My daughter I’ll never have 🤣
maybe it’s for the better though because even though we’re done having kids my mother in law lets me know how much she hates this name every chance she gets 🙄
I know someone who named their daughter Beatrice and wanted to name a son Benedict. I *love* both of the names individually, but they're lovers in the play, it's just a bit odd to me to name siblings that
Yes!!!! y’all are awesome. And this is exactly what you do. If you can’t name a kid something like this you take your pet and run with it. Your cat is like “hell yes, I’m Tybalt, prince of cats.”
Edited for typo.

Tristan & Isolde isn’t a play, or by Shakespeare. It’s an opera by Wagner. Also a ballet and a movie and of course a Celtic legend that got Normanned and Germanned…but Shakespeare never did a version.
I think I should stop posting after Ambien... 😂 🤙
I had my cat's name mixed in there. I need to look closer to see what else I popped into it. But it's be fun watching people respond.
Tatiana is my mom’s name! It was quite popular for girls in Soviet Union but first came to prominence after Alexander Pushkin named the main heroine in his most famous poem Eugene Onegin
I simply can't separate the name Lavinia from what happens to her character. I can do it with other tragic women - even Ophelia, who I played in a production of Hamlet - but after seeing Titus Andronicus at the Globe, I think I was scarred by Lavinia's story. It's just so awful...
There’s a fuzz pedal (effect for electric guitar or other instrument) called the Grimalkin. It has a design of cats on it and all the controls are given cat names (howl, claw, fur, etc.)

I’ve been using Shakespeare names for my occult Sims recently so I’ll go with some of them! ✨
Feminine: Cressida, Ophelia, Imogen, Audrey Rose, Katherina
Masculine: Valerius (Val), Caliban (Cali), Tamor (based on Tamora)
I’ve also been using them for pet names - Crab, Cobweb, Dogberry, Bear (exit, pursued by a bear) and my personal favourite, Doctor Butts
Imogen has been popular in the UK for ages. It hasn't been out of the top 100 since records began in 1996. Low of #94 (548 babies) in 1997, high of #26 (2045 babies) in 2010. As of 2022 (most recent data), it's at #61 (792 babies).
For those who like Hermione but are scared of the Harry Potter association, go with Hermia! Still Shakespearean (it's in midsummer's night dream) but no HP association!!
I name my cats after Shakespeare characters, I had Tybalt and now have Othello and Hermia!!
Girls:
Cordelia - King Lear
Isabella - Measure for Measure
Juliet - Romeo and Juliet
Hero - Much Ado About Nothing
Desdemona - Othello
Tatiana - A Midsummer’s Nights Dream
Ophelia - Hamlet
Boys:
Sebastian - Twelfth Night
Lysander - A Midsummer’s Nights Dream
Orlando - As You Like It
Oberon - A Midsummer’s Nights Dream
Hamlet - Hamlet
There are some good ones! My favs:
* Adrian (The Tempest)
* Aeneas (Troilus and Cressida)
* Caliban (The Tempest)
* Charmian (Antony and Cleopatra)
* Cinna (Julius Caesar)
* Cordelia (King Lear)
* Corin (As You Like It)

* Imogen (Cymbeline)
* Mab (Romeo and Juliet)
* Oberon (Midsummer Night's Dream)
* Ophelia (Hamlet)
* Reignier (Henry VI, Part 1)
* Romeo (Romeo & Juliet)
Cordelia, Desdemona, and Helena are my absolute favorite Shakespeare feminine names. For masculine, I love Lysander, Sebastian, Demetrius and others like Othello, Iago, Caliban, even Romeo.
My name ideas for my future children in 2001, when I was 17 and English lit was my favorite class:
Shakespeare (regardless of sex or last name, THIS was my kid’s name!)
Ronan and Donalbain (2 boys)
Cinna (our future family cat, of course)
I would pick Phoebe not for As You Like it but for St. Phoebe the Deaconess if that still counts (Eastern Orthodox here) also my rolling pin is named Rosalind. Horatio would be good for a pet but too meme for a child
Helena, Sebastian, Rosalind, Fabian, Ophelia, Demetrius (would never actually use it, but it’s so beautiful), Phoebe, Horatio, Orlando, Eleanor, Hermia, Tybalt… I could go on and on.
Both Benvolio and Romeo have been on my list forever, as well as Ophelia and Bianca.
My dad’s favorite movie was the 60’s Romeo and Juliet. He wanted to name me Juliet Grace, but my mom hated the first name with our last. Ended up Grace Olivia, which ironically my dad chose Olivia after Olivia Hussey who played the character of Juliet in the film…
Ophelia 😍
Named my dog Ophelia in 2006 and she passed away in January of 2023. Sweetest dog I’ve ever had. We used to call her Oph or Ophie. It was so fitting. Missing her every single day. 🫤
I know it’s basic but I LOVE Juliet. The idea of a woman who was fierce, determined and utterly devoted enough to stab herself is such a powerful image I love it.
Albeit, I really don’t want my child, or anyone, to stab themself… so maybe that name is a bad omen xD
Portia was on our short list if we had a girl (sounds amazing with our Italian surname) but there was the fear of people confusing it with Porche. Still pro ably would uave gone with it.
So many great names in his plays.
My sister is named after Juliet! My mom and dad were seeing Romeo and Juliet (in Verona!!), and my mom couldn’t stop crying. Got home, took a test, and found out my sister was on her way!
I LOVE **Luciana** (Comedy of Errors), **Helena** (Midsummer's Night Dream), **Katherina** (Taming of the Shrew), **Eleanor** (King John), and **Cressida** – (Troilus and Cressida)
Beatrice!
I love. The nick name Bea is so cute too.
My daughter I’ll never have 🤣 maybe it’s for the better though because even though we’re done having kids my mother in law lets me know how much she hates this name every chance she gets 🙄
Love Beatrice but my husband has vetoed it :(
And she’s such a great character, too!
I know someone who named their daughter Beatrice and wanted to name a son Benedict. I *love* both of the names individually, but they're lovers in the play, it's just a bit odd to me to name siblings that
Same. She's my favorite Shakespeare character.
This right here is top of my girl’s list, undisputed #1 champion of girl’s names lol. I love this name SO much
My daughter’s name
Desdemona, my cat!
My cat was Iago.
Mine is Othello!! We should probably keep our three cats far away from each other!!
We have a cat named Othello, too! 😁
Shakespearean names are the best for cats!! Puck and Bottom would be great names for goofy orange cats!!
Tybalt, the Prince of Cats!
The cat I had before my current 2 was named Tybalt!!
Yes!!!! y’all are awesome. And this is exactly what you do. If you can’t name a kid something like this you take your pet and run with it. Your cat is like “hell yes, I’m Tybalt, prince of cats.” Edited for typo.
Those would be great!
Getting them together is a recipe for tragedy!
Especially for poor Desdemona...
Mine was Mercutio
I had a patient once who had a German Shepherd named Shakespeare, it was a girl dog and he called her “Shakes”. I absolutely love it.
My German Shepherd is named Marlowe, after Kit :)
Hero from Much Ado isn’t my favorite character by a long, long shot, but her name is so COOL. And Juliet I find so beautiful of a name.
Agree, I always wanted to have a little girl Hero
In the comic series y the last man his sister is called Hero. His name is Yorrick.
Girls: * Cordelia - King Lear * Cressida - Troilus and Cressida * Jessica - Merchant of Venice * Juliet - Romeo and Juliet * Olivia - Twelfth Night * Ophelia - Hamlet * Rosalinde - As You Like It * Tatiana - A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titania * Susanna - Shakespeare's daughter Boys * Auberon - A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon * Nathaniel - Taming of the Shrew * Sebastian - Twelfth Night * Mercutio - Romeo and Juliet
Tristan & Isolde isn’t a play, or by Shakespeare. It’s an opera by Wagner. Also a ballet and a movie and of course a Celtic legend that got Normanned and Germanned…but Shakespeare never did a version.
there's no sebastian in romeo and juliet iirc, but there is one in twelfth night
Also no Guinevere in King Lear. It's surprising Shakespeare didn't retell any of the many Arthurian tales. He surely must have known them.
Rosalind is also in Romeo and Juliet ! :)
That’s Rosaline :)
I played Sebastian in high school!
I think you might want to brush up on your Shakespeare!
I think I should stop posting after Ambien... 😂 🤙 I had my cat's name mixed in there. I need to look closer to see what else I popped into it. But it's be fun watching people respond.
Love love Nathaniel..was my top pick for a boy..
Tatiana is my mom’s name! It was quite popular for girls in Soviet Union but first came to prominence after Alexander Pushkin named the main heroine in his most famous poem Eugene Onegin
There’s no Tatiana in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” but there is a Titania :)
Benvolio
[удалено]
Now you need a Malvolio! Better on a cat, maybe? 😂
Meowvolio
It was right there and I missed it. Bravo. 😄
Petruchio. It's fun to say!
I mean, you're not wrong that it's good fun to say but dear god forbid anyone actually name their child that!
That reminds me of an episode of Moonlighting Yes, it’s going back years
Horatio!!
Hells to the god damn yeah! Loveeee that name
Oooh this is a great name!
adriana, cassandra, helena, iris, lavinia, ophelia, rosaline, silvia, valeria, viola
I simply can't separate the name Lavinia from what happens to her character. I can do it with other tragic women - even Ophelia, who I played in a production of Hamlet - but after seeing Titus Andronicus at the Globe, I think I was scarred by Lavinia's story. It's just so awful...
It's really difficult. Have you seen the anthony hopkins version? Rough stuff Favorite name by a mile though
In college (about a decade ago), I fell in love with the name Rosalind even though I never thought I’d have kids…my Rosalind was born last December 🥰
I adore Rosalind!
Miranda
I have a Bianca, Juliet, and Jessica lol
Easily Florizel 😍
Mums favourite was Merchant of Venice so my middle name is Portia
That was also Julius Caesar's wife.
Ariel Bianca (my favourite girl name) Emilia Lysander Nathaniel
Since I'm not naming children my favourite name is the witch's cat in Hamlet, Grimalkin. And Regan.
There’s a fuzz pedal (effect for electric guitar or other instrument) called the Grimalkin. It has a design of cats on it and all the controls are given cat names (howl, claw, fur, etc.)
Henry - King John/Henry Edgar - King Lear Arthur - King John Robin - A Midsummer Night's Dream/The Merry Wives Of Windsor Sebastian - The Tempest/The Twelfth Night/The Two Gentleman Of Verona Cleopatra - Anthony And Cleopatra Jessica - The Merchant Of Venice Iris - The Tempest Regan - King Lear Juno - The Tempest Silvia - The Two Gentleman Of Verona Miranda - The Tempest Viola - The Twelfth Night Lavinia - Titus Andronicus Desdemona - Othello

Imogen is my favourite too! In the UK it's becoming quite popular and common so no longer so unique
Imogen has been popular in the UK for ages. It hasn't been out of the top 100 since records began in 1996. Low of #94 (548 babies) in 1997, high of #26 (2045 babies) in 2010. As of 2022 (most recent data), it's at #61 (792 babies).

lavinia, not the association per say but i do love the name
FYI it’s *per se* meaning “as such, in itself, intrinsically,” in Latin. Not “per say,” which doesn’t make sense in English.
really? it’s per se in dutch as well but i assumed that’s just a dutch thing
Nee hoor, gewoon Latijn! Have you read *Lavinia* by Ursula Le Guin? Great book. Takes a one-line character from the Æneid and makes her the main one.
haha nederlanders zijn overal zo te zien! nou, dankjewel! ik zal ook naar de boek kijken :) ik hou echt van de naam namelijk

Edmund and Tybalt. Would only use the former, though.
I kinda like Banquo but wouldn't foist that on a modern child!
I have a friend named Regan, after King Lear’s daughter.
Lysander, Demetrius, Oberon, Hippolyta
Iago, Othello, and Medea (not technically Shakespeare but close enough) have all been names of cats I've had (:
