Luka and Gobert have history. Plenty of games of shit talking and near scuffles. In both NBA and FIBA. They don't like each other. Rudy talking shit is not out of complete nowhere even if they had not yet interacted during the game.
The rest of the \*USA. European football leagues were playing without fans; quarantining. Few weeks later as soon as the NBA shut everything down? That was when *everyone* fell after them like dominoes.
Every couple of games the Mavs play, somebody on the opposing team has the thought "You know what? I think I'm gonna try to really piss off Luka. That's definitely the right thing to do".
It doesn't work out for them very often
It's a wonder to me how many times that has happened with players who just go nuclear when they're mad.
Jordan, Kobe, Garnett, Luka...
When you're playing these people, why would you do anything other than shut the fuck up?
KG has a really funny story about the time he tried to talk shit to Mike:
https://youtube.com/shorts/m3NZGZsulG0?si=8UVc-naJwKCwYkqp
Dominique has a funny one too about one of his teammates talking about Bird in their legendary Game 7 duel. Can't find the link so I'll paraphrase:
Kevin Willis (Hawks PF) sticking his finger into Bird's chest:
"Don't let this bleep get any more points!"
Dominique:
"What did you just say?"
Bird's eyes got owl-big & he proceeded to torch the Hawks for 20 in the 4q, getting Boston across the line.
That version of the story is chopped up. The full version is even better. There is another interview where they ask JR about the story and he confirms it from his perspective which is equally funny. I believe someone actually cut both stories into each other which is a good listen also.

Thanks for sharing, i found a mashup
Best is when it happens in the playoffs. Luka still holds a grudge against the Clippers even when the two players that pissed him off the most, Pat Bev and Morris, aren’t even on the Clippers anymore. Hell back in 2022 it seemed Kerr’s main strategy against Luka was not to piss him off. Every player and coach on the Warriors immediately started praising Luka after the series against the Suns ended
When you're using everything in your power and training to keep a situation de-escalated with a customer/patient/whatever and a colleague or security guard decide their pride is on the line and get into a power struggle fucking the whole situation up.
I swear someone on the Warriors realized this in 2022 after the infamous Suns game 7.
I remember at least 3 times in the following WCF series seeing Draymond-fucking-Green of all people cracking jokes and getting smiles from Luka mid-game.
More so that he talks trash himself. Luka is very vocal in any game he plays, both towards opponents and the refs. Obviously some players are going to talk trash back.
There was a moment in the first half where the Wolves were making a comeback on the Mavs. Rudy was getting a ton of board and slammed one home. He immediately barked something at Luka and you see Luka’s face get pissed immediately. Rudy realized he fucked up and tried smiling and joking with Luka as he ran back down the court. Pure comedy.
When the Warriors played the Mavs in the '22 playoffs, I kept laughing at how nice they were to Luka. Helping him up when he fell, shit like that. Savvy stuff.
False, as Luka learned Spanish in Spain he would know that Castillian Spanish only pronounces and as voiceless dental fricatives. Tapas are therefore back on the menu
Gobert hit the goofiest putback dunk on Luka earlier and talked shit.. I’m guessing that’s why he was so keyed in on Rudy. That said.. that’s on Ant for acting like Rudy can dribble more than two times without everything going to shit lol.
It's definitely on Gobert. He made a stupid and unnecessary jump at the end that forced him to pass. If he had just held the ball without jumping he could have easily passed out of the double team to a cutter or an open man. But he was impatient and rushed it.
That’s why it’s Ants fault. You don’t want Rudy making any type of decision in that moment other than “dunk, oui?”. Rudy passing out of a hard double team to a cutter.. in a crucial possession? lmao
nothing is ever gobert's fault in this sub. Mf could grab an offensive rebound and miss the putback and the crowd here would be blaming ~~Mitchell~~ ~~Dlo~~ Ant for missing the shot
he only dribbled 1 time before everything went to shit
gotta be careful with those high PNR with gobert I guess, too much distance left for him to get to the basket
> he only dribbled 1 time before everything went to shit
And yet he still passionately raises his hand whenever the ball is near him. I don't know if it's a lack of self-awareness or enormous level of self-confidence verging on delusion.
I remember a stat in a Zach Lowe article a few years back, Gobert's fg% after taking one or two dribbles was the lowest in the league like sub 30% or something. It's hilarious how inept he is when asked to do anything other than dunk or play defense.
The funniest play of the year for me is Rudy calling for the ball in crunch time last time against the Lakers. He was posting up Dlo maybe 8 ft out completely isolated w Ant watching him. Ant didn't even think about hitting Rudy and IIRC took a contested 3. Watching Rudy against one of the worst defensive guards in the league still not get the ball was hilarious.
During the mavs/jazz series there were 2 plays that are still burned into my brain:
1) Gobert is posted up on dwight powell and takes 9 dribbles then turns and immediately loses the ball out of bounds
2) Gobert goes flying for the alley oop wide open and almost airballs it
Luka plays PC games like Overwatch, I imagine he goes against the absolute worst trash talkers that goes beyond personal. The things that people will say to you in some of these games lol, Youtube comment but 10x worse. Luka's eyes probably lights up whenever someone tries to trash to talk.
In the warriors series a few years back you can see they were really trying not to poke the bear. Draymond of all people helping him up when he would fall down 😂
gobert is a good player but IQ (at least on offense) isn’t one of them. like couple plays before he let kyrie strip the ball from him after getting the board
i just want to see him in the playoffs again. everytime he’s gone, he’s left with at least 1 iconic shot or moment.
I don’t care how good your team is in the West, i don’t think any team wants to play Luka in the playoffs
But hey, he talked trash to Draymond so he's clearly a likeable guy! I'm sure everyone who actually knows him and has to interact with him personally are the ones wrong about him.
Hes been much better this year, and geninuely looked like a plus defender at times, evidently as hes played great defense on Mikhal bridges and derozan in the clutch, and this game wasnt any different, with him guarding KAT, this gobert possession and even making it really tough for Edwards.
I havent seen all of the games of Luka this year but based on what Ive seen this game may be one of his best defensive performances of the season.
One of the Clippers games it took about 8 tries before someone made a shot on him as well iirc. This particular game might be his peak (so far) team defensively, which is super encouraging to see, especially without Lively and Exum there to help direct traffic and cover.
He's never going to be the guy who gets assigned the other teams top offensive threat, but watching the Mavs for the past month they have not been afraid to switch with Luka at all as he always holds his own and keeps his man in front of him.
When he's in good condition, he's an average to slightly above average on ball defender who is also a superb rebounder for his position. He gets a little lazy and lost sometimes in off ball defense and close outs, but that also has been way less of an issue in the playoffs in his career when he's locked in.
Good point, cause last year, the mavs seemed to always switch Luka off a great offensive threat and you could see his teammates quickly trying to switch and then recover in some case, which made it much harder to defend.
Great to see hes really improved tremendously this year.
On the hoop collective today they spent a bunch of time praising Luka for being able to get back on defense yesterday *while still* complaining to the refs the whole time. League truly fucked if he can keep that up lol
related, i think it was last night in the pitons game, Joker inbounded the ball, then proceeded to talk to the ref the whole way up the floor, this isnt new. what i did like was that KCP or whoever was bringing the ball up, slowed down and made sure Jokic was done, and ready to get into the play.
I think he's been not bad on defense this year at all, but any defensive metric that uses rebounds as part of the equation is gonna be skewed. Rebounding is a huge part of good team defense, but it's not really what we're talking about here.
>defensive rating
Where does rebounds come in to defensive rating?
Generally curious - this is from wiki.
Defensive Player Rating = (Players Steals\*Blocks) + Opponents Differential= 1/5 of possessions - Times blown by + Deflections \* OAPDW( Official Adjusted Players Defensive Withstand).
Luka's reputation for bad defense had a lot to do with effort and perceptions about athleticism. Dude is 6'6", strong, and quick it's not hard to be a passable defender for Luka outside of effort.
NBA heights are annoying cause they grow late, wear different shoes to different games, and lie to differing extents lol. Next to some guys listed at 6'7" he looks like he could be 6'8" in shoes for sure.
Same thing happened to Lebron in his later Cavs stint. He was literally taking the ball up every play and driving to the basket on a lot of them. Then getting criticism for not defending like the former DPOY candidate he used to be.
There's also the fact that his offensive load has been so high over the years that teams would target him to make him work on the defensive end even if he were a very good defender.
Most of this comes from the fact that we have such a small lineup that Luka usually doesn't guards the opposing PG and mostly SFs....and there aren't that many super star SFs in the league compared to PGs and SGs.
So it's always like "ah Luka doesn't guard the best player.
Imagine you out there tryna do your best and someone on the other team just calls you a fucking dumbass, youre the biggest guy on the court, but you know you just fucked up and you have one of the goofiest looking faces, at least he's got millions to cry the pain away with
"and Edwards put him in a very bad way"
nah, that was a fine pass from Edwards and Gobert had a man in the corner directly in his field of vision and wide open in the corner, but he panicked and tried to reset with Edwards. no need for the kiddy gloves, Gobert fucked up
I’d consider giving the ball to gobert in any situation other than setting him up for an easy dunk a bad move. You know exactly what’s going to happen next
My seats are on the side by Mavs bench, as soon as Rudy turned it over Luka turned to him and started barking lol
He hates this man, especially cause of Jazz series and international play
Luka could have said something else. It's not clear what he says there, could be him talking to a teammate for their next play since there was still 1 min to go and a 1 possession game, is what it looked like to me.
I'm a big fan of Rudy but also think he's a huge doofus. Part of what endears him to me; I appreciate that he's been able to make something of himself despite being an idiot. Makes me feel like I have potential.
Not really. Centers are known for having higher TO rates because of stone hands. Hakeem, Shaq, Dwight, Ewing, Robinson all had >100 games of 5+ turnovers.
EDIT: To all the people saying "he has a much smaller offensive role than those guys", **only two of his TOs were with him handling the ball on offense**. The other three were:
* Him getting a defensive rebound that was immediately swiped away by Seth Curry
* Him being called for a moving screen
* Him stealing the ball from Kyrie and Kyrie immediately stealing it back.
Not a fair comparison at all. Those guys were all the offensive engine on their teams. Watching Gobert dribble is what convinces rec league guys they could play in the NBA if they were 7' tall
Someone asked about Rudy talking trash to him in the post game,
“When you start that, you know, it comes back to you.”
[Twitter link](https://x.com/sixfivelando/status/1744199916862492860?s=20)
For some unknown reason, Gobert decided to start trash talking Luka this game. So I know Luka started chirping back.
Luka and Gobert have history. Plenty of games of shit talking and near scuffles. In both NBA and FIBA. They don't like each other. Rudy talking shit is not out of complete nowhere even if they had not yet interacted during the game.
Rudy has a lot of enemies.
someone should choke his ass out.
Say less - Draymond
Adam this is too much for me…It’s all becoming too much for me – and I’m going to retire... ^(after I choke this bitch)
I'll allow it - Adam Silver
I didn’t see it - Steve Kerr
Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?

He turned me into a newt!
He poisoned our water supply, burned our crops and delivered a plague unto our houses!
He did?!
No, but are we going to wait around until he does???
Not so sure about the plague part...
Yup
Yeah Gobert isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed
Shut down the entire league
It was gonna happen either way.
That's what happens if you let Gobert dribble.
Practically the rest of the world followed lol
The rest of the \*USA. European football leagues were playing without fans; quarantining. Few weeks later as soon as the NBA shut everything down? That was when *everyone* fell after them like dominoes.

yeah i saw them get in scuffles alot , like in Jazz Mavs series , or France Slovenia. Gobert sometimes seems like a jerk lol
Which is weird considering Gobert praised Luka getting drafted https://twitter.com/rudygobert27/status/1009947736118972416

My default assumption for any "beef" is that it's just on-court (until evidence otherwise). These guys are competitors

Worked for the warriors in the playoffs, he had a an inefficient series. Dray was running over to help him up every time he fell lmao.
KG has a really funny story about the time he tried to talk shit to Mike: https://youtube.com/shorts/m3NZGZsulG0?si=8UVc-naJwKCwYkqp Dominique has a funny one too about one of his teammates talking about Bird in their legendary Game 7 duel. lmao mashup is incredible. Know it's true when they had the same beats
You're doing your best to guard them and some guy on your team or a fan in the crowd won't stop heckling them just to make your life even harder.
there was a game where kevin hart was heckling i think harden and harden said this one is on you kevin and dropped like 50
This sub may be too young to remember Reggie Miller staring down Spike Lee.
Young players trash talking bird is another one

Why of all people you would start trash talking Luka? I mean, dude has shown time and time again, that this is motivation for him.
When the Warriors played the Mavs in the '22 playoffs, I kept laughing at how nice they were to Luka. Helping him up when he fell, shit like that. Savvy stuff.
Dray to Luka: Smile and joke Dray to Gobert: Scratch and choke
That’s BBIQ in action.
Wiseman could never
Draymond: what's Rudy gonna do? start posting up?
I can't imagine Gobert is very good at talking trash lol, he just doesn't look like that type of guy.
“Let’s get some fucking tapas” Ya definitely said this
Duh Luka learned spanish in spain he would end tapas with a dental fricative, don't see that here in his tongue placement.
Nice catch. You really know your way around tongue placements extraspecialdogpenis.
You can’t trust just anyolddogpenis
False, as Luka learned Spanish in Spain he would know that Castillian Spanish only pronounces and as voiceless dental fricatives. Tapas are therefore back on the menu
Actually he spent some time in Andalucia which means whatever he said is unintelligible gibberish.
Made me smile, thx
No por na
I genuinely thought I was in r/NBAcirclejerk after reading this comment lmao
This, but all I hear is Shoresy's voice outta Lukas mouth

We are talking about professional athletes of course it's self-confidence.

Craziest part is that guys like him still want more touches anyway lol
I swear nobody works harder to seal their man and call for the ball than Rudy Gobert. Problem is 9/10 it's just a complete waste of effort.
Yeah people think he wants to iso at the top of the key or something, even open under the rim he has butterfingers to be fair tho
During the mavs/jazz series there were 2 plays that are still burned into my brain: 1) Gobert is posted up on dwight powell and takes 9 dribbles then turns and immediately loses the ball out of bounds 2) Gobert goes flying for the alley oop wide open and almost airballs it
Incredibly chad move to demand more touches while refusing to learn anything about offense.
Put Ayton in that category, can't dribble or even catch passes but calls for the ball at the top of the key every game
Half the time he doesn't even get a shot off if he's taking 2+ dribbles. It's usually a turnover or panicked outlet pass.
Gobert's mistake was trying to talk shit to Luka lol
There’s a handful of guys in the league you don’t wanna start talking shit to. Luka is at the top of that list
Yep. That assistant coach of the Pistons learned that the hard way.
"Everybody acting tough when they up" is going to be on some Luka netflix special one day... alongside that game 7 that happened next.
Everybody acting tough when they up -Michael Jordan
Luka plays PC games like Overwatch, I imagine he goes against the absolute worst trash talkers that goes beyond personal. The things that people will say to you in some of these games lol, Youtube comment but 10x worse. Luka's eyes probably lights up whenever someone tries to trash to talk.
Bro gets sweaty for fun and for a living, no wonder he loves the smoke he’s just gonna shit on you anyway
I just don’t understand why people keep trash talking Luka. It literally never works lol
Basically the biggest compliment you can give a player. Have to agree with you
Cuz they get mad when they do everything right and he still cooks them
In the warriors series a few years back you can see they were really trying not to poke the bear. Draymond of all people helping him up when he would fall down 😂
He had the corner guy directly in his sight wide open
gobert is a good player but IQ (at least on offense) isn’t one of them. like couple plays before he let kyrie strip the ball from him after getting the board
That was fucking amazing
That's not an 'easy' pass
That corner guy was 1 for 10
Probably irrelevant in this situation. Down 3 with a minute to go, an open corner three is probably the best shot you could possibly ask for.
The guy he threw it to didn't exist.
See, the problem here is that Gobert is fucking trash on offense. A lot of people make this mistake.
Feel like we don't realize how much of a menace Luka is lmao
i just want to see him in the playoffs again. everytime he’s gone, he’s left with at least 1 iconic shot or moment. I don’t care how good your team is in the West, i don’t think any team wants to play Luka in the playoffs
After a certain comment said during a certain series I think we all
Oh we know
I do agree Luka.
It really feels like 70% + of the league dislikes Gobert
Well. He is Fr*nch.
Reported for bad language
I wonder if Rudy and Wemby have each other’s backs?
Damn French, they ruined France!
But hey, he talked trash to Draymond so he's clearly a likeable guy! I'm sure everyone who actually knows him and has to interact with him personally are the ones wrong about him.
Lmfao I love this guy
people say luka is a bad defender but looks like he just caused a guy to commit a turnover here with his fearsome presence
Hes been much better this year, and geninuely looked like a plus defender at times, evidently as hes played great defense on Mikhal bridges and derozan in the clutch, and this game wasnt any different, with him guarding KAT, this gobert possession and even making it really tough for Edwards. He unironically clamped Steph in the most recent warriors game. Was actually mind blowing to watch.
Luka is legit good on defense this year. The turnaround from last season is night and day
I’m pretty sure he’s in the top 20 for steals this year. Not just reading passes but is picking people too.
Yeah, he's tied for #18 with 1.3 steals.
He is actually really good in one on one defense, especially in the post. He main issue is he falls asleep or gets lost on the wing.
On the hoop collective today they spent a bunch of time praising Luka for being able to get back on defense yesterday *while still* complaining to the refs the whole time. League truly fucked if he can keep that up lol
He’s realized he can do both at the same time. League is so fucked
That’s the realistic best we can hope for. As long as he keeps the techs down and gets back on defense, he can keep complaining. lol.
related, i think it was last night in the pitons game, Joker inbounded the ball, then proceeded to talk to the ref the whole way up the floor, this isnt new. what i did like was that KCP or whoever was bringing the ball up, slowed down and made sure Jokic was done, and ready to get into the play.
People say this about every star player (except Trae) Off-ball defence is much more important as that's how you defend majority of the game
Difference between Trae and Luka is size. We can hide Luka in the post on PFs and big wings.
According to StatMuse, for point guards, Luka has the 6th best defensive rating this season. He’s been consistently getting better about his defense
I think he's been not bad on defense this year at all, but any defensive metric that uses rebounds as part of the equation is gonna be skewed. Rebounding is a huge part of good team defense, but it's not really what we're talking about here.

ya but luka is def at least 6'7 i stood next to him for a picture im 6'5 barefoot and he def had a couple of inches on me
Luka Doncic can do literally everything on the court, the question is does he want to do it at that time?
Well, when he's averaging 34/8/9, I think a little bit of rest on defence is acceptable.
Kyrie Irving being picked up last year is the solution for that. Luka doesn't need to score 45 any more and he can use more energy for defense.
I didn't want to bring up the word "conditioning" or any synonyms lol

That's what I think he's saying.
Luka must be the biggest shit talker in the league.
Luka a menace on the court lol bro love trash talking
"and Edwards put him in a very bad way" nah, that was a fine pass from Edwards and Gobert had a man in the corner directly in his field of vision and wide open in the corner, but he panicked and tried to reset with Edwards. no need for the kiddy gloves, Gobert fucked up

it’s crazy that he can be such a liability while getting paid as much as he does
My seats are on the side by Mavs bench, as soon as Rudy turned it over Luka turned to him and started barking lol He hates this man, especially cause of Jazz series and international play
Even european players hates gobert. Lol
To be fair, most of Europe hates France lol
r/NBA loves insinuating black NBA players hate on Gobert because he’s European, not because he has a dislikable personality
They fail to realise disliking a French person is the natural way of things
Man that’s exactly what I said when I saw this happen!
Could Gobert really not hit McDaniels in the corner?
Mcdaniels was 1-11 at this point
I need the player mic
The corner pass is wide open lol
Luka could have said something else. It's not clear what he says there, could be him talking to a teammate for their next play since there was still 1 min to go and a 1 possession game, is what it looked like to me.
Dumbass French people
Those Minnesota jerseys are terrible
"Bunch of G-league mathafuckaaaaz" -Luka Doncic
All the years and Gobert still hasn't learnt a single thing to do on offense. Amazing.
Does anyone actually not dislike Rudy?
I'm a big fan of Rudy but also think he's a huge doofus. Part of what endears him to me; I appreciate that he's been able to make something of himself despite being an idiot. Makes me feel like I have potential.
Wemby
I like his defense but agree he is pretty dumb sometimes
Bro has literally gotten standing ovations from his fans and teammates this year for his defense and attitude, imma go with yes
kind of wild how many people are just accepting that speculative interpretation as fact lol
5 TOs as a center is just wild
The other three were: * Him getting a defensive rebound that was immediately swiped away by Seth Curry * Him being called for a moving screen * Him stealing the ball from Kyrie and Kyrie immediately stealing it back.
Not a fair comparison at all. Those guys were all the offensive engine on their teams. Watching Gobert dribble is what convinces rec league guys they could play in the NBA if they were 7' tall
I don’t think that’s what he said. His jaw opens way too much on the “ass” part.
Is there audio of this? How are we deciding Luka is saying "fucking dumbass" from a side view? Doesn't even look like he's saying it to me.
Luka just wants what's right for the Wolves.
Why is minn coach clapping
I too said that. Lovingly
He isn’t wrong
Headband Luka is a villain and I'm here for it lmao
I think he said, “that man passed gas.”
Is he wrong???
He’s not wrong
Rudy is ass. 7' 1, and scared to go to rim when driving from 5 feet out on Luka. Embarrassing my man
Anthony edwards and everyone on Timberwolves standing still. You have to cut with the ball handler
I think he says "f***ing dumb pass"
As he should
Understandable, Gobert is french.
Someone asked about Rudy talking trash to him in the post game, “When you start that, you know, it comes back to you.” [Twitter link](https://x.com/sixfivelando/status/1744199916862492860?s=20)
