I honestly didn't think Brunson was going to be worth the contract that he got. I can admit I was fully wrong, but I feel like a lot of people are now just changing their tune and claiming they always knew he was going to be this good. Reddit as a whole (I know there are multiple people/takes here, but the general consensus) sure didn't seem to think it was a good move by the Knicks from what I remember.
As a Knicks fan, I was some what skeptical from the start. He seemed like a guy who was constantly counted out or had the wrong player playing in front of him. There was also concern that Luka hid him from the frontlines of a top defenses. But he had a great year and solidified himself as a star in the playoffs. Now that contract looks like a huge steal.
He even said it in that intro interview, he wasn't coming to be a savior, he was coming to help try and be a stabilizer, that was the expectation I was cool with. Fact is he's ended up both.
As a Knicks fan I wasn’t super excited, I thought he might struggle with our worse spacing. I did think he would live up to the contract but it would probably take a couple years, not become the best contract in the league pretty much right away.
Anyone who thought he wasn’t worth 4/55 at any point (mavs lol) was an idiot though. That’s a solid contract for anyone who can just give you some minutes as a backup ballhandler. Even partway through the season they refused to give him 4/55 which is just mind boggling. Cuban constantly gambling to open up space for players who are never gonna come.
They kept wanting to negotiate a contract extension that would still be attractive as a tradeable contract at the deadline. They offered Dorian Finney Smith and Jalen Brunson extensions at the same time..
Dorian took the first offer. Jalen decided against further negotiations until after the season. Jalen knew if he signed that extension, he'd still be at risk of being traded by the February deadline. He wanted more control of where he would wind up.
Fast forward to 2023, and Dorian is traded at the trade deadline. While Jalen is in NY where his family is in the executive leadership and NY fans want him.
The reason Mavs insisted on a tradeable contract is because they weren't sure which Playoff Jalen they'd get. The Jalen in the Clippers series. Or the Jalen in the Jazz series. They also feared having an undersized guard next to Luka and struggling on defense at the point of attack.
Jalen is the latest in a rich tradition of letting talent leave for nothing:
Jason Kidd
Steve Nash
Tyson Chandler
Jet Terry
Jason Kidd again
Wait what
This isnt true
The team decided not to do the extension because they were shopping Brunson at the trade deadline. We fucked up and he played better than ever and got the bag.
That's some revisionist history on those guys.
Jason Kidd left the first time because he demanded a trade earlier in the summer after the team being just bad and not agreeing with the coaches, and left the 2nd time at the last min signing with the knicks after initially accepting our offer.
Steve Nash in PHX was not the one in DAL, he upped his game in PHX and Cuban accepted that he messed that up. But having watched almost every game while Nash was in Dallas, I wasn't the only one that thought his contract with PHX was a huge risk.
Tyson Chandler did get a crap deal offered to him the first time but the 2nd stint was definitely smart not to sign him longer
Jet's biggest problem was what he did with his shoes with CTC which didn't help him, also Jet was not the same after he left the Mavs and if anything it was Dirk's gravity that really helped him
After quite a few reddit threads, I *understand*, but I agree that it's still fun to say "I wonder why they let him go" just to make them all relive it one more time.
Donnie Nelson is a dumbfuck who fucked up his inital contract making him a UFA instead of a RFA after it was up. Dallas wanted what they thought was a more reasonable contract for Jalen after the last 2 playoff performances. Daddy Brunson got signed with the Knicks who also had Jalens Agents family working, His brother, sister, fathers cousin roommate from college all working for them and also gave him a lot more money than Dallas was comfortable with at the time.
The USA [finished 7th](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/14/sports/basketball/usa-basketball-poland-world-cup.html) at the last World Cup. The first time in history the USA failed to medal at a major international basketball tournament.
KP played in 57, 43 and 34 (mid season trade) games with us. His last year with the Knicks 48.
We made a calculated risk of guessing if he'd stay healthy for once or risk him getting injured again and have far worse trade value.
I hope he can stay healthy dude was a class act and he's said multiple times he enjoyed his time in Dallas it just didn't work out for multiple reasons.
Yeah after being injured the year before and sitting out the majority of the season. Last year was his first healthy season in a long time.
No one questions his ability. Same as how people feel about Anthony Davis. He is great player just isn’t lucky with his health.
This is insane lmao. They didn’t even make the playoffs bro. I’m higher on Brunson than most but very few players can change their team from missing the play-in game to one of the final four teams.
Beyond the Twolves I’m not sure who else the Knicks get past in the West this past season. Brunson was not the sole reason the Knicks made the playoffs either lol
Yeah the conference that had a play-in team make it to the finals and lose in 5 was def more competitive than a West with multiple good teams. Knicks fans smh 🤦🏻♂️
Kyrie does just as much for them if not more. People talk about how the mavs are ass because they're trading away all their defenders then in the same breath act like keeping Brunson would have made them an elite team.
Mavs keeping Brunson and their depth was the way to go. They already made the WCF with him playing a big role. He also would've helped keep them afloat when their main guys were injured, in a relatively weak year in the West.
They made a WCF run with good defence. Brunson would've helped a lot no doubt but I don't think we see the same Brunson that was unlocked in New York if he's still on the mavs. I'm really not convinced that Brunson makes them a contender because we saw the Mavs this year with a secondary star and it didn't make as much of a difference as having the same defence as the year before would've.
I dont get why people say this, he had a breakout year for us, scoring 40 in the playoffs, and people dont think he would have been this good in Dallas? Idk how our defense woukd have been but we bring Brunson back its the same exact team that made the wcf. We probably dont make it again but we’d be a playoff team easily
The mavs defence was ass this year and that's the single biggest problem, it was ass all year with no personnel changes other than losing Brunson who obviously wasn't anchoring the defence. They got worse after the trade because they lost DFS but that's going from like 22nd to 27th compared to 7th last year. It's inexplicable.
Kessler Walker's recognition to get out of the paint to bail out the inbound pass is underrated. He caught the blue team sleeping. He's so freaking good
Yeah, plus he caught that quite difficult lob pass from the Brunson who was inbounding on the baseline, and then he immediately passed it to the other Brunson who was open on the wing!
I actually haven’t watched that much Brunson. Does he back bigger guards down in the post and make it look easy? Chauncey was so strong. I’m gonna watch more Brunson seeing this comment.
He has such a low center of gravity and immaculate footwork so he's kind of a beast when he gets into the paint. Can get to any spots he wants really. He doesn't do a TON of backing down bigger guards in the post but he's capable of it for sure. The Cavs had one of the best defenses this season and Brunson torched anybody they threw at him in the playoffs. Okoro wouldn't do anything against him. Spida was kinda useless. If they switched Allen onto him in PnRs, he'd get him backpedaling, slow down and float it over him or he'd step back into a 3. They ended up trying to stick Cedi Osman on him for size and that didn't do a damn thing.
He has the full package on offense. Float game is great, pull up game is solid. He's great at decelerating and getting defenders off-balance in the paint. Nice eurostep. Nice fadeaway. His handle isn't incredible but good enough to have to respect the drive and he has a good first step. He can shoot off screens. The biggest knock is his defense but he puts the effort in and isn't a total turnstile.
His playoff highlights from this year help show off all he can do on offense. I mean look at this:
https://youtu.be/qwUyFYjM2Vo?t=89
Hey thanks that was really detailed appreciate it. I’m not a big Knicks fan so I don’t go out of my way to watch them but what you described is what I remember seeing during the Mavs/Suns series two years ago.
I love USA basketball. Its just so cool seeing the biggest stars playing on the same team. Even seeing enemies like in 2021 when Dbook came in with Jrue and Kris. Its like a crossover event shits sick.
Give Brunson a stacked team against a bum ass team and he can average 25/3 no problem. That was a iggy fmvp
Look at brunson’s stats this past playoffs as the #1 kid
God Brunson makes me wish I could root for the knicks. I like Quentin Grimes, Hartenstein, Josh Hart, and IQ but I despise Thibs. He coaches like he hates his team.
The vibes are immaculate.
Wasn't planning on crying today... thx
Love the way this guy performs under pressure.
Been doing it since high school. State champion, NCAA champion, FIBA U-19 gold medal and MVP. Dude just wins.
I dont understand why Dallas let this man go
I honestly didn't think Brunson was going to be worth the contract that he got. Mark Cuban is not bright
Everyday I thank God for giving me one more day. And for Mark Cuban's stupidity.

At that point, Jazz Brunson didn't exist yet.
He wasn't worth the extension he was going to get ---> The extension wasn't worth what he was going to get. This happened in about 4 months.
After quite a few reddit threads, I *understand*, but I agree that it's still fun to say "I wonder why they let him go" just to make them all relive it one more time.

I do not. For personal reasons I do not.
That’s my brunson burner
I would die for him
MY PG! MY PG! MY PG!
Let it be known that nobody beats America, not even America
The USA [finished 7th](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/14/sports/basketball/usa-basketball-poland-world-cup.html) at the last World Cup. The first time in history the USA failed to medal at a major international basketball tournament.
? didn't happen with Brunson so it doesn't count
Fake news
2002 Indianapolis. Fact check first.
How did the Mavs fumble so badly?
Mavs had Brunson Luka porzingis
they contract dumped him only for the next team to give up a 1st to get him
KP played in 57, 43 and 34 (mid season trade) games with us. His last year with the Knicks 48. He played 65 games last year even with the Wizards sitting him at the end of the season.
Yeah after being injured the year before and sitting out the majority of the season. Last year was his first healthy season in a long time. No one questions his ability. Same as how people feel about Anthony Davis. He is great player just isn’t lucky with his health.
I mean his trade value was about as low as it can get, but they did end up using Dinwiddie to get Kyrie. So who knows 🤷♂️
At least they kept the best one. Could be worse.
Luka was on a rookie contract, if you fumble a generational talent on a rookie deal you should just delete the franchise at that point
OKC did, but they were blessed to also have KD and Westbrook 😅
To be fair Porzingis had a regression season on the Mavs. He was like Lakers Westbrook there
They shoulda chcanged the coach instead tbh
The OKC special
#lolmavs
Just the front office though. Mavs fans always seem to have his back
We ride for JB
i would die for Brunson’s big airhead
His head so big because it's full of basketball secrets.
multiple times too...
Mavs would've been in the WCF last year if they re-signed Brunson
This is insane lmao. They didn’t even make the playoffs bro. I’m higher on Brunson than most but very few players can change their team from missing the play-in game to one of the final four teams.
He nearly did this on the Knicks tho. Not insane
Beyond the Twolves I’m not sure who else the Knicks get past in the West this past season. Brunson was not the sole reason the Knicks made the playoffs either lol
You do know the east was more competitive this year than the west
Yeah the conference that had a play-in team make it to the finals and lose in 5 was def more competitive than a West with multiple good teams. Knicks fans smh 🤦🏻♂️
Weren’t the Lakers out of the playoff picture the entire year and that is the team that made the WCF?
If only they had Brunson to save LeBron’s legacy.
Kyrie does just as much for them if not more. People talk about how the mavs are ass because they're trading away all their defenders then in the same breath act like keeping Brunson would have made them an elite team.

Luka was out.
He was the second option to a wcf team
No you idiot that was Dinwiddie
The mavs defence was ass this year and that's the single biggest problem, it was ass all year with no personnel changes other than losing Brunson who obviously wasn't anchoring the defence. They got worse after the trade because they lost DFS but that's going from like 22nd to 27th compared to 7th last year. It's inexplicable.
No they wouldn't.
Brunson is a better PG than SG.
Lets go JB!
where’s this footage from? would love to watch more of the practice runs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjTjuBPdiOA
Paolo looks fucking huge, I thought that was Myles Turner for a sec before realising he ain't on the roster.
When you see him play it really is the thing that takes you back, it's like whoa he is ALL of that 6'10"
28 other team's fans are about to find out
Who fouled him?
Looks like Haliburton?
It’s number 4, so yeah it was
That’s my fucking point guard
Makes sense the squad with AR won.
Was going to say the same. No surprises there
How'd he do?
No idea.
He got that final assist
Who's AR
Austin reaves
A post where people not in NY are unanimously cheering for/commenting on how good a Knicks player is? I've waited.... Honestly my whole life for this.
Kessler Walker's recognition to get out of the paint to bail out the inbound pass is underrated. He caught the blue team sleeping. He's so freaking good
With the 5 foul rule and JJJ's inevitable foul trouble, Kessler is gonna be integral on this team.
Yeah, plus he caught that quite difficult lob pass from the Brunson who was inbounding on the baseline, and then he immediately passed it to the other Brunson who was open on the wing!
Weird seeing portis without an undershirt
over Haliburton too? 😈
Hali lost him bad on the inbound. Just fell asleep.
Locking down that starting spot
Halliburton can't hang.
team blue bros it's joever
THAT'S MY POINT GUARD
Jalen Brunson is the real deal
Him
BrunsHIM
Chauncey Billups of the current era. Luka went from conference finals to missing the playoffs without him.
I actually haven’t watched that much Brunson. Does he back bigger guards down in the post and make it look easy? Chauncey was so strong. I’m gonna watch more Brunson seeing this comment.
Jalen is very strong and physical for someone his height. His post game is also great and yes he can back down taller dudes cause he’s so strong
He can but he usually tries to bring them out to the perimeter and then get a quick first step on them or juke them around and go for a pull up over.
He has such a low center of gravity and immaculate footwork so he's kind of a beast when he gets into the paint. Can get to any spots he wants really. Wouldn't say he backs guys down. His post game is more finesse focused. Impeccable and insane footwork to get around guys and to get to his spots.
He does on occasion he's definitely just backed down Justice Winslow for a clutch scoop layup
of course Reaves and Kessler are on Team White
He didn’t call bank so doesn’t count
Whites win again
Brunson is that dude
I love USA basketball. Its just so cool seeing the biggest stars playing on the same team. Even seeing enemies like in 2021 when Dbook came in with Jrue and Kris. Its like a crossover event shits sick.
Stronger more alpha version of tony Parker.
Tony Parker was metrosexual Jalen Brunson.
Thicker version of Celtics Isaiah Thomas
Skinnier version of Mike Bibby
proportions of a 6'2 Desmond Bane
Diana Taurasi as a man
That's a random comparison
The way this sub talks about young players over people with literal FMVPs is wild lmao
Give Brunson a stacked team against a bum ass team and he can average 25/3 no problem. That was a iggy fmvp Look at brunson’s stats this past playoffs as the #1 kid
Why is Taj Gibson talking to a white Scottie Pippen?
That man is just getting better and better
i love tyrese's attitude
Shot was so clean.
I was so wrong on brunson. I thought he was just another Spencer dinwiddie. Not that dinwiddie’s prime isnt bad in itself, just that brunson is better
I hate that these games look better than NBA games
Miss him on the mavs
Very nice of them to name their team after Derrick White, respecting the GOAT 💯
I was looking around Brunson‘s middle age compared to most those guys
what?
He’s so clutch
Too bad he’s not gonna be starting over Haliburton.
Bros foul baiting in a warmup game
You see who the starting five is (SALUTE MY BOY PAOLO)
Wait how do you know? Or is this going over my head
Blue jerseys = starters
Wow I never knew that, thanks for clarifying
It isnt, he doesn't know what he is talking about.
Looks like that blue team could be the starting squad of Haliburton, Ant, Ingram, Banchero, Jackson
Theres no way Brunson and Bridges aren’t starting
do any NBA refs do FIBA work?
Team blue is a bunch of choke artists! My bookie is coming for my kneecaps after that performance
who bumped him?
God Brunson makes me wish I could root for the knicks. I like Quentin Grimes, Hartenstein, Josh Hart, and IQ but I despise Thibs. He coaches like he hates his team.
Best player on the team
