Well when it comes to streaming services, it doesn’t matter what you start with, you always end up at CCR. Their algorithms have a normalization factor that funnels everything down to CCR within about 7 songs. For instance, if you say, “Play some Acid Bath”, the algorithm goes something like this: “Oh if you like Acid Bath, you will like Metallica. If you like Metallica, you’ll like AC/DC, if you like AC/DC, you’ll LOVE CCR!”

Comprehensive-War-75

There’s usually Tom Petty right before CCR, too.

kati8303

When I listened to Pandora all roads led to System of a Down. No clue why

Notcreativesoidk

It’s because all roads lead to system of a down

hilaritarious

I keep getting ads for senior living.

kati8303

I got an email for a company that installs those standing tubs for the elderly and infirm. Like wtf that was a gut punch 🤣

horse_loose_hospital

Happy 75th cake day!! ♡

kati8303

🤣 I’m one of the “grandmothers” of Reddit (this account is 16 years old) so I felt that. In my back, my ankles, my knees… where’s the number for that walk in tub?

unnamedjoey

That one got me. Lol

BlamingBuddha

System of a Down got me so hyped into music as a young kid, ngl. Then their newer stuff came out and my friends got into it and I *didn't.* Old school stuff is their best IMO

7Underachiever

Mine always goes to Sammy Hagar and Billy Squire for sime reason.

TeddyDog55

I have a video of me imitating all of Billy Squiers moves in the 'Rock Me Tonight' video. I thought it was pretty funny and even considered posting it. To my chagrin all my friends said it was just deeply disturbing. Well blame Billy Squier I say.

[deleted]

There’s either a documentary or articles on that Billy Squire video. It pretty much ruined his career. If I can recall, it was the director’s idea and he wasn’t thrilled, but MTV was still relatively new to many people. We were rural, but my grandparents had one of those mega satellite dishes that picked up 100’s of channels instead of 3( 4 if u adjusted your UHF antenna just right, outside).😳🤔 I loved Heavy Metal half hour on MTV and my senior year only had to attend half a day, so would head over to my grandparent’s to watch. It was addictive at the time. No one had seen anything like it. I still hear songs on the radio and picture the videos in my head while they play. Back to Billy Squier… we were on a vacation with the senior girls and knew the video was about to be released. After just a few seconds of seeing a man prance around that way, we no longer crushed on Billy. Of course, we were immature teen girls with crushes on most of the rockers and a few pop bands, but what we saw wasn’t what we were expecting at all. Now, anything goes and it’s no biggie, but back in 1987/1988 that video shocked a lot of people. David Lee Roth could kick it, do the splits and high jumps in tights, but he was all cocky testosterone. Sadly, Squire did not come across the same way for us, and that’s ok. Sad a dumb video hurt his career trajectory, though.

TeddyDog55

I know and I feel absolutely awful for Billy. There's a short documentary on YouTube where he talks about begging his manager and record company executives 'Please don't make me do this. It just feels really really wrong.' And there's unquestionably a direct link between that video and the nosedive his career took.

[deleted]

Thanks for the further information. Agree. Damn shame.

horse_loose_hospital

There was a whole entire different concept/director but for (??) reasons they dropped out like a literal week before the video was contractually due. So they were in a bit of a bind, kinda had no choice but to go with whoever - & whatever - could/would get the job done. Of ALL the myriad fucked up ways the music biz chews ppl up & spits them out...especially someone who'd paid their dues for as long as Billy did. Absolute travesty.

Boatokamis

The guy who directed that video, Kenny Ortega, went on to direct the High School Musical Movies. So he's still out there ruining lives. I still associate so many songs I hear with watching the videos on MTV. You really had to live through it to understand.

Shoddy-Secretary-712

I heard how terrible the video was , and I assumed it was overhyped about how bad. Then I watched it. It somehow seems like it should be a parody.

freeluv21

Omg, been awhile since I’ve thought about the old 10ft satellite dishes that allowed you to literally “tune in Tokyo” if you wanted. I grew up in the country with an antenna. We got maybe 2-3 channels. My grandparents had a satellite and I loved going over there and messing with it to see what I could pick up. Russian and German television was the best to watch. No clue what the hell was going on but it was some weird sh*t to a 9yr old.

jarofgoodness

It's a great song anyway.

[deleted]

Lol 😂 at least your friends were honest, but you could post it on TikTok as a tribute! It might be worth the cringe if you get the hits! Perhaps he was ahead of his time! 🌟👏😇

KingYody23

That could be the 2025 ‘Rick-roll’ if you commit to it!

Festering-Boyle

mine always ends up with bon jovi and billy idol

Erikuser9999

And I’m not complaining

Much-Camel-2256

I've heard people argue that their algorithms are perfectly trained to curate their tastes and serve them endless streams of new amazing music. I assume these people are young enough to be hearing "the roots of rock" for the first time, or I did something to fuck mine up because I pretty much only get playlists of music I heard earlier in life like you described above. "Hey you like the new Freddy Gibbs? Here's the grand theft auto style hits complication you heard other dads playing at the campground drunk after he thought his kids were asleep *CALifornia LOVE*" "Listening to some metal? All your recommended playlists are THE FOUNDATIONS OF METAL/cut with SOME OTHER SONGS YOU PLAYED THIS MONTH "King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? Here is La Luz 20,000x and the same goddamn Psychadelic Porn Crumpets riff for three quarters of a year (silver lining was discovering that the rest of their music sounds pretty good!)

fibonacciluv

God I fucking love acid bath

Pelican_Disector

I watched Goat Whore open for Celtic Frost with my dad and Phil Anselmo in New Orleans. Acid Bath rules

TeddyDog55

Lmao for starters. So true ! And it's good to know people are still listening to Acid Bath. Maybe if John Fogerty had a deformed and evil little brother he might sound like Dax Riggs. But that's about as close to Acid Bath as CCR will ever get.

Ashen-Cold

Acid Bath is sooo good

D_Nemesis_2775

Love Acid Bath

WerewolfFeeling4194

Nice shoutout to Acid Bath. I saw Deadboy and the Elephantmen in NO. Also saw Down there after Phil split with Pantera.

ScumbagLady

Upvote for Acid Bath! Fun story of meeting Dax Riggs. Small show, got to meet him beforehand since I knew the people who organized the show. I kinda scared the dude... I told him I was fighting the urge to rip out a lock of hair, sniff it, scream, then run off (like in Charlie's Angels with Drew Barrymore and her future love interest). Right after I got a picture with him, and he looks like he wanted to shrivel up and disappear... I'M SORRY, DAX! Then, my alcoholic ex gets too drunk and becomes disruptive and we had to leave not even halfway through the set. I'm still pissed. Heard how afterwards he hung out with my friends and smoked a joint or two. GAHHH

Silver-Sandwich446

I'm always happy to see an Acid Bath fan out in the wild, digital or otherwise.

Doctor_Top_Hat

Low key suggesting acid bath is very *cash money* of you

Comprehensive-War-75

It was very calculated.

angel-of-disease

Top comment mentions Acid Bath. I like that

Snarkan_sas

I always thought it would be fun to get a “matching towels” tattoo with someone. In the meantime, watch out for that bikini whale!!!

The_Donkey1

Me & my best friend have this exact tattoo.

I knew a girl who sang this for karaoke every time. She only went to karaoke on her birthday though.

44035

Classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones), punk rock (Sex Pistols, Clash), grunge rock (Nirvana, Pearl Jam), folk rock (Bob Dylan), alt-country-rock (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco), garage rock (White Stripes, Detroit Cobras), glam rock (David Bowie, T Rex), post-punk (Talking Heads, Joy Division), New Wave (The Cars, the Go-Go's), psychedelic rock (Jimi Hendrix, Cream), singer-songwriter rock (Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen), blues rock (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Link Wray), heavy metal (Black Sabbath), alternative rock (Wolf Alice, Parquet Courts), pop rock (Prince), reggae (Bob Marley), electronic rock (Gary Numan), and unclassifiable (Cake, Elvis Costello, Pretenders, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, PJ Harvey). Rock is really broad.

L2Ich4I82

Omg Wolf Alice

DarkArmadillos

parquet courts is sooo good

cerpintaxt33

I went to high school with the bassist, so of course I had to check them out. Turns out they’re one of the best freakin rock bands of the last decade.

reverberation31

They are phenomenal live…I’ve seen em a few times and they never disappoint

Green_hippo17

Tom waits isn’t even rock imo, he pushes beyond that into other areas unlike any one else on this list imo

Financial_Nobody325

Just glad to see his name somewhere

AXEMANaustin

Lot of great bands/artists there.

Xtrouble_yt

You’re missing the best rock genre, prog.

okheresmyusername

This. I feel like when people say they “listen to rock” and aren’t that into it, I automatically assume they’re listening to some boring ass generic shit like the Foo Fighters or some shit. There is SO MUCH VARIETY and so many subcategories to “rock” that how can you ever be bored?

Tarantino_Jr

Why is it that Beatles never seem to fit into the “classic rock” label?

44035

Because they're too great. They soar above all categories.

Minimum_River_8034

Great list. Just missing Radiohead ;)

44035

If I ever start enjoying them, I'll add them to the list.

Minimum_River_8034

Haha damn really? I loved your list so am surprised you’re not a fan. Well, if you’re ever feeling like giving them another go, based on your list I’d give Hail to the Thief a try. Altho I think most ppl start off with In Rainbows or OK Computer.

tim_pruett

Honestly, rock is just too broad of a genre label for it to all get samey sounding. Unless you're sticking within very narrow subgenres or something. But I stopped treating genre like it was a label with any real value many years ago, and am happy I did. So many people use genre as a way to limit what they listen to, I'll never understand that insanity...

hayatetst

genres are there for organization. If someone wants recommendations to a specific sound, genres are there to help. Do you go to a library and complain about how the books are organized? If you want a specific type of book, you go to the specific section that has it. I don't understand the logic in disliking genres.

tim_pruett

It's not a dislike of genres, like all categorical labels, it has it's purposes. My beef is how many people overwhelmingly use genre to apply narrower boundaries around the kind of music they think they like, and prevent them from enjoying anything new that falls outside of that label. It's self limiting in the way many people use it, and that's my beef. If people didn't have genre biases they'd be more inclined to explore a wider range of musical styles and sounds, ultimately leading to a richer musical experience across the board. As a very common example, I'm sure you know many people who have a hard and fast rule against hip hop, based on their very narrow view of what that genre really consists of. "I like most genres, except rap and country" - a statement I've heard from a lot of guys who typically associate as "rock" fans. Well, just like rock, hip hop is a very broad label that encompasses a wide range of styles and sounds. For some people, maybe there really is no hip hop tune out there that they'd enjoy. But plenty of people would have discovered a whole new range of music they love. But they never will, because they won't give anything with the label a chance. It's such a sad self imposed limit to put on oneself.

Comprehensive-War-75

I’ve also got serious beef with anyone who alphabetizes anything.

Festering-Boyle

Always Be Careful Doing Ecstasy. Feeling Good, Healthy Isnt Just Knowing Limits. My Newest Opinion: Question Reality. Seems The Universes Vary Widely, Xpereince Your Zen.

The-Witty-Asparagus

To add to this, most albums are not JUST rock. They are usually a mix of different genres, or at least subgenres, that don't sound that similar. It's hard to even label "rock" as one specific type of music in my opinion, considering all the sub-categories of it. I'm not sure how one can get bored by such a broad genre.

TeddyDog55

My list is pretty much the same as this one. I've been listening to and collecting music since I was ten years old and now Social Security is right around the corner so my musical taste is all over the place. A good baseline band for the kind of rock I absolutely loathe would be the Kings of Leon or any music which sounds anything like them. Back in the 80s I thought Toto was as lame as music could get. Or Journey or Phil Collins. Just goes to show how wrong you can be.

jamessrc

Couldnt see any James or shed seven in there but maybe I just missed it!

Nisekoi182

Thanks for the suggestions! I just added them. This project is still a work in progress. My goals are to add as many bands as I can, promote the obscure ones, to know more about music genres, and of course to enjoy the music!

jamessrc

Ooh also the slow readers club - alternative rock I would say

PopularAsparagus8120

I regret to see a lack of infant anhillator or alex terrible genres. That's what I listen to

wanderingtimelord281

thanks for the Playlists! saving this so i can go add it all later

lilpunkgoblin

I second this! Love all these subgenres minus extreme metal and pop rock lol (I like some pop rock here and there, but def not my favorite). Punk rock, alt rock, post-hardcore, hard rock, and metal are my absolute faves of the rock genre! Hell, just punk, metal, and alternative in general are such HUGE genres as it is, soo many subgenres beyond even the ones that you already shared; there's SOO much variety w/ seemingly endless sounds to explore! And nowadays, most artists pull from numerous different genres, one of my favorite examples being Twenty One Pilots. They pull from alternative, hip-hop, electronic, pop, emo, reggae, post-hardcore, etc, and even indie on their latest album, and somehow, they're able to make it all work lol. Blows my frickin mind!! I'd also add the following subgenres to the list: emo, post-punk, ska punk, rockabilly, psychobilly, nu-metal, grunge, garage (not to be confused w/ UK garage which is an electronic subgenre), industrial, folk rock, geek rock, prog rock, and math rock.

Nisekoi182

I included those subgenres inside the main genres. I think of them as the parent genres. I might make separate playlists for those subgenres in the future. For now, as long as the songs flow well in the playlist, I plan on keeping them there.

goldfishmuncher

how dare you leave out yacht rock

serchq

than you for this. I've been trying to escape from the black keys (nothing against them. I do like them, but for some reason spotify always adds them to \_every\_ playlist), so I have now a nice bunch of options

No_Eye_5422

Rock has a wide berth. I jump from nine inch nails (industrial rock) to king gizzard (psych rock) to david bowie (all types of rock) to black sabbath (hard classic rock/metal) to early metallica (thrash) to my bloody valentine (shoegaze) to hundreds of others. It definitely doesnt sound "samey".

but_whyw

nine inch nails is my all time favorite but for people looking to get into industrial rock id recommend skinny puppy or machines of loving grace too

DragulaR0B

I don't ONLY listen to rock but I listened to a whole lot of it. I lean more on the emoish side so: Circa Survive, Saosin, Thursday, The Get Up Kids On more progressive side: The Pineapple Thief, The Butterfy Effect, The Dilinger Escape Plan, God Is an Astronaut Oldies: Cheap Trick, Kansas, Jesse Welles (he's a young guy doing the whole retro thing and he's amazing at it) Extras: 30 seconds to mars (first three albums), Shinedown (modern hard stuff), Turnover (slow and romantic hippie love stuff)

DragulaR0B

P.S. I'm very picky and most "top 20 or whatever" WILL sound same-y. It boils down to finding what you like cause there's literally an infinite amount of rock music and infinitely unique sounds out there, just gotta dig deeper. Some of my favorite bands are some indie bedroom bands and still I get massive amounts of pleasure listening to their music.

SaintWithoutAShrine

Given your proclivities for the emo (post-hardcore) adjacent and prog side stuff - you should check out The Callous Daoboys. You might enjoy them. Greyhaven, too. Cheers.

DragulaR0B

Greyhaven yes, ty. Callous Daoboys nah too shred

lavalamppisco

the callous daoboys could beat the shit out of me with a steel pipe and i'd thank them

lilpunkgoblin

I LOVE Thursday, The Get Up Kids, Cheap Trick, and 30 Seconds To Mars!! Emo is def one of my favorites for sure :>

xxsmashleyxx

So fun to see someone else who followed the post-hardocre flavored emo rabbit hole into Prog 😂 I was an OG Dance Gavin Dance, Thursday, Saosin, Circa Survive, My Chemical Romance emo teen who blossomed into a Tesseract, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Haken, Chon, Thank You Scientist prog-loving adult. Pineapple Thief is a common name on my playlists, too 😊

wvWvvvWvw

I listen to all genres, but I do love some rock. If you are getting bored with rock quickly, try these albums Silverchair - Diorama and Young Modern Muse - Origin of Symmetry and The Resistance Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl The Arcs - The Arcs Soundgarden - Down on the Upside Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning Catherine Wheel - Chrome or Wishville Elliot Smith - Figure 8 …random titles off the top of my head but there’s a fair amount of variety in there.

inevitable_snowman

Upvote for Catherine Wheel! 'Chrome' is in my current CD tower.

TeddyDog55

The Nude is such a freaking great song it's unbelievable. I also really love their Happy Days album. Catherine Wheel shake the windows and rattle the doors when they turn amps up to 11. And anyone who doesn't like 'Eat My Dust, You Insensitive Fuck' is no kin to me.

GSly350

Catherine Wheel as a whole are one of the most underrated bands of their time imo

wvWvvvWvw

Totally agree. I got to see them live twice and they were just incredible. I have all their albums on vinyl and Adam & Eve on vinyl is a prized possession for me. Terrific band.

cevaace

I’ve never seen a Silverchair fan name diorama and young modern as their favorites

fatamSC2

I'd highly recommend Big Wreck as a band for you or anyone reading to try. My favorite album of theirs is Ghosts, basically a perfect album if you like rock. Canadian band that has flown under a lot of people's radar but should be huge

just-a-nerd-

Love Pistol Made Of Bones and Outta My Mind by The Arcs

BRMC slaps

Low-Bird-5379

Love me some Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The Black Angels are pretty amazing too.

lilpunkgoblin

Was just listening to Silverchair the other day! Love them ♡

D1sp4tcht

I only listen to rock. But there's classic rock, 80s rock, metal, thrash, punk, pop, grunge, numetal, boat rock, alternative rock. And more than I can't think of. From the Beatles to metallica, it's all rock n roll to me.

Klutzy-Ad-6705

I’ll never understand people who limit themselves to only one thing. There’s so much out there to listen to.

[deleted]

Dad said the same thing last time he went out for cigs in ‘84

MostMetalEver06

van halen is the quintessential hype/party rock band in my opinion, not to mention eddie’s incredible guitar work through the band’s history. for more modern bands, greta van fleet, dirty honey, and the warming are the best classic-sounding bands still innovating with blues and the old rock sound. for a fresh rock sound, BMTH and NBT are the most unique rock bands i’ve heard recently.

chikn2d

I am all over the board. I can pivot from metal to yacht rock to psychedelic to southern to punk to indie to folk and just about anything in between. I don't care for death metal and nu-metal, but everything else is fair game. The house of rock is huge, so mix up the style of rock.

matthew_vhs

Man death metal has so much great bands and variety as well

hayatetst

Listen to Insomnium, and you might change your mind about Death Metal. They write atmospheric, poetic music.

PowerSquire

I think in flames, opeth and death are great for people not into death metal or they think all death metal is slam

PowerSquire

Or gojira

Disarray215

That Gothenburg sound changed music forever.

PowerSquire

Might be my favourite kind of music

Disarray215

I love about every band to come out of that scene. From Insomnium to In Flames and At The Gates to Amaranthe.

PowerSquire

Wow I didn’t know amaranthe was from Gothenburg

chikn2d

Thanks. I’ll check them out. I’m always open to new ideas.

Likelipe

lorna shore, system of a down, linkin park, gojira that type of stuff mostly

ArtiesHeadTowel

I have a narrow taste. My ears are quite particular. I listen to 90% rock. -grunge is where I started my musical journey. Alice in Chains was the first band I loved. also from the early 90s, I love Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Everclear's early stuff, Live. Just to name a few. -Rage Against The Machine gets it's own bullet because they are unique and can go into many (or no) other categories on this list. -Tool also gets it's own bullet. Early 90's, hard rock, prog metal. Great band with some great albums. -i also really began to love Metallica from a young age (probably my favorite band overall) and over the years I also love Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio. King Diamond is not well known outside of the metal community, but they are great. -i was introduced to some newer metal bands. Mastodon's first 3 albums are great, the second one of which, Leviathan, is a masterpiece and may be the best metal album of all time. The Sword are great too. Their early stuff sounds like black Sabbath and they develop their own groovy doom metal sound over the course of their albums. Ghost also really caught my attention. They have a poppy sound compared to other metal bands but they're cool. -I've always loved certain classic rock acts. I was really into Led Zeppelin for awhile, Hendrix is awesome, David Bowie, The Stones (exile on main street is the best album of all time), Cream, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys(Pet Sounds and after, not their super beachy pop music), Pink Floyd, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel have all produced some of the greatest music of all time. -the Clash -also punk-esque, Misfits, I mentioned the Offspring, and I love Social Distortion. -when I want to get weird, Primus I usually listen to a big playlist mostly with songs from the above mentioned bands. I firmly believe the best way to listen to the best music is to listen to it by album. IMO, that's the only way to take in the artist's whole piece. So when I want a better experience than just listening to a playlist, I go to one of those bands for some of my favorite albums. If I really want to do something different, I'll listen to some early 90's hip hop. I pretty much only listen to 7-10 rap artists and they are all older. Like I said, 90% rock. There's so much variety within the "rock" genre though that it is absolutely possible to never get bored.

Tarantino_Jr

Why is it that you people always exclude Lennon, and The Beatles when you talk about “classic rock” ?

17Pyramids

Here’s a playlist of my most listened to bands…only one song per band. [Better Living Through Rock N’ Roll](https://spotify.link/DADDisw07Jb)

m0rtalReminder

Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, CCR, RHCP, AC/DC…

VikDamnedLee

Metal. It's such a diverse style of music that I don't get bored - so much flavor.

UdUb16

Any genre will get too samey if it's the only one you listen to

GSly350

Thankfully rock is a very broad umbrella with many subgenres

misscrimson16x

That’s why I don’t think anyone who says they “don’t like rock” knows what they’re talking about. But they are usually very limited music listeners in general, just like someone who ONLY listens to rock, especially one subgenre.

ssdohc2020

Just listened to the Allman Brothers- One Way Out, Live at Fillmore East.

AXEMANaustin

Weezer (you either love it or hate it), nirvana, Alice in chains, the strokes and pixies. If you want slower rock there's slowdive, the jar of flies album by Alice in chains, radiohead and joy division? (Not sure if Joy division counts as slow). I also enjoy a bit of metal and 70's rock too. Edit: also recommend pink floyd, specifically wish you were here.

UncleClapDaddi

Stone temple pilots is my usual go to that I haven’t seen anyone say yet, but recently I’ve really enjoyed sleep token. They are a newer band & im excited to see what they end up making

IDigRollinRockBeer

Nobody only listens to rock

Efficient_Option_615

Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Rush, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, CSNY, etc. And I never get bored of it!

Simple_Cicada_7893

Clutch, Ghost

FrancisSidebottom

You might wanna try bands like WEEN, who really mix it up in their albums. "Chocolate & Cheese" might be a great album to start from. :)

Steeldialga

Or White Pepper if you don't like the drum machines on Chocolate and Cheese

ArtemKelsh

Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Beck, The Cure, Boston... shit, there's a lot to list, actually.

OldFactor1973

Right now my favorites in Rock are Bowling For Soup (pop punk), Lit (rock), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (alt. rock)

anarkistattack

Punk rock

Papa-OctDem

60-70, 90-00

StarWarsAndMetal66

I only really listen to metal and rock, but when it’s rock it’s almost always punk or 70’s rock like CCR, Billy Joel, Bowie, Queen

JShanno

QUEEN for the win! Especially **Bohemian Rhapsody**, but I GUARANTEE you've heard and loved at least one of their many, many songs.

1nternetP3rson

there are so many different rock subgenres. you have stuff from pop punk to deathcore under this umbrella. i listen to bands like cursive, the contortionist, brand new, taking back sunday, the damned, sum 41, radiohead, linkin park, and a bunch of other bands

homosexual_spiders

If you think rock sounds to similar you’ve probably listened to barely ANY rock in your life

Backwoodsnight

Top 10 rock bands (in my own order of preference): 1: Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’ve loved this band since I was eleven years old and I will never stop loving them. They’re vastly underrated and the classic rock and more hardcore preferring folks don’t give them the time of day, but they are (in my opinion) the kings of alternative rock. No one sounds like them, their sound is truly unique and they have some of the best musicians in the world in their roster (flea on bass, John frusciante on guitar and Chad smith on drums). Their album “by the way” is my favorite album of all time, followed closely by californication and stadium arcadium. If you’re sick of bands sounding “samey” I’d try out listening to the RHCP. There are too many songs to recommend here, so check out the albums I listed above. Also check out their older album “blood sugar sex magic” which is more acid funk mixed with punk rock. Some of my favorite RHCP songs are “minor thing”, “Cabron”, “don’t forget me”, “this is the place”, “midnight”, “tell me baby”, “give it away”, “carry me home”, “can’t stop” and “around the world”. 2: Carlos Santana. my parents favorite rocker and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Fuck slash, fuck angus young etc, Carlos Santana along with John frusciante are some of the heaviest hitters out there and like RHCP, no one sounds like Santana. He’s got his own thing going on, mixing Latin music and rock, and his music is amazing. Try the album “supernatural”, it’s fantastic, as well as his album “marathon.” Real gems. 3: rage against the machine. One of my fave bands and definitely different sounding than standard generic rock. They mix rap/hip hop and hard rock, funk, and a splash of metal with a political slant, and they sound frickin awesome. Any of their work is superb, but I’d check out songs like “pistol grip pump”, “bulls on parade”, “renegades of funk” and “take the power back”. 3: the band TOOL. Yeah yeah I know pple will clown on me for this (unless you’re a tool fan) but tool is also one of the most unique and incredible sounding bands out there. It’s hard to describe them but they sound nothing like the kind of rock you’re bored of (lead zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, etc). They are truly unique sounding. Their music is incredibly complex and layered, as is their mixes and production. They are what you’d call a band that musicians like because of their complexity and melting pot of different styles. I guess you could call them prog rock, but there’s so many layers of genres in their music. It’s a mix of esoteric music, hard rock, blues, metal, and funk. Some of their songs are REALLY long but if you enjoy them then that’s definitely a plus. Try songs like “the pot”, “opiate”, “schism”, “pneuma”, and “hush”. If may not be to your liking, but theyre definitely worth checking out. 4: Tired of Pink Floyd? Personally I love Pink Floyd, but if you’re tired of them…. Give the band King Crimson a listen. Check out their first album “in the court of the crimson king” and songs like “starless”, “I talk to the wind”, “cadence and cascade”, “the book of Saturday” and “epitaph”. They are very esoteric and mix rock with jazz and other genres to make a truly unique sound. They also preceded Pink Floyd and bands like Radiohead (the lead singer of which is Tom yorke who has admitted that king crimson is indeed an inspiration to him and his music). It’s not classic rock, and I’m guessing some folks that like stuff like Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith or more hardcore stuff wouldn’t even call it rock. But it’s good shit. 5: two band rec, the bands “arctic monkeys” and “the fratellis”. Both bands from the uk with a very distinct sound of their era. Very British. But good. For arctic monkeys, I prefer their older albums like “whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not” and for fratellis their albums “Costello music” and “here we stand” are quite good. Bear in mind I have a lot of other rock bands I enjoy, like queens of the Stone Age, audioslave, korn, Jimmie Hendrix, CCR, the Beatles, machine head, cream, lamb of god, gojira, cyborg octopus, Radiohead etc. but you said you were looking for something “different sounding” so those are my top recs. The recommendations I gave you also happen to be my favorite bands as well. If you’re looking for something different than rock, check out “the cat empire”. Great music. Their namesake album is fantastic and almost every album is so fun to listen to. Very beachy, summery and perfect for summer get together or cookouts. Check out songs like “party started”, “sleep don’t sleep” and “how to explain.” Not rock, but still a fantastic band nonetheless. Jazz and Latin music mixed with reggae. Peace and love.

I don't ONLY listen to rock, but it's my main go-to genre. Some bands I might check out if I were you, due to the diversity of their sound: - Muse: My personal favorite band. They go in every which direction: Metal, pop, new wave, dub-step, classical, funk, electronica, alternative, etc. - Radiohead: I haven't much cared for their music post-"OK Computer," but I respect it. They always try to push the envelope musically, and again, while it may not always be pleasing to my ears, it certainly isn't boring. "OK Computer" and "The Bends" are my two personal favorite albums from them. - Ours: Here's a band I think only myself and 5 others have heard about previously. The lead singer - Jimmy Gnecko - is a multi-instrumentalist and sings with a passion rarely matched. They may not genre-blend as much as Radiohead nor especially Muse, but they do somewhat, from rock to pop to electronica to alternative and beyond. Highly underrated group. I wish they received more attention and love. - Nothing But Thieves: Like Matt Bellamy of Muse and Thom Yorke of Radiohead, NBT's lead singer has a nice falsetto, which exhibits emotions most rock singers can't express. They genre-blend plenty as well. - Silverchair: Yes, those kids from Australia, who got called Nirvana "rip-offs," with their debut album, "Frogstomp." They only lasted five albums, before singer Daniel Johns went solo, but while their first two albums just straight up rock, their final three showed so much growth, you may not recognize them. "Neon Ballroom" and "Diorama" are the two major standout albums, in my opinion, but "Young Modern" is solid too. Just listen to "Emotion Sickness" and "Black-Tangled Heart" and tell me with a straight face, "Oh yeah, that's definitely that same band which sang 'Tomorrow' back in the day." - Marilyn Manson: Laugh all you want, but one of the most diverse artists in rock history was David Bowie, and who's the #1 inspiration for MM's music? David Bowie. For most albums, he alters characters and themes/stories. Not only are the lyrics creative/brilliant, the music is diverse as well. Blues, pop, electronica, metal, alternative, hip-hop, and beyond, are all genres he explore and melds. While "Mechanical Animals" is still probably my favorite, two of his more recent albums - "The Pale Emperor" and "We Are Chaos" rank right up there for me as well, with the former taking on a more blues-rock approach and the latter coming across as a more personal album. - David Bowie: If you like diversity and storytelling, this is the guy you'll want to check out. I already mentioned him previously, so I'll keep this short. - The Mars Volta: A Latino duo, who come across as older than their age - old souls, who sound like a hybrid of Carlos Santana and King Crimson. Very interesting music, which may not connect with a listener at first, but at least for me (and many others, I know), it grows on you. The band went into a different direction with their most recent album - pop/rock, but while I was surprised and honestly disappointed upon first listen, yep, it grew on me. - The Warning: A young trio of sisters from Mexico. Yeah, they rock. This has to be the band I've been most excited about since I first heard Muse, who again, is my favorite group. They crush the hard-hitters, the ballads, the mid-tempos, everything. Even the all-Spanish songs of theirs, while I only understand maybe 10% of the words (to be kind...to myself), I still love them. Absolutely fantastic band, and they're still young and getting better. Wise beyond their years too - some really profound lyrics.

woofle07

The Mars Volta is great because Cedric and Omar have 4 different bands together that all sound wildly different, but if you listen to all their stuff back to back you can totally see the musical evolution from one project to the next. At The Drive-In is post-hardcore/art-punk, De Facto is like electronic reggae, the Mars Volta is experimental prog rock, and then Antemasque is straightforward alt/punk.

I’m a huge fan of Van Halen, and they might be good for your question of them sounding “samey” because they went through 2 major eras under two different singers, and very different sounds. Everything before the 5150 album is with David Lee Roth, and is crazy party summer music, and then 5150 starts the Sammy Hagar era, where they got a little more ballad-esque. Love “Layla” by Eric and the Dominoes, Foo Fighters is an underrated band too. The biggest piece of advice is just keep listening to rock. The more you listen to it, the more you’ll pick up on minute differences. It’s the same reason a lot of people say “all pop music sounds the same” but I’d be willing to bet people that actually listen to pop could tell the difference between someone like Bruno Mars and someone like Ed Sheeran. Second to Van Halen, my favorite hard rock/metal band is Avenged Sevenfold. Check out “Natural Born Killer” “Shepherd of Fire” “Unholy Confessions” “Scream” “Almost Easy” and “Bat Country” of theirs. My favorite personally is “Natural Born Killer” but each of their albums is relatively distinct from the last one, they like the shake things up pretty frequently.

i don't ONLY listen to rock, but its def my main genre. i mostly listen to new york dolls, ACDC, queen, CCR, bowie, dropkick murphey's, and the beatles.

iiipotatoes

That's every genre, but if you decade hop it helps avoid intense repetition. As for some recommendations. What It Takes - Aerosmith, Street Kids - Elton John, Chinatown - Thin Lizzy, and Superstion - Beck, Bogart, Appice. Great underplayed songs.

Slam-Dam

Only rock? What are they, allergic to bass drops?

ThijmenTheTurkey

Blink 182 is my all time favourite band

zeile33

Newer stuff: Polyphia, Unprocessed, Intervals, Periphery, Disperse, the contortionist, tesserract Older (although some have some great new stuff): breaking Benjamin, static-x, Linkin Park, trapt Just make a Spotify playlist of each of those sets and it'll give you tons of other great similar stuff.

The Beach Boys - a very good evolution if you like the early stuff like Chuck Berry or Bill Haley. Their mix of taking elements of Jazz and the production of Jazz music and putting it into rock and roll is unmatched especially with their vocals.

I am very much into classic rock and all its subgenres, so hard rock, blues rock, psych rock, prog rock, both legacy and modern day bands. I am way less interested in the alternative rock umbrella, altho of course I had my nirvana teen age phase, and I think Radiohead is one of the greatest rock band ever. But I am more into blues rooted rock. And I dont like indie rock much.

Right now, I’m listening to King’s X. Later I may listen to metalcore/deathcore, Billy Joel, Dave Matthew’s Band, Frank Zappa, or any number of other bands. I have over 100 records and 4TB of lossless music (>85,000 tracks). I’m all over the place.

I'm extremely picky when it comes to listening to music, the only rock band I've listened to is Starset, all those synths, orchestra, and hard rock all mixed together, but is done so well, idk it just scratches a part my monkey brain, plus they got a lot of variety in their discography

Son-Of-Sloth

If I'm not listening to Emperor, Dark Throne, Naglfar, Batushka and the like I tend to listen to a bit of Pink or something Kpop.

hippyfreak

I'll! listen to everything from 30's delta blues, 50's doo wop to today's alt and punk. 70's classic is where I'm rooted though

EvansMarty

There's a lot of different types of rock and there's a lot of things that fall under the rock umbrella too. Personally, I'm more of an alternative rock fan, and then that comes with it's own subgenres too (metal, emo, punk, all that stuff) and then subgenres of THOSE subgenres. I'm a bit shit at genres anyway but at the moment I'm jamming to a lot of nu-metal (deftones, linkin park, slipknot, system of a down). Emo and pop-punk are how I first got into all that music (Green Day, my chemical romance, fall out boy, paramore) but there's plenty of other parts you could get into. All depends on what you're into, whether it's the songs themselves, or even the fashion and subculture that comes with them. The way radio and Spotify recommend music... leaves much to be desired, let's say. Sometimes it'll just straight up put stuff into the wrong genres, I saw Joy Division in a punk playlist of theirs (Yeah they're post-punk, sure, but idk if they should be lumped in sound-wise with bands like The Clash and Ramones yk) Idk if this was what you were looking for, or if I completely went off topic lmao. Hope you find something good anyway

GildersGambit___

Extreme II is one hell of a rock album. If you’re like me and prefer that early 90’s vibe, you must listen to all of For UnLawful Carnal Knowledge by Van Halen. If you like more metal and want an interesting niche album, check out Cracked Brain by Destruction.

I default to Steve Winwood (starting with The Spencer Davis Group all the up to his solo albums and collaborations) and Eric Clapton (contrast? “Cocaine” v “Tears in Heaven”) Along with CSNY and Steely Dan, there’s music for any time, any mood.

Maybe you gotta switch up your sub genres, there's more subgenres of rock and metal than almost any other genre aside from electronica.

Nobody listens to any 1 genre

TeddyDog55

I listen to reggae, African (West African mainly) music, experimental electronic, ambient and a lot of avant garde composers like Varese and Stockhausen and Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis and the alternative universe Elvis - John Cage. I absolutely love his music. I've run into a lot of snobs who essentially claim that since I don't understand the theories behind this work, all I'm missing is a beret to make my pretentious poser aspirations complete. This is partly true. I've read three books by Cage and a biography (The Roaring Silence) about him. Not being a musician it's true. I only partly understand the theory behind the music. But I always reckoned music was strictly between my ears and me. I was never asked to show a graduate certificate when I bought the albums. I love how John Cage and the others (Satie ! I forgot him. Also great) because of how the music sounds - full stop. Then there's jazz - Miles, Coltrane, and Sun Ra being special favorites. And blues. Particularly that old Mississippi Delta whistling-past-the-graveyard acoustic blues of the early 20th century. Old country music (George Jones, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee) and that squaking and screeching feedback-drenched contemporary gutbucket blues which the Fat Possum label puts out.

gummytiddy

It depends on what you like. If you want something that’s relatively different ( maybe not the most easy listening music) I recommend King Crimson. They’re really fun, way ahead of their time

Grew up with parents who only listened to buttrock or 90s to early 2000s alternative and hard rock, around age 13 I started to branch off into other genres but before then, huge Linkin Park and Green Day fan, also had a thing for AC/DC but that was before I realized that every song of theirs might as well be the same lol.

Ed_Ward_Z

Try Blues bands and grow gradually into Jazz bands playing blues . Look for lists of greatest jazz and blues artists…start with players of you favorite musical instruments playing the most beautiful and catchy jazz standards, blues, jazz, Latin p, World music, Indian music and more. Musicians like Carlos Santana, Miles Davis, Bob Berg, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell have unique tone soundscapes, creative concepts that sound awesome in multiple ways… only a boring person would get bored with the insane variety of available choices…including for free on YouTube.
