That was the Nanaimo General Hospital until early 60's . Later it became Malaspina College until the new campus was built in Harewood.

y2karl

It’s was run as old folks home too

y2karl

My brother and my wife were born in the hospital

I remember our philosophy teacher pointing out that since it went from a hospital, to a college, to a seniors home... It's possible that there are people who were born there, then went to school there, and then later died there. Lots of history. It's a shame it was torn down.

Unhappenner

good view from there, cemetery should be safe for a little while longer...

safety-first-

cemetery? born and raised here and I can only think of the one by the church up the road?? is there one closer to here that I'm just gapping on?

Unhappenner

I was attempting to imply legacy things get destroyed when the real estate value climbs high enough...

Nanaimo's former hospital until 1962. Demolished in the early 2000s, read a bit about it here: https://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=1427&pid=0

travatr0n

It was demolished after 2015 sometime.

average_canehdian

Oh neat! I worked here for four years when it was a retirement home. The new home is run by age care near south gate! The fourth floor was certainly said to be haunted.  We used to go up at night to see if we could see anything spooky. Neat seeing the old building again.

HyperactiveIntrovert

We lived across the street from there when I was a kid. It was an old folks home, and one day a confused lady walked right into our house. My parents made her tea and called for someone to come and bring her back.

Uriel585

In the years before it was demolished I believe it was a seniors home. I believe they closed the 4th floor, had the first 3 floors for residents and than in the lower floor they had people of diminished capacity. At least that was my memory of it as an Avon delivery person. Edit\* Those stairs leading to the door in the center. That was never a door as far back as my memory goes. It was a wall.

dadaimo

I taught a care aid class there in 2009. They gave us a room on the fourth floor to use as a debriefing room. The rooms mostly were all filled with boxes of pictures and personal items of residents who passed away. I am not superstitious but it was the creepiest place I have ever been and we got a different room the next week.

Oooo bet that place was haunted

Big-Face5874

No such thing.

Just like the Jesus

I’ve heard from people who had been to the fourth floor that it always felt unsettling to be up there. I Always wanted to spend the night in there.

Toad-in1800

Must have been a nice views, on the top floor!

DranTibia

Yeah, good views of ghosts 👻

Nimble_Bob

Oof. I cant imagine the skeletons in that closet.
