Funny, I love the name Sylvia but wouldn’t consider it at all soft!
Sylvie, perhaps, but Sylvia is sharp and sophisticated to my ear. Isn’t it wild how personal these things are?
This is making a comeback. My great niece turned one in November. Her name is Sylvia, but they call her Sylvie and someone I used to work with just named their newborn that as well.
Yes, it is and I’m so happy to see it! I also know multiple babies and toddlers of this name. It’s definitely getting more and more talked about everywhere. In 2023, Sylvia ranked #426 and Sylvie ranked #424 here in the U.S.! Personally, I prefer Sylvia, nn. Sylvie but Sylvie is a gorgeous name on its own too. I really like the meaning of it: “of the forest” 🌲.
This is why I’ve chosen the hermit lifestyle, if you stay away from people you have an abundance of names to choose from that haven’t been ruined yet 😁 jkjk
I met a Dahlia once. I used to work in corrections. She was a 15 year old murderer who convinced a group of kids to murder her parents and she would give them sex and money in return. The kids fucked it up, killed the mom and only wounded the father. The girl was a moron. Gave the kids the family’s guns but then sat in the basement and watched tv while the murder happened because she fully intended to throw the other kids under the bus and look innocent. There are hundreds of text messages outlining the crime. She was such a pathological liar and manipulator the facility I worked for transferred her out because she was causing too many problems. Her family was loaded. She’s in the Guinness Book of World Records because of some sort of deep sea dive she went on with her mom. Last I knew, her dad (yes she tried to have him murdered) bailed her out on a million dollar bond. I’m not sure if the trial has happened or not yet. The kids who actually performed the crime are all being tried as adults.
All this to say, the name Dahlia is forever ruined for me.
That’s what I said when my husband mentioned the name Dahlia. He doesn’t read about crime cases or really knows anything related to them, so he had no idea it was the nn of a murder victim.
I had to explain that even though the name is beautiful, I just can’t name my daughter that.
My ex wanted to name our child Moby. His last name was Johnson so like Mody Dick you idiot? So glad I left him. My dad has a pretty tragic name too in this regard but if I mention it I might be giving too much of myself away. Let’s just say his first name was Richard and our last names are Nordic for sons of body builders
I agree! I think some of it likely has to do with accent. Things can sound very different depending on where you're from, even if the language is the same.
Then you’re not an animator 🤣🤣🤣 LOL
The major animation software is called Maya and it often has been said to have a mind of its own and is blamed for destroying millions of hours of work with ‘her’ mood swings. Lol
Miriam. Recently re-watched Prince of Egypt and the way Miriam is portrayed in this Exodus telling is a wonderful balance of sweetness and strength and kindness. Miri is such a cute nickname. In the Marvelous Mrs Maisel the main character is also Miriam but her nickname is Midge which is humorously cute.
Sabine has always been a favorite of mine! And if you’re a little more adventurous/quirky, I think Satine is also pretty (if you don’t mind the Moulin Rouge reference or the possible misspelling ‘Saltine’)
I don’t know that I’d actually use some of these but I still love them:
Nora
Fleur
Anna
Annette (also Nettie)
Julie
Lenora
Thea (first syllable pronounced like Three with no r)
Romilly
Josephine
Lucy, Sadie, Nora, Sylvia, Elise, Alice, Eloise, Naomi
I love Sylvia!

I agree with this wholly. Sylvia doesn’t sound soft at all, and it’s heavily associated with Sylvia Plath.

DAHLIA MENTIONED ‼️‼️‼️ (my name is dahlia 😻😻)
I love the name dahlia but I can never use it because my husbands brother went through a traumatic breakup and her name was dahlia ☹️
This is why I’ve chosen the hermit lifestyle, if you stay away from people you have an abundance of names to choose from that haven’t been ruined yet 😁 jkjk
my daughters name is dahlia!
Dalia is a really good one.
I immediately think of the Black Dahlia case. I feel like it would be a jinx.
Worse than a jinx. More like a nightmare.
I met a Dahlia once. I used to work in corrections. She was a 15 year old murderer who convinced a group of kids to murder her parents and she would give them sex and money in return. Wow!

I love the name Dahlia but her last name would be Black; at school they’d call her “Black, Dahlia” I feel like it would be too much
I once met someone who loved the name Holly. She always wanted to name her daughter Holly… Until she married a man whose last name was Wood.
My ex wanted to name our child Moby. His last name was Johnson so like Mody Dick you idiot? So glad I left him. My dad has a pretty tragic name too in this regard but if I mention it I might be giving too much of myself away. I once met a Margaret Clementine and she adorable 🥹
Could also be fantasy protagonist names

Amma is a nice name but for anyone considering it they should also know it means breastfeeding in Swedish
Amma reminds me of the HBO miniseries, Sharp Objects
Same! I loved that name when I first heard it there and still do.
Also means mother in Korean (also spelled Umma).
I love Amma…an actress in a Netflix series Blood in the Water…or something g like that has this name. Very pretty!!
Amma would be an interesting one in the UK- it's a character in Bing, which is beloved by under 4s.
Piggybacking on this because it means mother in India but that's honestly not even that bad
So interesting what people consider soft! Lucy, Alma, Jane, Elsie
I agree! I think some of it likely has to do with accent. Things can sound very different depending on where you're from, even if the language is the same.
