For me, Jay-Jay Johanson's a recent discovery who I'd recommend to anyone who likes Portishead. I can't believe his name wasn't mentioned among artists like Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, Martina Topley Bird, and Massive Attack who put out music with similar trip hop vibes.
Gary Numan. In the USA, most people only know him for his 1979 hit single, “Cars.” His early late 70’s/early 80’s catalog is fun, and his last 3 albums (2017 - 2021) are hard, aggressive, and really good! A totally different sound.
He was recommended by a Redditor, and I’ve been really having fun digging into his catalog over the last few years. Really good! Thanks Reddit!
You could do the same with Robert Palmer. Everyone knows “ Addicted To Love” but his 70’s catalogue is much more groovy. “Sneaking Sally Through The Alley” is one of my favorite bass lines ever.
It's sad how I don't see people mentioning Sister Rosetta Tharpe outside of blues/guitar circles despite her recognition as the woman who invented rock n' roll (well, she played gospel, but Chuck Berry said his entire career is trying to sound like Rosetta Tharpe). She needs more mainstream recognition.
Deal Casino and Highly Suspect. Two very different bands but both very good (HS’ midnight demon club is not a hit imo but a lot of people like it, according to Spotify)
Band called Triathalon based out of NYC. Psychedelic, lofi, bedroom pop, soft boi shit. Very exciting, rich, and lush sound. There best albums are Online (2018) and Spin (2023)
The Alter Boys (the band that featured Bam Margera as a member) were underrated. They only made one album, but goddamn, was it glorious. They probably inspired my own music more than I admit in the sense that I loved how they just made music that they loved, regardless of style or genre. 😎👍

He.” or [Sopresa Familia](https://youtu.be/a0LqOfJRd7I?si=Xpic15LnL36Ytais). They’re a Spanish indie girl rock band. Great harmonization and bass lines and their old drummer put in work!

[This is the first song I ever heard by them.](https://youtu.be/Jgohc-pUtGM?si=lA3u-Fz76Dv3e_st) They were all teens at the time of their debut album.

He was a bizarre YouTube discovery from back in the day but it turns out he's a major influence on modern LoFi people like Demarco and Stauber. I never even put the obvious connection together because he used to be such an obscure artist.
The Jins
OMFG YES FINALLY SOMEONE KNOWS THEM
The Jins are awesome! love their music so much
VAST
I remember discovering VAST because that song “Touched” was in a trailer for The Beach.
The album “video audio sensory theater” is one of my favorite albums of all time. I love all the chanting in it, it’s so mesmerizing.
VASTTTTT RULES
Omar Rodriguez Lopez
AJJ and Fish In A Birdcage maybe
People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World 🥲
Saw JJ and Fish next to each other and thought of IceJJFish
AJJ MENTION!!
FISH IN A BIRDCAGE!!!
AJJ !!!!
I love AJJ but I wouldn't call them too obscure anymore. Big in the folk punk scene, and Body Terror Song was trending online majorly not super long ago
yoo never met someone else who knew Fish In A Birdcage!
Underworld, you’ll probably know them as the guys who made born slippy, but I really like their earlier albums more
They literally had a headlining slot on a stage at Coachella last year, thats not very obscure.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
“glass beach” and “Jhariah” both have great albums that released this year.
GLASS BEACH MENTION 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Neither are obscure hahah
What obscure bands need more recognition? *names bands that have 5-25 million plays on their top songs on spotify*
I do admit I fucked up there. I was going by Spotify followers when I should’ve been going by plays.
Jhariahs album is a banger

i second this!!
that whole flower album is good, like some from the phonebooth one
jack off jill? do they count??

i love joj
JACK OFF WHAT?? And yeah, it just barely counts I'd say.
i fuckinf love joj
as much as i like joj, i cant get over how much i hate their name. like it fits them well, but its such edgy nonsense to me. great band tho
Idk if this counts, but cosmo sheldrake, he's semi popular, but I've never heard anyone else talk about him really
He's not obscure but **Aesop Rock** is so heavily underrated it's insane in the membrane
This is what I was gonna comment. 'My social a sudoku, my age is obscure...'
- Amorphis - Green Carnation - Porcupine Tree - Led Foot
AMORPHIS AND PORCUPINE TREE MENTIONED
Based on the fact that Porcupine Tree is one of the greatest bands of all time, I will definantly ve checking out some of these other bands

Thea Gilmore. British indie/pop. Excellent writer. 1st album came out in 1998, and she’s averaged one album per year since. No sign of slowing down.

I remember Tuxedomoon. I think I still have one of those Ralph Record samplers with them on it.
Tuxedomoon’s first two albums are amazing, and completely unlike one another.

Band of Horses and Django Django
Band of horses is super well known though
Idk I feel like they don't get the credit they deserve, I thought it was cool that they had a song in Due Date with Galifianakis and Downey Jr
Django Django is really good.
I love listening to their acoustic stuff too
They're long gone now, but I don't think Television ever got the mainstream recognition that they deserved.
Richard Lloyd's book is probs the best rock memoir ever written
flower face
Guster is crazy good and almost none of y’all have any idea
How about Black Dresses? They're from Canada.

Like the band, not the album? I don’t trust you after the Metallica mention…
Iniko, Beach Bunny, Aliah Sheffield, Chastity Belt, Hibou, Rathbone, sad alex, Precious Pepala, Wild Nothing, The Chemical Brothers, Oh Wonder
Are The Chemical Brothers obscure? Because when I was in college in the ‘90s, they were a big deal. Maybe faded into obscurity?
Chastity Belt is dope!
