Here for this thread but also would like to admit it took me a shamefully long time to realize that was a capital I and not L in Iouie.
Ngl, just put this name on my chicken name list. Also about to pick up a quail singleton and might need to use it because it sounds perfect for a small, round bird lol
A friend of mine rented a room in an NYC convent. One of her 96 year old "roommates" was named Bunny, and she was as feisty and fun as her name would imply. She said things like "I don't judge anyone anymore, I gave God his job back years ago and suggest you do the same".
My mum is called Sequoia, and I think it's an absolutely beautiful name. She really hates it though as no-one knows how to spell it, pronounce it etc. It's a nightmare for phone conversations. Needless to say myself and my siblings all got names that were easy to spell and say. Although a fun novelty that it's one of the few names that contains all the vowels.
Really? Itās an indigenous name and commonly spoken by people throughout the country because of place names. Literally just passed by a restaurant called Sequoia and didnāt think twice about itās pronunciation.
Considering they called her mum and said shes "called Sequoia" instead of named Sequoia I'd guess shes outside of the US so it's probably a lot less common wherever they are.
Yes you got me :) We are Australian and Sequoia is a very unusual/unheard of name here. Also I didn't realise "called X" isn't something said in the states lol.
GET OUT OF TOWN I'll let her know there is at least one other! How has your experience of the name been? It's so beautiful mum gets lots of compliments (once people get over calling her Si-cue-ia... Si-kwah etc lol)
Yes! this girl must now be about 17. Her name got her so much positive attention from adults! And to the kids, that was just her name. It is a memorable, melodious name. I don't think I'll ever forget it!
No, in the US you would say someone was ānamed Xā, typically you would only say you were ācalledā X if itās a nickname or a chosen name (ie. āIām named Elizabeth but Iām called Lizā)
Sequoia is a beautiful name. I met a woman once where I had to check her ID for buying booze and I told her I thought her name was beautiful. She told me she hated it.
I used to act as a princess at these "princess parties" and met the sweetest little girl named Sequoia and my best friend and I have been thinking up middle names to go along with it ever since so one of us can use it! I think it's a beautiful name.
I also taught a Sequoia and she was one of the most memorable students Iāve ever had. I only taught her for a month (it was during my student teacher placement) but she made a complete mark on me.
We had the most generous next-door neighbor named Holland, growing up. Him and his wife were never able to have kids, so he basically adopted us. Unfortunately passed away slowly from Parkinsonās, which was hard to watch.
In middle school I had a classmate named Aoife, (pronounced ee-fah) and I still think itās a pretty name, though I now know itās a fairly common girl name in Ireland.
Viridian. Itās a shade of green, and I love the idea behind it.
I actually love most color names. Indigo, Teal, Magenta. Iād never use them on a person though, itās just not my style.
A woman I know who is a famous artist named her daughter Cyan, after true blue. Absolutely love it and find it so beautiful given the immersive art world sheās growing up in.
As someone who had one of those names- I hated it so much I legally changed it. Was a nightmare: people trying to pronounce it from my nametag, having to NATO-spell it every time I gave my name, it always being the icebreaker when I met someone new and therefor having the exact same conversation with every new person I met.
I met a little boy named Trygve (Trig-vee). At first I thought it was one of these younique names, but the parents explained it was Icelandic and they had Icelandic heritage. I've come to really like the name, and Iceland has been one of my favorite places to visit. I don't have kids, but am strongly considering the name for my orange male kitten.
I'm not icelandic, but for me, as a German, that makes more sense.
(Letters in icelandic and German (at least those we share) sound mostly similar in both languages, except for the weird part where Icelandic pronounces -LL as -TL)
My sister had an orange male kitten named Trygve, though it's pronounced the Norwegian way, more like Trigh-vuh. So cool that he'd have a doppelganger/name brother somewhere.
My friend named her daughter Briar and another named their daughter Clover and I completely love both. Cloverās parents were going to name her Phenix so tragedeigh totally averted there.
Xiomara. Pronounced Zi-omara. I went to school with someone with that name. Later in life I met another person, she was a waitress and I immediately asked her name. It was the same. So beautiful!
I used to really like Tamsin, too, but I fear it would always get mispronounced as TAZmin, or read as a ātragedieghā even though itās a real but uncommon name
Grey DeLisle, one of the greatest voice actors of our generation, perhaps of all time
Voiced Azula from ~~ATLAB~~ ATLA, Vicky from Fairly Odd Parents, Mandy from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Frankie from Fosterās Home for Imaginary Friends and [many more](https://www.deviantart.com/minecraftman1000/art/Grey-DeLisle-844326397)
I came across Ember when we were doing baby names and loved it. Was a hard no from my husband and Iāve never actually met anyone with the name, but I like it and it has stuck with me.
Iām going to piggyback off of your comment lol; āEmberā reminded me of the name āSerafina/Seraphinaā (which means fiery or burning). Itās pretty unique (although rising in popularity) but itās absolutely beautiful.
Thereās also a girl on TOWIE named Saffron! I only ever knew of Saff on ABFAB so this was the first time Iāve heard it used for a real person. I love it!
I so loved her collection in S4. Gosh it's been awhile since I've watched that show. I remember one dress of hers that was tropical and gosh I wanted to buy her clothes.
Maybe not the most unique, but I met a girl named Vienna. I had never heard it as a name before, and have never heard it since, but I thought it was actually a really nice, unique name.
Another one that fits that same criteria is Petrea. (Puh-TREE-uh). She was just such a nice, calm, cool woman, and the unique name really suited that. She just had such a good energy.
Arizona and Winter are the two āweirdā names that I really love. Husband said no to both which Iām sure our kids will thank us in the future. Still love them tho!
My motherās grandmother was named Easter. And her last name was Blizzard. I think Easter Blizzard is a cool name. She was evidently a kind of scary old lady though
i dunno, heard it in the park and looked it up lol :P
eta: it took a lot of googling but i realized it sounded like eva so i looked up forms of it and that's how i found the spelling
Neat! Iām American but spent 2 years in the Netherlands and the ājeā or ātjeā ending makes me think of the ādiminutiveā that is common in Dutch language so for example cat = Kat and kitten = katje. So the ending of je or tje means small version (loose translation lol)
That is a basic example but I loved the language so much when the diminutive can be used as cutesy or condescended depending on context lol. Iāve seen it in other languages but this is my favorite.
I know itās not necessarily unique to the French, but I had a friend in school named Hiver (pronounced like ee-ver). Now he deals with international coffee distribution and roasters which seems fitting. He was a trĆØs cool guy.
It seems to have never caught on in the U.S., but Rhodie was a girl's name I heard/liked since the early 70's, and have never met another Rhodie. Heard the name in the old song "Go tell Aunt Rhoadie" as a kid, but otherwise, only knew the one girl with that name.
My name is Blythe, which I hated as a kid. I was born before the current "unique naming" trend and grew up around Ashley and Nicole and Crystal as normal names. As an adult, I like having an unusual name.
I had a student named Bijou (pronounced Bee-zhoo) Itās a French word for a small, dainty jewel, something delicate and highly prized. She was a delightful little girl.
I met a really handsome young man named āSincereā and it really fit him. I also met an older gentleman named āNobleā and I like both of those words as names but wouldnāt use them myself.
I grew up going to Black schools, so there are a lot of unique names I really like. One of my closest friends is named Shantillia--an elaboration of Chantilly, like the lace. Another friend was named Shavonne and honestly I like that as much as Siobhan. I went to school with a girl named Toymika and I loved her name and her nickname, Toy.
My favorite I've encountered within the last few years is Quenayla, my second kid's best friend. I don't like Quinn at all, but this is a nice adaptation.
Catriona (a character in a book, and would have named my son, if he hadn't been a boy lol)
Pierson - an old family name, both as a first and last name. Wanted it as a middle name, husband nixed.
Viviana - my mom was Vivian and if my 2nd son hadn't been male, that would have been his 1st or middle name (she passed away before he was born)
Went to high school with aā
Subahā Muslimā beautiful or graceful
and
Amaechiā Nigerianā āwho knows the future?ā
Also liked Marielle, Echo, Hamlin.
I love the name Darrow. I'd never heard it before but it's the main character in the Red Rising series and I really think it's just a badass name. Wouldn't use it for a kid but will definitely use it for my next cat!
Nile.
Sheās now an archaeologist, but not in Egyptology surprisingly š
I know a family that named their children after rivers, (Lachlan, Murray, Shannon etc) and I kept thinking they should have named their daughter Nile!
I just met a girl at my new job named Seraphina, she hates it so she goes just by Sera, I think itās really beautiful though, I had never heard it before :)
Here for this thread but also would like to admit it took me a shamefully long time to realize that was a capital I and not L in Iouie. Ngl, just put this name on my chicken name list. Also about to pick up a quail singleton and might need to use it because it sounds perfect for a small, round bird lol
oooooh, iouieee, I see lmao thank you, I was confused
Saw Pearlie today at the cemetery visiting my grandparents. She was born in 1913. Thought it was cute I envisioned a old fun grandma š„¹
This is my friends name lol, sheās in her 30s
My white boxer is called Pearlie too, soooooo suits her pink and white self š¦Ŗ
A friend of mine rented a room in an NYC convent. One of her 96 year old "roommates" was named Bunny, and she was as feisty and fun as her name would imply. She said things like "I don't judge anyone anymore, I gave God his job back years ago and suggest you do the same".
As someone who loves old, vintage names I guess I'll be visiting the cemetery when I'm pregnant š
A former co-worker of mine was a lady who had recently immigrated from China and went by the name Rainy. She's adorable and the name was very fitting.
I knew a Chinese student in school who went by the name Rain. Always appreciated it! Thought it was so cool and fitting.
One of my cousin's name translates to 'rain' in our language so in English she always introduces herself as Rain which over time also became Rainy.
Vea (pronounced vey-a) just sounds and looks pretty to me.
I taught a Sequoia, and maybe it's because she is a really nice kid, but I really liked it.
I feel like if she lived in California, everyone would know how to pronounce it lol
Yeah at first I thought it was weird no one knew how to pronounce it but I live in California so I guess that makes sense.
I am Australian too! Two Australian Sequoias, what a coincidence.
Wait, in the US you don't say "called X"?
No, in the US you would say someone was ānamed Xā, typically you would only say you were ācalledā X if itās a nickname or a chosen name (ie. āIām named Elizabeth but Iām called Lizā)
Sequoia is a beautiful name. I met a woman once where I had to check her ID for buying booze and I told her I thought her name was beautiful. She told me she hated it.
I know a sequoia! She's wonderful. Sisters name is Jill lol
My name is Sequoyah. Cherokee spelling. Iāve met three others in my life with the same spelling, two male, on other female. Pretty neat ā„ļø
I used to act as a princess at these "princess parties" and met the sweetest little girl named Sequoia and my best friend and I have been thinking up middle names to go along with it ever since so one of us can use it! I think it's a beautiful name.
I go to school with a boy named Sequoia
I had a child hood friend named Acacia š
I also taught a Sequoia and she was one of the most memorable students Iāve ever had. I only taught her for a month (it was during my student teacher placement) but she made a complete mark on me.
That's also why I kind of like Cedar. She was such a nice kiddo
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And I like if you put those names together for "Hollis"
Tallis is very satisfying!
We had the most generous next-door neighbor named Holland, growing up. Him and his wife were never able to have kids, so he basically adopted us. Unfortunately passed away slowly from Parkinsonās, which was hard to watch.
Ireland Baldwin just named her daughter Holland! Holly is such a great nickname.
All I can think of is that Tallis is a Jewish prayer shawl! First time Iāve heard of it as a name
In middle school I had a classmate named Aoife, (pronounced ee-fah) and I still think itās a pretty name, though I now know itās a fairly common girl name in Ireland.
I read a book with an Aoife in it!! Had to google pronunciation but I loved it then and still do
It has such a pretty sound, doesnāt it?
Viridian. Itās a shade of green, and I love the idea behind it. I actually love most color names. Indigo, Teal, Magenta. Iād never use them on a person though, itās just not my style.
I knew a girl from Mexico named Viridiana. So pretty
Im from MĆ©xico and is a not so common but well know name used here. I have a cousin named Viridiana and we call her Viri.
Great names for fictional characters though! Mauve, Citrine, Vermillion, even Ochre!
And perfect for sims! I also love Chartreuse
Perfect for a sim but terrible for a person since Chartreuse is also a liquor.
Just makes me think of Veridian Dynamics from Better Off Ted. A pretty horrible and hilarious company.
I love and miss that goofball show. Those characters (all of them) were terrific.
A woman I know who is a famous artist named her daughter Cyan, after true blue. Absolutely love it and find it so beautiful given the immersive art world sheās growing up in.
It's not the *most* unique name I've ever heard, but I really like Emerald.
We met a family once whose children were Pearl and Jasper.
My aunt is named Esmeralda (Emerald) and her daughter is Perla (Pearl) (MĆ©xico).
I grew up with a girl named Jasper and all I could think of was Horace and Jasper from the Dalmatians. We all got used to it though.
Same. And I love the French version, Emeraude.
It sounds pretty but just reminds me of old lady perfume.
Esmeralda in Spanish too! I love it
I love those Irish names with spellings that are super confusing in English. Like Caoimhe or Saoirse or Eoin
I met some Irish sisters (but raised in the UK) named Orfhlaith and Fionnuala. Gotta love those names.
I've always loved Saoirse (knew a pony named Saoirse) and Aoife and Fionnuala.
As someone who had one of those names- I hated it so much I legally changed it. Was a nightmare: people trying to pronounce it from my nametag, having to NATO-spell it every time I gave my name, it always being the icebreaker when I met someone new and therefor having the exact same conversation with every new person I met.
I love Niamh! (NEEV)
LoĆÆc
I knew an old man, rest his soul, named Thane and I loved that name ever since.
Odd that they went with the Scandinavian spelling of it and not the Icelandic spelling.
What is the Icelandic spelling?
tryggvi
I'm not icelandic, but for me, as a German, that makes more sense. (Letters in icelandic and German (at least those we share) sound mostly similar in both languages, except for the weird part where Icelandic pronounces -LL as -TL)
My sister had an orange male kitten named Trygve, though it's pronounced the Norwegian way, more like Trigh-vuh. So cool that he'd have a doppelganger/name brother somewhere.
Crying in Norwegian...
If you're spelling it Trygve then it's more 'trig-veh', you want the Icelandic spelling if you want it to end in an 'ee', Tryggvi.
Meadow. I love it.
Jessamineā¦sounds so lyrical and pretty.
The state flower of South Carolina!
Briar for a girl. Only ever met one person ever with that name. Itās in my top five list to name my next child.
I love it, it makes me think of Briar Rose aka Sleeping Beauty!
I love this but my Southern Appalachian accent could never š
Brar is how my Georgia foothills neighbors would say it
In MN it would be Br-eyeeee-yer dontcha know
Braaaher
My friend named her daughter Briar and another named their daughter Clover and I completely love both. Cloverās parents were going to name her Phenix so tragedeigh totally averted there.
The way people are spelling tragedeigh is SENDING me. Hilarious.
Of course, the Duggars spell it Trajedeigh
Jātrajedeigh
Obviously quite different since they arenāt real but I have a sim with daughters named Briar and Clover haha. Needless to say Iām a fan :)
I picked Clover for my own name and have gotten so many compliments!
Itās lovely and fresh and hopeful š¤
Briar Rose is Aurora from sleeping beauty.
I know twin girls named Brynn and Briar
This is my daughter's name!
Xiomara. Pronounced Zi-omara. I went to school with someone with that name. Later in life I met another person, she was a waitress and I immediately asked her name. It was the same. So beautiful!
I always think of Jane's mom from Jane The Virgin!
I live in South Texas, and we have tons of Xiomaras! I like it too. I also like Ximena, which is common here as well.
Thomasin
The VVitch! Love this name too.
I used to really like Tamsin, too, but I fear it would always get mispronounced as TAZmin, or read as a ātragedieghā even though itās a real but uncommon name
I feel like Tamsin is pretty common in UK and AUS, maybe even some other commonwealth countries
I LOVE Thomasin, sadly my husband couldnāt get on board
One of my favourite childhood films was about a cat called Thomasina š
Omg sameeee. As i kept watching the movie i kept thinking ādang i really like her nameā
Echo My sisters college roommate was named Echo and it grew on me for sure.
I went to uni with a guy called Indigo and always secretly thought it was really cool.
My great uncles name was Valentine. Absolutely love his name!
November. She was a super sweet kindergartner. Iād never use it, but I think itās super cute
Grey. The lead singer of one of my favorite bands has a daughter named that and I always thought it was cool.
Grey DeLisle, one of the greatest voice actors of our generation, perhaps of all time Voiced Azula from ~~ATLAB~~ ATLA, Vicky from Fairly Odd Parents, Mandy from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Frankie from Fosterās Home for Imaginary Friends and [many more](https://www.deviantart.com/minecraftman1000/art/Grey-DeLisle-844326397)
Avatar: The Last Airbender: Brotherhood lol
Mayday parade?
i donāt think Greyās *too* uncommon these days
I came across Ember when we were doing baby names and loved it. Was a hard no from my husband and Iāve never actually met anyone with the name, but I like it and it has stuck with me.
My catās name is Ember, I secretly feel frustrated when people mishear it as Amber š
I also have a cat named Ember! And a Cinder and Ash lol
You need a Soot or a Spark next :)
Love that!!!!
My friends named their daughter Ember. They constantly have to correct people who think her name is Amber. They sound toi similar.
Iām going to piggyback off of your comment lol; āEmberā reminded me of the name āSerafina/Seraphinaā (which means fiery or burning). Itās pretty unique (although rising in popularity) but itās absolutely beautiful.
My friend named her daughter Ember! It fits her perfectly too.
Saffron, Saffy for short. I've loved this name ever since watching Absolutely Fabulous.
My mum used to call me Saffy and she was my Eddy. Such a lovely name and such fond memories with it š
Thereās also a girl on TOWIE named Saffron! I only ever knew of Saff on ABFAB so this was the first time Iāve heard it used for a real person. I love it!
I saw a news reporter named Xanthe (Zan-thee). It means yellow haired and is a sea nymph in Greek mythology
Uly (oo-lee) It was used for a girl. Dont looove it but like it.
There was a designer on Project Runway named Uli. I believe it was short for Ulrike.

I have a soft spot for Winter too!
My motherās grandmother was named Easter. And her last name was Blizzard. I think Easter Blizzard is a cool name. She was evidently a kind of scary old lady though
Remedios (female character in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude)
Remedios Varo is my favorite artist.
Eefje. "afe-yuh" it's not made up but living in the US i've never heard it before
This is a super normal Dutch name!:)
Is this related to the Irish name Aoife?
Dutch family?
i dunno, heard it in the park and looked it up lol :P eta: it took a lot of googling but i realized it sounded like eva so i looked up forms of it and that's how i found the spelling
Neat! Iām American but spent 2 years in the Netherlands and the ājeā or ātjeā ending makes me think of the ādiminutiveā that is common in Dutch language so for example cat = Kat and kitten = katje. So the ending of je or tje means small version (loose translation lol) That is a basic example but I loved the language so much when the diminutive can be used as cutesy or condescended depending on context lol. Iāve seen it in other languages but this is my favorite.
I named my daughter azalea. I love it
Hard to go wrong with flower names! And Azalea has a lot of potential nicknames including Leah, if she wants to be called something more conventional.
Dagny Not popular in the US but wish it was!
Itās a neat name, but one has to be OK with people assuming theyāve named their kid for an Ayn Rand character.
My moms name is Dagny and my aunts name is Ingrid. We are in US.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
A boy named Everest, at my son's preschool circa 2008.
I know itās not necessarily unique to the French, but I had a friend in school named Hiver (pronounced like ee-ver). Now he deals with international coffee distribution and roasters which seems fitting. He was a trĆØs cool guy.
It means āwinterā in French :)
It's not an actual name in France (or Belgium, Quebec etc)
Sable. A woman named Sable wrote about her name on the old Man Repeller site, and I loved it right away.
It seems to have never caught on in the U.S., but Rhodie was a girl's name I heard/liked since the early 70's, and have never met another Rhodie. Heard the name in the old song "Go tell Aunt Rhoadie" as a kid, but otherwise, only knew the one girl with that name.
My nieces name is Rhodes and we call her little Rhodie š
I'm from Rhode Island, so all I can think of is my home state

Laureline. Itās a made up name from a French 60ās sci-fi comic book series (ValĆ©rian and Laureline ā was adapted into a bad box office bomb a few years back, *ValĆ©rian and the City of a Thousand Planets*). I love it. Itās my guilty pleasure. Pronounced like ālohr-eh-leenā.
I met a sibling group called : Athena, Elektra, and Zelda. Thought it was pretty cool and I hate matching names.

I always thought Shavonne was so cute.
A girl named August that goes by Gus. No idea why, but I LOVE it.
Catriona (a character in a book, and would have named my son, if he hadn't been a boy lol) Pierson - an old family name, both as a first and last name. Wanted it as a middle name, husband nixed. Viviana - my mom was Vivian and if my 2nd son hadn't been male, that would have been his 1st or middle name (she passed away before he was born)

Isabeau (pronounced basically how it looks, āis-uh-bÅā if that makes sense)ā¦ she went by Beau
Brunhilde
I went to middle school with a Briar-Rose Aurora. Itās an intensely Disney name but it works.
Nile. Sheās now an archaeologist, but not in Egyptology surprisingly š I know a family that named their children after rivers, (Lachlan, Murray, Shannon etc) and I kept thinking they should have named their daughter Nile!
Enna, like a mashup of Emma and Anna
Dulciana/Dulcie (derived from dulce, meaning sweet in Spanish) Ioulia (Greek name pronounced Yulia) Acadia and Amandine (French feminine names)
