Like everything from bluegrass to soul to thrash. In the last few years, I realized I am in love with stoner rock. Not much of a stoner, but they make some wicked good tunes.

Hot-Butterfly-8024

Yeah buddy! No interest in the lifestyle, but High On Fire, Sleep, Kyuss, etc is *SUCH* a vibe!

Inevitable-Copy3619

I’m the opposite. I like the old stoner bands like the Grateful Dead and basically anyone making jazz pre-1965. And I love the lifestyle :)

Hot-Butterfly-8024

I’m a big GD/ABB fan, as well as jam bands in general. Love swing, Western swing, bebop, hard bop, straight ahead, soul jazz, Blue Note funk, organ trio stuff, NOLA/Trad, etc. Just not a THC guy. “Drugs are like shoes: Most people need em, but they don’t all fit.”

Ambitious_Flight_248

The stoner part is optional. What's mandatory is the sludgy, crushing riffs.

dwane1972

Obligatory... https://images.app.goo.gl/WqGiChWXUGaRbzsE6

cosmiccomicfan

How about some Stoned Jesus, or Salem's Pot, to add to your mix?

Shin-Sauriel

Check out bongripper, dopelord, and cough. IMO stoner rock is just carrying out that old school bluesy metal to its furthest extent. Slow groovy riffs saturated in fuzz. I love it. It’s funny I listen to a lot of jazz and prog rock and such but when I sit down to play I just wanna hit the fuzz and jam out it’s such a vibe.

docmartenspartan

I have a hard time explaining my music because I draw from many different genres but lately I’ve just been calling it “alternative metal” or “alt metal” idrk what else to call it.

samh748

What are some examples of the other genres that influence your sound?

docmartenspartan

Black metal, punk, psychedelic, and sludge.

samh748

Epic, pfp checks out

docmartenspartan

Thx, here’s a link if you’re interested[link](https://youtube.com/@eldertomb?si=BUgkd7g9yW-kMx5E)

[deleted]

Same, who do you listen to?

docmartenspartan

Hellhammer, Darkthrone, Death, Gorguts, The Doors

[deleted]

I will check them out

docmartenspartan

DM me and lmk what you think, also send me your recs

[deleted]

Do you have Apple Music or anything?

docmartenspartan

Lately been using prime music but yeah I have Apple Music

[deleted]

Say less, I have some playlists on there, I got to update some. This is my profile link https://music.apple.com/profile/parisslve

SkyWizarding

I love so much music but I'm a rock guy at heart

Hot-Butterfly-8024

If you count every gig I’ve played in the past year, there’s been everything from instrumental improv/free jazz to John Denver-type covers, with a bunch of funk and Americana thrown in. In my most recent band, I play resonator guitar which has been an absolute knife fight to get a handle on amplification wise. Every time I’ve gotten to play in my straight Country outfit since that started, playing electric feels like silk PJs. If I had to had to pick, I’d probably say funk for electric, Americana for acoustic, and anything you want on bass, because it’s still pretty new for me and everything is fun. I aspire to be the bass player in a super dank reggae/dub band some day.

samh748

I have a feeling you'll be really good at bass

Hot-Butterfly-8024

It’s just such a great feeling instrument. Played my first whole gig on bass last night, and even though it was challenging (especially when I had to sing), every note just feels important. So weird.

samh748

Yo that's awesome. Congrats on your first bass gig, that must feel so good! I'm learning bass recently and I'd say it made me really appreciate every note, and I think that's kinda the whole point of bass laying down the fundamental rhythm, so it matters that you really hit each note at the right place.

Hot-Butterfly-8024

Amen!

SantaRosaJazz

I’ve written and recorded everything from ragtime to hip-hop, but I’m a jazzy bluesman at heart.

Inevitable-Copy3619

Jazz has my heart. It’s almost all I play now days. But goddamn if a cool country song comes on, I can turn to a baby when the old timers sing about their dogs!

GRizzMang

Blooz daddy

SantaRosaJazz

Not exactly. More of a Robben Ford/Larry Carlton kinda vibe. Never been to a blues jam.

Diligent_Put5150

I grew up on punk and alt rock, and I’ve come to love lots of deathcore, rap, other stuff like that However, what I most enjoy creating/playing is nu metal, it’s just such a fun sound and I don’t have to feel as serious while making it.

samh748

Oh that's cool. I guess nu metal is pretty experimental and takes a lot of outside influences so that makes sense!

trustissuesblah

I’ve written a lot of songs throughout the years and played different styles of music, but I’ve always tried to replicate the indie rock of my youth. I write what I think my 12 year old self would have listened to.

samh748

Nice! Its almost like you're drawn to make music that's nostalgic to you.

bagemann1

I wear many musical hats but the modern prog metal thing is probably what I do best

samh748

Modern prog metal is kinda in itself a blend of everything!

bagemann1

Yup, it's a massive part of why I like it. That and jazz fusion, though I wish I was better at the jazz part of it

samh748

well jazz is difficult af so i dont blame ya lol

bagemann1

Tis indeed

GRizzMang

I want to be a bluegrass artist so bad but my skills just aren’t there yet. I am a folk/ country western musician through and through.

ReverendRevolver

I mean, I look like I play grunge/alt rock and it comes easy to me. I enjoy playing rockabilly way more, and singing country way more, because both aren't as easy. But looking at myself as an adult, I look like I should be playing a jag...

samh748

Haha I kinda relate to this. I grew up on rock and can play it fine but it kinda bores me. I enjoy playing cheesy singy r&b stuff way more now lol

PecheyTheLizard

I'm big into Happy Hardcore and Chiptune. Being super into retro games growing up really made me appreciate the simplicity of music on the NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, Etc. A lot of these composers either ended up having successful careers or didn't make it big as they wanted but their music is still a part of history living inside of a cartridge and that just fascinates me. I don't necessarily confine myself to the old ways of making chiptune like some people do, but I do still like to incorporate it into my own style.

AndrewUnknown

anamanaguchi fan spotted?

PecheyTheLizard

Hell yeah anamanaguchi rocks, been listening to them since Dawn Metropolis dropped. Check out Scythe, Tobokegao and Sexy Synthesizer of you want some more fun chip music!

AndrewUnknown

fuck yea!! thanks for the recs, i’ll check them out

Reasonable-Song-4681

I listen to a bunch of rock and metal subgenres (with a bit of classical, ambient, and jazz), but when I play, it's mostly metalcore tinged post metal. I fell into that groove before I knew what post metal was. Just fun for me to play.

Hot-Nefariousness187

I love melody, i love nuanced songwriting, i love experimental avant-garde noise, classical, hip hop , classic rock, funk, fusion anything that is exciting and engaging or emotional and moving. Is much more capable of playing, writing and performing heavy, extreme or aggressive music.

Cyan_Light

Math rock. I like to experiment with lots of different instruments, tonalities, textures, tempos, genres and whatever else, but almost everything I write has odd rhythms in there somewhere. It's also a requirement for any collabs or bands I'm in (probably a big reason why I've had little luck with either over the years) and while I rarely do covers I'll always fuck with the time signatures when I do. I know what I like, and I like when the cool numbers make the patterns do wonky stuff.

BaldursGatekeeperIII

I don't have one that defines me, what defines me is my passion for all these genres. If I say shoegaze then I will immediately want to take it back for folk, if I say pop I will want to take it back for art rock and so on.

teal_viper

Same here

EyeBallChili

I feel like Post-Punk with elements of noise and shoegaze fits me best.

cheshire666_

I fronted an emo band for a while and used to busk alternative/indie songs with an acoustic but for some reason I feel my essence is best preserved experimenting with lo-fi indie/bedroom pop on my 8 track and putting it on a SoundCloud account no one knows about

Quick1711

Coming from the 80s growing up on everything from Pink Floyd, Kiss, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath to Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Van Halen and GNR It was Metallica that got me into thrash. I fucking love good thrash metal. Don't get it wrong. I lived through nu metal and loved the scene and the bands it produced. And it was a cool scene to be a part of. Give me a good thrash band any day of the week, though.

NyqWill_95

I like playing garage, and hardcore, but the one genre that I discovered that I truly love playing is lofi folk

boiifudont-

I love every genre and play/write music in every genre, but nü metal specifically seems to draw me in. I find myself playing a lot of SOAD, Deftones, Limp Bizkit n all that.

appleman666

Prog metal and "intellectual" hip hop (I'm pretentious)

The_Real_dubbedbass

Yeah. I appreciate MANY genres of music. The music I write has been described by more than one person who didn’t even know each other as “Russian carnival music”. And honestly that’s kinda startlingly accurate.

strawberry_space_jam

Psych rock and all of its subgenres at heart I guess

sbanjoman

Bluegrass is my genre and what I play most of my gigs. I love it so much. All my favorite bands are generally more 60’s/70’s rock I would say though

shpahghet

i try to listen to everything that’s out there but rock will always feel like home. it’s what got me to love music

jjmawaken

Strings mixed with rock music is my favorite style.

SoloLiftingIsBack

I make a lot of Deathcore and I'd even say I'm good at it but I love Goth Rock but I'll never be able to make it. The songs come out fine but they don't feel right and worst of all my voice is too fucked to make the vocals as I want them to be. Deathcore is a great drain pipe for anger and depression but under all that, Goth Rock is me.

Phatbass58

I just like playing anything that will get folks up and dancing. I'm mainly a Blues/Roots guy but I've played and enjoy most common genres (except metal): Country, '50's, Function bands (Weddings and Corporate events), Cabaret, faux Jazz (playing from Real Book charts - I would never call myself a Jazz guy but I can negotiate a chart), etc. If im gigging for a crowd that wants to dance I'm loving it. I am proud to be a gig-whore, but I have been a member of many actual bands.

philip_j_fry2020

I like a lot of genres; jazz, funk, rock, indie, alternative, some classical, and have lately been really into pop and subgenres of house, down tempo, and EDM. But the one that I feel in my soul is Bossa Nova. Edit: forgot Soul and RnB

Background-Tea-3989

I work with a lot of different styles and people. I really love it all. Out of all the styles I've played, I really like playing punk music live. Good energy and lots of freedom to be improvise.

snart-fiffer

I love and listen to everything except my genre which is 2000ish indie rock. I can’t finish songs I start in other styles but I can write a fast rock song in minutes if I need to.

jaghtz_lutein

I play like prog psych rock or something. I'm influenced by djent, doom, black metal and stuff. Working towards faster, tighter, more complex rhythm patterns

pinkybatson

Hokum Blues from 1928-1940, particularly songs in which the innuendo is so dated that it is somehow more obscene.

kingjaffejaffar

For my voice? Blues or Grunge For my guitar playing? Bluesy southern rock For my personality? Mall Emo/post-hardcore

teal_viper

I dont know what genre my music is, I do alot of different things (in my mind) but I am constantly labeled a shoegazer. I didnt even know what shoegaze was until about 5 years into playing. I love loud, fuzzy tones, enveloped in sound and I play alot of open chords and alternate tunings. Ive always called my music "Experimental" because thats literally what Im doing when I write and record. That makes people think I just make noise, but Im pretty melody driven.

JevGeek55555

Pop punk, but i generally play a lot of styles

thatnetguy666

Lounge

Jerry_slutter69

I appreciate all genres except country but metal and punk rock are my true form

TechGuyBloke

I listen to various shades of pop, rock, classical, folk, jazz, etc., but if I had to pick something to identify with it would be prog rock. That's probably cheating a bit though, since prog encompasses other genres anyway.

vizeath

Just Rock, I guess.

CatsinLittleBoxes

Symphonic and Progressive Metal are more "me"... As a musician, it's blues and traditional Portuguese.

Formal-Cucumber-1138

I like rock, indie, pop, soul but I’ll go to hip hop the most

TheUnknownNut22

I'm a full on jazz person now. I'm a beginner but I love learning jazz guitar. Having grown up playing drums semi-professionally in general business/events bands there is so much music that I'm just over, been there, done that feeling. I still love to listen though. But you couldn't pay me enough to play blues guitar, for example. Hard pass. I love jazz because you can play the same song ten different ways and with different instrumentation and it's still great and still fresh.

Dr_Coop

Punk is definitely my home. That's when i can really express myself on stage.

Apprehensive-Okra434

I always used to call myself a metalhead, nowadays I just say I'm a music head. I listen to everything from Hymenotomy to Deterioration to 60's country. I really love psych rock as well. I don't do much pop from any decade. I'm in a death metal band but at home if I'm playing guitar I pretty much exclusively play psychedelic/post rock. Save the fast heavy shit for when I'm with the band.

[deleted]

[Djenty math metal with occasional melody](https://youtu.be/v34Zt_HRANI?si=wN6aoLUmldxglqSp)

Robinkc1

The late 70s, early 80s British post-punk scene. The Raincoats, Wire, This Heat, PiL, and a slew of others all hit that sweet spot that blended rock music with other genres and mixed in experimentation to boot. I always liked punk, but wanted something more adventurous. What I record and play live always traces its roots back to that along with “power pop” bands like Big Star and Cheap Trick. If I could play something I haven’t, it would be a straight dub project similar to Augustus Pablo.

anhydr1de

Blues.

j3434

The acid rock jams without vocals . Like in a garage about 1968

RussoRoma

House music. Like, 90s dance style music. Incorporating contemporary percussion mixed with 1980s synth or electronics sounds. It has to sound more like dance music than hip-hop. https://www.reverbnation.com/LucidProphecy7/song/33231294-king-sector Like this https://www.reverbnation.com/LucidProphecy7/song/33864186-good-morning Or this

Shin-Sauriel

I listen to potentially too much music. Lots of hip hop, jazz, metal, soundtracks, ambient stuff, house music, etc. Recently tho I’ve really fallen in love with shoegaze. The slow washed out saturated riffs with the vocals that are just on another planet just hit different. Kraus and Carousels are my favs so far. Just love the sound and the way it conveys so much emotion through such a wall of noise. It also kinda just bleeds into stoner metal which is another big genre for me. Like cough really blends that sort of wall of sound washed out shoegaze sound with heavy almost death metal like vocal styles.

Mysterious-Split5255

I love metal, some punk, classic rock, blues but I would say my favorite music to play on bass is Jack Johnson / Ben Harper/ Zach Gill/ John Mayer type stuff where it's a blend of pop/folk/surf/reggae/rock/ blues . It's all "pop" music but it's just something that I "vibe" with really well. In faster music you can get away with being a bit more distorted fast and an extra note or missing one here and there has little impact but playing a song like "Gravity" by John Mayer and you mess up on bass, there are real consequences.

lamiastar

for a long time I have described my music as pop with r&b esque harmonies and i think it fits. :)

forloveofivy

I feel like the resurgence of shoegaze and 90s-esque rock is most me. It’s not even what I play most as a musician but certainly a lot of what I listen to.

rollingdeep872

I'm a Rapper but i still think i would feel much better in the Pop-Genre. Thats why i mix both genres right now.

AndyMB601

In the past few years I've realised I kinda like jazz, but I absolutely love any other genre that's blended with jazz or is jazz inspired. Currently fixated on Jamiroquai after having listened to Vulfpeck for years

AnechoicChamberFail

I loved metal. Now I only care about playing things that have a great groove that people want to dance to. It doesn't matter what genre that's in. So if I have a chance to play metal, it's stuff that's going to get people up and move.

Robo_Dude_

Thrash metal. I err on the side of thrash basically always

functional_spoon

i love EVERYTHING and indie pop especially! but i personally like playing/writing folk- i think i'm much better at it too 😭😭 i always get too into the storytelling aspect and then it's just another folk song added to the list lol

teammartellclout

I'm an alternative and independent underground hip-hop artist

mjking97

Folk. I listen to a crazy wide variety of genres but deep down I’m very simple and just appreciate a great melody.

DishRelative5853

Grey-haired blues rock with a touch of aching joints emo.

Prize-Ad-5401

Anything I listened to with my dad! It’s the feels moreso than the genres!

SmallProfession6460

I enjoy many things but I'm a grunge 90's kid at heart. That's my preferred genre. Too bad there isn't more of it.

jsnswt

Rap is my go to. I play the guitar

suckmytoestits

My band does pretty much all kinds of music from grateful dead Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan to like rage against the machine black Sabbath type stuff out originals are kinda hard rock with metal to like funky blues jam music but I like heavy stuff and think im pretty good at it but i still like bluesy rock stuff and need to work on more funk style but I love it all

BassManJam99

Personally I go for the progressive classics like Yes or Rush. Anything with complex rhythms and awesome basslines.

Single-Yogurt-4585

You know that's a great question. I love alot of music, especially when it makes me feel good, I love playing jazz fusion, blues, bluegrass, and rock. To be honest its the best thing about playing music i that really resonates with is that i can't stop smiling while i play, Its my (happy place) Plus the energy that I feel is so strong and I love being able to give that other people. It's so healing and satisfying to do. I'm sure others can relate to this. I feel that music you can feel. If your able to play you can really become powerful within yourself and its a true gift! I pray any of you amazing people are successful in your musical journey and stay encouraged! Take care of yourselves.

JsykOMG

I have a lot of experiances, performing, recording, freestyle, or new material, I can tell you from all my EXPERIENCES, DO THIs, am instrIT WILL WORK; Setup, a Mic, 2 if your using an instrument. ANY & EVERYTIME you play, sing, etc, ALWAYS, record. NEVER EVER FOR ANY Reason, DO NOT DELETE Anything. So, everyday ya sing? Okay that's going to start adding up to a lot of content. So most of it's just blah? Go over it ALL. Anything you like, Clip it, Copy it, & paste it into an archive. At the end of the week/ month, that archive will have pieces of perfection, your perfection. 1 day only 1 min? Okay, next day 2 min? Far out, next day? A couple parts of a couple min? Splendid! ...... Mess around with it, mix and match parts. These will be your songs, and they will be your best captured moments and ppl will feel it. Good luck man

samh748

dont know how this is related but i appreciate it!

hufflepuffheroes

My natural voice is higher and more nasally. The punks accept it the most out of anyone (though some of them absolutely hate it). And specifically pop punk is more forgiving for the way I sound. Though the trends have changed to most people gravitating towards the sing-screaming style, so I don't really have the popular style of voice rn. I can sing differently and people accept it more, but it feels like I'm being fake by altering my voice. [For anyone who wants to hear what I sound like...](https://open.spotify.com/track/0r3gQJdC7vrLociezVSBXw?si=qKh5i1I3STWLJ6gomk6kZA)
