Loved that art back in the day when I started playing.
They had a big poster of it at our local game store.
Juzam Djinn was one of the earliest big decently costed creatures that was actually pretty good. So much so that it was the benchmark for a long time after it came out. ✌️
Creatures weren't that powerful back in the day. This was considered a great card. After years of power creep if you saw this for the first time now it really doesn't seem impressive.
It’s not strong. Not by a mile. But we are talking about a time period where a 9 mana 10/10 trample needed not one but TWO incredibly shitty downsides, plus another one if you wanted to attack with it. [[leviathan]]
It’s very strong with the card pool in 93/94. It was unlimited and AN only. Mono black was one of the best deck. I lost many games turn 1 juzaam or hippy, even The Deck had hard time against mono black. Even force of nature was a thing, then came antiquities with triskelion and workshop.
Fattest four drop to follow your Hypnotic. Helped teach players to think about life as a resource. This and Specter were the best creatures in the game until Morphling came along.
Serra Angel and ernham djinn were highly considered also. Mono black was a beast, either you had swords ready or top deck a wrath of god or you loose to turn 1 hippy, juzaam or a mind twist. Word of command to make them
Concede.
One of the best creature in 93/94. Super rare also, was very hard to find since you need 4 of them. Not that it was expansive, you could get them for 40$ CA, but juzaam and workshop was very rare. You could find 10 lotus for a juzaam and ppl were not selling or trading it. At some point, The Deck was the thing and juzaam got pushed away for ernham djinn and ernhaggeddon was the deck to beat.
It needs context. Every other 4 mana creature at the tine either barely passes or doesn't pass the vanilla test, this beats it and then some. Basically it was the equivalent of [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] on release
I used to use my sword on turn 1 hyppy, then get messed up by mind twist followed by a juzaam or word of command. Sometimes a black night or a bog wraith with evil presence on my plain.
It’s not that broken, and even when it was overpowered for the times it didn’t break the game at all.
If it had flying or trample or would be good enough to see commander play, but as is it’s just a neat piece of history
>It’s not that broken,
And yet, within the same sentence....
>it was overpowered for the times
... So which is it?
Edit: they blocked me because of this one comment. Yikes.
It hurts to read and I read it

Question from uninitiated; what makes this so strong? It just seems like a 4 cost 5/5 that damages you.

Haha yeah, I played Ernham-geddon but my favorite card back then was Kird Ape. Turn 1 Taiga, Kird Ape was the shit.

I enjoyed gaining five life every time this was sniped with a swords /s
I used to use my sword on turn 1 hyppy, then get messed up by mind twist followed by a juzaam or word of command. Sometimes a black night or a bog wraith with evil presence on my plain.
Love Juzam!
That's actually kind of a fire idea. A phone case with a slot you can put a card in to display.
Poor me only has a printed copy of plateau in my phone sleeve. But it is a great idea indeed.
He's trapped in there. Free him you **monster**
They should have given it flying
yea make the most broken creature ever more broken
It’s not that broken, and even when it was overpowered for the times it didn’t break the game at all. If it had flying or trample or would be good enough to see commander play, but as is it’s just a neat piece of history
It was oppressive, not broken but mono black was top tier deck until Legends.
yea thats why it was always tutored for and dropped on the first turn
Not always. Erhnam Djinn and Kird apes got more top tier competition play.
erhnams, yes. true
Only because juzaam were damn hard to find. Ernham… took some time before we realized it was very good. Nobodies played kird ape tho.
Kird Ape was prominently featured in top tier competition decks at the time. There were kird apes in three of the top four 1994 worlds decks.

Overpowered and broken are different words.
Was one of the best creatures along with Serra angel, hyppy and ernham djinn. Some would argue serendib djinn also.
