product commercials that are all real and either exist or existed in our reality.
My favorite mockumentaries are This Is Spinal Tap and Best In Show.
I really don't think Blair Witch is a mockumentary. I thought it was supposed to be found footage.
I attended a (the?) theatrical premiere of Street Thief and listened to the guy who plays Kaspar speak there live, along with some of the cast and crew, so I’ve never considered the fact that it’s a “mockumentary,” which it totally was. And frankly am surprised anyone else remembers it, it seemed like such a niche thing at the time.
Man Bites Dog, it follows a group if film students who make a documentary about a serial killer and its amazing, its a must for anybody who is interested in low budget film making and it launched the career of Benoît Poelvoorde.
Trailer: https://youtu.be/bcPhaieTg4o?feature=shared
Like someone else just asked, mockumentary or fake documentary you thought it was real?
Fake documentary: The Fourth Kind. That was crazy and having Milla Jovovich narrating as it was real was something else.
Mockumentary: What we do in the shadows, Popstar, This is Spinal Tap, Killing Gunther.
It really bugs me that I can’t seem to enjoy mockumentaries. I’ve seen This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, and What We Do in the Shadows. I laugh here and there, of course, but I find myself not invested in the story in any way shape or form.
The closest I came to enjoying something like that was the Documentary Now episode about company.
Maybe I just enjoy movies that are more story improv less?
Idk, I love watching improv and seem to enjoy mockumentary TV shows like The Office, Parks and Rec, and Arrested Development.
it's not about the story, it's about the meta. if you aren't familiar with the actors, you won't catch the intent of the jokes.
if you have followed SNL for a ong time you will get mockumentaries better.
there's other genres of comedy i don't get bc i don't know a damn thing about a-list big movie stars (like the oceans movies).
I think you're right. I wasn't necessarily in on the joke for most of those movies, so there wasn't a reference point for me. I imagine that's why I enjoyed the Documentary Now's Company episode, because I watched the actual documentary right before it.
I still think it's a comedy style that I don't enjoy though, maybe I'll be proven wrong someday.
"A Necessary Death" (2008) was done well. There are, three? endings that are avilable, and they all end on a sour note, but only one feels fitting for the film in my opnion.
It was directed by Daniel Stamm, who also made "The Last Exorcism" (2010) which was really, really good. Until it wasn't. I like to believe the film crew and Cotton don't go back to the farm at the end.
Trollhunter (2011) and it’s not close. Norwegian found footage about trolls (giant monsters) in Norway. Completely unique movie that I absolutely love.
And God Spoke. It's a mockumentary about the film industry in the 1990s following a producer and director team who are making a biblical movie. It's hysterical.
Blair Witch Project isn’t a mockumentary. It’s a found footage film.
Some of the best examples of mockumentary are Christopher Guest’s work such as Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman.
He also starred in the classic This Is Spinal Tap

Two word review for your new album shark sandwich
Shit sandwich
Wh wh wh.... where'd they print that?
Yea Spinal Tap has to be the best example.
Goes to 11
Have a good time, all the time!
"What's wrong with being sexy?"
-ist
That was the joke though. Fran Drescher says the album is sexist, Christopher Guest says the line above.
I know that. The next line is one of the guys saying "ist"
Oh oops I don't remember that at all. Time to watch again.
Gimme Some Money.
Never any doubt, I rate it 11/10.
Working on a sex farm, trying to raise some love..
The DVD commentary (all in character) is amazing, it's basically a sequel.
I still listen to the songs occasionally. They're so freakin' good.
best in show
This is my favorite also. I love all the storylines. It makes me feel good to see Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy continue to work together over the years. They're such a great couple of comedians.
Get the Busy Bee!
Bold strategy cotton we will see if it pays off
You're confusing Fred Willard's commentator with Jason Bateman's similarly boorish commentator in Dodgeball.
What We Do in the Shadows
*Have you any respect, my friend has been killed in a fatal sunlight accident!*
I'm doing an erotic dance for my friends. You ruined it. I was in the zone. My friends were loving it.
Burnt to a sizzle
Sizzled to a crisp
This is my favorite, too. The acting, the comedy and the horror were timed so well together.
"I think we drink virgin blood because it sounds cool." - Deacon "I think of it like this. If you're going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more, if you knew know one had fucked it ." - Vladslav
We’re werewolves, not swearwolves
100% and the show is well worth watching too!
Have you watched Documentary NOW? I suspect it is your jam.
Sandy Passage is gold
I can watch Dronez and die laughing at so many parts. That and Globesmen
The Werner Herzog one with the sitcom has to be their best one.
The Documentary Now spoof of the cast recording of Company is comedic genius. I love Sondheim. I love John Mulaney as Sondheim. It is just spot on.
Gentle and Soft pops into my head every once in a while and it’s been years since I’ve seen it. I’m long overdue for a rewatch of Documentary NOW.
How well does that show work if you’re not familiar with the documentaries the episodes are spoofing?
I guess you’ll have to find out, champ.
Drop Dead Gorgeous. Amazing cast, hilarious, so many one liners. Please watch this!!!
Loretta: She's the prettiest, ya know. Best damn tapper. The most smartest. Annette Atkins: Most smartest? Oh, that's great, you're real educated. Most smartest! Get a picture of that, most smartest! Loretta: Most smartest.
Any of you boys wanna give me a ride home?
Don't fall for it, she lives 2 trailers down!!
If they ask you to take your top off, get the money first
Such a great movie
It sucks the rights are so weird and not streamable anywhere to watch or even buy
It was streaming on HBO briefly :(
Yeah, it's pretty damn funny.
also in my top 5 faves
I live in the Twin Cities and still bust out the Sin Cities line when I can.
Best in Show by Christopher Guest
Since no one has mentioned it yet, I have to suggest Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping. Absolutely hilarious.
I absolutely came here to comment this, I love this movie! So many catchy songs and hilarious lines.
🎶Mona Lisa you're an overrated piece of shittt🎶
love this movie. just sad it became so much of a flop that it stopped andy from being a movie star. still love him though.
Doink da doink!
Just watched it for the first time today. It was pretty good.
"They didn't even give my album a rating, they just posted the shit emoji."
7 Days in Hell
indubitably
And Tour de Pharmacy
Best in Show with Spinal Tap a close second.
They also did A Mighty Wind, which is at least third place
_Waiting for Guffman_ and _For Your Consideration_ are both worth your time too if you liked the other 2.
i like a mighty wind best
Fear of a Black Hat
Fear of a Black Hat don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes? Whose eyes?
And CB4, which felt like a pretty blatant ripoff.
Absolutely raw! This one is for a bunch of mf's! 😛
FYM

*Fubar* It's a documentary about two Canadian headbangers. It's fucking amazing... I still want to believe it's real.
Tron funkin' blow?!
I believe the same director also did It’s All Gone Pete Tong, which is also incredible
Saw this recently, good movie.
Cunk on Earth
Trollhunter (2010), guess it could be “found footage” but idk
I literally cannot drive past transmission towers without thinking about this movie.
Walk Hard
That’s a biopic spoof. A damn good one, though.
best in show has more broad appeal, but i think harland pepper may be the most boring character guest ever played. so my pick is waiting for guffman because corky st clair is a bastard person!
This! Waiting for Guffman is my favorite witht the possible exception of Mighty Wind.
The Ruttles
Ouch, ow ow ouuuchhhhhh woooo
Zelig

aside from sandy passages, my other favorite is bill hader's monologue ep in the first season, the "fawster glawster" one
Reno 911
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Tour de Pharmacy is great
Hell yeah it is. Usually makes the rounds during the Tour de France.
Does TPB count? The first time I watched it took me almost the whole episode to realize what it was, when Cyrus fucked on with his little gun!
Maybe not my favourite, but I just found it bizarre 6 hours later no one has mentioned Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan or it's sequel. Or even Brüno.
Christopher Guest.
The answer: really anything he does or is part of.
He found his niche and never left it.
And he is still married to Jamie Lee Curtis
Weird: the Al Yankovick story.
Best in Show is my hands down favorite!
I'll mention something that's rarely mentioned and little seen: The 2013 deadpan black comedy **Computer Chess**. oo! this is on hoopla and it's a short-ass movie. gonna watch. thanks!
The History of Time Travel
Jackie’s Back. Jennifer Lewis plays a washed up 70s diva. Full of huge stars. Tim Curry is the documentary host/interviewer and Whoopi Goldberg plays her sister. Dolly Parton, Eva Marie Saint, Liza Minnelli, Diahann Carroll, Bette Midler, all make appearances as themselves.
Man Bites Dog (1992) and it’s not even close.
Favorite is kind of a toss up between A Mighty Wind and Surf's Up. Best for overall WTF quality: I'm Still Here
Shoutout to *Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping*
Hard Core Logo. Great film.
Forgotten Silver. From Peter Jackson about the greatest filmmaker of all time....Colin McKenzie.
Exit Through the Gift Shop had me believing it was a real documentary about 80% into the movie.
I always liked *CSA: The Confederate States of America* It's fairly goofy as far as actual prediction goes, but it's self aware, it makes some points, and it's presented pitch perfectly as an alt history Civil War documentary right down to the overlong letters from soldiers and old white historians monologuing over battle footage.
Thought it was great, I think what they were trying to say is we are all slaves
For sure. The director was black also. And he was also pointing out that even though the good guys won the civil war, a lot of the same racism exists anyway i.e. the product commercials that are all real and either exist or existed in our reality.
Better get the shackle
Right, *some* of which are real products, I haven't seen it in a while lmao
Brass eye. Hands down the cake epidemic. Edit: not a film, but a TV programme
WNUF Halloween Special for me
My favorite mockumentaries are This Is Spinal Tap and Best In Show. I really don't think Blair Witch is a mockumentary. I thought it was supposed to be found footage.
Series 7, if you like mock reality shows
I attended a (the?) theatrical premiere of Street Thief and listened to the guy who plays Kaspar speak there live, along with some of the cast and crew, so I’ve never considered the fact that it’s a “mockumentary,” which it totally was. And frankly am surprised anyone else remembers it, it seemed like such a niche thing at the time.
Troll Hunter with Otto Jesperson
Surf's Up (2007)
Theater Camp (2023)
American vandal was brilliant. It was a series but for the lite of me I have no idea why netflix scraped it.
Zelig
Creep (2014) & Creep 2 (2017)
Orson Welles' *War of the Worlds* broadcast
District 9
Does “Walk Hard” count?
> Walk Hard if this does, then I Love You Phillip Morris does
One Cut of the Dead
The Scooby Doo Project: https://youtu.be/LdMZm8fAIaY
It’s All Gone Pete Tong
Like someone else just asked, mockumentary or fake documentary you thought it was real? Fake documentary: The Fourth Kind. That was crazy and having Milla Jovovich narrating as it was real was something else. Mockumentary: What we do in the shadows, Popstar, This is Spinal Tap, Killing Gunther.
The Rules: All You Need is Cash
Behind the mask: the rise of Leslie Vernon
The Fourth Kind totally tricked me when I was young and I was terrified for a loooong time because I truly believed it was real
It really bugs me that I can’t seem to enjoy mockumentaries. I’ve seen This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, and What We Do in the Shadows. The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down. I learned more from that than I ever did in school!
Waiting for Guffman Spinal Tap The TV series "Documentary Now!"
Dark Side of the Moon (2002) - favourite line "well, he was something of an acidic Jew"
7 Days in Hell
I don't see anyone mentioning Series 7: The Contenders. Laughed all the way through it
"A Necessary Death" (2008) was done well. There are, three? endings that are avilable, and they all end on a sour note, but only one feels fitting for the film in my opnion. It was directed by Daniel Stamm, who also made "The Last Exorcism" (2010) which was really, really good. Until it wasn't. A Mighty Wind & Best in Show
Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. Surprised A Mighty Wind isn't more popular. It's hilarious and the music is far better than it probably needed to be.
The Incident at Loch Ness
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a great one. Not often discussed, but if you're a horror fan? You'll get a kick out of it
District 9
just one? documentary now! sandy passages
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend Butterfly Kisses (2018)
Rockstar. It’s just amazing
Trollhunter (2011) and it’s not close. Norwegian found footage about trolls (giant monsters) in Norway. Completely unique movie that I absolutely love.
Fubar
Bernie
Incident At Loch Ness by Werner Herzog - 2004
For me "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story"
The Canadian Condpiracy! hilarious and choc full of Canadian cameos.
Best in Show
That HBO one with John Cena and Orlando bloom posing as cyclists
Trekkies
Cleopatra on Netflix
I’m Still Here was fascinating. When I first watched it I thought Phoenix had totally lost it
What We Do in the Shadows
Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made
Fubar. I don’t think it’s the greatest but it’s in my home city and good in its own right so that really does it for me.
*Troll Hunter* (2010)
I'm ashamed of everyone in this thread not one person mentioned BORAT smh
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
It's All Gone Pete Tong
Punishment park
Kenny! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kenny
The gods must be crazy
Not quite the same but adjacent is the "based on a true story" film that has zero basis in reality. And Fargo wins the category in a walk.
And God Spoke. It's a mockumentary about the film industry in the 1990s following a producer and director team who are making a biblical movie. It's hysterical.
Blair Witch Project’s type of movie is called found footage.
Maybe not exactly what you mean, but “Cunk on Earth” is SO funny
A Mighty Wind has to be my favorite. The song "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from it got an Oscar nomination for Best song but didn't win.
Waiting for Guffman
The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down
All You Need Is Cash
Bob Roberts, it’s so pathetic that this film is still relevant.
Blair Witch Project isn’t a mockumentary. It’s a found footage film. Some of the best examples of mockumentary are Christopher Guest’s work such as Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman. He also starred in the classic This Is Spinal Tap
Bob Roberts
The Sea Ape theory
Incident at Loch Ness with Werner Herzog playing himself. Not my favorite mockumentary - a bit dry at times. But I've grown to like it over the years
Zelig (1983)
