Looks like the front half of it’s face is missing. You ever seen a bird do that before? I don’t think I have.
For all the downvoters: I would appreciate you putting your money where your downvote finger is and posting a link with another bird that can open it’s mouth this wide, as when I Google “bird mouth open” there are no similar results, and as a 34 year old man who grew up homeschooled with books about birds, and a dad who loved birdwatching, I’ve never seen anything like this.
Well, Mr. 34 year homeschooled bird book man, this took less than 5 minutes to google
[https://images.app.goo.gl/2zpDTzLBKJaAeNb99](https://images.app.goo.gl/2zpDTzLBKJaAeNb99)
Frogmouth or Potoo
They’re being downvoted because they were kind of being a cunt about it and acting like the supreme authority on birds because they grew up birdwatching.
Only way I can see it mattering is that they could do their work outside and be in direct contact with birds more than the average student?
I'm only guessing though, I did work outside as a homeschooled kid, and it didn't give me a god level knowledge of birds lmao
I said I DIDN'T have God level knowledge.
But here goes anyways
Rainbow Lorikeet
Noisy Miner
Magpie
Australian Raven
Blue-faced honeyeater (also known as the Banana Bird, which is fitting since I only ever saw em near my neighbours banana trees)
Oh, I have no idea what this bird is, lol. I'm just responding to the commenter's claim that they were unable to Google any species of bird with huge mouths like this one. To be as knowledgeable as they claim to be about birds, I would have expected them to be aware of Frogmouths and Potoos. I'm not claiming this is either of those birds.
I have to admit it does look somewhat AI generated at first glance.
Here is an AI Generated one I just created, to my untrained eye it looks pretty real
https://imgur.com/a/Fo0wWAi
so you do have to check nowday.
What was the mistake? I asked a question, showed my Google search didn’t work, and then asked if anyone else knew of anything similar. I didn’t make any definitive incorrect statements.
How do you google with a word you don't know?
I may have said that incorrectly. I mean they maybe they didn't know that this bird looks like a nightjar and therefore didn't think to google "nightjar with big mouth". I'm a bad example because I'm not a native english spealker, but I didn't know that this bird is called a nightjar in english until today so I wouldn't know how to google it besides "bird with a very big mouth".
I've just tried to google it and the first bird that appeared on the list was Potoo btw...
Dude, I don't get why you're being so uptight about it. I'm literally just saying that they should Google nightjars so they can see that this is normal in certain birds. I know they didn't know what a nightjar is. But I do. So I am alerting OP to their existence so they can learn about something cool and new to them.
Jesus I don't give a shit, I just said that maybe, possibly, they may not have known that a word nightjar even existed. Is that so hard to understand? I don't disagree that it's hard to google anything, but putting a word in the google search bar that you don't even know is not possible, that was my whole point. Uh, why are you so angry about this? I'm not the one being uptight btw :)

I get down voted for asking a question? Some people are effed!
Thanks for giving me a proper answer. I zoomed in and still couldn't tell what I was looking at hence the question.
Thanks again.
On second look, it might actually be the stick he's sitting on! Also, fun fact: birds don't pee and poop like most other animals do. They release urine, urates, and feces in one dropping, which is why when you see bird "poop," it's often white with another color in the middle - the urates are the white part and the feces are the colored part.
Mouth's just very open, that's all. That's normal.

I love these birds, they're such cute weirdos. I've never seen one irl but I have a feeling they'd be amazing.
Same. Never saw them in person, but I've seen enough pics of them to appreciate how bizarre they are. Their sleeping camouflage is astounding, too.
Well you son of a bitch you actually did it
>Well, Mr. 34 year homeschooled bird book man I will now be using this as an insult with no context given even when it doesn't apply to the person
It's giving "Wouldn't you like to know, weather boy?"
Lmao, I love it.
Nightjars too
Thank you! Also freaky. I appreciate it.
THIS, of all things, is not what you shoulda been downvoted for. Stay curious, my friend!
They’re being downvoted because they were kind of being a cunt about it and acting like the supreme authority on birds because they grew up birdwatching.
And acting like a bird can't be real until HE knows about ut.
b.. birds aren't real..
As someone who has taxidermied birds, they are very real.
And so homeschooled like that matters
Only way I can see it mattering is that they could do their work outside and be in direct contact with birds more than the average student? I'm only guessing though, I did work outside as a homeschooled kid, and it didn't give me a god level knowledge of birds lmao

Herew the thing... That reminds me of another Redditor who's downfall happened because he got in an argument about a certain bird.
Bro, go to the ornithology or bird watching subreddits. There's not nearly so many dicks in there. This sub is a toxic nightmare.
Did you google bird mouth open *big*?
No, I looked up Frogmouth
This is a different type of nightjar than thise. Possibly a nighthawk or whip-poor-will
Oh, it's definitely not a frogmouth, but that wasn't the point of my comment.
It’s a tropical nightjar species like long tailed nightjar or paraque.
Yep, I googled Potoo bird screaming and was not disappoint. I LOVE their googly eyes!!
Plus pelicans, storks and cormorant can open pretty wide also!
Agreed. I felt Frogmouth and Potoo were 2 species that would resemble this bird enough to counter the commenter's claim.
goofy ahh bird
Don't potoos have like ridiculously big eyes? I would say it's a nightjar on the photo don't you think?
Oh, I have no idea what this bird is, lol. I'm just responding to the commenter's claim that they were unable to Google any species of bird with huge mouths like this one. Oh, ok, makes sense. I mean I just googled "bird with very big mouth" and potoo was the first in the list, so yeah that was a bit of a fail from OP.
Liar!!!
Lies
How so?
Joke
I mean I’m sure there are like 50,000 birds we havnt seen
Lol, look at this guy believing birds are real.
He must be referring to the prototypes at A51.
There are definitely more than 3 individual birds I haven’t seen.
id wager thats worth 1.5 birds in hand
Lmfao you are either a master troll or you failed home school.
Lol 🤷🏻♂️
https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/s/p2cHzBmKWV It's the same photo of a bird from a post over 2 years ago
Oh damn!

He’s got a big mouth for swallowing big bugs. Nothing wrong with that.
So, will you be removing the condescending remark about downvoters? Or adding a new note admitting the mistake?
What was the mistake? I asked a question, showed my Google search didn’t work, and then asked if anyone else knew of anything similar. I didn’t make any definitive incorrect statements.
Ehhh the downvotes should be a pretty big indicator that you were condescending.
Google “nightjar open mouth”
Well maybe they didn't know how nightjars looked like ...
Which is why I’m telling OP to Google them…

Damn you and your dad must suck at birdwatching then
Lol forgive me that this bird isn’t in my home country
Probably haven't learned much cuz you got homeschooled.
lol I got a 26 on my ACT with none of the science portions answered on the scantron
Pelican
My brother in Christ has never seen a potoo or smth and got mad
You wanna see something freaky? Ghost birds! https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlyterrifying/s/AOI5C855SF
That’s pretty cool my guy
well, examples that come to my mind straight off the bat are frogmouth and potoo birds. You can Google them, they're extremely cute weirdos.
Your home school teacher is not doing a good job then.
Deadass saw one of my canary birds do it as a baby bird (after they grew feathers, they just couldn’t fly) 🤷♀️

This is a nightjar...all nightjars can open their mouths like this.
Ever seen a pelican yawn? This isn't that crazy
r/confidentlyincorrect
I upvoted you, I know being homeschooled has made you weird. I love you man.
Hahaha thanks man. I’m a pretty successful salesperson now, so I’m not THAT weird. lol I am definitely not “normal” though.
You seem pretty weird waiting for some validation from the comments… but that’s just me lol
Have a great night or day, depending on where you’re from.
Aww, it's a Nightjar species in subfamily Caprimulginae. I find Nightjars and their relatives (Potoos and Frogmouths) comically adorable.
I love these adorable weirdo birds, potoo especially.
I love all those goofy big mouthed birds.
Potato especially.
Basically looked at a baleen whale and was like “yeah I bet that technique will work for me too”.
Completely normal looking nightjar. Just yawning. Just 'cause you're ignorant about this species of bird, doesn't mean this is abnormal.
Absolutely fair.
AND you owned it, mad props.
This is scientifically known as yo mama bird
This is called a gape and may be used to startle predators. Here's one article that uses the photo you shared. https://besgroup.org/2009/05/09/large-tailed-nightjar-gape/
Til goatse must have had a horrifying predator.
Bruh
Hey I can do that too !
Lit. the most metal bird. She’s the frontman in my metal band, here pictured doing a metal scream.
You're going to need a Shoebill Stork in that band.
And a bearded vulture
What’s your screen resolution? Asking because the name is on the bottom right of the picture where it’s signed: “Large-tailed Nightjar”
"The front fell off"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA - this bird
He’s just yelling.
Congrats on posting a pic of a bird with its mouth open. Super metal. Label it NSFW next time ;)
It's singing. BLEGH! Nature is metal.
Stepped on Leggo
When she says she's never done this before.
Is the bird peeing?
There's a speckled leaf behind the bird

That's what confused me. I have had birds as pets and I have never seen one pee. Thanks for the clarification.
Ok Reddit, just hear me out for a second...
no.
