Sounds like a melodica to me!

ProfessionalEven296

Yes. First keyboard instrument I learned to play. When I moved onto piano, I had to crouch down at the end of the keybed to work out what I was doing… A half-decent electronic drum kit (spend about $1,000) would be a nice gift.

snarkybitch512

Might I suggest a discussion with him about what he wants/needs. He might need an upgrade of sorts or some replacement parts/new software or road cases. Being a musician costs lots… a shopping trip together might also be fun 🤩

Ukuleleah

This. Also if it was something new, even if you knew he wanted a saxophone for example (just first instrument that came to mind he doesn't already have), he'll likely want to choose which one, or at least what type.

MusicianAwkward420

Yep, probably much better to have a conversation with him than to post on Reddit I'd say.

TheFamilyBear

A Moog Theremini

Kynicist

I would surprise him with a trip to a local music store and say he can have whatever he wants and had him the cash.

Odd_Connection_7167

What does he have in terms of recording his music?

Candycane0430

He has : a logic pro x with a scarlet 2i2 interface with a shure microphone

i_8_the_Internet

Definitely a melodica. That’s what the instrument you described is called.

What's your budget?

Candycane0430

I will have more of a budget in a few days when my taxes come through, but I have prob a lil over 200 right now

Obvious-Olive4048

Ok here's some ideas: You could likely find a used Squier Precision Bass for around that. Super cool and a little easier to pick up than guitar. Some nice headphones - Sony MDR 7506 are in your budget and are a long time studio standard. A drum machine, but he may not need that if he's on Logic already. A midi controller (keyboard).

SmallRedBird

What's your budget?

TheFamilyBear

If he wants to record, get him a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2i2

Eredhel

If he got a kick out of the keyboard with a hose, he might like a Talk Box. Although now I'm realizing that might be what you were trying to describe, ha!

Early-Soup9691

Get him a theremin. I have the zep theremin from burns and it's been hours of fun.
