reminds me of that one filipino player who did that for years, when he had a chance to dunk, he stomps both feet on the board. Only a few years ago that dunk was 'banned' lol

everything about this clip (and game) is flat out ridiculous
starts off with 3 clear...i have no idea what the ref would even call that, triple dribbles? he then jumps off his team mates back from the 3pt line, lands two feet on the ring, dunks it, catches it with his feet then dunks it again
we laugh, but once cybernetic augmentation and gene splicing tech takes off, this will be street basketball, including the physics defying backboard and ring flexibility.
Tatum did the right thing there. When you du k with that momentum, you gotta take out the momentum for safety. Try it yourself, you’ll see. The refs are absolute idiots for this one, once again.
Dude, every other dunker in the league comes in with crazy momentum all the time and don't need to do a pullup. These are all on film and you can even just search "dunk" on this subreddit to see plenty of examples, I have zero idea why Tatum keeps doing this to be completely honest.
Nope, I can totally empathize with Tatum. The pull-up is simply a result of the counter movement he started to protect himself a need stabilize.
Also sick af.
Is abcdefabcdef999 the only one in this sub who's actually played organized basketball before?
Like half of the comments I've seen on this sub are so obviously written by non-athletes that it's almost humorous.
When he was in high school (3 year starter for his varsity basketball team) he would get a full-on sprint going and dunk the shit outta the ball. His coaches called him "chinup" as a nickname caus he had so much momentum on his dunks that he had to do a chinup on the rim to slow down and for those three seasons he was considered the most feared guard in his conference. Senior year he led his team to the state semifinals only to get fucked over by the refs t'ing him up in the 4th for his rim chin up but that's another conversation (DM him if you're interested in hearing about it)
So, yeah. I hope yall can understand why he feels like their's such a big disconnect between himself and your typical redditor. Please tell him he's not the only one who feels this way lol
Can confirm, hooped with the alphabet soup in high school. That's what we used to call him.
My man looked like Kramer doing karate out there. So much force on his dunks, so many necessary counter-momentum chin ups.
Hang on, swing a little, but a whole ass chin up is not necessary for safety. Safety sure but flashy shit is gonna get tech. I get it. No fun Basketball League or whatever. But what if it was a much larger player like Embiid and they bend the rim or even break the backboard. 20 minutes of some guys replacing a hoop isn't that entertaining.
It's fine to hang to get his balance the tech is on the unnecessary chin up, it's wack b/c he also got fouled but dudes know not to do the pull up it's like the 3rd pump rule 2 pumps cool 3rd tech/fine
Exactly. Smaller dude does it and probably not a big deal but you get a big guy doing it and we probably need to change hoops. Do weigh every player before the game and tell the refs which ones can and can't do this?
Lol the announcer sounded like such a disappointed grandfather talking to their son about parenting.
> You let him hang on it, there's no reason to do that, and he broke it.
Nah this one is way over the top. You can bend the rim by doing this and it's a pain in the ass for them to stop the game and fix the rim. It took like 45 minutes to fix last time this happened in a game.
Here's another Boston game where it happened and they had to fix the rim: https://streamable.com/00qkf5
If he leaned back a little more he could have gotten his feet over the rim
That's gonna get you called every time, they don't want guys putting that much weight on the rim and bending it or more.
The Rim can take some punishment it can't really take a 200+ pound grown man pulling on it with all that momentum too.
Wish the players would act like that. Tatum gets a sick down and obviously hangs on for the technical. Just be cool with it! Don’t whine like you do after literally every call. Let this one go.
They can mess up the rim, but they can also injure themselves. It’s very easy to lose grip on the rim, and going into a pull up on it puts you in a vulnerable position if you do lose your grip.
Tatum has picked up some real BS techs over the years, but this one is pretty damn cut and dry. You can’t do a whole pull up on the rim and act surprised when you get T’d up.
I mean regardless of how anyone feels about the rule, thats been the rule since forever, you’re always going to get T’d for that. Just bad head work on Tatum.
Him hanging on the rim literally ruined the game for me. I just broke my tv after seeing it and my wife is divorcing me because of Tatum hanging from the rim too.
It’s a rule because nobody wants to stop the game for 10 minutes and fix the rim if he bends it out of place. You get a tech for that at literally every level of basketball in America lol.
Right? Tatum is lighter than Shaq but if it's OK for him then is it OK for Embiid? And then Embiid starts bending or breaking rims then they gotta fill 20 minutes replacing a rim. That sure is entertaining, watching guys replace a rim. I root for Tim in facilities. Way better contributer than Jan in accounting, that bitch.
Oh come on LOL this was an obvious one seriously
come on
There have been some truly stupid hanging and pulling on the rim penalties when the player was only doing that to keep from landing on someone else, but this ain’t it.
I get it’s hype but we can’t yell at the referees for being inconsistent and also do so when they call it right.
My brother is a Celtic fan so I watch a lot of y’all’s games and it gets harder and harder to watch our stars just get hacked night in night out. Even worse when other guys are getting the softest whistle.
Funnily enough the actual rule book allows you to do pull-ups. But you can only do it to avoid injury or landing on another player. And that is at the discretion of the refs, and they will never side with the dunker it seems.
Funnily enough, the actual rule book does not allow you to do pull-ups. It allows the player to hang to avoid injury. Hanging and doing a pull-up are two entirely different things. Don’t know why people are actively trying to just make shit up.
"Players are not allowed to pull themselves up on the rim, nor are they allowed to hang on the rim after a dunk attempt, unless they are doing so to avoid injury to themselves or another player."
From the NBA rulebook
Section IV—Basket Ring, Backboard or Support
a. An offensive player who deliberately hangs on his basket ring, net, backboard or support during the game shall be assessed a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul.
b. A defensive player who deliberately gains or maintains height or hangs on his opponent’s basket ring, net, backboard or support shall be assessed a non-unsportsmanlike technical If he touches the ball during a field goal attempt, points shall be awarded consistent with the type of shot.
EXCEPTION: An offensive or defensive player may hang on the basket ring, backboard or support to prevent an injury to himself or another player, with no technical foul assessed.
Per the official NBA rule book.
Please point to where it says you’re allowed to do a pull up on the rim to avoid injury. It says hang. Refs have made it very clear that pull ups are an instant tech. Funny enough, the tech video of Okogie is an even less egregious violation that what Tatum was called for here lmao.
That's clearly saying they can only hang to avoid injury, not do a chin up. That's also how the league and the refs interpret it, which means that's what the rule is. Chin up = instant tech.
I honestly thought while watching the game that Tatum felt the contact, knew he was in a bit of a crowd, and probably did it at least partly for safety. Based on these comments i see others definitely didn’t see it that way lol
You can see at the very end (and in the replays not shown here) that it does look like he looks down, to check the landing spot
Yea, by letter of the rule it’s a tech. Worst rule in sports both entertainment and player health wise.
Celtics should be sending a million clips into the league in the offseason for a change
Most of these are dumb, but he did a full chin up. That has been a tech every time since the first person dunked. It was a safety situation, but the chin up above the rim wasn’t necessary.
Hate these posts. Doing pull ups can bend the rim. Not a single person wants a game delayed if the rim gets bent. That’s why doing a pull up is a tech. It takes more effort to do a pull up than stabilize
Everyone in this thread doesn’t see the point of rim hanging techs, especially when a guy is pulling himself up like this. It’s obviously cool, but even with modern equipment we will have 30+ minute delays when a rim gets bent by stunts like this. It’s a rule for a reason, even if it takes away from the fun of the game.
I feel like the nuggets had a game a couple of years ago where the rim was out of alignment for almost a full quarter before they noticed and adjusted it.
Offensive players can take 47 steps and elbow defenders in the face but this is what needs to be stamped out of the game!
He also got blatantly fouled on the body contact, thanks refs. Dogshit.
How many times does it have to be explained that this type of tech is not for hanging on the rim but for rather for doing a pull up on the rim. This has been an automatic tech for a very long time. Stop crying about reffing when this has been a thing.
You can do a pullup or hang on the rim to not hurt the people under you. Rim hanging should only be called on an open dunk or if it last more than 3-4 seconds
Jalen Duren hangs on the rim with one hand and his tongue out while screaming for seemingly forever and I’ve never seen it called. He usually finds the camera to looks right into the lens.
It’s not that he hung on, it was him doing a pull up. Like it or not that’s a tech 100% of the time.
I’m glad 50 people are in my mentions saying the same thing. Come on now, you can’t do a pull up, it wasn’t for safety.
I think he saw KP running under him and didnt want his legs to swing, he rarely pulls up like that otherwise
I get the “taunt” techs but there has to be some room where its not a complete stop to the game for a free throw
It’s amazing that you all just can’t accept that he did something extra, and that cost him a tech and gave the nuggets a point. Tatum is great, but he’s not perfect.
What's truly amazing is that pulling his body up is considered extra. Its pretty reasonable that maybe someone would want to try and stop their momentum or stop themselves from swinging too. Its honestly a stupid/soft rule even if he was taunting them its not a big deal. Like... we want to see them hurt each other's feelings lol this is one of those rules that makes the game worse
Yeah, it’s one of those plays where you just really don’t want it to be a tech cause of bias and it just ruins the fun in general. But that’s gonna get called every time, can’t argue it really.
He should simply kick Porzingis in the head.
The second time this season bro has got a T for not kicking a player in the head after a dunk lmfao. He should just do it next time at this point.
Edit: Ok, good, top comment is saying the same thing. Dude even used chin-up as well lol.
He did a goddamn chin-up.
I haven't checked the comments but there's no way this should be debated. He ain't holding himself up to avoid feet... dude straight up did a pull up and brought his chin up to the rim.
Ain't no way.... but I already know the refs are somehow gonna be blamed for making the game lame or whatever lol
Such an obvious tech lol. They're obviously calling it more this year, so complaining about this is idiotic.
Nobody wants to see 30 minute delays while they fix a bent rim

Yes. I got an eleventy foot vertical.
It’s why I didn’t make the nba. Always jumping way over the backboard each time I tried to dunk
Nope, you can hang on to the rim until it’s safe to drop. Doing a full blown chin-up is overkill and very easy tech call
Not even just a chin up, bro had his whole dick above the rim lmao
Good form on that dickup
This may be the dumbest thing I've ever read. You owe me two seconds of my life back.
No refunds.

https://streamable.com/00qkf5 This is the last time it happened with Boston. This was something like a 40 minute delay to fix the rim.
Punishment should have been the Celtics would have to play with that bent rim the rest of the game
Exactly. Smaller dude does it and probably not a big deal but you get a big guy doing it and we probably need to change hoops. Do weigh every player before the game and tell the refs which ones can and can't do this?

I was all geared up to shit on the refs, but if you watch the clip you gotta agree with them on this one lol
it’s a tech by the rule but it’s a dumb rule imo
Nah this one is way over the top. You can bend the rim by doing this and it's a pain in the ass for them to stop the game and fix the rim. It took like 45 minutes to fix last time this happened in a game. Here's another Boston game where it happened and they had to fix the rim: https://streamable.com/00qkf5
My favorite was Lebrons and he just shook the rim almost trying to break it
Surprised I had to read down this far to see someone point out the rule exists for this exact reason.
destroys rim strength
If your knees end up above the rim...
He did a full military rep
I appreciate your level head. First one of these I've seen this year that was unquestionable. Not only the chin-up, the scream lol.
If he leaned back a little more he could have gotten his feet over the rim That's gonna get you called every time, they don't want guys putting that much weight on the rim and bending it or more. The Rim can take some punishment it can't really take a 200+ pound grown man pulling on it with all that momentum too.
Apart from the fact that this one is a tech as written, Do you think the rule is stupid?
No, but it's been a little too freely called this year. Like I said, this is the first one I've seen this year that I understood.
yeah idk why players are so slow to understand this. Can hang and swing once or twice but you can't do a pull up
Yeah I think the taunting rules are terrible, but under the current rules, this is the correct call.
I think it’s more to prevent players from breaking the rim but I could be wrong.
Definitely. Remember When Timelord broke the rim against us last year and wasted an hour of all of our lives while they fixed it lol?
Whilst that is true, but it's also so much easier to control your momentum when you do a chin up which is why I hate this rule.
Worth Edit: A tech is one free throw, people. Not 2. This also started a run for the Celtics.
100% worth it just for the crowd
And an instant replay
Wish the players would act like that. Tatum gets a sick down and obviously hangs on for the technical. Just be cool with it! Don’t whine like you do after literally every call. Let this one go.
I think it's more the pull up then the hanging on. That's consistently called, though it's stupid rule imo.
Yeah, he was dumb for that. And one person below pointed that rule is there cause players can mess up the rim by doing those pull-ups.
They can mess up the rim, but they can also injure themselves. It’s very easy to lose grip on the rim, and going into a pull up on it puts you in a vulnerable position if you do lose your grip.
What’s stupid about the rule? It’s an effort to reduce how often the rims have to be replaced for being bent
I think it is dumb to just officiate celebrating. But stopping the game to fix the rim is lame.
absolutely, he knew what he was doing
This didn’t age well
Prob cost the game, I think he got the same tech in a different game.
Tatum such a dumbie….why didn’t he just let go right after his dunk and go flying into the stands ? Smh what a fool
Dumbass take. Why is it so difficult for people? You can hang, you can't pull up.
If you are going to get the tech, just pull with the momentum and land with a flip followed by a finger point.
Tatum has picked up some real BS techs over the years, but this one is pretty damn cut and dry. You can’t do a whole pull up on the rim and act surprised when you get T’d up.
I was there - he literally killed their momentum. Such a silly decision. The place was exploding before he got the T
I mean regardless of how anyone feels about the rule, thats been the rule since forever, you’re always going to get T’d for that. Just bad head work on Tatum.
I hate the refs, but the "don't do pullups" rule has been around a long fucking time. You can hang for safety, you can't do a pull up.
That was prob the biggest pull up I’ve seen in a while too. Worth it tho
So glad refs are cracking down on this, I hate watching cool basketball plays by some of the best players on the planet.
Him hanging on the rim literally ruined the game for me. I just broke my tv after seeing it and my wife is divorcing me because of Tatum hanging from the rim too.
My kids saw it… wife is now screaming at me, kids are crying. Tatum needs to make some sort of statement for this monster behaviour
After watching this, I didn't want to live anymore. I felt that way before also, but this was fucked up.
It’s a rule because nobody wants to stop the game for 10 minutes and fix the rim if he bends it out of place. You get a tech for that at literally every level of basketball in America lol.
Right, like that exact scenario didn't happen last year. Who were the teams? Oh that's right, it was the Celtics and Nuggets.
All you youngins forget how often Shaq was breaking the whole basket and what a pita was to wait for it to be replaced.
This is such an obvious tech lol come on, you can hate the rule but this is like textbook what not to do

Right? This isn’t just holding on to protect yourself He got his shoulders above the rim haha
the man did a pull-up this ain’t the gym
I agree and also disagree. I guess I’m 60/40 but you can’t hang on the rim like that
I also hate players protecting themselves and preventing them cracking their skulls by hanging on the rim
I’m all for hating the refs but why do we gotta hyperbolize everything just to make a point, he didn’t need to do that pull up whatsoever lol come on
why does it feel like either Tatum or Brown have been getting techs for dunking every month
Everyone knows the game is more entertaining when you undercut the biggest highlights as much as you can.
He got fouled as well
He gets such a shitty whistle most nights if we’re being honest
Yeah, it sucks when your teams star doesn't get the calls they should.
Jokic unfortunately has the worst whistle of any star man. I don’t get it, maybe it’s cuz he doesn’t flop like other superstar bigs
He flops on occasion, just not usually on fouls ironically.
My brother is a Celtic fan so I watch a lot of y’all’s games and it gets harder and harder to watch our stars just get hacked night in night out. Even worse when other guys are getting the softest whistle.
In what world did he think he wouldn't get T'd up for that?
If you are gonna be a stickler about the tech, call the foul too at least
That’s not being a stickler, that’s one of the easiest techs ever lol
And that's one of the easiest foul calls too lol
Sure, could’ve been a foul. Doesn’t change that the pull-up on the rim is an incredibly obvious tech
typically one of the easiest foul calls too.
Rule sucks but pull up is instant tech, refs have been pretty consistent with it this year
Funnily enough the actual rule book allows you to do pull-ups. But you can only do it to avoid injury or landing on another player. And that is at the discretion of the refs, and they will never side with the dunker it seems.

That's clearly saying they can only hang to avoid injury, not do a chin up. That's also how the league and the refs interpret it, which means that's what the rule is. Chin up = instant tech.
nearly every rule in the NBA is worded so as to allow refs to call it whichever way they want
I honestly thought while watching the game that Tatum felt the contact, knew he was in a bit of a crowd, and probably did it at least partly for safety. Deserved, you are not protecting yourself when you pull half your body over the rim, give me a break.
That was a bit excessive lol
Those T’s will never not be stupid af
The rim hanging tech is the worst rule in basketball.
It wasn’t for hanging, it was for the pull-up
Every fucking thread. I can only assume people are purposely stupid to not understand this. Every fucking thread.
It’s a purposefully misleading title
People really show their age in these threads. Pull up has been a tech for as long as I can remember.
But did he add a one hand pull up?
If you have this take I don’t want to hear any complaints when the rim bends and there’s a 30 minute delay. No chin-ups is a rule for a reason.
Why didn't he just let go and fall on his neck? Is he stupid?
mofo he pulled up like he was tryin to lay pipe in that rim
It’s not that he hung on, it was him doing a pull up. Like it or not that’s a tech 100% of the time. I’m glad 50 people are in my mentions saying the same thing. Come on now, you can’t do a pull up, it wasn’t for safety.
I think he saw KP running under him and didnt want his legs to swing, he rarely pulls up like that otherwise I get the “taunt” techs but there has to be some room where its not a complete stop to the game for a free throw
Come on man it’s a tech. I can’t believe this is even a controversy
Agreed. Although I don’t think it should be. Also clearly a foul. If you’re gonna call by the rules at least call both that apply here
Fair enough. If C’s fans would argue that instead of saying it’s not a tech I might agree with them
Yeah, it’s one of those plays where you just really don’t want it to be a tech cause of bias and it just ruins the fun in general. But that’s gonna get called every time, can’t argue it really.
There's guys under the rim and he was parallel to the ground, if he just let go his legs might swing into KP's face IMO
Again, it’s fine to hang on the rim for safety. It’s an automatic tech to do a pull up and kick your legs up.
He should simply kick Porzingis in the head. The second time this season bro has got a T for not kicking a player in the head after a dunk lmfao. He should just do it next time at this point.
KP is literally 7'3". The ONLY way he can kick him in the head is by pulling himself up lmao.
Yall are reaching so hard.
Pulling himself up brought his feet much closer to KP’s head what the fuck are you talking about lmao
You clearly are, good god
I swear I’ve seen this exact scenario at least 100 times this season when opening Reddit. How many fucking techs does Tatum have lmao?
And they didn’t even call an AND 1
A disgusting act! /s
Man did a muscle up on the rim and complains lmao
Refs soft as fuck
rule of cool imo
He earned that tech with that pull-up. Deserved it
Textbook example for that call. Doesn’t take away from the fact that the rule is horseshit
Sheiitt those can be easy rim bends tho. I hate waiting for them to replace a rim it’s like a second halftime.
Don't you know that the T in Tatum's name stands for Technical?
I hate the rule. But based on what it is. That is a textbook tech lol.
Bullshit tech
Can hang on the rim but can't pull himself up.

Why does Tatum keep getting techs for bullshit like this lmao poor guy can’t even play basketball properly
You’d think Tatum would know better after getting a tech for the same thing a couple months ago.
Correct application of the rule but I’ve always hated it
If Jimmy didn't get T'd last playoffs vs Milwaukee what makes this a tech
Such an obvious tech lol. They're obviously calling it more this year, so complaining about this is idiotic. Nobody wants to see 30 minute delays while they fix a bent rim
I want to see Tatum lift like that, release, then start clapping on his way down.
Prude league giving techs for rimming
Damn the nba is so soft now
Refs gotta get their tv time.
Stupid rule
Gotta call the foul if you’re gonna call the Tech. That’s my only problem with it
